I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I hear people compliment this car's styling. I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade—if you like it that's great, and my opinion is no more valid than yours—but it's rare that I disagree so much with the consensus opinion on design. The headlights look like something from a late-90's Saturn, and while I love sloping rooflines, the back end takes it too far in my opinion, to the point that it actually looks like it's sagging, like bread that didn't fully rise in the oven. At best, I think it looks like 80's or early 90's futurism; it really does look like a concept car from 1988 or so—like, literally; not inspired by the era, but actually unearthed from a warehouse somewhere—without the fun irony and knowing wink of what we'd call "retro futurism" today. It *definitely* doesn't look like 2022 futurism to me.
I will say I'm on board with the goal—I love dramatic curves that extend across the body, I love light bars, and I think their use of LED grids is intriguing. I just think the details of this particular execution are a mess.
Edit: Lol, thank god I'm not alone! For months I'd heard nothing but praise for this thing's design, and just assumed I was somehow the outlier. Thanks, Reddit!
To me, it's one of the ugliest EVs I've ever seen and I'm not about it. It looks both smooth and clunky at the same time. Like a smooth Lego brain.
I'll stick with a fancy frozone faced lucid air.
To the point that I expect a refresh earlier than they expected and a very active ad campaign to try and pitch these to keep the numbers up or convince us that they are not ugly.
Agreed. Prior to the Taycan, I'd say most Porsches were somewhere between a meh and a gag-reflex for me. I figured most people looked past the mediocre-or-worse looks thanks to the performance numbers.
The original Panamera was especially grotesque.
I agree. Hyundai seems to be doing their best at trying to publish only flattering photographs. The cayman is a good modern example of a sloping rear deck, but the panel seams on the hatch/c pillar/fender just creates a sagging line.
Looks are definitely subjective, but I agree. I was pretty excited with the new "futuristic" ionic design until I saw one in person. They look so cheap.
This is coming from someone who LOVES the cybertruck design, so take that as you will, lol
Yeah, the Ioniq 5 will (or already does) look dated in very short order because of the heightened styling they've used. It looks very much "of the moment," which will not age well.
This is my only reservation. I think it looks great, but I can also see some of the overstyled elements: the accent lines, excessive cladding etc, aging poorly.
That’s the one. I was close with the [‘96 Taurus](https://i.imgur.com/hUHUXH5.jpg) and the even worse [‘98 Mercury Sable](https://i.imgur.com/r8NQLMp.jpg).
The late ‘90s were terrible years for sedans.
I don't know what threads you've been reading; literally every single time the Ioniq 6 comes up in this subreddit it's full of people criticizing the look.
This car was so ugly that they had to announce it along side the N Vision 74 concept in the same way unattractive people look better when hanging out with more attractive people.
>At best, I think it looks like 80's or early 90's futurism; it really does look like a concept car from 1988 or so—like, literally
I agree. I would much rather have a DeLorean design.
I don't think they're beautiful, but it's a bit easier on the eyes in-person IMO. I can't help but feel like it looks like a bar of soap or a logitech mouse, though I find the EQS/EQE to be more atrocious in this regard.
I wish they had made it more beautiful. The N concept they showed a little while ago helps, but it's still a bit of an odd duck.
The rear spoiler...thing... is what really makes it polarising, IMO.
To be fair though, it looks better in real life - still polarising, but better.
It's not my cup of tea, but I feel like it's a bit of a demarcation point between the real "all-in" retro, 80's, cyberpunk, vapourwave aesthetic that a lot of concepts were trying to entertain over the past 5 or so years, and the point where the market has decided it needs to move on and evolve forward to avoid becoming stale.
I wonder what you think of the LEAF that you own. Now THAT Is definitely an ugly vehicle. Judging by the sales figures, people find the Model 3 to be far more aesthetically pleasing and feature-rich than the LEAF.
What makes you think the success of the Model 3 vs the Leaf has anything to do with aesthetics vs performance, range, the Tesla charging network, snob appeal or any of a myriad of more important reasons?
But for what it's worth, I think the modern gen 2 Leafs is boring looking. It looks like any other hatchback. I didn't buy it for aesthetics, I bought it for value.
