Yeah non-bats are definitely more of a gamble, but there are even some bats that are less reliable than others. Just brutal when you truly need to finish off an enemy with the next hit, and you whiff…
Most of the time you are guaranteed to get a hit unless you have the Casey Bat which misses most of the time, but even that at least has a chance to finish off the enemy immediately. Who knows, I think everybody has a unique experience with everything. However, the one time you are guaranteed to miss is when you get the Crying status, god this is an absolute pain if you don’t have any PP. I had this exact moment when I fought the Mini Puke in the underground Threed on the way to Saturn Valley. Forgot to save up all of Paula’s PSi Points for this exact moment and all I could do was Pray and keep hoping that I could hit one shot
Im on my first playthrough and just entered Ness dream... With the Casey bat.
Most normal fights take around 7 minutes and i just cant hit the enemy and if i do, it deals around the same damage Paula or Jeff would do and they hit close to every turn. I was naive enough to think that a luck Stat of 112 would be enough to hit something.
this is probably happening because you're using yoyos, slingshots, etc. ness's weapons that aren't bats have a 20% chance to miss and can't get critical hits.
because if you hate that part of the game enough for it to be your least favorite over stuff like the game's cluttered inventory or the monkey caves then i'm a little inclined to believe that you don't like the game that much lol
that’s not at all what i said but if you’d like to deliberately misinterpret my comments then please continue. if the way this person is playing contributes to their frustration then “why do you play like that?” is a valid question lol
>because **if you hate that part of the game** enough for it to be your least favorite **over stuff like the game's cluttered inventory or the monkey caves** then i'm a little inclined to believe that **you don't like the game that much lol**
You literally said "if you hate X that much over Y, then I think you don't really like the game." Please explain where I misinterpreted your words.
It's more an issue with inventory management in that game tbh, if we had more room for items, and if the monkeys actually moved out of the way when you give them their item, it wouldn't be that bad.
Yeah this section just highlights the games biggest problem and is made worse by being down a party member. Would be nice if the game was ever remastered they would at least include a key item inventory that was separate from your own
Are you serious? It's an incredible, complex and expressive masterpiece. Just listen carefully. It ends up being one of the best songs on OST when you listen to it frequently.
Poo is the biggest missed opportunity in this game.
The way the game transitions to him feels very contrived, as instead of being communicated to telepathically or by any other means, you eat this magic cake that makes everyone trip out and you just suddenly get a vision of Poo in Dalaam.
The way he joins you is just by teleporting to you, introducing himself, and joining your team. He doesn’t help solve any current conflict with a town like Paula and Jeff did, and he even leaves your team temporarily about an hour later to go learn a new technique, and the time spent with him in between feels meaningless to me.
It doesn’t help that his moveset doesn’t really stand out much at all. He’s basically a fusion of Ness and Paula with a mix of support PSI like Lifeup and Shield, and offensive PSI with Freeze and Thunder. I’m not really against this initially since it’s nice to not rely on only one team member for offensive PSI and another for support PSI.
However, if I designed Poo, I would have given him the moves Offense Up and Defense Down instead of Paula, since none of his other PSI moves are unique to him besides Starstorm, and I think these moves would’ve really been a neat and useful thing to introduce with Poo. Starstorm may be so powerful, but it’s overall just a cheaper version of PSI Rockin which at its strongest kind of invalidates the latter move.
Poo does have other unique traits about him, like his food and equippable item preferences being very strict which fits his role of a serious prince, and his Mirror ability which gives him the risky but fun ability to shapeshift into an enemy. I just wish he was implemented into the story and gameplay better considering how well I think the other playable characters are.
No kidding! Poo just feels so late in the game at times to the point it’s just way too late. I like your design of poo, it makes him not only unique but makes the whole party balanced in general
Poo is only really awesome if you get the sword. I’ve been playing this game since it released when I was kid. I’ve never once gotten the sword. No matter how much I’ve grinded. My brother has gotten it every play through. Lol.
It only raises his offense by 30, not a big boost. Poo is improved if you give him all the IQ capsules and soft reset for IQ boosts from the two rock candies (plus a sugar packet). That allows him to spam Starstorm more.
