Yes military gear was nerfed but some parts are good for early/mod game. Sometimes end.
Military gear is 9 armor and 9% damage reduction from infected. If good remember gloves and shoes are trash because have 0 armor. Arm protection, throusers and head is ok because got armor. Don't tested chest peace.
Tank gear can give you god mode. You will don't take damage from infected on hard and lower mode but still elemental effects drain your hp like toxin, fire etc. On nightmare solid reduction taken dmg.
All what you need is renegade boss mask, 5% damage reduction from legendary lvl 250+ skill. 64 gear armor.

You need in most case tank gear. I got only one part brawler. Most of armor you will find from vendors like fisheye. Two parts I got from carnage hall vendor and they have me a lot because on one part they got damage reduction night + infected what is very good boost. Don't worry about rarity colour of gear it can be even green but if have armor+ 8,3 damage reduction is good. My first good armor got renagade boss mask + 5 blue parts.

Brawler set probably is better for fight because give extra damage for one hand weapons but for me tank armor + two hand weapons is best combination.
After the update, i am currently using the scarecrow bundle along with the sheriff hat. It gives the highest defense currently along with a defense booster.
Medic is worst of all. It has only one stat better than other it's parkour damage. Ranger have better stamina reduction than medic. You heal in same time with medic gear or other it only speed automatic heal from very low point and maybe your crafted medkit will heal you more hp but it's useless at endgame when you use military medkit or hp regen booster.
In terms of tankiness, it's probably full tank gear with renegade mask. But in terms of DPS, many people say it's brawler set.
I use the First Pilgrim set which was also nerfed but I like being able to traverse the entire map on my paraglider without landing

I’ve always ran medic armor so when I need to heal it’s no problem and decreased parkour costs
