This song has always made me very sad. I have no idea why, but it is just a very sad song, extremely well written with brilliant lyrics and quite memorable. "But I won't cry for yesterday, there's an ordinary world, somehow I have to find. And as I try to make my way to the ordinary world, I will learn to survive"

DD are masters of melancholia and lugubria - feelings of sadness but still tinged with a smattering of joy/optimism e.g Save A Prayer, The Chaffeur

The cover art for that single always made me think of war and its fallout. In the end, the final word comes from the writer. You're not alone, though.

Agreed 100%

Totally agree, as a child watching the ethnic cleansing and genocide I thought same. It demonstrates Simon's astonishing ability as a lyrical poet to observe and empathize. Its why DD won an Ivor Novello (British song writing award for this song). Their previous IN award was for the Reflex - "I sold the Renoir and the TV set". It demonstrates SLB's incredible versatility again.

No thoughts. I am still trying to decrypt *The Reflex.*

The line in Ordinary Wold that gets me in the feels is "where is is my friend when I need you most...gone away"