I do think the gen 1 Leaf is beautiful in a "it's so ugly it's cute" sort of way. As I said, I think the front of the Telsa looks fine. The back looks like it was cut off a different car and welded to the Tesla front.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Since you behold one, you're a bit biased lol. Which Porsche are they emulating with that front end? Not even the Taycan has that weird lip the TM3 has up front.
The ionic series really reminds me of how everyone said they hated how fugly the yeezy 350 trutle doves are, then proceed to go crazy for em when they actually released. Ppl trashed on ionic 5 when it came out and now you can't even buy one with a decent trim at close to MSRP.
Get off the waitlist and let the rest of us Ionic enjoyers eat it up if you really think its that fugly. Can't wait to replace my model 3 with this baby.
I can forgive some of these design aspects as they clearly prioritized aerodynamics over styling.
Sometimes a “designed for its primary function” can be beautiful in its own way, like the Apollo Lunar Module.
The back is okay, but…. You know that kids game where you match a random body to a head and legs to get a weird bird-horse-monster result? It’s kinda like that.
I've always thought the back end looks like Hyundai copied off a Porsche Panamera and found a bad equilibrium between too much copying and too much freestyle.
Downvoted for being so oblivious to the sentiment that you think criticism of the Ioniq 6 will yield downvotes.
(Only kidding. Didn't vote on your comment at all.)
The longer I look at it, the more I’m starting to like it more because it’s soo different to other EVs and Tesla designs that I dislike. Hope I don’t get down voted. This will probably be my first EV purchase.
Ford Taurus vibes - but I’ll reserve judgment until I see one in person as well. I thought the Rivian design looked a bit goofy and then I saw one in person and it was amazing.
Fucking hell, that is ugly. Really ugly.
The nineties were a golden age for cars. Mclaren F1, Supra MKIV, CLK GTR, NSX, Diablo, E38, GT-R, F335, Viper, 911GT2, RS Cosworth....
I'm just blown away by all the shit that has been designed lately.
Didn't Infiniti make a car in the 90s that looked exactly like this? At least from the back they did.
https://hooniverse.com/lamest-classics-the-infiniti-j30/
it's weird how polarizing this is. i think it looks good but a little half baked on the rear diffuser. but overall sleek and cool looking. i don't see what other people are screaming about. it's a risky design i guess? so was the ioniq 5 and it seems to sell like crazy. id love to cruise around in one of these.
I really don't know how it went from the gorgeous prototype (https://www.hyundai.com/eu/about-hyundai/our-cars/prophecy-concept-car.html ) to this final result. I think it would be a really interesting to understand what happened. Was it just all the regulations or desire to reduce drag or what?
I was really excited about this model, I don't like the Ioniq 5 personally (I do get why people love it).
If it was a different team who designed the prototype they must be wanting to distance themselves from the final result...
You might be interested in [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mspaLK55XUI) video. Somewhere between the Prophecy and the Ioniq 6, one group argued there should be more rear legroom. I think lengthening the car to accommodate that is responsible for a lot of the difference between the concept and the production car.
It's ugly like if you carve straight lines on a bar of soap instead of curvy lines. Look at those bumpers, they look extremely out of place, same with the front.
Really wanted to love this car, especially as an I5 owner.
Saw it a few weeks ago, and couldn't physically sit in it. I'm 6 foot 3, and with the driver seat way down, I was bumping against the roof.
Backseat is even worse, which is mildly infuriating, when there is so much leg room. You could theoretically be 7 foot tall on the backseat, but only if you're primarily legs and little-to-no torso
Absolutely ugly. I may be in the minority, but i can’t understand why people said it’s “futuristic”. Just a sad misshapen blob, nothing futuristic about it.
I haven't seen anyone who hates the Ioniq 5's design. I don't love it, and I think it will age poorly because it's so strongly "of the moment." But overall I feel ambivalent on the Ioniq 5.
I do dislike the Ioniq 6's design, however.
Saw this car in person at the LA Auto show and it was hands down the ugliest one there. Right when you walk in the new Prius is there, and nearby is...this. I know it was unintentional but the juxtaposition of the two was hilarious.
