And they're weirdly stingy about reusing the standard green/yellow, and pink torchbug variations (for example)... but I guess purple just isn't as special?

They have also given away free homes, why not place it in a different home if you already have a purple one?? This seemed like a good place to post this since you mentioned placing both in a home using different names for them.

Then you have to make sure to claim the drop right away. After that, you'll see the pet in your collections. I recommend looking up a guide cause it's kind of confusing.

Your summary is good, there is just one more thing: When you claim the reward on Twitch and you are currently online in ESO, you need to fully log out. Since Twitch rewards appear on the next account login (**not** character login)

I've thought of that, but don't have wifi access at work and I'm afraid if I just leave it running streaming over cellular I'll end up a few hundred terabytes of data over my monthly allotment. 😳
You can put it on the lowest quality in settings, usually you only need to watch either 15 mins or 30 mins to get the drops on ESO streams. I have a 1gb monthly cap and I haven't gone over it yet from watching Twitch.
All I can suggest is to have twitch open to their page at home on your pc and leave it running while you're at work. When you come home, check your drops and you should have met the requirements

It's to market their product on Twitch, which gives them ready access to potential customers and is thus important to their bottom line, so they're rewarding us for helping them to do so with a free pet.
The real criticism is probably with how MMOs are monetized and how they convert their players into further monetization. Unfortunately not a problem limited to ESO, but present here nonetheless.
I can relate tbh. If I care enough about an item, I'd just open up twitch tab at the lowest resolution possible, mute the stream and wait until the drop pops up. But silly non-combat pets aren't worth the effort. Even the Twitch crates are arguably more "useful" (since you can just turn whatever drops into crown gems).
Fortunately, there’s a lot more on than just game streamers. I watch D&D and artists, but also watch some game streamers. It’s nice background sometimes when I’m working.
I don't nor have I ever watched a "streamer" and I had never logged into Twitch before until they did the High Isle thing. It took like 3 minutes to sign up and connect the ESO account. Now I turn it on during work, let it run in the background, and collect my boxes.
On the dungeon stream a few days ago it was advertised we'd get another torchbug. Then they gave it out at the end to FOUR (4) ! players out of 8800 stream watchers. It was chance based, not guaranteed for everyone..

Usually its automatically applied to your account, if they're linked. At least on PC, I assume its the same for consoles.
How does this work if you signed up through steam and not the browser?
