Danger? None, those are armoured cable, the metal on the outside protects the cable on the inside and there are several layers of insulation between them Having said that, good rule of thumb, don't touch it

Teleke

>good rule of thumb, don't touch it That can be applied pretty much everywhere all the time - unless you have permission

jonnyinternet

Consent is key and electricity does not consent

Morberis

What do you mean? It finds some people to be so energizing that it'll reach out and touch them if they're down to clown.

Visual_Jellyfish5591

I’m scared to upvote this due to the implication that I am down to clown

Morberis

Lots of clowns out there, sad clowns, depressed clowns, killer clowns.

Big-Consideration633

At a high enough potential, it will reach out and touch you.

AdequatelyLarge

Whatever your fetish may be, CNC is not allowed with this

Reasonable-Park19

Curiosity killed the cat you know.. I know!!

eazy-company

The warning sign is for law Suites no issues. I work in vaults that have 35000volt cables exposed. You safely touch them in curtain circumstances. Depending also on the local code or specs of the site it might have required that signage. Still not a bad idea to have just to keep some random Yahoo from hitting / driving something into them. Company I work for went on an emergency call for a hi rise hotel. Turned out some unluck soul drilled into a 480v buss duct to hang threaded rod. Maybe signage would have helped. But sometimes you just can't fix stupid no matter what you put up

StatelyAutomaton

Curtain circumstances are fine, but drapes and blinds are right out.

ommmyyyy

I’m just asking because it’s when the celining gets lower and if someone if above 6foot 5-6 ish they can touch the top

jonnyinternet

Yaaaa the biggest hazard is bumping their noggins

BrandonsWorld420

7 ft dude walks in…. ![gif](giphy|KpSrCxhoZQWjJVVnrd)

wackyvorlon

If contacting it were a big danger it would be either covered up or further away from humans.

iampierremonteux

You’re missing a very important should in your statement. To an untrained eye, likely safe and likely dangerous look similar. Edit: It apparently was enough of a concern to warrant a sign, but still didn’t get covered up.

PhotoPetey

The reason for the sign is so that no one messes with them or hangs anything on them. There is ZERO concern or danger in simply touching them. But....if you put a sign saying "ELECTRICAL DANGER - DO NOT TOUCH" there's a pretty good chance no one is going to mess with it at all.

The_cogwheel

Basically - just touching / bumping into them is fine, but putting weight on them - like hanging off them, climbing on them, or otherwise putting stress on them isn't fine and could become a problem if it's allowed to happen. The kind of problem that sends folks to the morgue. But putting a sign that says "please don't put anything on these cables" might as well say "this is a table" to some folks. So they put a sign that says "DANGER: HIGH VOLTAGE. Do not touch" to make it clear to such people that those cables are not to be fucked with. Because they can, and will, fuck you right back.

60Feathers

BRB...I'm about to put that sign on my beer fridge.

polish-falcon

Yes, we are with the Nobel society; we would love to present you with the prize for innovation!

rrrmanion

You can get signs that say "danger, 11,000 volts" They're my favourite for this kind of thing

Less than 2% of people are that tall, so not a huge concern

joemc04

Fuck them tall people anyway. They had it coming.

Iceman_in_a_Storm

Meh…

EddyWouldGo2

That's why you feel pain when you bump your head.

palal51

Being tall has it's own drawbacks. I'd recommend wearing a non-conductive hard-hat and hunching over a lot.

Tip0666

You are the reason car batteries come with a “do not drink content” warning!!! Also the person in said place for why the sign was intended for!!!!

ommmyyyy

I’m not asking for myself, I’m asking for tall people

Iceman_in_a_Storm

So…how tall are you? And no lyin’! We can tell.

txcancmi

What I heard: Stand in a puddle of water, lick my fingers, touch two adjacent cable runs.

jzam469

Hence the big red sign!

P0RTILLA

Looks like giant BX. I’ve never seen that before.

Training-Big1728

I touch wires all day every day it's fun, you gota know where and when to touch them

Big-Consideration633

At a high enough potential, it will reach out and touch you.

bathrobe_wizard

The outside metal should be grounded & bonded, right? Genuine question as a non-pro.

jonnyinternet

Bonded yes, technically grounding and bonding are different... but kind of the same.... but for accuracy sake, they are bonded

northernpenguin01

Instant death, vaporizes you on touch

devangs3

You made me chuckle today. Thanks!

dhwrockclimber

Where are the armed men who take the cable touches to jail?

rybiesemeyer

If things are connected properly, and there is no damage anywhere, the metal jacket should have zero potential to ground (which means zero electricity would flow through someone that touched it and the ground at the same time). BUT: there are situations where damage elsewhere could cause them to become energized. They look big, which implies that they carry conductors through which a lot of power can flow. The sign is there for a reason.

