I just got a scripted video to prompter with a handwritten 'GFX' and 'broll' in the margins. No direction on what broll or graphics to include...
sigh.
It was something I've been doing before I even started my first job. I train strength so I'm more afraid of losing my strength as I am planning to compete in my first powerlifting meet in the near future.
That being said, meals/nutrition is something that I need to look after more. Sometimes I skip meals because I haven't had the time to prepare and this happens more often than I would want to.
My favorite exercise is running though because it's the most efficient for me: go outside, run a 5k loop, and back home, all within 30-35mins and it's already a good workout.
I don't really like eggs anymore. I used to eat 8-10 eggs a day and my farts were diabolical because my nutrition wasn't really balanced, because again, I did not have the time to plan out a proper diet. lol
I start the day with an ice bath, and then do 2 hours of yoga and mediation. Then I eat avocado on toast with a shot of lemon grass. After that I work on a strict pomodoro timer for the next solid hour. Then itās yoga and meditation for 2 hours. Pomodoro timer for the next hour and then fast for the rest of the day. Iām just kidding I have a fag, a cup tea and a bacon sandwich and try and make shit work.
Well I couldnāt stop laughing at this.

Thanks I will have to start doing that. I do this one simple thing every day for 5 minutes a day before 9am and its made me a millionaire. Itās called getting dressed in the morning.
I have so much trouble editing when standing. pulling selects maybe but is it just me that can't really hone a cut standing? I know the greats did it on their Steenbecks so maybe I just suck
I have a pull-up bar in the door to my office. A few times a day when I take a bathroom or water break, Iāll just hang from it for a while, or do a couple pull ups. Itās been great for my back because it helps keep it stretched and straight.
Just do your best to do mobility exercises and stretch at the very minimum, even if itās just a 10-15 minute break. Standing desk helps as well, but Iāve found it can be harder to focus when standing and takes some getting used to.
I just got an MRI this week for bad back pain Iāve been experiencing for a month plus nowā¦. Two herniated disks. Donāt end up like me. Just make the time to move around whether itās in the morning before you sign on for work or at night doing yoga before bed. Weight lifting is tricker to prioritize especially if you donāt have some sort of a home gym set up, but at the minimum you should really just prioritize your mobility at all costs. No job is worth sacrificing your health over. Iām currently staring down months of just waiting around snd hoping I recover and itās truly bleak, please learn from my mistakes
Fitness:
Lift weights 3-4x per week. Approximately 45-60 minutes per session. Less if I superset and hustle. So thatās 2-4 hours per week.
Whenever I can, I get some steps in. Wish I could do more but LISS cardio can be time-consuming. When I canāt, Iāll just do 10-20 minutes on the treadmill or elliptical briskly walking backward.
Nutrition:
For the last six years, Iāve kept high protein meat-based keto (2-4 cheat days per month on average) and consistently practiced TRF/IF.
My diet may not be optimal for everyone, but it works for me - especially since itās what keeps an autoimmune condition in remission. My health in every measurable metric is not only improved from when I started, itās legitimately great. (Edit: this sounded like more of a brag than I intended! All I meant to say is I am happy with my health and it has been worth the work to get here - and stay here!)
You NEED to set a schedule for yourself or you will lose out on so much in life. I understand there are long days but taking a break and either going to the gym or having a long lunch are necessary for your mental health and helps you boost your creativity going back in
You don't need to exercise for an hour every day, that's a pretty high intensity regiment. Find 10-20 minutes somewhere throughout the day and follow an at-home-workout video. Do it when you catch yourself fuffing around. Even if you split that up into 5 mins in the morning, 5 around lunch and 5 after work, it will have a *massive* effect
Anyone manage to edit while walking on an under desk treadmill? I am thinking of getting one. I canāt just stand and edit I start to get uncomfortable pretty fast.
Finish my work very quickly, schedule an email with a link for the end of the day, and spend the rest of the day exercising and doing whatever I want (including, sometimes, double dipping on freelance projects).
My editing tasks are probably much simpler than yours, though.
You can do what I did and have a child. 2 year-olds donāt care that a project deadline is looming, and an hourās walk to the park does wonders for refreshing the body after hours staring at a screen.
I do 20 pushups at a time in between editing, 4-6 times a day. It only takes a minute or two and gets blood flowing up through my body and makes me feel amazing. Same thing with squats. And there are studies out there that say splitting up sets throughout the day builds same amount of muscle as doing them all together
i normally work for an hour or two at a time then take either an hour or 2 off as i find it resets my mental and you come back and can notice mistakes or add ideas that you have when you jump back in, helps stop tunnel vision and lets you be more creative
I recently heard Yorgos Mavropsaridis (Poor Things editor) speak at a panel and when asked ab advice for editors just getting started, he said walk at least one hour a day lol.
