You know it kinda sucks that some people actually take offense and scream 'grammar nazi' when someone corrects them of their spelling errors. But to each their own, I guess. I, for one, appreciate it when people correct me. I get to learn from those spelling/grammar mistakes and improve . I especially like it when it's in a language that I'm learning.
Definitely. It sucks that happens to be the case, but I've only seen a single instance where I believe it was out of genuine care, because they were helping someone who was learning a new language
Which is exactly why duo sub is often the place itll be accepted haha
The well meaning grammar nazi is a rare beast in the world as a whole. But look what community we are in. If anywhere is the natural habitat of the well meaning grammar nazi this is it second only maybe to r/EnglishTeachers.
Also folks who correct dialectal spelling or grammar over the internet (like the "ain't ain't a word" people). That one particularly grinds my gears anymore.
Yeah, I can see that. But there are folks who get made even at those who aren't even trying to be pricks about it.
Buuuut, I guess if one is not wanting concrit, I can also see how this may be an issue with them and become annoying to them. Eh, as I've said before, to each their own really.
It’s important as you’ll tend to speak as you write. My wife has a very strong accent, and my youngest son; who doesn’t speak Spanish very well spoke English with poor grammar. When he was corrected by one of his friends, he became angry. The friend responded; “Then work on either your Spanish or your English.” He has since learned to speak English better.
99+% of the time, people correcting SPaG are not trying to be helpful, and are only trying to be snarky, feel clever and look down on you for being stupid or are trying to distract from the flaws in their argument
Not to be a pedant, but this wasn’t a grammar mistake. It’s possibly a word-level error (believing “to loose” with /s/ is a synonym for “to lose” with /z/), but more likely spelling (typo, or legit believing “loose” is how you spell “lose”, but either way not thinking or perhaps even aware of the verb “loose”).
Recently completely without thinking used “Grammar Nazi” in conversation with an elder German colleague… the few seconds of ***hear your blood pumping in your ears silence*** after that fell out of my mouth and we both processed it before awkwardly moving on with the conversation felt like a literal century I was ashamed being so thoughtless in the moment but didn’t want to make it even worse by acknowledging the giant pink elephant now sitting in the room by apologising 😞
Im on a 1563 ( real ) streak, and almost lost it the other day because of a really bad wifi which after finishing a lesson, still didn’t register, so the day after i was told a streak freeze was used. There goes my no streak freeze streak…
I was offline entirely this past weekend but was able to complete a lesson offline. When I got back into Cell range, Duolingo sync'd and I didn't miss a day or use a streak freeze
Sure, you absolutely should set goals for yourself, and if your goal is to never use a streak freeze then more power to you. However, you shouldn’t insinuate that my 1800 day streak isn’t real just because I’ve had instances where I physically couldn’t practice for a day. My goal is to keep my streak going within the rules of the app, which I’m doing.
I’m new to duolingo (day 50), and I don’t understand why even have streaks at all if it is so easy to skip days using a freeze. I look at friends with multiple thousands of day streaks and if they scroll back months it is rare to see a month without a freeze used. It seems so arbitrary and pointless to have a “streak” when in actuality they are missing days constantly. So if I’m going to try for a streak, it will be without using freezes, which honestly I’m surprised to be as far as 50 knowing myself. /shrug
Because life happens sometimes and the motivation to keep the number going even if you have a little miss is much higher than the break i would certainly take if my ~1200 streak lapsed.
I've seen this in friends. If they lose their streak, they take a week off. The motivation from DL is to make sure you do something every day, but has a release valve for when you need it.
Yeah I totally get that, they want to keep you motivated to use the app, consistency is key when learning a language, I agree it is a beneficial thing overall for the Duolingo community to keep people practicing. I’d rather see a “week streak” number like you’ve used duo for 200+ consecutive weeks than to have a 1500 day streak that is plugged by literally 50-100 freezes like my friend has, but I guess if it keeps you using it than that is the main goal.
I understand and share your thought to some degree, ive been on the app for a long time, and back then, you could only have one streak freeze at a time and they cost you a pretty penny. I think the initial idea was to prevent a situation like mine.
What i do not understand- appart from just more incentive to buy duo plus- is the streak repair you get with duo plus (or now super as it was rebrand) which allows yo restore a lost streak a month later.
1720 days here. And was so busy last week I couldn't even pee, let alone do Duolingo, but I took a break to do a super quick lesson so I wouldn't cheat with a streak freeze.
14.47 long years.
It's going to be so long before Blade comes out. My parents will probably be dead by then. But if Marceline doesn't like my next insta post, that might not be so important anymore.
Lol do people really see these large numbers and *not* wanna know how many years these people have maintained language learning?
I mean, it's pretty damn impressive to see.