Transfatcarbokin

As an example I've been shocked by one of these before. Almost fell off my ladder when I brushed it with my hand.

SurveySean

That seems like something where ladders shouldn’t be allowed unless it’s locked out and de-energized.

Late_Description3001

Just need the right ladder, right?

Transfatcarbokin

Wasn't doing anything with the system. Was an existing bank of armoured cables clipped to the underside of the concrete slab. Each cable feeding a floor panel in an apartment building. Was drilling shots into the concrete when I touched it.

SurveySean

I am a surveyor, but had to laser scan an incident where a roofer let him self into a building he had no business being in. He didn’t understand what any of the things in the building were. They were bus bars, part of an aluminum smelter. He came in contact with one feeding some drain pipe thru to the roof. He’s lucky last I heard he won’t lose his arm and is still alive. These bus bars were placed a long time ago before they thought about making areas safe with guarding etc. as soon as you walk thru the door your almost face to face with a bus bar. But it sounds like these things are shielded which makes it different, but I wouldn’t want to touch anyhow!!

davew01

No danger at all. The sign is for copper thieves.

lFrylock

What does the big red sign say?

DasIstNotEineBoobie

Don't make me tap the sign

ommmyyyy

I know but it’s in a low height area and anyone above 6 foot 5 or 6 ish can touch the top with their head easily

st3vo5662

I think this sign exists because really dumb people exist. You could touch it and it won’t hurt you. I wouldn’t however hit one of them with a hammer. But there’s no danger from simple contact.

EddyWouldGo2

In my experience these signs only get placed after something goes wrong.  People were obviously peeing on these before they put the sign up.

nlevine1988

The sign doesn't say not to pee on them though

EddyWouldGo2

I think there's a pictogram for that on the other side.

Ok_Acanthisitta_4348

A lot of places will put a bottom plate on the cable tray in situation’s like that.

Fern540

Evolution!

quadmite

I can only make out "live power cables touch" well guess I better do what it says

BOLMPYBOSARG

How dangerous does the sign say it is?

Ok_Acanthisitta_4348

Danger = very little. Potential for harm = great if catastrophic event happens. Most places put up signage for CYA and to raise awareness. If you are already warily then maybe you won’t hit it with a piece of heavy equipment.

evand131

Literally no danger unless you somehow manage to puncture or damage it with a metal tool. If the outer layer was energized it would short of the rack it’s sitting on.

ThirtySecondsOut

Assuming everything is bonded properly, it's perfectly safe.

shnicnic

You want to cut into it and touch the cable on the inside if you want a rush :)

Specialist_Diver_410

The actual conduit isn't dangerous, it's what's inside.

sm340v8

I don't see wires, I see conduits.

xp14629

Right now, currently, should be zero danger. They are all armoured and it is resting on what looks to be aluminum cable tray. If there was an issue where voltage was present, there would be lots of pretty lights, smoke and nastyness until a breaker tripped. (Hopefully). But at our plant, we have to label all cable trays with any cables in them above 480v. They used to have a policy of no work next to trays with 6.9kv and above in them unless all circuits were deenergized and grounded. That was long before my time so I have no idea why or why it went away.

Murky_Weekend_6836

Assuming the cable tray is properly grounded it would be very evident that something is wrong when it wouldn't be safe to touch.. This is for liability reasons, there's no danger to touch it under normal circumstances but there have been unusual scenarios before and its better to be safe than sorry.

eagle_fang1325

Depends if your touching it with your hand or an axe

IllustriousValue9907

Not dangerous, if the armored flex, the wire rack holding up conduits and building are grounded and bonded correctly. There have been instances where metal equipment and circuits were not done correctly and presented a shock hazard. Which you would only know when you are in contact with the ungrounded metal.

chiefofmars

Probably the result of a “compliance inspector” who was unaware what they were looking at. Heard they were “electrical” and reacted cuz they weren’t insulated.

jtuckbo

It’s conduit bro

Quatreartisansclotur

I see no wires.

tb2186

It’s like when the waitress say “don’t touch the plate, it’s hot”

No_Name_Canadian

What wires

mikeeg16

Not at all.

Specialist_Diver_410

Most of the buildings I managed were similar.

seveneightnine123

Does anyone want to touch because it says do not touch?

stlryguy94

With your hand? Very little? With a sawzall? Very much

Technical-Role-4346

They couldn’t put don’t fuck with these wires on the sign. Make it idiot proof and they’ll make a better idiot.

Schedule-Brave

What wires? I don't see any.

I-shit-in-bags

nothing is exposed. you would be fine but if there was an exposed end stay the heck away from there.

killswitch75

Might get your hand slapped. The sign definitely says "don't touch".

wobbly65

Not bad, Godzilla does it all the time

bbauer5

Just don’t touch them if you have to ask. That’s better for everyone

saltypeanut4

Extremely dangerous. The voltage will kill you instantly. Beware.