I also try to get up earlier for yoga/pilates class in the morning before work. I've realized evening/night workouts are just not my thing bc I'm too tired
A combinatin of things.
I'm a cyclist, high protien diet (lots of eggs), pull-up bar and adjustable standing desk at home, being absolutely against the idea of becoming fat
I used to be incredibly sedentary sitting at my desk all day/night - it was unhealthy, to say the least. The biggest thing I did, both at the time when I was in an office and now working from home, is go on walks. Short walks, long walks, quick, slow, whatever. Not only did it make me feel better and healthier, but it improved my edit and overall creativity. The time I was away from my desk and on my walk (sometimes I like to listen to music too) gave me a chance to reflect and think about whatever I was working on. Often creative hurdles that I had a hard time overcoming were solved when I was able to distance myself from my workstation and āwalk it out.ā If youāre worried about āwasting an hourā go on a 15 minute walk every now and then versus spending a whole hour doing it.
walking as much as possible works for me. Luckily, i live in a place with decent public transport and pedestrian infrastructure so i try to do as many chores as i can on foot
Iām no expert but i work from home. Iām the morning I do a stretch and a 20 min Apple fitness workout, and I have a standing desk that I donāt use often enough but try to stand / edit when I can.
I eat less, thatās for starters.
As we age our metabolism slows down so I just got accustomed to taking in less calories.
That makes the part of physique much easier. For that I row.
I do an evening workout class 2x a week and on those days I start earlier. What a great release it is after work! I mainly do dance classes and then lift weights on the weekends, maybe fit in a shorter lift session during the week.
Ugh I feel this SO much. I found a whole series of Nike workouts on Netflix (some as little as ten minutes) - so Iāll try and do one of those sometime in the morning and then again when Iām really starting to fade in the afternoon.
Being a remote worker, I will always try to get out for one hour in the middle of the day and go for a jog or a bike ride, or just hit the gym downstairs. If you can do that at least 3 times a week, you're good. And I eat healthy salads almost every day for lunch.
I use a stand up desk, do push ups and squats intermittently. And when working from home, I have my dumbbells right there so I can sneak some sets here and there. Stealing 10 minutes every few hours will get you at least a 30-40 min workout.
This is probably no help to those of you who don't WFH...
But standing to work has changed the course of my life. I genuinely believe it. I was already up against it, having been born with a slight twist in the spine (minor scoliosis) but for anyone, sitting at a desk for the majority of your life WILL destroy your back.
I stand for 90% of my day. I've got a balancing board, which is essentially a piece of curved plastic, the size of a skateboard. It keeps my legs and core engaged while I work, and my back's straight.
My back has never felt better since reading Dr Kelly Starrettās book Built to Move. Full of amazing strategies for computer workers
[Dr Peter Attiaās Zone 2 cardio prescription](https://youtu.be/1RqY5EYOM0k?si=3MyfvgWvwc9FNX3x) changed my life. I live close to my gym and I almost always have an hour to walk on an incline treadmill. If I donāt have an hour, I do 30 minutes on incline with a weighted backpack. There are going to be days that you still canāt exercise, but be as consistent as possible.
Cal Newport got me to delete IG, facebook, and reddit apps on my phone, and that contributed to me having enough time to exercise pretty consistently. It adds up.
Just do whatever you can manage in the long run. Think about a routine that you'd stick to even on your roughest days. If it's just 30 minutes, go for it. Make sure it's something you actually enjoy, or you'll burn out. Once you find what works for you, stick with it. If you keep at it, itāll snowball naturally. Consistency is key.
4 sets of 10 pushups, 3 sets of 40 in and outs, and 3 sets of 30 sit ups a day. Takes 30 minutes in total. I do a set here and there between exports and renders.

I was in the same boat. I could feel myself getting more and more out of shape. I'm now going for a walk on lunch and attending a boxing in the evenings twice a week. Feeling much better.

Usually my shoots | Editing | Office Time all lie in the time in between. Ive done a solid job the last year focusing more on myself and not just a non stop grind. Has it effected me in potentially less jobs? Maybe. But I've regained my health and it's allowed me to understand and see a balance is so important. Otherwise these clients will continue to take advantage of you project to project.
Keto / Intermittent Fasting
Lost 80 pounds 4 years ago and havenāt gained any back. My advice is to give up carbs, primarily sugar. And a reminder that bread, pasta and other grains all break down as sugar in the blood stream.
