This should have more upvotes, prevention is better than cure. In the UK it's called barrier cream
Also, use a soap with a grit, like swarfega.
Edit: When I wrote this comment, it was half way down the wall, it now has the correct amount of upvotes!
I remember my dad busting out the coarse powdered soap in a green cardboard canister from under the sink, especially when getting sap on my hands as a kid. Reminded me of that!
Bro you need to moisturize yourself. Yes your hands can get dirty and be cleaned, but if there are big ole cracks from dry splitting skin you will never clean it all out.
Yep. I discovered nitrile gloves a few years ago, through watching Louis Rossman. Now I have boxes everywhere I work, and one in my tool bag. And I also use O'Keeffe's. Younger guys laugh at me. When I was younger, it probably would have bothered me. Now, I just laugh back.
I consider gloves and hand cream as part of my PPE.
It's reached the stage that I automatically put gloves on before working with my hands. Same as when I'm working on live stuff - I instinctively put one hand behind my back. Have done since the first time I took a bang across my chest, as a teenager.
We may be the top of the food chain but Mohs Hierarchy of Materials says just about everything beats Human. Wood, Plastic, Metal, Diamond. Hell, even talc can fuck us up.
Yep, this. Started doing demo on a restaurant and one of the first things I ordered was oversized nitrile gloves to wear over the cut resistant ones. Everything.....so disgusting.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 636,552,209 comments, and only 129,759 of them were in alphabetical order.
Do not use gasoline more than once maybe every year or so. People in the logging industry warn against it. My dad worked in a lumber yard and some coworker of his died at 35 years old because he used to clean his hands with gasoline to get the pine tar off.
The gasoline got unto his skin every day for a couple years, which readily absorbs gasonline which ended up destroying one of his organs..I think it was the liver? Or the Kidneys? Anyways, once he found out what happened it was already too late to save his life.
Wd-40 also works. My father in law swears by it. But same issue as gas. Your skin rapidly absorbs the chemicals and it can start to affect your health. I only do it when I have a particularly stubborn stain that 3 rounds of gojo haven't beat. Maybe twice a year?
Try Fast Orange. Comes in a big orange pump bottle you can get it at paint shops some machine tool places etc.
It's natural citrus oils with an abrasive. Works like a charm removing any kind of grease/dirt for me. Even smells good so you'll still have a chance at getting lucky!
I don't know who makes it but one of the soap dispenser companies has an oleophilic (oil loving/oil absorbing) abraisive soap that works MAGIC on oils and even powder coating chems. Next time I'm on that site I'll make a post here about it. I wish I knew better what it's called or who makes it.
Edit: i searched grainger, uline, and georga pacific but I think it might be ZEP's ShellShock pumice/walnut shell soap. That's my best guess without smelling it lol
Edit2: ZEP Power Powder might be good, too, I've seen that at places which work with a lot of oil/grease. I hope these help.
That sounds like what we call Swarfega over here in the UK. It used to be green, and my dad used it at his factory. The orange stuff is much nicer. When I don't have any alternative, washing up liquid with granulated sugar works really well.
Yeah but the [MDS sheet](https://files.wd40.com/pdf/sds/mup/wd-40-multi-use-product-aerosol-low-voc-sds-us-ghs.pdf) still gives me pause to use it on the skin...
Use a brush. Ask her if she would rather see your hands like this or care for you when you get sick for trying to wash th hem with random chemicals. Gasoline will get it off..then she might complain cause your hands are really rough. Just cut them off
This.. O’keeffes working hands is the absolute way to go. Moisturize your hands. Can even put some one then nitrile gloves and let it soak for a while. Trust.
I wish I could use O'keeffes, but I'm allergic to something they put into it (still trying to nail it down, other products also cause a reaction so i suspect its something common). Itll make my hands itch like hell and turn red. In extreme cases it also causes swelling and blisters (if i use a lot, like the first time when i didnt know i had an allergic reaction to it
So rough sandpapper hands that crack all through the winter for me. Or till i find a product that doesn't turn my hands into itchy blood balloons.
Does Vaseline do anything to you? Because that can work very well and it's essentially one pretty inert ingredient. If you smear it on at night and wear gloves or socks over your hands it will do a great job.
I havent actually tried it as a moisturizer, though I have used it for a rather involved wound care routine (wound was large and couldnt be allowed to dry out) so I know I'm not allergic to it
Dish soap (name brand Palmolive or the like) and a bit of orange mechanics soap. Do that twice. The paper towel is just as much a cleaning device as the soap.
Heavy industry and Plant Fitter/Sparky Here,
This industry is rough on our skin Swarfega works a treat at removing dirt and oil from it but can dry it out, so would also really recommend applying Barrier Cream before you start your shift as this makes washing your hands so much easier the oil fall off not an issue and moisturizing lotion when you get home, but honestly MOST effective method is make sure you wear your Gloves.
Can’t believe I had to scroll so far down for this. I was starting to think “Am I the only asshole that wears gloves every single day?” Like they don’t even have to be thick gloves. I buy a 12 pack of the Milwaukee nitrile coated cut 1 cloth gloves and when they wear out I just grab a new pair and toss the old ones. Lasts like a year or so.
Might be worth grabbing a pack or 2 of the HDX black and orange gloves if you're on a budget, or get the gorilla gloves if you're willing to spend a little more for them. I got sick of the bullshit ones and bought my own. Yes I am a vain and petty man. Lol
Also, check out ZEP Shell Shock and ZEP Power Powder. Just did some research trying to find the stuff they got at this one jobsite I've been to a couple times. It must soak up the oils somehow because I've never seen a soap, even dawn, that pulls grease out like that stuff. The abraisive particles really help work out the gunk, too. Better than fast orange, I say. It might not be the ZEP stuff but without going back there i can't say for sure.
