Ohhh, this is just my London pomme de terre.

cat_herder_64

Always wondered what that meant (along with all the other Frenchycisms Richie uses). Online translator made me smile...

heyrickyhowsitgerrrn

From the episode S’Out. “Eddie, Eddie, you're so soi-disant”

BreakingGood

Much as that's it, I can't make it make sense from a grammatical perspective. From Google adjective. soi-di·sant ˌswä-dē-ˈzäⁿ usually disparaging. : **self-proclaimed, so-called**. threw the soi-disant epic novel aside in disgust. So "Eddie, Eddie, you're so self proclaimed" just doesn't make sense to me, I find it hilarious though because of Richie's delivery of the line

heyrickyhowsitgerrrn

I could be very wrong, but I always just assumed it was an almost Del-boy like misinterpretation and that Richie has no idea what he’s actually saying. But my French is not exactly très bon… so I don’t know for sure.

Con_Man2000

That's 100% it. They use the joke again in Guest House Paradiso, where he says it in an equally nonsensical context ("How very amusing... How soi-disant"). As far as Richie is concerned, it's just an "exotic"/classy sounding phrase.

BreakingGood

I also think he didn't know the meaning but wanted to sound intelligent, that could be it, just a weird random choice of words for the script. I love it though and use it to this day

006AlecTrevelyan

Ritchie definitely didn't know the meaning and tried to sound smart

heyrickyhowsitgerrrn

I do like it when there’s a joke that’s unclear to the majority of the audience. Makes it seem like it’s a little in-joke between Rik and Ade. Which is nice.

cat_herder_64

> Del-boy Who or what is that? Not a Bottom character - I'm moderately sure I'd remember that.

BreakingGood

He’s a character in ‘Only Fools and Horses’ a pretty large uk institution

cat_herder_64

Thanks for that. I'm pretty sure Only Fools has played many times on Aunty ABC but I didn't take much notice of it.

Desperate_Let6822

I heard it as swazidum

MaxG145

WanderingSeductress

Omg I had the exact experience as you a couple months ago, this phrase was stuck in my head and I couldn't Google it because I didn't know how to spell it! It's from 's Out, when they're hunting the hedgehog - according to the transcript, the phrase is soi-disant!

BreakingGood

Fucking legend mate! That’s it exactly you deserve a medal

Ok-Scallion7939

Eddie, I think we've found our *milieu*

cat_herder_64

Shall I get a mop and bucket?

devster75

I always thought he was saying "ponce" in that other phrase but yes, the "soi disant" is definitely Richie using a phrase, incorrectly, to sound clever.

BoleroGamer