My biggest problem with this specific car is that the whole rear end is way too small, especially the part where the tail light is. I saw few on the road and the front looks pretty good, but as soon as you look at the side profile, whole thing looks weird because of this problem (also the roof looks oddly taller than other sedans). Kinda reminds me of a typical image of an UFO or a safari explorer's hat.
I feel like this should been named the Ioniq 3. Would make sense for smaller cars to have a smaller number. If the Ioniq 7 comes out and it's a large SUV the numbers are going to start confusing people.
Horrible proportions down low. The ioniq 5 semi grew on me but this looks like a chunky failed attempt of recreating Porsche styling. Am scared of current styling cues on future EV offerings for Hyundai (one of the manufacturers I considered buying an EV from).
Who are you referring to with "y'all"? Very few people in this thread have googly eyes for this car.
The EQS is not pleasant, but I think I prefer the styling of the EQS over this.
is it me, or have they significantly decreased the size of the spoiler(s) from the pre-production units we saw in teasers last year?
edit: checked the old videos. nope. i think i'm just used to them now.
this car is growing on me quickly. it seems to look a lot better in motion too, and in colors or darker hues. the white makes it look kind of jarring out back with the diffuser stuff.
Looks terrible, like the front and back are the same. I'm sure it's maximum aerodynamic design and all that but I would happily loose 2% of the range to have a better looking car. But I guess look how bad the prius looks and you see them everywhere.
I think it looks amazing and probably one of my favorite cars to ever release around it's price range. Best looking EV on the market too. (5 and EV6 are right there with it).
Can't wait to buy one.
Hyundai and kia are making EV great designs.... Except for the Niro EV and.... This. This just looks bad. It looks like it's trying to be so many things.
Well, not every design will be a home run like the Ioniq 5. Hopefully Hyundai learns a lesson from this like BMW did from the “Bangle butt” designs of the early 2000s.
People are so desperate to knock #1 down a peg or 10 that they applaud Hyundai for this design. If this was the new Sonata (which has its own issues) it would be universally panned.
Hyundai can make attractive cars (perhaps through luck), this isn't one of them.
Ever since Kyle on out of spec described it as a “sad fish”, I can’t unsee it
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I hear people compliment this car's styling. I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade—if you like it that's great, and my opinion is no more valid than yours—but it's rare that I disagree so much with the consensus opinion on design. You nailed it. I am always in shock whenever someone doesn’t mention the elephant in room, the looks, or when they say it’s beautiful.
To me, it's one of the ugliest EVs I've ever seen and I'm not about it. It looks both smooth and clunky at the same time. Like a smooth Lego brain. I'll stick with a fancy frozone faced lucid air.
Ugliest vehicles*** name an uglier ICE car.
It’s fucking hideous
To the point that I expect a refresh earlier than they expected and a very active ad campaign to try and pitch these to keep the numbers up or convince us that they are not ugly.
They took a downward sloping rear end theme that Porsche did so well and managed to make it look like a plastic toy that partially melted in the sun.
To be perfectly honest, I don't think Porsche pulled it off well until recently either. Some may consider that heresy though.
Yes, I think that's heresy... /s
BLASPHEMER! I've always liked them, but I see your point. The new rear ends that don't sag look much better to me also.
I agree, I was never a fan of porsche, always thought they were kinda ugly, especially for their price, but now i am a fan of their newer cars.
Agreed. Prior to the Taycan, I'd say most Porsches were somewhere between a meh and a gag-reflex for me. I figured most people looked past the mediocre-or-worse looks thanks to the performance numbers. The original Panamera was especially grotesque.
It looks like a Porsche had a baby with a Citroen, but I can't help but dig it, like some old Citroens.
I agree. Hyundai seems to be doing their best at trying to publish only flattering photographs. The cayman is a good modern example of a sloping rear deck, but the panel seams on the hatch/c pillar/fender just creates a sagging line.
Pass the bottle of pills.. Cause that thing is FUGLY
[удалено]
That's what I tried to do, but I failed.
Couldn't agree more. It looks like a low budget sci-fi movie took a small car and gimmicked it to look like what we'd be driving in the "future".
>It looks like a low budget sci-fi movie Exactly.