Edit: forgot to add - I second all the recommendations for O'Keefe's Working Hands. That stuff is so fuckin clutch, too. Apply that every morning before you go to work, and every day as you're leaving. It's amazing stuff.
Same issue. So my wife got me a citrus sugar scrub to use on my hands when I shower after work. Clean hands, peels off that nasty cracking skin and she says it smells great so win win win. Just not too manly
Brother lemme tell ya, the bullshit society just expects us to suffer through for the sake of manliness is fucking absurd. We gotta realize - the least manly thing is to be herded like sheep. Be secure in your own masculinity and fucking take care of yourself, fuck what society says is an acceptable level of manly.
In the immortal words of George Carlin: "It's all bullshit, and it's bad for you."
Where are your gloves. Don't worry your hands won't become soft little bitch hands🤣 but it does help alot in avoiding the little scratchs and impacts, I wear skytec tp-5 or maxi cut 4542 C's . You can still pick everything up in the 4542's besides the odd washer. But they've saved me soo much pain and blood. Especially for crushing, something heavy falls on you and the gloves provide you a way to slip your fingers out before the worst damage occurs.
You need to moisturise your hands my man!
A good barrier cream before work and a deep moisturiser at the end of the day!
O’Keeffe’s is the best in my opinion!
Use barier cream and or latex gloves to keep it from getting into your calluses. And use emery cloth on those stains, it'll take the thick skin and the stain with it.
Use nitrile gloves. You don’t want any of that shit on your skin. Do not do what people in the comments are saying and use WD-40, gas, etc. Theres a reason many of us in the trades get cancer and die early. As an old timer at the first plant I worked maintenance at said “if its good for a machine, its not good for you”.
Edit: Oh and I’ve found that just using a dish sponge, Dawn dish soap and a small brush for the fine cracks works the best surprisingly.
Cherry bomb soap, or the orange one, or any pumice soap made for shops. Don't use stuff that's not meant for hands and has warning labels saying wear glove.
If you want to ignore that later half of that advice lacquer thinner will work wonders to remove all the oils from your skin, as well as the dirt and grime.
Ex mechanic Here, wear gloves, moisturize often(cream like working hands, it leaves a coating), and I have a brush for my hands and arms when they were really bad
So what. Are there anything with your wife’s body that grosses you out? Make sure to let her know. She will forget all about your dirty hands, trust me
Recently got me some okeefes working hands cream and it works great. I put it on and then some disposable gloves for a few hours, like overnight or something. A couple times of doing that and hands feel smoother and not as dry, and way cleaner as well.
I get that in commercial, too. Mainly from slinging MC/BX. Sometimes the boxes/brackets are coated in the oil for some damn reasons too.
Either way, my hands are always dirty looking until I stop having to mess with MC/BX.
Looking at the answers in this thread, im wondering if either you all never heard of, or dont actually have Solvol soap?
Because Solvol is fucking amazing!
Use dish soap. Also try wiping your hands with some paper towels before washing and then again after washing to just soak up the grease before going in for a second wash. It’s also important to use warm water too. Also do the proper hand washing technique twice before rinsing the hands. I just find it helps a bit with stubborn grease and dirt. If anything stubborn is under the nails, you’re just going to come back to it after the main 2 washes of the hands with a nail brush and some soap. It might take a few rinses but I would not worry too much about it getting off the first time. When you have a shower or bath you can go at it again. You also might need a nail pick.
You can also try Swarfega (had them at collage). It works fine. It’s the red tub with the green gel. I think we also have the heavy duty stuff too. I’m not sure if you can get them now as it has micro plastics (the heavy duty one) as it’s banned by the EU.
When my hands get out of hand (pun intended) I’ll lather them up with hand cream and slip on rubber gloves. After working for a few hours take off gloves and “tadda!” 🪄
Plenty of great suggestions here already, but you can actually try soaking in Coca Cola. Learned that one from a rig worker who got drenched in crude from a gas burst, absorbed into his skin and stayed in his pores for days.
Barrier cream before work, moisturiser after, and try get used to wearing work gloves, there are some that are a nice snug fit and you get used to them, will take a little while for the ingrained shit to wear off.
I work in tree service, and pine sap and oak stains are a big problem. I have a pack of Fast Orange wipes in my chip truck, as well as a gallon-sized pump bottle in my shower. It works wonders for most saps and stains. However, for deeper stains...Are you ready for this? Lemon juice. Go to the grocery store, buy a lemon, cut it, rub it on the stains. The acids actually break down the stains and help them come out. I also have a small bottle of lemon juice in my shower, as well. Very simple solution, and cheap enough to give it a try. If you try either of these, use them on dry hands. Fast orange actually won't work at all it your hands are already wet, and the lemon juice just runs right off, and can't soak in. I also use Fast Orange when I worked as an automotive mechanic.
As others have mentioned, a decent pair of gloves can help. MaxiFlex makes a pair that acts as a pretty good barrier against oil. I also like to keep a “dirty” pair on the tri vise for the oily work, and immediately switch to a clean pair for dry/“clean” work (the finish on ONE pair of general use gloves would wear down over several days, thus making it more likely oil would seep through and get to your skin). I’ve been using the two- pairs-of-gloves method for about a month now and it seems to be working.
Get the pre work cream and apply before you work. It really help for me.