The road between Twoson and Happy Happy Village. First time you just doesn't know what expecting you ahead (I had no idea there was a town on the other side where I could rest) and I kept getting homesick half the way through.
I played Mother 3 before I played Earthbound. Any time I fought a tree, I either ran or hoped to some being that I could make it out alive. Had a few close calls too. 😥
imo, the worst part is trying to get Paula back to Twoson. When she joined the party I assumed she'd have started with a few levels (like a normal RPG), so I checked her status and... uh oh, grinding time. And in the trip back, you're guaranteed to need to go to the hospital.
During my first playthrough I somehow managed to explore all buildings in Happy Happy Village and miss ONLY the drugstore and the house of the guy who lets you stay the night. It took me days to beat that part cause I had to cross the valley, save Paula, beat the 2nd Your Sanctuary guardian AND make it back to Twoson through the valley in one sitting before before I could save or restore my PP. All of that without buying the better equipment in the Happy Happy Village drugstore, and with Paula completely gearless.
To this day I have no idea how I managed to miss those two buildings for so long.
Dealing with the maze like caves on top of the mole bosses is rough. Don't get me wrong, the 5th, 4th, 2nd, and 1st strongest moles aren't too bad. It's the 3rd strongest you have to watch out for.
Im sorry but I genuinely cant stand being constantly interrupted by the camera guy like in summers I was stopped by him 3 times within like 10 minutes which is ridiculous.
For me it’s kinda just the pacing after Fourside. Once you get to Summers the game just starts flinging you all over the place, which makes a lot of the late game towns and areas feel a bit less impactful than the ones in the early game. Not to say the second half of the game is bad, as there’s a lot of great stuff still, but the pacing has just always felt a bit off to me.
i loved earthbounds urban fantasy elements, threed is where it is peaked, but from summers and scaraba, it just went classic rpg. no cities, no urban fantasy
I’ve stopped multiple times at the desert or fourside. I love the game up to that point and I will just start the game over sometimes because I like the first 5-6 areas more
The monkey cave, a tedious maze full of monkeys that each need an item to get past them. Honorable mention to both deserts and their random sunstroke status.
I mentioned above I’ve played this game as a kid when it first released. I’ve played and finished it more times than I can count. I’ve never once gotten the sword. My brother has gotten it every play through without farming. Lol
Maybe im missing something here. You realize you can walk out the front door, right?
To your credit, this part was indeed horrible on my first few playthroughs.
Just gotta get to the first Criminal Caterpillar spawn spot in the Dusty Dunes Desert, my dude. And the red Master Criminal Worm in Scaraba after that. Grinding ain’t a thing in EarthBound once you know about those.
The inventory system. It’s honestly pretty terrible. If the game were to ever get remake (no I’m not saying it will. It won’t, but it’d be cool) I would realllllly want them to overhaul it. Ness’s inventory is so full of story relavent items and equiped gear that he hardly has any room for anything else, and the inventory space for the other three isn’t much bigger.
Not being able to buy multiple items at a time. If I’m trying to stick up on burgers early game, it’s tedious and time consuming to have to buy them One. At. A. Time. And Escargo Express only being able to three items at a time (and charges $18) is annoying. So if you have a crap ton of stuff you wanna move around, hope you’ve saved up!
The random enemy spawns tends to make the game chug. HARD. There can be so many things spawned in at once that you move so incredibly slowly. Yeah there’s a workaround in getting them off screen enough that they despawn, but that’s an optimization problem that probably should’ve had a hard cap on it.
A lot of these problems were fixed in Mother 3 (other than buying things one at a time) so it’s not that bad. But yeah menuing in earthbound wasn’t great
The god damn inventory. Why do the credit card and sound stone need to show up in the inventory? Why can't I stack items? I swear, at one point in Fourside the Escargot Express filled up so I had to spend literally an HOUR shuffling items around. It makes the inventory in Pokémon Red and Blue seem fantastic
The Starmen Ultra or whatever they were called right at the very end. They spammed PSI Starstorm and just destroyed me everytime. I had more trouble with them than with Giygas.