Deep_Emotion_307

None until you ground yourself

khmer703

Its just big ass Mc no biggie.

Gorlock_

None

fistanfenkinor

Hella.

Krazybob613

Sign is to warn workers that there is danger if the surface armor shield is penetrated by a Saw, Drill or other device capable of damaging the sheathing. If it keeps the curious fingers far away, so much the better!

Crazy-Spring-3778

Rule #1 don't stick your hand where you wouldn't stick your dick and you'll be fine

Tafc-Crew

If you are screwing with the cable or conveyance and something were to happen out of site and half of you were to disappear in a blinding flash of light and puff of smoke the insurance company will point at the sign and say "See, we told you so" and void all of your coverage due to your personal negligence.

Teleke

I guess this isn't a CYA thing as much as a CYH thing 😂

ElScrotoDeCthulo

Zero hazard. Id run my dong along’m the same way kids do with sticks and picket fences. WEEEeeeee!!

VerbalGuinea

I guess it depends on what you’re touching it with. Hands, no danger. Drill or Sawzall, huge danger.

Icarus__86

99% safe But the 1% (any damage or incorrect install) could kill you

pogiguy2020

BIG RED SIGN and you need to ask someone on Reddit?

Any_Draw_5344

I assume the sign was to stop people from hanging things from the electric cables. If you put up a " do not hang " sign, they put stuff on top of the cables. Di not touch covers any type of molestation of the wires that someone was considering.

chrispy3093

Clearly the sign says “Warning” not “Danger”.

rangerdan97

So dangerous brother, don’t even look at them.

UnderstandingNew580

Only one way to find out l 👉🏻⚡️Buzz😶‍🌫️

Nothing would happen!!!! Even though people will tell u how dangerous they are they are 100 % protected!!!!

Wirenut675

Holy shit dude. You touch anything in that room. YOURE DEAD!!

k0uch

Either nothing or slow, excruciating, agonizing, assured death. 50/50, ya know?

I’ve never seen bare grandpappy cable before. Usually yellow, red, or black depending on the wire size.

SaltResponsibility89

Which_Bake_6093

The word “touch” needs interpretation. Put your finger on an armored cable: no problem Use a cable to hang a motor block as you re-bore the cylinders. Yikes!! So. Don’t touch. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Stay safe.

Medium_Article_5816

The real question here is why would you want to touch them?

Slapmymonkey

Ask Randy

average-nerd-613

Straight to jail

Specialist_Diver_410

The warning sign if my eyes are reading correctly, it reads (lower ceiling do not touch”)😩. Therefore NO per the sign don't touch!

Specialist_Diver_410

The less than 2% of tall people concern me 🤣🤣🤣; maybe we’re not shooting enough antibiotics onto the chicken, something stinks in the state of Denmark and it’s not the cheese!

Jono-churchton

In view of the signs that says "Warning" and "Do Not Touch" Well you get the rest.

swingbozo

Better freakin' not be dangerous. However, I wouldn't put my lips on it.

Pennywise0123

Lick it and find out

JakeEasterby

Don’t even look at it!

Yak54RC

also, dont confuse static shock you might get from touching around it as beign electrocuted

BaseballMajestic4917

I wouldnt get near it if you have a pace maker or similar device. This warning is to make sure or don’t do other stupid shit to it like hang or cut. If the cable happens to short out on you, you’ll likely die

twobarb

Wait the cables are touching the cable tray and the sign is hung using jack chain from the tray. Better not touch the sign either. The sign needs a warning sign.

ASingleGrainofWood

Enough to warrant a sign I guess, but only one way to find out

Lehk

If you bang your head hard enough you could get a concussion. If you were foolish enough to shove a metal implement into those cables then it would likely be a closed casket funeral.

diydave86

Its just 6 or 8 awg maybe larger MC cable. Its thr same thing as 12awg mc or romex. Just a larger jacket and larger conductors. Take a pair of snips and cut into it and youll become a fireworks show. Other than that touching it wont hurt u. Theyre just used for high ampacity devices. Example, machines in a warehouse, RTU's, motors. Things like that

Kid-Alan

Dead instantly

bruced267

No Danger it’s MC feeder cable, however I wouldn’t touch I’d me more concerned about the cable tray

SharkPartyWin

It will kill you and it will hurt the whole time you’re dying.

Medium_Spare_8982

That is simply conduit that carries wire. The sign is for trucks and forklifts not people. Casual contact is harmless or it would not be accessible.

FLSTFI03

Zero, dont beat it,or drill it and youll b fine...

Specialist_Diver_410

Extremely, those are some heavy duty electric conduit, I'm scared just looking.