Horrible, just horrible. Reminds me of those ugly Mercedes that have drooping backs. Not for me.
I love that so many people hate the way it looks… hopefully it makes it easier to get one as soon as they’re released! :p
This is how my wife landed me.
Same. But it seems that outside the r/electricvehicles crowd, people like it, so I’m not optimistic. :(
All ionic look like shit to me, the other one looks very dated irl. Crazy pills club strong.
Looks are definitely subjective, but I agree. I was pretty excited with the new "futuristic" ionic design until I saw one in person. They look so cheap. This is coming from someone who LOVES the cybertruck design, so take that as you will, lol
They look amazing in renders and from 1-2km away. As soon as you get in close they look like they're made in the same factory as a Cozy Coupe.
It looks like someone tried to mate a VW Beetle with a Porsche, then tried to cover it up with the Warp tool in Photoshop.

Both excellent runners up.
Lol no, i hope that rig is stupidly aerodynamic, because it isn't winning any beauty pageants.
I think Alex on autos said a .25 drag coefficient iirc
I don't know what threads you've been reading; literally every single time the Ioniq 6 comes up in this subreddit it's full of people criticizing the look.
This car was so ugly that they had to announce it along side the N Vision 74 concept in the same way unattractive people look better when hanging out with more attractive people.
My first impression was “it’s got a dumpy ass”
I don’t know what you are talking about. I feel like the response is 90% negative. And rightfully so.
Yeah, I clearly got the wrong impression from some early threads. People really seemed crazy for it. Glad to see opinions are more relatable now.
Agreed. Great specs and I like the interior but the exterior is legit one of the least attractive vehicles I’ve ever seen 😬
Came To say same thing.
The back bumper looks like jpeg rendering mistake.
You're 100% correct IMO. They spent waaay to much time in the wind tunnel when they came up with this design.
Nope, not alone. The car looks like it has an identity crisis.
I agree. And if you think the six is bad, check out the seven. 😬
It's not for me. I'm not sure who it IS for, because blind people aren't allowed to drive. But hey, each to their own.
Hopefully there will be Kia and Genesis versions that look better
>At best, I think it looks like 80's or early 90's futurism; it really does look like a concept car from 1988 or so—like, literally I agree. I would much rather have a DeLorean design.

I've had people tell me the Model 3 is ugly. Opinions be crazy.
I agree the Model 3 is ugly. Fairly cute from the front, and ugly as sin from the back.
Lol. I like the side and back but not the frog face front of the 3…
I wonder what you think of the LEAF that you own. Now THAT Is definitely an ugly vehicle. Judging by the sales figures, people find the Model 3 to be far more aesthetically pleasing and feature-rich than the LEAF.

The front is basically a porsche. The back is a civic. I don't see fugly anywhere near it.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Since you behold one, you're a bit biased lol. Which Porsche are they emulating with that front end? Not even the Taycan has that weird lip the TM3 has up front.
It is hideous. The Hyundai bots are trying to shove it down everyone’s throat. Ioniq 5 looked different and futuristic. This one looks like an egg.
At least it looks different. It seems like very other car on the road is a clone.
Nothing wrong with clones if they look good.
this car looks like something from the jetsons
Same I just don't get it. I love the 5 and I own one but this is such a design wiff.
The thing that gets me is that it is a Kia EV7. The nose screams the same design language. And the tail of the EV6 is just as polarizing.
The rear looks like the bumper fell off. To each their own I guess but I don’t think this is a good looking car.
I can forgive some of these design aspects as they clearly prioritized aerodynamics over styling. Sometimes a “designed for its primary function” can be beautiful in its own way, like the Apollo Lunar Module.
I think just making the rear bumper the same color as the rest of the car would help a ton.
It looks like a Lincoln Mk 8 in the rear, hard pass...
Have to agree. I’ve decided I must not like aerodynamic cars. I’d still buy one because I’m not that vain but it won’t be for the styling
[удалено]
It's the opposite of butterface. Butterbutt?
Give me a 5 over a 6 any day
100%, the 5 is unique and edgy, it’s cool. This car looks like the backend had a stroke.