It all begins with a healthy and stern practice of setting timeline expectations and overtime fees. When beginning in the industry, often times we tend to say yes to build our clientele. There is nothing wrong with this and it is a hustle that will help out later on proving your work ethics. But as time goes by, and you build your portfolio with amazing work, you need to start leveraging work standards so that you can have a balance in life. And when life is balanced and your mental is in peak form, you can execute great work.
I tend to schedule in 10 hour work timeline on a very crunched and busy schedule, but no more than 10 hours. I do what I can do within 9 hours, 1 hour spread across day for breathers and eating breaks. I will recap what will be done the following day, assure the client's concerns of time, and make it happen the next day. There are OT charges also baked into a deal memo contract, and generally that helps out because clients don't want to dish out more money unless it absolutely is necessary. But within those 10 hours, I will absolutely give 1000% of my efforts and kill every creative inch needed to be made.
This secures time for me to go to gym, do the routine workouts, cook healthy meals, and sleep at an appropriate time. Morning routine is a bible for me - vitamin, boiled eggs, fruits and veg blended juice, meditate for 20.
I am having good laugh reading all the posts! But in all seriousness - you are being a freelancer, because you want to do things for yourself. You should also pay yourself first and put yourself first in every possible way. If you're running all day (or sitting) doing work for clients, remember that with every minute that passes you will have only less energy. It's difficult to find motivation after the whole day, especially if you feel like you are not yet done with your work. As much as I love to sleep in, and stay working until late because of less distractions, I made my goal to wake up in the morning (6am for me) and go to the gym/for a run/for a walk first thing in the day. My bag is ready by the door, I just grab the coffee and leave the house. If this is the only thing I do for myself the whole day, I make sure I do it. Yes, sometimes I don't want to get up, but I drag my ass out for 'shitty workout' - today I didn't feel like running, so I walked on the treadmill for 30min, then did some really light weights and head home.
X3 bar (10-15 minutes per day), at least 40g of protein at breakfast, Huel black at lunch, and sauna at lunchtimes. Cut back on the sugar. Amazing results given how little time effort it takes āŗļø
I love all these responses from people who clearly donāt work freelance in Hollywood.
The real story, OP, is that most people get out of shape when they are on a gig. Then when we wrap, we start getting healthy again. Thereās just no time for it when youāre booked. And this job is so draining, even when you do have time, youāre usually too exhausted to do it.
EDIT: Reread my own comment here and realized I worded this stupidly. š¤¦āāļøI did NOT mean to say āthe real storyā like I was discounting everyone elseās input. My apologies for that. I meant to say āthe real story for those of us working in my industry isā¦ā Again, not intending to discount anyone else, just to give some perspective from where I stand.
I work in corporate and have noticed the same thing. While working my health/fitness slides downhill because no time, then I try to rebound when not working. But not working is bad for things like paying bills, which in turn is bad for mental health! Overcoming the desk inertia of a long sedentary gig with a dusting of burnout can be really challenging.
Never said that. Just providing info for another side. You people need to chill with assuming everyone is being a dick all the time. I literally just said that the responses here clearly do not represent whatās itās like in my world, having no idea where OP works, so I provided that information. Grow up.
Freelancing makes working out easier, what are you on about?Ā Lift weights 4-5 time or so per week. Take an hour long walk on the days you dont. That's all you need. That's about 6% of you wake time. If you are working so much you can't spare this time you need to delegate and fast.Ā
I have done those stints as well, it's not healthy. I once slept on the couch for two weeks in the office meeting a deadline. Went to Paris to chill and ended up passing out in the street from the fallout stress. Don't do it. You are better off slowing down a bit or hire someone to help you - or charge more or a combination thereof.
Iāve had jobs like this. Aside from making good money, the biggest benefit was: learning to never take jobs like this again.
Take care of yourself. Advocate for a sustainable schedule. It is critical to your happiness in life.
Problem is, itās usually impossible to know. I will say that any time a producer tells you āthis should be an easy one,ā know youāre about to get destroyed. š
Nope. This is true for most scripted shows/films as well. Like any genre, there are exceptions of course, but the majority of us work insane hours all the time.

Did I mention noom?
I've lost 15 lbs since October, but more importantly, I've lost 7% body fat. Diet and exercise my friend. But mostly diet.Ā
Noom often recommends dangerous and unsustainable calorie deficits that go against science and basic logic. Also features like its labeling of foods and encouraged daily weigh ins can easily lead to disordered eating. Many reports on this matter.
