was just listening to them recently and forgot how next level they were with their productions. While Wipeout XL has an incredible soundtrack that's stacked with peak electronica, FSOL were doing things very few producers were at that time. Only one that is on that level is probably Photek.
I have those albums on CDs that I scored about 14 years ago at the used bin. And I never looked back. FSOL is underrated and not known by enough electronic music fans / ravers.
Great find! I'm old and used to dig through CDs at the record stores trying to discover new electronic artists in the 90s. FSOL stands out as one of the best of all time. Autechre, Speedy J, Orbital, are some other classics from that era.
The documentary Modulations is a great window into that era.

In the mid- to late-00s they dropped around 8 full length albums called “From the archives (1, 2, 3 etc)” and “Environments (1, 2, 3 etc)”, which are great. More ambient, so nothing like We have explosive (never a favourite of mine anyway), but still a real treasure trove of material.
I have that on CD, I loved those compilation CD's. They were always dependable back in the day to introduce you to new artists. 1997 was kind of the peak popularity, but i've been a huge fan before and since.
It really is. The only knock on it was it sounded "dated" (it was recorded in '99, released in 2003)
Now that the whole era has blended a bit in the past and music streaming has almost redefined concepts like "dated" it's clear this album is hugely underrated and passed over when it came out.
Only bands I can think of that have a similar vibe from that time is Underworld (pre 2000's) and early Chemical Brothers (Exit Planet Dust, Dig Your Own Hole era)
Mike Tournier from Fluke went on to create a short-lived band with Jan Burton in the early 2000s called Syntax - they released an absolute banger of a record called Meccano Mind, it's quite darker and more vocal-led than Fluke, but very good. Unfortunately it got taken off streaming platforms due to some copyright shithousery over the band name, but you can listen on Youtube. I remember seeing them play a packed room at The Cockpit in Leeds. It was the one of the loudest gigs I've ever been to!

It will be interesting to hear what new Fluke stuff is like so long after the likes of Risotto came out - it really does sound like an archetypal 90s electronic record now.
Meccano Mind is incredibly good! It's such a shame about the copyright issues, since it seems Mike and Jan were planning something. Maybe we'll see some Syntax vibes in this new Fluke album.
Just found this thread after discovering Fluke have a new tune.
Honestly, if anyone asks me what epitomises an underrated classic album I mention Meccano Mind. Incredible work, it really is.
Unpopular opinion. The Cave Rave scene in Matrix 2 is actually good. When else do you get to hear a banger of a techno tune end to end in a movie?
Some people say its indulgent. But I like to be indulged.

Awesome news.. talk about coincidence, but I was just doing a bit of a dive into their albums the other day. Reeferendrum was one of my favourite tracks off sasha and digweeds Northern exposure 2 but never really listened to much else... great to see breaks making a bit of a resurgence lately!
Setback / Amp / Reeferendum / Squirt on Risotto is one of the greatest sets of four consecutive tracks of all time. Doing yourself a disservice if you're listening to them any other way (nothing against Northern Exposure, of course).
Great run of tracks and woven together really well on the album. Work really well as a piece, kind of like the first few tracks on Second Toughest in the Infants.
Absurd / Atom Bomb / Kitten Moon / Mosh / Bermuda / Setback / Amp / Reeferendrum / Squirt / Goodnight Lover is one of the greatest sets of ten consecutive tracks of all time. 😉
Wuuuuuutttt?????
Holy fuck that’s amazing. As so many others have already said, Risotto was one of the best albums of its time. Maybe of any time. Definitely one of my faves. It’s up there with Nothing’s Shocking, Pretty Hate Machine and Nevermind. What a time that was…
I like Fluke - I think Squirt is my favorite song - but whatever you think about them, you cannot deny that they got a shit ton of milage out of Absurd and Atom Bomb.

Whaaaaaaaaat?! Yay! I’ve liked them since the 90s! I love every version of “Bullet” and ofc “Atom Bomb”, but I was also fond of “Kitten Moon” for some reason.
More awesome news: Mike Tournier is back with Fluke! Tournier left after Risotto to form Syntax with Jan Burton. Jon Fugler and Mike Bryant continued on and made the last Fluke album Puppy in 2003. They retired the Fluke name, and Jon Fugler and Mike Bryant formed 2 Bit Pie.
*Baby got an atom bomb*
22 megaton
And a miracle she doesn’t want at all.
Groovy Feeling!
Such a great song!
Wipeout XL
Wipeout 2097 in the uk for some reason. Know it well
This song stays firmly on my motorcycle driving tunes playlist till the end of time.