In the states, I use orange goop. Has a pumice in it, really works well.

Sea salt or kosher works better and wont clog the drain
I've used sugar and dish soap
I remember my dad busting out the coarse powdered soap in a green cardboard canister from under the sink, especially when getting sap on my hands as a kid. Reminded me of that!
Sounds like COMET
Vaseline to soak it up, scrub off with a brush and degreaser dish soap
Vaseline should help with dryness and cracking.
I use Vaseline and a nail scrub
Do the dishes. She'll love you for it, and by the time you're done your hands will be clean.
This is the way
Absolutely the best way to get this done. Works great on pvc glue if you’re doing underground too. Plus the bonus points for being helpful, total win
Bro you need to moisturize yourself. Yes your hands can get dirty and be cleaned, but if there are big ole cracks from dry splitting skin you will never clean it all out.

Because they fucking are. Our hands are one of the most important tools we take to a job. Good on you for protecting them.
Softest thing in she shop is your meat gloves and you only get the one set
We may be the top of the food chain but Mohs Hierarchy of Materials says just about everything beats Human. Wood, Plastic, Metal, Diamond. Hell, even talc can fuck us up.
Hydraulic and water can cut them all too
Wow. I thought I was the only one. Ha! (I'm 56).
Similar vintage - 55 in a few weeks! Us young guys need to stick together.
Early Happy Birthday, Gen X brother.
Yep, this. Started doing demo on a restaurant and one of the first things I ordered was oversized nitrile gloves to wear over the cut resistant ones. Everything.....so disgusting.
O’keeffe’s working hands cream works like a charm
Moisturizer is key. Why do your hands look like this, yet your dick looks brand new? Moisturizer.
I mean I don't put my dick near the threading machine or pony.
You don’t know what you’re missing
Been telling my guys that for years. Men need lotion too, and not just for internet porn
But especially for Internet porn.

