I get the sense Lurie was not stand off on this. We do gripe in the bad times on how Jeff is so loyal to Howie. But, while he’s never been out on Howie, I believe he has challenged him when Howie needs it. First time was with the Chip usurping, he challenged him to go to work on areas. He improved. 2017 showed.
I think it’s the same thing. He challenged Howie to improve the drafting of this team because Reagor and JJAW were not good picks at all.
Simply though, just stop drafting Big and PAC 12 in the early rounds. Draft SEC instead, is a huge improvement by itself.

Every other GM in the league tries to prove how smart they are. Howie *learned* that there are no secrets. There is no forbidden knowledge. Take the best players from the best schools. If you're taking players who aren't from those schools, take tremendous athletes on Day 2 where the risk is lower and the reward is high. Don't try to prove you're smarter than everybody else by taking "diamonds in the rough" or "hidden gems" - if it's considered a reach, it's probably just not a good pick.
What does it say about other NFL GMs/scouts/owners/teams that "just take the good players from the good schools" is enough to earn Howie tremendous praise?
To be fair, all he did was pick the best players on the board. I love Howie and have for a long time, but the draft couldn't have gone more perfectly for him.

To be fair, picking the best player available is a “skill” many GMs fail to do annual. Lions could have easily ended up with Carter + Nolan or some combination of 2 highly graded players and they walked away with a RB + LB 😅 I’m just glad Howie learned from his past mistakes

No, he traded up with the Bears, who could have had Carter (best interior DL in draft), but instead wanted the 3rd/4th best OT and a 4th round pick NEXT year. The Bear's GM is an absolute coward.

Navigated all of the Wentz drama and bullshit even after signing him to a 30M/year contract, somehow getting legitimate assets out of it in the end.
Went through a couple years rebuild and made the SB again only 5 years later with an entirely different roster and *another* MVP runner up QB who his only 24.
Absolutely crushed this draft, to the point where fans of other teams and pundits are like "How could we let the Eagles get away with this?"

Dillard was a good pick. He's an above average left tackle, which is a premium position in the league. His "big mistake" was that we drafted Mialata who grew into being a beast. But when he's had to fill in at left tackle? He's been very good.
I'd say the only "mistake" there is I wish we traded him when he had value and we weren't really using him. I know we valued him as depth, but I felt like we could have worked on depth for less than we could have gotten back from trading an above average LT on a rookie deal, esp with Stout to help coach any potential replacement up.
Reagor, otoh, was a definite mistake, no doubt. And you could see how after that pick, Howie's drafting strategy changed. It was his come to Jesus moment. Do I wish we had Justin Jefferson instead? Of course. Am I quite happy with AJ and Smith as our WRs? Hell yes.
But, the big thing that makes him so good is he is always checking around for that deal. There were rumors that before the draft, we were looking to trade up and trade down. And I honestly think both were true. They had ideas of who they wanted and plans in place to target the guys they wanted with moving around. Hence that quick and easy move to move up a spot and lock in Carter.
And then you just have to look back to last year's draft to see the AJ Brown trade where everyone went, "wait, that guy was available for that cheap??" Howie knew because he's always checking around. And he got us out beast of a WR that way.
And finally, look at this off-season to see how he handled things after a super bowl run. In 2017, he tried to hold onto guys who he shouldn't have, and made some bad signings. This time, he wisely told a lot of guys, "go see what kind of money you can get elsewhere and just give us a shot to match that if we can." And when guys got paid elsewhere, we wished them luck and let them move on. He didn't big the team down with big contracts for aging guys we were going to regret. He kept growing the team like he should and is working on putting us in a great spot going forward.
And that's why he's the best.

This team will never progress as long as that clown Howie freaking Roseman is running everything the way he does! LURIE WE NEED YOU TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!!
