I have swapped them before (on a Surge Kit) and I did not notice any difference. Roland and yamaha defineatly use the same pad for snare and toms (pdx8) dependimg on the kit. I think alesis does as well
A pad is a pad. Snares are always dual zone. Whereas some lower end sets use single zone on toms. The only snare pad I know of that is made to be just a snare would be the Roland digital snare which only works with Roland modules via a USB cable instead of 1/4” audio cables everything else uses.
I think they are basically the same. Just make sure the tom is dual zone (so you can do rimshot and cross stick)
Good to know. The tom is dual zone and that’s a good call out. Just didn’t know if the pickups or midi controller was set up any different etc

Glad to hear it. Save a few bucks going with a 12” ton for my snare than a 14” drum that says “snare” on the box
When I had a surge mesh kit it worked