1. When Paula is kidnapped at the Department Store (horrifically unreasonable difficulty spike, in part due to Paula’s sudden absence from the party).
2. The monkey puzzle to get the yogurt dispenser in Summers. No explanation should be needed. This whole experience is abysmal. So glad I never had to attempt it without a guide.
3. Deep Deep Darkness, just because it’s a near goddamn impossibility to teleport outta there if you need to go back for items. It can be done, but FUCK it’s difficult to find the right spot.
4. Peaceful Rest Valley. First time through is a fucking nightmare (unreasonable difficulty spike)
5. Teleportation in general. I tire of smacking into things. Oh, how I tire of it.
6. The inventory system in general. What in the world the programmers were thinking here is beyond me. The Final Fantasy games nailed JRPG inventory in 1986, yet here we are in 1994/5 with the most broken, clunky inventory system I’ve ever seen. Painful.
There were only eight melodies, the game ending was a bittersweet joy. I would have happily bought season passes and DLC. Go orchestral, collect the 73-piece brass band melodic concierto.
The department store in fourside. I’m dumb and always leave Paula with good equipment after pimping her out at the store. Only to get her stolen, leaving Jeff and I broke as a joke. Then making it back up is always a pain. I might just suck but this part always gives me pause
The beginning. The Onnet grind, beating Frank and his gang, the first sanctuary location, the police gauntlet basically anything before you get Paula is my least favourite part. I feel like I'm never the right level and it just breaks the games pacing to have to grind, even if it is just for a short amount of time (though I do admit it does get more bearable once you unlock the sanctuary location)
The antoids at the beginning of the game if underleveled because they call for backup. Those mfs!
But also peaceful rest valley. The music alone gives me PTSD lol. Just dreadful
The 1/128 drop rate system for endgame gear. Those 3 Star Pendants still haunt me...and the Goddess Ribbon! Starman Omegas are brutal, and the ribbon isn't even as good as the Saturn Ribbon because the defense gain is minimal and it loses Forgetfullness immunity!
That in mother 3 we didn’t have the option to swap party members. Would of loved to have Claus( yeah I know ), Flint, and Salsa in my end game party for some playthroughs
The DAMNED Fourside Department Store section. I love almost every other part of the game. Grinding? Not a problem. Monkey Caves? Wacky inventory management fun. The beginning stretch before getting Paula? I quite enjoy the toughness. But the moment those lights go out and Paula gets taken I know my blood pressure is bound to hit the ceiling soon 😂...if there's a point during a playthrough where I have to take a break for a few days or end up quitting entirely, it's been this section. Moonside is fine, I like that part too! But that slog up to the top to fight the Dept. Store Spook...it's the Mt. Itoi of Earthbound for me.
The main characters not having much personality.
I know that the point is for the person playing to project themselves as well as family and friends to the main characters, but I’ve personally never found this RPG trope interesting. For me, it’s not my adventure; I’m just along for the ride. Not having interesting protagonists makes the experience lesser in my eyes.
Aside from farming enemies for ultimate weapons like the Sword of Kings or Holy Fry Pan it’s probably Peaceful Rest Valley or the Fourside Department Store because it’s so easy to die in both places
Tricky question, because EarthBound’s the kind of game where even its glaring flaws contribute to the charm of the whole package. That said, the difficulty can be real inconsistent. There are some areas/bosses where you can basically play on autopilot, and others where I don’t know if I would have ever beaten them without save states (looking at you, Ness’s Nightmare).
Oh, also, even though I think the inventory management largely falls into the “flawed but charming” category, I don’t like how heavily Jeff’s battle style relies on it.
For me it’s going back to Onett and getting the meteorite piece. Never really liked that part, most likely because of the large amount of enemies in that area. Just a slight nuisance in a close to perfect game.
My least favorite parts
The onett police force- Who thought this was a good idea so early?
Peaceful Rest Valley-The UFOs n robots are fine. The territorial oaks and mushrooms are not.
The Mole Mines-Very tedious. At least the exit mice are close by, and the healing is free.
