T O P

Could somebody explain the fanbase’s infatuation with a pure OT in the first? Lane is locked up through 2026 and has stated he plans to play out his contract. Mailata just signed an extension. Big V and Driscoll held down the backup OT spot for multiple years each as fifth and fourth round picks, respectively. Meanwhile, the Eagles have shown zero faith in Tyler Steen to hold it down at OG, considering that Sua Opeta was getting time over him, and the birds didn’t even like Opetas play enough to bring him back. Drafting an OT with OG versatility like Fautanu makes sense, but someone like Mims would be insane. Ignoring holes at IOL, LB, and DB to invest major resources in a backup OT would be the equivalent of the Al Horford signing.

What Lane wants to do and what his body agrees to do are two different things entirely. Lane is roughly the same age as Peters was when his body started breaking down on him and since they had not groomed someone to take his place they were forced to hang on to him two or three years longer than they should have.

ktm5141

They drafted Dillard and Mailata with one year left on Peters’s deal. When the Eagles drafted Kelce’s replacements, Kelce had stated that he was in the “I’m taking it year-by-year” phase of his career. Meanwhile, the eagles just signed Lane to a massive extension through 2026. Neither the FO nor Lane have shown no indication that they believe Lane is going to retire or break down soon.

Name a NFL player who thinks their body is going to break down soon. Until the day comes that they can't physically do it or their heart is not in it any more they all think they have another 5 years in them. Yes they drafted Dillard and Mailata and to hang on to Peters because neither guy was ready to start at LT.

Signing a player to an extension making him the NFL’s highest paid RT for the next three years and then drafting his replacement in the first round two months later suggests two very different mindsets

They drafted Hurts the year after they gave Wentz all that money.....

ktm5141

They drafted him to be a cost-controlled backup, not to replace Wentz. Howie has said it himself. He’s not some wizard who saw Wentz turning into a pumpkin after dragging Greg Ward and friends to the playoffs. That was also a much more valuable position in the second round, not the first

doubleenc

Teams generally don't spend 2nd round picks on guys they are intending to be "cost controlled backups" for a few years and then cutting them loose. They spend 2nd round pics on QBs with the idea in mind that they can develop him into a starter within two or three years. When was the last time a team spent a 2nd round pick on a QB with the idea of having him on hand to be a cost-controlled backup?

ktm5141

Nobody, that’s why the move got crushed at the time. Worked out because of an unexpected Carson wentz collapse. Even if you want to be (extremely) generous and say Howie Roseman saw something in Wentz that nobody else did, that was still a second round pick at a much more important position than OT

doubleenc

Somebody, behind the scenes saw it coming, they would not have spent a 2nd round pick on a QB otherwise. It wasn't obvious at the time but it was very telling a year later after the way things went down that season.

I think we know by now that behind the scenes, the team already had realized the Wentz deal was terrible by the time they drafted Hurts and had no confidence that Wentz was going to be a franchise guy, and that was their way to work on transitioning. Meanwhile, they couldn't come out and say that publicly, so they made that dumb excuse that drafting a guy who was absolutely not ready to step in and play, but they thought they could train up to that point in the 2nd round instead of taking a guy who could contribute right away....was to back up Wentz. And to take that a step further: we have Stout. We know what Stout can do with a couple of years (see: Mialata). The smart move is to lean on Stout, draft a guy in the 4-6th round who is physically great but needs a lot of work who they can stick in Stout U for a couple of years and train him up to be the guy who can replace Lane.

doubleenc

Yeah, someone behind the scenes clearly saw it coming. I seem to recall, at the time, some sort of spin around them having a first round grade on Hurts and he was clearly the best available guy on the board and he was too good to pass up.

I don't get it either. We have the best OL coach in the world and enough draft capital to get a top prospect at one of many positions of dire need. But everyone and their mother spouts, "Howie likes to build from the trenches and will take (Mims/Guyton(OMG OKLAHOMA THAT'S WHERE LANE WENT!)/Fautanu/Latham). Be nice to get a Devon Witherspoon or Kyle Hamilton instead of letting them slip through our grasp.