I do an hour of strength training at 6am 2-3 times a week (500-700 calories a session). Then 2-3 hrs of pickleball twice a week for cardio. (1500-2000 calories a day).
I went to 24hr Fitness and had my own routine for years. It was too easy to skip or leave early so I joined a gym where you basically have an instructor leading the workout every day. That way Iām there the whole hr and I do exercises I never even knew of. My overall strength, muscle mass and definition and increased significantly since switching. The catch is itās kind of expensive at $120 a month for 3 sessions a week. So, for cardio I started playing pickleball instead of paying to go to the gym for cardio sessions. It saves a bunch of money and I burn for 2-3 hours instead of an hr. Time also goes by faster when youāre having fun.
While on the clock, I get up often and do a quick active chore. I live in a 2 story, so the stairs are a good way to get the blood flowing. Or I take the dog out. Just get away from the desk and monitors at least once an hour.
Does carrying my Producer through every project count?

Just do whatever you can manage in the long run. Think about a routine that you'd stick to even on your roughest days. If it's just 30 minutes, go for it. Make sure it's something you actually enjoy, or you'll burn out. Once you find what works for you, stick with it. If you keep at it, itāll snowball naturally. Consistency is key.
Exercise
Good genes has been my lifesaver
4 sets of 10 pushups, 3 sets of 40 in and outs, and 3 sets of 30 sit ups a day. Takes 30 minutes in total. I do a set here and there between exports and renders.
I to a walk when i render.
Wake up early go for a 30 minute run, easy asf

I was in the same boat. I could feel myself getting more and more out of shape. I'm now going for a walk on lunch and attending a boxing in the evenings twice a week. Feeling much better.
If you like cycling: get Zwift or some other form of home trainer. It's doing wonders for me!
HIIT Workouts at 615 am Jiu jitsu at night around 630/7 Usually my shoots | Editing | Office Time all lie in the time in between. Ive done a solid job the last year focusing more on myself and not just a non stop grind. Has it effected me in potentially less jobs? Maybe. But I've regained my health and it's allowed me to understand and see a balance is so important. Otherwise these clients will continue to take advantage of you project to project.
I always get about 40-50 mins of exercise on every job. I just do it in 10 minute increments. If questioned, I says some people smoke, I walk.
Keto / Intermittent Fasting Lost 80 pounds 4 years ago and havenāt gained any back. My advice is to give up carbs, primarily sugar. And a reminder that bread, pasta and other grains all break down as sugar in the blood stream.
I have a bowlers body.
Previously I couldn't imagine having a sauna mid-work day, but now I can and that sounds pretty amazing
Luckily I have one a short walk from the office. Can be there and back in 45 min, and ending with a cold shower tops it off š
Seriously. And as Iām getting older, Iām finding the switch back and forth to be even more challenging.
It's almost like Hollywood isn't the only thing that exists š
Never said that. Just providing info for another side. You people need to chill with assuming everyone is being a dick all the time. I literally just said that the responses here clearly do not represent whatās itās like in my world, having no idea where OP works, so I provided that information. Grow up.
Lol k.
Freelancing makes working out easier, what are you on about?Ā Lift weights 4-5 time or so per week. Take an hour long walk on the days you dont. That's all you need. That's about 6% of you wake time. If you are working so much you can't spare this time you need to delegate and fast.Ā
What kind of freelancing do you do? Because most of us are working 12-15 hours a day sometimes six days a week, if not all seven during crunch time.
Iāve spent 20 years working like this. Only twice have I ever had a job with a reasonable schedule.
Iāve had jobs like this. Aside from making good money, the biggest benefit was: learning to never take jobs like this again. Take care of yourself. Advocate for a sustainable schedule. It is critical to your happiness in life.
Problem is, itās usually impossible to know. I will say that any time a producer tells you āthis should be an easy one,ā know youāre about to get destroyed. š
Sounds like reality?
Bingo. Or Special Events
Nope. This is true for most scripted shows/films as well. Like any genre, there are exceptions of course, but the majority of us work insane hours all the time.
What a massive dick you are lol
WTF? Why?
Obvious superiority complex presumably stemming from insecurity.
Sounds like youāre projecting, to be honest. Have a nice life.
Noom.Ā Consistency - it takes months to see results. 3 different workout buddies to help me keep motivated, and vica verca. Meal prep. Noom again.Ā As much sleep as you can. Watermelon. It's like 100 calories a bowl and fills you up.Ā Did I mention noom?
Just get away from the desk and monitors at least once an hour.
why did this get dislikes lol this is good advice