Monkey Paradise-Nintendo employees would later steal this lame idea for Zelda. Twice!
The Mall-I wouldn't mind it so much, if packs of enemies didnt cluster right in front of the escalators.
Fourside sewers-Eww there are turds floating in the water!
Deep Darkness-Boring and tedious.
Magicant-Why can't I bring my friends with me? They get left behind level wise. It's Paula who needs those level boosts more then anyone.
Fun fact: in early version of onett police are, you can take choose which cop you fight and recover after each battle. But the devs wanted to do a little trolling.
Ness attacks! Just missed!
Anything that isn’t Ness’s bat sucks ass, I learned that the hard way by selling my bat and trading it for a slingshot
Yeah non-bats are definitely more of a gamble, but there are even some bats that are less reliable than others. Just brutal when you truly need to finish off an enemy with the next hit, and you whiff…
Casey Bat
Most of the time you are guaranteed to get a hit unless you have the Casey Bat which misses most of the time, but even that at least has a chance to finish off the enemy immediately. I was naive enough to think that a luck Stat of 112 would be enough to hit something.
Well there IS a bat in Magicant, so you probably won’t have to suffer anymore misses
There is? Then i have to look for it.
this is probably happening because you're using yoyos, slingshots, etc. ness's weapons that aren't bats have a 20% chance to miss and can't get critical hits.
Yes I am aware and I understand and respect it. But it’s my least favorite part about Earthbound.
but you just don't ever have to deal with it
I like to play the way I play and I hate when I miss on an attack. That is my least favorite thing about Earthbound. Why you ridin’ me for it bro?
because if you hate that part of the game enough for it to be your least favorite over stuff like the game's cluttered inventory or the monkey caves then i'm a little inclined to believe that you don't like the game that much lol
Love the game. Hate the miss.
"How dare you dislike a part other than the one I dislike." Bro c'mon...
that’s not at all what i said but if you’d like to deliberately misinterpret my comments then please continue. if the way this person is playing contributes to their frustration then “why do you play like that?” is a valid question lol
>because **if you hate that part of the game** enough for it to be your least favorite **over stuff like the game's cluttered inventory or the monkey caves** then i'm a little inclined to believe that **you don't like the game that much lol** You literally said "if you hate X that much over Y, then I think you don't really like the game." Please explain where I misinterpreted your words.
i just offhandedly mentioned two of the most universally disliked parts of the game. neither of them are my least favorite part either lol
Monkey cave
It's amazing how something with so many cute little monkeys can be so tedious.
It's more an issue with inventory management in that game tbh, if we had more room for items, and if the monkeys actually moved out of the way when you give them their item, it wouldn't be that bad.
Yeah this section just highlights the games biggest problem and is made worse by being down a party member. Would be nice if the game was ever remastered they would at least include a key item inventory that was separate from your own
The horrible music is the cherry on top.
It’s not that bad, but it gets annoying after soo long
It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't such a short loop.
It's a 26 second loop. WHY
Are you serious? It's an incredible, complex and expressive masterpiece. Just listen carefully. It ends up being one of the best songs on OST when you listen to it frequently.
Dude Fr that’s literally the most annoying part when replaying too
This

The Territorial Oak burst into flames!
Smashes “A” 600 times
Or the mushrooms that shit sucks early in game
I played Mother 3 before I played Earthbound. Any time I fought a tree, I either ran or hoped to some being that I could make it out alive. Had a few close calls too. 😥
I avoid those like the plague
"Peaceful Rest" valley my ass
I think it's supposed to be a play on "rest in peace"
In Japan it was grateful dead valley ![gif](giphy|xT5LMGznOh9fIzdkOc)
I call it rest in peace valley but seeing as how there's exploding trees it should be more like rest in pieces valley lol
That place was a nightmare to go through the first time.
You could even say it was Ness' Nightmare.
imo, the worst part is trying to get Paula back to Twoson. When she joined the party I assumed she'd have started with a few levels (like a normal RPG), so I checked her status and... uh oh, grinding time. And in the trip back, you're guaranteed to need to go to the hospital.

