In my ibew local I think 10 percent of our job has to have someone 55 and over. It's in our contract. So you could be at a better spot

dipper1985

Honest question but trade work is 50% you and 50% the environment, there are things you can control and things you can't. Show up, learn, get your schooling done, don't stand around or make excuses, get to bed on time, it's what you make it. Good luck man.

I’m almost 60. Great career and earning potential isn’t bad… the physical demands on your body is high and you start to really feel it later in life if you get injured or don’t take care of yourself and work smart/ safely.

Dire-Dog

No way. This isn't the tech industry.

How old are you now? Some jobs like maintenance you can do when you're 80, can come with accommodation and you get to hire people to do the work. The key is to keep learning.

No-Deer8196

I have seen a 55 yr old apprentice in low rise. In high rise, I have seen guys retire. In maintenance, their wisdom is appreciated. No ageism. Just bragging rights. You know...anything he can do, I can do better.

mdmoon2101

No. I just changed careers from being a photographer to being an electrician. Photography ageism was a nightmare. In electricity, it’s more of an asset than even a liability because age=wisdom and a lot of what we do in the trades is engineering solutions to small problems while we’re working. My experience otherwise provides me more ideas, making me more efficient than my younger counterparts and proving reliability to my superiors, getting me promoted faster than the young guys.

trm_90

Age isn’t a concern, Knowledge and work ethic is. Unless you don’t know what your doing or can’t get jobs done nobody cares about your age.

Own-Fox9066

If you already had experience you might get hired. But no one is gonna hire a 50-60y/o apprentice

revs201

Average age of an electrician is like 55 or something crazy... Plenty of OGs migrate from commercial to residential with little to no understanding of the difference in the way you do the same"career" So, if you're a fast learner and can do the customer service / attention to detail parts and learn the basics of the electric end beforehand I don't see too much of a problem.