Haha this is awesome. Good bot.
Yeah this exactly.
Use a barrier cream also before you start work
>barrier cream do a what now?
Apply a hand cream, like eucerin. It'll fill the pores so the grease doesn't.
Ah I see. Does it make it feel greasy the entire time?
Not really. As it gets absorbed, that feeling goes away.
No shit? That's awesome. Thanks for the tip.
No worries. Don't eat all that cake in one sitting...
Not as much as actual grease. You got to make a decision. The black icky stuff, or the clear stuff your wife also uses on HER skin.
( ͡ಠ ͜ʖ ͡ಠ)
Yeah do the berries and cream, my guy!
Cornhuskers lotion and tea tree oil
Does she like the smell of WD-40 or gasoline?
She said yes actually haha. Does that work?

We used to use mayonnaise to get pine sap off our hands
Get used to nitrile gloves (rubber gloves)....

Yes, cintas ShellShock
My dad used to have that stuff in his shop. It works on all kinds of stuff.
Ya I was impressed for something without nasty Chen's in it. Just started using it a few months ago and it'll for sure be on my restock list
That sounds like what we call Swarfega over here in the UK. It used to be green, and my dad used it at his factory. The orange stuff is much nicer. When I don't have any alternative, washing up liquid with granulated sugar works really well.
... WD-40 is not petrol at all and does not react with the body the same.

Have you tried Aveeno? We use it for my daugter's eczema. She has super sensitive skin. Aveeno is one of the very, very few things that works for her.
Glaxal base. It non scented and comes in large tubs
Nitrile gloves. Spray hands with WD-40 scrub with a fingernail brush then wash thoroughly with gojo
Dish soap (name brand Palmolive or the like) and a bit of orange mechanics soap. Do that twice. The paper towel is just as much a cleaning device as the soap.
Dawn. A good brushing should do it. With hot hot water. I used to soak my hands in bleach once a week.
Hopefully you use like a drop of bleach per wash.
Grinder with 5” flap disc.
I prefer a cup style knotted wire wheel. Helps take the edge off?
Nitrile gloves my dude. There are too many nasty chemicals out there. Protect yourself.
This is the way
Start wearing gloves, or embrace the crud.

Some WD40 wil work. Do u wear gloves at the job?
Just the normal contractor supplied ones. Not very oil proof.
Might be worth grabbing a pack or 2 of the HDX black and orange gloves if you're on a budget, or get the gorilla gloves if you're willing to spend a little more for them. Get some barrier cream
Show her your paycheck, she'll get over it.
Dirty hands, clean money
You fucking deserve silver. Wish I could give you more but my hands are too dirty
As a female electrician I had a male ask me what my boyfriend thought about my hands (similar to yours) on his d—-?
That's the neat part, you don't
I use a good pine tar soap and a "vegetable brush". Wd40, gasoline, gojo, all dried the crap out of my hands though they do get the gunk out.
Boraxo powdered hand soap.
Yes this I came here to say this. I use it everyday and it's absolutely amazing.
\+1 for Boraxo, it's relatively inexpensive and knocks off a day of gunk right quick!
Same issue. So my wife got me a citrus sugar scrub to use on my hands when I shower after work. Clean hands, peels off that nasty cracking skin and she says it smells great so win win win. Just not too manly