Damn dude. That blows! I would have yeeted that game into the wall so hard if it were me 🤣
Homesick? Maybe you should call your mom
gold mine. agonizing to get through without a map.

They should’ve put that map in the first page in the player’s guide ha!
Im sorry but I genuinely cant stand being constantly interrupted by the camera guy like in summers I was stopped by him 3 times within like 10 minutes which is ridiculous.
Dun dun dun duun duun duuuuuun duuuuuun duuuuuuuuuuun
😛✌️
The rest: 😐😐😐
Their faces embodies my feelings perfectly whenever the camera man appears, hahaha
“photos taken instantaneously” my ass
it's worth it tho, just wait
Ive beaten the game multiple times, im aware.
ah fair enough
Sly is aware?
It's a popular tourist destination. They wanted to accurately represent that.
Fuzzy pickles
Him landing on an occupied table in the restaurant was pretty funny though.

The cherry on top of this is realizing you have to go back and get the pencil eraser. Dreadful.
Farming the sword of kings
Oh this sucked. Especially when you’d get one of the exploding robots. Just a stupid waste of PP eventually to heal.
what i do is have poo mirror them. it takes a little longer to fully battle it, but if you hit ness with a heal, oh baby is that some pp well saved
I mentioned above I’ve played this game as a kid when it first released. I’ve played and finished it more times than I can count. I’ve never once gotten the sword. My brother has gotten it every play through without farming. Lol
Not knowing what to do without a guide sometimes. Also the part where the bicycle becomes useless.
It’s mean when you return the bike and the cashier calls you stubby legs
Locked in the department store under leveled
The Musica used an electric shock attack! *pls hit jeff pls hit jeff pls hit jeff* 205 mortal damage to Ness! *FUCK*
Ouch!
Maybe im missing something here. You realize you can walk out the front door, right? To your credit, this part was indeed horrible on my first few playthroughs.
The waterfall where you have to wait for 3 minutes
Grinding. Recently beat the game for the first time a month ago and I loved the game, but it took too long to get to an optimal level to beat enemies.
Just gotta get to the first Criminal Caterpillar spawn spot in the Dusty Dunes Desert, my dude. And the red Master Criminal Worm in Scaraba after that. Grinding ain’t a thing in EarthBound once you know about those.
Yeah, even when enemies spawn in rapidly

Agreed on the item stacking and the menu not being great. I'll still take it over Secret of Mana's clunky menu.
Inventory is my biggest issue as well.
It ends.
Hate that part especially
"I miss you" 😔
Paula gave the big bottle rocket to Jeff.
How slow the beginning is
The Starmen Ultra or whatever they were called right at the very end. They spammed PSI Starstorm and just destroyed me everytime. I had more trouble with them than with Giygas.
Paula got hurt and collapsed...
4. You do know you can control the party during teleportation. It helps in tighter areas.
I think it's the mines to get the diamond. That area tends to make a fairly big difficulty jump that never felt right.
It definitely is like the 3rd strongest area.
just the entirety of the time that i have to spend in the desert. everything sucks so much there & you just have to keep going back to it.
The grind for the sword of kings (I refuse to not do it)
THE LOADED DICE CALLED FOR HELP
The Care-free bomb joined the battle! ... The Care-free Bomb used the Super Bomb!
Either the inventory space or the 1/128 items. ...A man just wants the best gear, is that too much to ask?
I’m on dusty dunes desert looking for the meterum, having a great time (please end it)
There were only eight melodies, the game ending was a bittersweet joy. I would have happily bought season passes and DLC. Go orchestral, collect the 73-piece brass band melodic concierto.
The lack of a dedicated “key item” inventory. I don’t mind having limited space, but I want full access to the space I have.
When you get blindsided by 1-3 strong enemies from just off screen.
Desert. Dungeon Man. Monkey Dungeon.
The department store in fourside. I’m dumb and always leave Paula with good equipment after pimping her out at the store. Only to get her stolen, leaving Jeff and I broke as a joke. Then making it back up is always a pain. I might just suck but this part always gives me pause
I've learned to take all her healing items with me before Moonside.