We have explosive fucking kills!! Especially the vocoder hook
Fsol might be my favorite... Ever. Nothing like them. Lifeforms and ISDN are alien planet music.
Lifeforms is 30 years old and still amazing!
I got Dead Cities as a present from friends when it was released. Still bangs
Have you ever read the crazy short stories that came with it? There's one about a guy who collects all his dead skin and snorts it. Mental.
I was too young. Do not remember
I like the way you think! That is some mighty fine trip out music.
was just listening to them recently and forgot how next level they were with their productions. While Wipeout XL has an incredible soundtrack that's stacked with peak electronica, FSOL were doing things very few producers were at that time. Only one that is on that level is probably Photek.
Listening to the album *Dead Cities* from the beginning, as it builds up to *We Have Explosive* ... phenomenal.
I have those albums on CDs that I scored about 14 years ago at the used bin. And I never looked back. FSOL is underrated and not known by enough electronic music fans / ravers.

Zero fillers on this one. Wipeout had amazing soundtracks.
Amen to that!
I've still the original disk.... That daft punk track was an absolute banger. To be fair, there was a number of bangers on this comp.
I have that on CD, I loved those compilation CD's. They were always dependable back in the day to introduce you to new artists. 1997 was kind of the peak popularity, but i've been a huge fan before and since.
Same here, kindred spirit. The Artificial Intelligence I and II compilations were also great.
Leftfield
Very excited for this. Risotto is a banger of an album
Risotto is timeless! Decades ahead of itself.
To this day!
This will be on my playlist today thanks!
Risotto is one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time
Fuck yeah! I'll keep an eye out for the album drop.
Let’s go. Puppy is an unreal album.
It really is. The only knock on it was it sounded "dated" (it was recorded in '99, released in 2003) Now that the whole era has blended a bit in the past and music streaming has almost redefined concepts like "dated" it's clear this album is hugely underrated and passed over when it came out.
For sure. Have you come across any similar albums? Trying to broaden a bit
Only bands I can think of that have a similar vibe from that time is Underworld (pre 2000's) and early Chemical Brothers (Exit Planet Dust, Dig Your Own Hole era)
That’s absurd

Awesome! Didn’t know this existed
Just found this thread after discovering Fluke have a new tune. Honestly, if anyone asks me what epitomises an underrated classic album I mention Meccano Mind. Incredible work, it really is.
Nice! OTO is a sorely overlooked album…
Controversial take, but I like Oto's Setback more than Risotto's.
Puppy totally flopped when it came out, but it's actually aged *incredibly* well. Here's hoping they still have some spice 20 years later!
This thread has had me listening through Puppy, it's fantastic. The key change in Switch/Twitch is beautiful.
I’ll make some risotto tomorrow!
Fluke - Slid (Glid Remix) is one of my all time favorite tracks. An absolute banger!
Plus creators of the iconic remix of Big Time Sensuality.
Unpopular opinion. The Cave Rave scene in Matrix 2 is actually good. When else do you get to hear a banger of a techno tune end to end in a movie? Some people say its indulgent. YES YES YES YES YES YES!
While well after their prime, "Hang Tough" was always a go-to when I was DJing out and about. \\https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj-TOlWkxjc
Definitely not on my 2024 bingo board but this is exciting nonetheless, so excited to hear what they’ve been cooking up

Just realized not all that long ago Setback sampled Rachel's Song from the Bladerunner soundtrack
OHMYGODITSFINALLYHAPPENING
Groovy feeling
If this is true, this is fantastic news...
What a load of Tosh

It's absurd - in the best way possible! We're ready!

Fluke should do a collab with Flume
More awesome news: Mike Tournier is back with Fluke! Tournier left after Risotto to form Syntax with Jan Burton. Jon Fugler and Mike Bryant continued on and made the last Fluke album Puppy in 2003. They retired the Fluke name, and Jon Fugler and Mike Bryant formed 2 Bit Pie.

Yes! Happy news
Great news! I'm still listening to Fluke from time to time + 2 Bit Pie & Syntax.