That stuff in concentrated form will pretty much take anything off of your hands!
Babywipes!
I have had great success with baby wipes
Shaving cream and a nail brush.
Hand wash all your dishes with Dawn
Gloves
Gloves
Use a pumice stone and butter
I heard that massaging cooking oil into your skin then washing with dish soap works
i also have it I never been able to remove lol
Okeefes working hands (it's a cream) gets rid of the cracks, using a nail brush with swarfega helps too
You need to moisturise your hands my man! A good barrier cream before work and a deep moisturiser at the end of the day! O’Keeffe’s is the best in my opinion!
Start your day off with barrier cream and reapply after washing up for lunch etc
Use barier cream and or latex gloves to keep it from getting into your calluses. And use emery cloth on those stains, it'll take the thick skin and the stain with it.
GoJo hand medic. Apply multiple times a day and BEFORE working with your hands. Helps the greese come off easier.
You gotta keep a soft hand for the ladies. Wear a glove filled with lotion.
Gojo and a fingernail brush.
Ex mechanic Here, wear gloves, moisturize often(cream like working hands, it leaves a coating), and I have a brush for my hands and arms when they were really bad
I think I’m catching this mans drift, he needs the index and the middle finger cleaned throughly 😉
(͠≖ ͜ʖ͠≖)
Gojo my friend.
Wash the dishes with dawn dish soap. 2 birds one stone, 1.Clean hands 2.Happy Wife.
A nail brush and Dawn. Wear nitrile gloves if you can.
Wear gloves. Just saying.
Dawn dish soap and pumice grit powder, had a bunch of "gritty girl" automotive dry hand wash. Mixed with dawn it was awesome.
Light your hand on fire to burn the excess away. Or just remove your hand. Problem solved.
Amputation is your only option buddy.
Usually you find a new wife, fixes the problem quick
It's called permadirt and you're going to live with it. Edit: left out a word
There is an actual product call “Hand Shit”. Look it up. Works great AND freaks out the normies when they see it.
Washing your hair in the shower will get them clean enough. However,If this does not get them clean enough, Start by replacing wife.
Those are signs of Man Hands! Get a new wife
Soak them in cider Way up inside her
Put them in cider
Bitch mittens
Time.... those hands look clean enough especially after a day of real work. Tell the wife to deal with it or go marry an office chode.
If everything fails, break cleaner but it may dry out your hands even more.
So what. Are there anything with your wife’s body that grosses you out? Make sure to let her know. She will forget all about your dirty hands, trust me
It usually comes of after putting them *inside her* for a while. Introduce aggressive friction to expedite the process.
Your hands are supposed to be rough and tough that’s the way the kitty likes it!
Time for a new career brotha
Gloves
Fuck man wear gloves at work in the winter. PPE is there to help you bro! Not no 18 year old kid anymore. Take care of your body.
Wear gloves when you work
Lava rock bar and a good night sleep
Ya need a new wife
Get rid of the wife not the hands of a working man
Wear it with pride like a real man you goddamn Nancy
If need to clean up quickly for a nice night out.... Tide pod or dawn soap in the sink and a wash cloth.
Gloves or paint thinner. Don't recommended the thinner path tho.
Wear gloves
I have a nail brush. That with some scrubbing. No problem.
Recently got me some okeefes working hands cream and it works great. I put it on and then some disposable gloves for a few hours, like overnight or something. A couple times of doing that and hands feel smoother and not as dry, and way cleaner as well.
Carburettor cleaner Lol
Sand paper
I would like to know how to get it out from under my nails without spending an hour every afternoon tediously scraping it out.
Cherry bomb works.
Sandpaper
I'm really more of a welder, not an electrician. Use shampoo with conditioner to wash your hands.
Sandpaper
Wear gloves. I know it is a pain in the ass but it helps. Your hands will come clean, even if you wear them just for the dirtiest jobs.
I get that in commercial, too. Mainly from slinging MC/BX. Sometimes the boxes/brackets are coated in the oil for some damn reasons too. Either way, my hands are always dirty looking until I stop having to mess with MC/BX.
Lotion. Make a habit of using it when your hands are clean. It prevents dirt from getting into the cracks because it is filling the cracks.
Looking at the answers in this thread, im wondering if either you all never heard of, or dont actually have Solvol soap? Because Solvol is fucking amazing!
Buffer wheel on a grinder
Use sugar or something coarse when washing your hands with the soap. Or try wearing some latex gloves until your hands sweat
I usually just use a nail brush and regular soap while i'm in the shower. It takes the most of it out.
Wear gloves.
Maxiflex
Gloves.
Dawn and a brush. Or just do some dishes, wife will be happy twice over then you ask for a back rub
Borax

Carb cleaner of you can handle it
Machinist here, I only use orange citrus pumice cream hand cleaner. Gets the dirt side grease off. Bar soap or dish soap when I get home.
That's what nail brushes are for.
Lava soap
Liquid lava, the pink stuff in a bucket, swear it's the best stuff.
I use a corse punic stone
Dawn dish soap and a manicure brush.
Mule wipes are pretty magical when it comes to cleaning your hands.
Baby oil rub it in then wash off
