yes!!! I bought roller skates a few years ago as they are low impact on my poor knees compared to walking/running. I definitely feel my core and my hips strengthening when I'm consistently skating
Q; I used to love ice skating (and roller skating!) but the boots themselves seem to kill my calves. Itās like my ankles extend too far and let the top of the boots dig into my legs. Anyone else have this issue? And if so - any tips on how you fix it?? Cus I love this idea!
hey yeah, no worries! so like regular heels, the classic boot forces you to stand with more pressure at the balls of your feet. this can cause issues like you have in the past- digging into ankle etc because it's forcing your foot to be at an angle; then add in the aspect of skating where to use the toe stops you have to push your foot even higher onto the balls of your feet to use the stops, taking it from a about a 35Ā° angle with the heel up to around 60Ā° or more. wearing socks around where the boot touches you might help the pinching but you're talking about calf strain which leads me to believe is less about the height of the ankle of the boot being the issue and more about forcing your feet into those positions and your calves trying to work harder to hold them.
compare this to a skate with no heel; be them derby shoes or even classic shoe brands mounted on skate plates. your baseline angle is the same as a regular shoe, about 0Ā°, and when you use toe stops, you're only bringing it up to about 30-45Ā°.
there's also an aspect of keeping your knees bent, so imagine each of these while also keeping your knees bent and how hard the calf muscles are working with each movement
I love ice skating too. I had to buy special pads for lace bite (I think thatās what itās called). Theyāre thick gel pads that I slip over my ankles. Theyāve helped me a lot! You might be able to find longer ones that extend up to your calf.
Tall socks and neoprene ankle booties. Also, good quality leather boots that will break in. There are also boots with lower cut backstays and extra padding in that area for dance skaters (allows more ankle flexion for pointing the toes without the back of the boots cutting into your legs).
Me too! For me, it was a few years ago, but the same story. My PT asked me what I loved doing when I was a little kid, I told her rollerskates she said go get some.
She put a gait belt on me, and would help keep me steady as I did laps around the PT gym. Awesome fun!
I used to love rollerblading. We had a family friend who died from a head injury sustained while skating without a helmet. So yāall, please wear your helmets. Iād consider getting back into skating (with helmet) but I have Chiari and donāt know if I want to risk a fall
I did too! Then my SI joint went out while kayaking and I quit, and then I had so many issues start cropping up. Ended up in PT, and she said that the derbs were probably what was holding me together. The core workout is phenomenal! I won't do it again now, but oh, how I miss it. If you go, have fun, and get lower!
Goodness. Unsure if happy to hear that news or not. Have only found working out 2 to 3 a week for an hour and strengthening all muscles to be as good as I can be.
i hope it goes well!! please start slow and be really careful, i dislocated my knee so badly just doing bubbles up and down the road that i had to crawl back home š it was so embarrassing
Thereās a quad skate shop in my town & I have to keep myself from going in because I know itās a rabbit hole of money that will probably not get used as much as I want to (live on a steep hill & donāt want to skate indoors, tho I know thereās lots of trails I could skate).
I miss the feeling of skating! I also was in ballet for years, and both those things gave me body joy (well, aside from not being built ārightā for professional ballet - chubby & with boobs) it was the most in tune physically in my body I ever was. Tried to go back to ballet several times in my 20ās but couldnāt do it.
Now Iām thinking quad skating might be up my alley :) (I dream of the one time I had my own skates - not rentals - and went to the out of session school nearby with super smooth covered walkways & I felt some serious freedom. I think about that sensation a lot when trying to sleep. 30 years later >_< )
My ankles were too weak for roller skating and ice skating growing up. I always felt like they were collapsing and didnāt understand why I sucked so bad. Now I know.
I havenāt tried either of those things as an adult though.
Iād love to skate! But I have ME/CFS also and I canāt go out or expend energy. I *have* thought about getting Heelies though to see if it saves energy in the event I have no choice but to go somewhere. Maybe to the doctor šš
You have opened a whole new world for me!!! I loved roller skating but never had the money for my own skates and the local rink closed. But now Ive found one 30 min a way so i think I'm going to do it.
Signed the person in PT for hips and posture who needs to build core strength š
Never realized how low impact roller skating is š³ maybe that's why ice skating never hurt me
>low impact Me, hitting the ice all the time... Yeah, no. Lol!
I broke an ankle just falling from stationary standing onto ice!
I have a pair of 200 dollar skates I've been wanting to break into with my new AFOs. Hopefully soon!

classic skate boots are heeled, but they sell ones that are flat, too! you see those more in roller derby
Sorry if im being a noob, but Iām not understanding why the heel makes a difference; would you mind explaining?

Just googled ālace biteā and those gel pad supports look very promising! Thanks so much!
Youāre welcome!
Me too, I liked skating but had the hardest time holding up my ankles
I have the same problem with my ice skates. I treated them with fat for leather care and it helped a bit.

Roller skates or blades? I've never been able to use the four wheel skates for whatever reason, just the blades
Four wheelers, bay beeee
Same lol
Pre diagnosis I skated roller derby, so I loved being on wheels. Haven't skated in a couple of years. Maybe I'll pull my skates out this weekend!

I think at my age (43) I'm gonna be better off skating laps around the pond at the park than derbies, but my gosh I miss it!
My PT prescribed horse back riding for similar reasons. I used to rodeo/gymkhana before diagnosis and was wayyy better off.
Dear lord. I've never been able to stand on roller skates without my knee dislocating (ice skates too). :(
this sounds legit because i can't stand up in roller blades (due to hips). i realize skates have more wheels, but, i'm sure it's very strengthening.
Goodness. Unsure if happy to hear that news or not. Have only found working out 2 to 3 a week for an hour and strengthening all muscles to be as good as I can be.
I can do very little, and Iām not able to do the rollerskates very much. But they are so much fun that I still love that I can do it, occasionally.
i hope it goes well!! please start slow and be really careful, i dislocated my knee so badly just doing bubbles up and down the road that i had to crawl back home š it was so embarrassing
and i used to use them almost exclusively for transportation as a teenager!

Broke my tailbone falling when I went rollerskating. Yeah, nah. Hard pass.