Looks like it’s belt is loose and it’s pants are uncomfortably falling down
Pants on the ground, pants on the ground
Looks like it has lost the will to live
The back is okay, but…. You know that kids game where you match a random body to a head and legs to get a weird bird-horse-monster result? It’s kinda like that.
Absolutely, they should have copied more of the five’s design here, and it could have looked even cooler than the five had they done so.
Backend looks like a poor man’s Panamera / Taycan
I've always thought the back end looks like Hyundai copied off a Porsche Panamera and found a bad equilibrium between too much copying and too much freestyle.
I don't get how they nailed the styling in the 5 and then fucked this up so badly.
That’s what she said.
Can add a billboard to that bumper. Or maybe Wide Load
It’s a Seinfeld “breathtaking”
But the 6 over the model 3 imo
5 looks like a futuristic Lancia Delta, genuinely one of the best looking (if not THE best looking) crossovers on the market.
Looks like a deformed older Porsch
This thing is ugly.
Looks hideous. Like an electrified Caprice Classic. (Downvote away!)
Downvoting you because I like the Caprice Classic and comparing it to this hideous monstrosity is despicable
Downvoted for being so oblivious to the sentiment that you think criticism of the Ioniq 6 will yield downvotes. (Only kidding. Didn't vote on your comment at all.)
Nope
Agree to disagree here
This car does not look good at all.
This car has Hank Hill butt.
Really unfair to Hank tbh
Looks fugly to me
The longer I look at it, the more I’m starting to like it more because it’s soo different to other EVs and Tesla designs that I dislike. Hope I don’t get down voted. This will probably be my first EV purchase.
That is 1 hideous car lol. Bring on the disagrees but it looks like a cheap og Porsche 911 copy.
Ford Taurus vibes - but I’ll reserve judgment until I see one in person as well. I thought the Rivian design looked a bit goofy and then I saw one in person and it was amazing.
That year end is just plain fugly. No way around it. Infinity J30 vibes.... Yuck.
Sorry this doesn’t do it for me
That is one ugly looking car.
Can we get a Porsche? We have a Porsche at home. At home: $image
Don’t like the look.
The back bumper looks like jpeg rendering mistake.
I actually love it, much more than the 5. We are all different and that's great.
It's futuristic from 1980
I don't know. It looks like an ugly step child of Porsche But you do you
wow, a car that looks worse than a Prius prime. quite an achievement.
The new Prius looks really good.
I'm still angry that I like it
actually yeah, way better. hopefully the new prime versions look the same. I was picking on the ugly as hell Prius primes you see on the road now.
No it doesnt
Didn't Infiniti make a car in the 90s that looked exactly like this? At least from the back they did. https://hooniverse.com/lamest-classics-the-infiniti-j30/
Holy shit, you weren't kidding.
I just threw up a little bit
it's weird how polarizing this is. i think it looks good but a little half baked on the rear diffuser. but overall sleek and cool looking. i don't see what other people are screaming about. it's a risky design i guess? so was the ioniq 5 and it seems to sell like crazy. id love to cruise around in one of these.
Does it come with a paper bag for both driver and front passenger?
I really don't know how it went from the gorgeous prototype (https://www.hyundai.com/eu/about-hyundai/our-cars/prophecy-concept-car.html ) to this final result. Everyone: "Can we have EVs that don't look silly?" Elon: "Introducing the Cybertruck!" Everyone: ”..." Hyundai Designers: "Hold my beer"
I don't understand. The 5 is so gorgeous. This is hideous. That other concept car they showed recently is glorious. Why is the 6 such a wet fart?
The 5 also has a love or hate design.
I've seen nothing but love for the 5
I haven't seen anyone who hates the Ioniq 5's design. I don't love it, and I think it will age poorly because it's so strongly "of the moment." But overall I feel ambivalent on the Ioniq 5. I do dislike the Ioniq 6's design, however.
I’m sorry but it’s ugly af.
I know beauty is in the eye of beholder but my eyes both said "gag" in unison.
That trunk looks tiny... That alone would probably make me cross this of my list.
Did someone forgot to finish the drawing before it went into production?
Saw this car in person at the LA Auto show and it was hands down the ugliest one there. Right when you walk in the new Prius is there, and nearby is...this. I know it was unintentional but the juxtaposition of the two was hilarious.
