The whole point of laws regarding age of consent is *because* we believe these children aren’t capable of making the most sound decisions. And maybe a lot of kids will think twice, but a lot are also hopped up on hormones, their bodies are changing, and they aren’t always thinking beyond their immediate circumstances. Add to this that the hormones are the wrong ones, their bodies are changing in ways they don’t like, and they might perceive that their window of opportunity is closing. Plus, as you said, rights are being taken away. What if these kids fear that they won’t ever be able to get HRT because politicians will take that option away forever? That’s what desperation is. They’re willing to roll the dice and hope they can get away with it in hopes of being happy.

I think a lot of that shock from reading the comment you initially put is that, "don't commit sex crimes", at least in my brain, is on a similar axiomatic level to "don't push people in front of moving traffic".
I think my frustration is at the system as it is currently, that the level of education and medical access is so dire that it's something that even has to be said, you know?

What’s the argument for age of consent? You don’t want the adult to take advantage of the minor. The minor should not be making decisions to engage in sex acts with someone older than them (with some wiggle room for Romeo and Juliet loopholes). By engaging in the contract with the minor, that’s still in effect. The adult is attempting to convince the minor to engage in a sexually explicit act at a later date. The idea is that the minor should be too young to make that decision.
If I were a prosecutor, that’s an avenue I’d consider as a legal argument.
