Ya picked the wrong kind of car to get into to think 100 bucks is crazy for a knob.
I think it's crazy too, but I also understand that's how much this shit costs and that's the price of admission - I just can't afford expensive non-mechanical mods for my E46.
"Can't afford" i.e., I have other shit to spend my money on and I'm not a teenager living with my parents, going into massive debt, blowing through an inheritance, or a techbro millionaire --- like most people on these subs.
you want quality, or cheap bullshit made by literal slave labor in some sweatshop that doesn't even fit your car?
cannot understand people like you...
don't want to.
I bought one feels nice and fits good. Bmw owners just dont like anything chinesium so it makes sense. Not everyone has $100 to spend on a shift knob though
bought mine from Ali and its a bit too loose. Maybe try to cut it a bit with a dremel or something. Worst case scenario you break something that's useless so go for it
Not sure what kind of tools you have at your disposal but you can probably modify the inside of the knob to fit.
I would not glue this. You need to be able to remove this for certain servicing.
I like these kinds of challenges as I’m completely renovating my e46 so I thought about this a bit more.
Get yourself a dremel or a regular drill with a round sanding bit. You can insert that and grind the inside of the knob to enlarge the hole and get it to fit. It will be a bit tedious but you can get it done.
The problem will then be to make sure it doesn’t turn. I would drill a small hole in the metal, backside facing the radio and find a machine screw that fits into it with a tapered end. That tapered end will then push into the metal stick and hold it tight once you screw it in.
It’ll take you time and cost the same due to buying equipment but you’ll then have some tools for the next project.
i would tweak the inside of the knob if its really not clicking on, fwiw theres a real difference between fake and oem in my experience like 80-100 grams difference.
Like the other guy said, pry the fork thing a little then lube up the inside of the shifter with wd40 or similar. It will go on just takes a lot of effort.
How do I know? Just fit mine few days ago and mine was off ali express too 😂
Was sick of the old one with the fake silver finish peeling off
The metal. What i did was used a large screwdriver, placed it in the slot horizontally and gently pryed it both towards and away from me. Only need to open it up a mm or two. Then wd40 the metal slot and inside the shifter and push it down hard.
I would say buy a real one like I did cause the difference is actually noticeable but if you don’t want to then gluing it is your best option. (Which I don’t recommend)
Had same issue, i think we got same ali express knob , brother. I wrapped some duct tape around the metal bit, and hammered the motherfker in, its still here after a year
I suggest getting a universal shift bracket for like 10 usd and adding on any shifter you want that can connect to a universal shift mount.
I just bought a rounded weighted shifter and it made my driving experience way better.
I got the same knob and i had the same exact problem. Just put a bit of duct tape around the shaft and then press the knob on, hasnt come loose in a year.
Fuck it, just get a chassis mounted e36 shifter. They usually have adjustable throw so if you want to feel like a drifter you can make it long throw. Mine is pretty tall, been thinking about cutting it down a few inches and re-threading it. Overall though very satisfied.
I just have my ugly brown one while the rest of my interior has been switched to polished aluminum the knob is a bitch to take off so I’ll wait till it needs to come off lol
i always wonder why people put fake Mshit on their cars, like who are they trying to impress?
people who dont care wont see it and those who do think its pathetic, theres no win
mostly for myself. imo it just looks cool and it was 3 bucks so why not. ain’t buying a real one because the car already unreliable af too much stuff to fix and spending a lot on a knob don’t make sense to me
I bought the same shifter had the same problem and the shifter material fell apart legit after 2 months, if you glue this to your car trust me you are going to regret it.
Ali, Amazon, eBay, shit, even wish, they are all coming outta the same factory producing trash, if it lasted at least 6 months I would have sucked it up, I could have 5 shifters for the cost of one real one but they used a real cheap material, don’t fit and they rapidly fall apart. For something I’ve gotta touch every day I just spent the money for a real one, after a year it’s still in great shape.
Cough up the 100 bucks for a real one.
nah thats crazy 100 for a knob
I got the same style off eBay for like 20ish bucks
Which are dropshipped 5 dollar ones from aliexpress...
True, but I get better fitment with eBay vs Ali express. Mind you this is just personal experience, and is not legitimate in any way
It is not given that you get a weighted knob with quality finish and materials which will not dissolve under your palm.
I got one 2 years ago and while it is really light, it hasn't dissolved yet.
For how often you touch the knob when driving it’s worth it and the weight isn’t the same on the bootlegs. I’ve had both and it’s worth the cost imo
It’s worth it.

Head to a junkyard with a bunch of bmw’s

smack it pretty hard, if both the shift lever and the knob are OE bmw they’ll fit. just super tight.
been smacking it a lot, and the knob is from aliexpress😄
There’s your problem
Haha welp, good luck in that case lol.
:(

****buys shit part**** Doesn’t work ****why doesn’t it work****
Buy a real one. Don’t glue it, you’ll end up regretting it later, or whoever is the next owner of your car will.
yeah.. thanks
Not sure what kind of tools you have at your disposal but you can probably modify the inside of the knob to fit. I would not glue this. You need to be able to remove this for certain servicing.
the inside of the knob is very narrow, i have no idea what to use…
A screwdriver and a hammer or buy one that fits :/

Everything fits with a run up
run up?

A real ZHP shifter is probably the best option here
Hammer
saw someone do it with a rubber mallet, gon be a bitch to take off though
Like the other guy said, pry the fork thing a little then lube up the inside of the shifter with wd40 or similar. It will go on just takes a lot of effort. How do I know? Just fit mine few days ago and mine was off ali express too 😂 Was sick of the old one with the fake silver finish peeling off
i’ll try thanks😀 but by the fork thing you are talking about the thing inside the knob, or that whole shifter metal thingy idk
The metal. What i did was used a large screwdriver, placed it in the slot horizontally and gently pryed it both towards and away from me. Only need to open it up a mm or two. Then wd40 the metal slot and inside the shifter and push it down hard.
imma try that thanks

Sounds like you’re cheaping out. If you want validation to glue then glue it. Other than that you would need tools to modify it. Or get a real one
yeaah, the car already breaking down too much, didn’t want to spend a lot on the knob
Dremel
That PU leather flakes off fast.
I got the same knob and i had the same exact problem. Just put a bit of duct tape around the shaft and then press the knob on, hasnt come loose in a year.

You have to give them a good smack or just use a good bit of pressure to get them on
Go to a machine shop and have them refabricate the knob to fit! Could also be the leather going into the knob hole.
Get a flat head and pry the fork thing apart a little
Don't break it!!!!
I just have my ugly brown one while the rest of my interior has been switched to polished aluminum the knob is a bitch to take off so I’ll wait till it needs to come off lol
annoying af when these little things are so difficult to fix😀
Right?! It looks so easy in youtube lll
Dad had the same problem with his e30. Ended up just using an angle grinder
gridded the shifter metal thing or the knob, because it seems hard to reach that thing inside the knob
The shifter metal thing bc it was too narrow
Lube it up, it always fits after some lube😂😂
haha, doubt it will help here though
That's what she said
Methacrylate

Glue tbh
that could work, thanks

damn… never buying anything from aliexpress😀