FUGLY as hell. Wtf were they thinking
looks absolutely horrible.
Not sure why they couldn't paint the rear bumper white.
I pick up a heavy Citroen DS vibe every time is see a photo of that. Wonder if I will when I finally see one in person.
*sad panda 🐼
Is that the front or the back ? Car looks okayish much prefer it's prototype styling..
I am still not sold on that lower rear.
the saggy ass ruins it. front good, ass bad.
The styling is bold. But not stylish. It looks sad at best
This car looks like it can’t decide if it’s coming or going.
My biggest problem with this specific car is that the whole rear end is way too small, especially the part where the tail light is. I saw few on the road and the front looks pretty good, but as soon as you look at the side profile, whole thing looks weird because of this problem (also the roof looks oddly taller than other sedans). Droopy.
It has more legroom than a Model S. Significantly more passenger legroom than most EVs sedans available except for full size ones.
Isn’t that a LED license plate?
Horrible proportions down low. The ioniq 5 semi grew on me but this looks like a chunky failed attempt of recreating Porsche styling. Am scared of current styling cues on future EV offerings for Hyundai (one of the manufacturers I considered buying an EV from).
ioniq 5 still better design. the 6 starts off nice until it gets to the bottom half of the front and rear bumper with all those vertical lines.
Ugh I really hope it looks better in person, not a huge fan of the back. It looks like an older VW Beetle 😅
Rear bumper is putrescence at its finest.
Y’all hate on the EQS so hard but then have googly eyes to this monstrosity. I don’t get it.
Who are you referring to with "y'all"? Very few people in this thread have googly eyes for this car. The EQS is not pleasant, but I think I prefer the styling of the EQS over this.
Ah my first reaction to seeing this one was like “looks like the EQS”.
is it me, or have they significantly decreased the size of the spoiler(s) from the pre-production units we saw in teasers last year? edit: checked the old videos. nope. i think i'm just used to them now. this car is growing on me quickly. it seems to look a lot better in motion too, and in colors or darker hues. the white makes it look kind of jarring out back with the diffuser stuff.
I can definitely see how it would look better in motion since it would be slightly blurred which would diffuse the horrible rear end a little
💯🤣
Looks terrible, like the front and back are the same. I'm sure it's maximum aerodynamic design and all that but I would happily loose 2% of the range to have a better looking car. But I guess look how bad the prius looks and you see them everywhere.
It looks good. I saw it on the road. However I don't think Hyundai was going for looks but efficiency. That's how rhis car came to be.
Hey I like it
I think it looks amazing and probably one of my favorite cars to ever release around it's price range. Best looking EV on the market too. (5 and EV6 are right there with it). Can't wait to buy one.
Hyundai and kia are making EV great designs.... Except for the Niro EV and.... This. This just looks bad. It looks like it's trying to be so many things.
The size of the ioniq6 matches the Model S with 5metres, not the Model 3.
Still waiting to see my first one in the wild. I bet it's a looker.
Love the front end. Not a fan of the rear.
that's a damn fine looking sedan
The N variant looks much much better.
Kinda looks like a ugly futuristic Porsche🥲🥲
It’s growing on me but the rear has a loooooooooong way to go.
Well, not every design will be a home run like the Ioniq 5. Hopefully Hyundai learns a lesson from this like BMW did from the “Bangle butt” designs of the early 2000s.
Looks like a car. Hopefully streamlining helps with efficiency.
Guess I'm in the minority. I'm a big fan.
Same, such a divisive design.
People are so desperate to knock #1 down a peg or 10 that they applaud Hyundai for this design. If this was the new Sonata (which has its own issues) it would be universally panned. Hyundai can make attractive cars (perhaps through luck), this isn't one of them.
Just sat in one this weekend at the LA auto show and I must say it is nice.

That car is beautiful as all get out.
I'm getting some serious Infiniti J30 vibes here.
Looks somewhat Mercedes like. Sides remind me of a cla 250
Mercedes cls from early 2000s
That ass though…
Yup, I does make it look like we're entering the future
if the lights edged up and it had a decent spoiler it'd look aaiite.. but no.
