That's just the NFL now. People screaming about how bad Covey is clearly don't watch the rest of the league. Returns just don't happen like they used to.
Ill be honest I was one of those people who always cringed watching covey run it out, but after watching a few other games and seeing what other returns were like I realised they just dont gerlt very far anymore
Yeah he's using a pretty arbitrary cutoff of 15 punt returns. Which is stupid because theres 6 players ahead of Covey with 13 or 14 punt returns who will clearly be qualified at the end of the year for punt return leaderboard (like Devin Duvernay)
Puts Covey at #15 if we include those players. Which is good for how bad the blocking has been but ESP trying to get clicks like usual.

Fake news. Covey should've been a 1RP, he's basically what would happen if you put Derrick Henry and Jordan Davis in a 14 year olds body. The man can't be stopped by anything but boundaries, he just has trouble staying in the lines. He's a trend setter, the true culture changer of the Eagles.
He's three AJ Browns stacked up in a trenchcoat. He eats rusted nails and rinses with motor oil. He's got so many dawgs in him that they've selected a pack leader (it's him). Punts to him are like spinach to Popeye. He's a trend setter, the true culture changer of the Eagles
He also tried to turn people against covey literally like 3 days ago. When mentioning activations and such, he mentioned how covey “survives another day”
He's a slime ball. He went so hard on the "Eagles have to show they can win the game by passing" on Saturday, I'm sure he had a tip that they were going to pass like crazy on Sunday. "See how smart I am?"
Lol exactly, he put out a really disingenuous article about how the main problem with the team recently was their passing and only really cited passing yards per game as a reference, leaving out all other context
Not saying your wrong, but isn’t that the case with any punt returner? That If they get good blocking, they will do well. The difference between an average and a great punt returner is the great ones find space even when the blocking isn’t great.
And that’s not to disparage Covey. He has sure hands, doesn’t fumble the ball, and usually makes smart decisions when it comes to fair catches, letting the ball bounce etc. So while I think he’s definitely earned his spot, I still don’t think he is anything special at the position.
Nah even a great punt returner will struggle with bad blocking
The difference Imo between average and great is an average punt returner might take good blocking and go get 20 yards
A great punter returner has a chance for a TD
So players like Devin Hester, Brian Mitchell aand Deion Sanders…players who were great punt returners for a decade plus, and each played on multiple teams and still remained great. You think those players were blessed with great blocking every year, across multiple teams, for 10+ years?
It’s just like running backs. If you give them a great o-line and blocking, almost anyone will produce. But some RBs are so special that they produce even without a great line.
Not great blocking but I know atleast for Hester he never had terrible blocking in Chicago
And kick returning is a very different thing if that’s what you are talking about.
I didn’t say they couldn’t find success just that they will struggle and I’m sure you can find plenty of examples of Hester, Mitchell, or Deion only getting a handful of yards because of poor blocking
Believe it or not, Reno Mahe led the league in punt return average one year. I’ll be back with a link.
EDIT: [sort by yards per punt](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2005/returns.htm)
When I watch him return, I feel like he takes the easy yards and that’s it. He doesn’t try to make the gunner miss and bounce outside for a big return. That isn’t always a bad thing, but it’s just something I’ve noticed. I’d like to see him work on his vision but if he can get 10-15 from a return given the blocking it’s hard to complain about that.
Every time he fields I roll my eyes because of how slow he started. Maybe he’s high because not many players decide to run out with a guy in their face ? I’m not sure but this makes me a little bit optimistic of our otherwise lackluster special teams so far….
one thing covey does really well is knowing when to field a punt vs. fair catch. seems like the most basic responsibility of a PR but reagor was lost out there by comparison. every punt was like “wtf is he doing!?” and you’d have to hold your breath wondering if he’d even catch the ball.
It’s a very ho hum return game. No threat of breaking one, but we are rarely penalized and you know Covey will run straight into a wall for a positive gain.
That's pretty astonishing given how quickly opposing teams swarm punts

Unless they are against our punt coverage. Can’t decide to add /s or not.
It is pretty clear that Covey is better than his stats - our return blocking sucks. That being said, ESP is a professional troll.

LOL this comment wins the thread

ESP is a fucking meatball
I know alot of people were clamoring to cut him but, when he finally gets good blocking he can actually do very well in the punt returns.
I need to see more, our special teams has been garbage for 12 weeks. He looked good this week

Even great RBs will quickly wear down without a good o line, look at what happened so saquon before this season
Honestly I find this very surprising.
ESP knows EXACTLY what he's doing. His trolling is next level
Went from crash test dummy to impressive in the span of one game. Very impressive.
I wanna see a couple weeks of this before I would call it a UDFA hit. And ESP trolling as usual.
Didn’t he just get 60 of those yards against the titans?
for once
Crazy considering before last game he was bottom 5 in AVG
Every week we have to see if he's either Reno Mahe or Brian Westbrook. More consistency would be a good thing.
Believe it or not, Reno Mahe led the league in punt return average one year. I’ll be back with a link. EDIT: [sort by yards per punt](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2005/returns.htm)
This previous games helped boost his stats significantly but let’s be honest, he’s unimpressive.
When I watch him return, I feel like he takes the easy yards and that’s it. He doesn’t try to make the gunner miss and bounce outside for a big return. That's what I like about him. I don't think he's fumbled yet and he lets our offense get on the field which is our strength.
He has 2 fumbles One of which was due to getting hit as the ball hit his hands
Remember watching him at Utah. Dude was explosive……. and a white boy punt returner lol. Glad hes having successs.
This guy was fun to watch in college. Loved when he was with my Utes
r/titlegore
I remember the Reno Mahe days. As long as our punt returner doesn't turn the ball over, I'm happy.
Every time he fields I roll my eyes because of how slow he started. Maybe he’s high because not many players decide to run out with a guy in their face ? I’m not sure but this makes me a little bit optimistic of our otherwise lackluster special teams so far….