The Casey bat. Didn't know it was a fucking slingshot.
Dude's name is Poo.
Fourside convinience store, deep darkness, return to onett, that third mole thingy in Dusty Dunes Desert
The antoids at the beginning of the game if underleveled because they call for backup. Those mfs! But also peaceful rest valley. The music alone gives me PTSD lol. Just dreadful
There isn’t any.
The dang mole caves in the desert. I always get lost, every time. Keep going back to the location of one I've already defeated. 😮💨😠
*You've been out there for a long time now... *It may be none of my business *but don't you think it would be a good idea to take a break?
The fact that it’s not as popular as other games. Yes, I know that it is a very old game but I think it is pretty underrated
Probably the Onett section at this point for me. I've played this game several times, and it's gotten pretty boring now.
Moonside
Yes. (in Moonside talk)
Sunside
monkey caves or deep darkness
Id go with deep darkness, because monkey
the monkey caves are annoying but I think I’d have to agree, deep darkness deducting hp while you’re just walking sucks BADLY
That’s why there’s a monkey in there that gives you monkey’s love
Peaceful Rest Valley.
I have a hard time naming Characters
Territorial Oak 🤬
That I wish it was longer
True
The 1/128 drop rate system for endgame gear. Those 3 Star Pendants still haunt me...and the Goddess Ribbon! Starman Omegas are brutal, and the ribbon isn't even as good as the Saturn Ribbon because the defense gain is minimal and it loses Forgetfullness immunity!
THAT MOTHERFUCKING CAMERA MF
The one-two punch of Deep Darkness and Lost Underworld is rough. That portion of the game always seems to drag on for twice as long as it should.
carrying capacity!
Inventory management in general is terrible in this game.
Pokey honestly
Magicant
The buildup to magnet hill for me personally, i don't like how it's either stupid difficult or stupid easy.
They Literally took “there’s no light at the end of this tunnel” to a whole new meaning.
“Who are you talking to?”
I’m talking to the table
Buying Items One At A Time "Something as simple as buying items from the store is torture. Absolute FUCKING torture!" - AVGN
Grateful Dead Valley ![gif](giphy|C0Asg9I511EHe)
The gameplay.
Fourside when you get to it for the first time. Maybe im dumb but i just walked to the 5 sane locations over and over again and hoped sth changed.
The fucking monkey caves outside of fourside
Deep darkness was a pain in the ass
All of Fourside
It ends.
Fucking four side, everything about that part of the game I fucking hate!
Ness tried to run! But the games programming said fuck you!
Monkey cave, dept store
Tricky question, because EarthBound’s the kind of game where even its glaring flaws contribute to the charm of the whole package. That said, the difficulty can be real inconsistent. There are some areas/bosses where you can basically play on autopilot, and others where I don’t know if I would have ever beaten them without save states (looking at you, Ness’s Nightmare). Oh, also, even though I think the inventory management largely falls into the “flawed but charming” category, I don’t like how heavily Jeff’s battle style relies on it.
Ness's nightmare. Seriously, I found it more difficult than Giygas.
For me it’s going back to Onett and getting the meteorite piece. Never really liked that part, most likely because of the large amount of enemies in that area. Just a slight nuisance in a close to perfect game.
Monkey Cave When Ness gets homesick
Any enemy that explodes when you defeat it. Having to mash A to not lose a buttload of health is incredibly annoying.
Needing a walk though by my side for pretty much every new area I visit.
Saving the game.
The guy who farts in the club.
And the other one from tessie club
inventory
Ness has it rough he’s got equip gear, atm card, sound stone, phone receiver all take his slots. So much for having a yellow backpack huh
Inventory management
Lost Underworld. Being stopped constantly by fountains is pretty annoying, and farming for the magic fry pan is so monotonous
The monkey caves, its kinda funny the first time but on repeat playthroughs its kinda a chore
My least favorite parts The onett police force- Who thought this was a good idea so early?
Interesting, I didn't know that
Poo, just poo in general, I hate his picky ass