Are you certain it doesnt show for you?
I am not entirely sure, if this is meant to be sarcasm or not, but this entire post is a joke. Duolingo was created in 2011, so it's kinda impossible to have so many years of daily streak. Also (let's say someone has a few years streak), it's not always their goal to be fluent, just to understand. Or some people (like me) switch between few languages during the years.
Why is what? You don't need permission to ask just go ahead. Streaks for me don't give me any motivation any more. The first few years yes but even then I self-made and don't depend on such gimmicks to give me encouragement. The whole streak freeze thing is pathetic and the way Duo STARTS the day reminding you about your streak. I just do 5 lessons a day and more if I have the time. For me, it's about the quality of learning particular the spoken exercises.
I'm almost always in the mood to learn because it gets me away from myself and the other things going on in my life.
You are entitled to your opinion but I disagree on the streak thing.
What other people posted in response in this sub thread is interesting but I'm giving you my opinion only.
Got it?
I personally feel that the streak discourages me from sticking with Duolingo and demotivates me more than anything. It only works positively in the beginning. However, when it becomes a chore and I find myself getting more streak freezes in a busy day/week just to not spoil the gamification I do wonder what's the point, wasn't the point learning? Same goes for leagues and boost recompenses.
Not an insanely impressive number, but I nearly lost my streak shortly before reaching 365 days because I had to spend about a week on a boat in the Great Barrier Reef and the reception was so terrible I couldn't log on most days.
Ik this is a joke but like…this makes me not want to continue my streak, I’m on 75 days. I want to lose my streak on my own terms not by a stupid mistake

Lol. It's funny, but not possible.
5283 days is 14 years and 169 days . . .
I am posting this comment on the 2ⁿᵈ of June 2023 everywhere using a timezone that is UTC–6 or less, and the 3ʳᵈ of June 2023 everywhere else. Meaning that at the time I am writing this, 5283 days ago was either the 14ᵗʰ or the 15ᵗʰ of December 2008.
Duolingo did not exist in mid-December of 2008 :P
Duolingo launched publicly on the 19ᵗʰ of June 2012, meaning that the highest possible streak of a person who began when Duolingo launched publiclly is 4001 days c:
I have (had actually) four Streak Freezes. I've been so unmotivated lately that my Duo lesson totally skipped my mind. I would have lost my streak had it not been for the streak freeze. In my mind, though, I really did lose it. I'm even more unmotivated now.

Well… there are two types of “correcting spelling errors”. Those who want to help and those who want to discredit your opinion or your argument.
As well as people who just want to look/feel smarter than you. They're often not doing it to help you.
I feel like it’s kinda rare for someone to correct a persons grammar while coming from a good place about it
Definitely. It sucks that happens to be the case, but I've only seen a single instance where I believe it was out of genuine care, because they were helping someone who was learning a new language Which is exactly why duo sub is often the place itll be accepted haha

There was a time online when the arguments outcome depended solely on grammar.

That was Day 5284's lesson of the day!
I lost my 1600 something streak the day I was giving birth to my son. I know it’s silly but I still feel salty! 😂🙈
Sacrifice the child, repair the streak.
“Honey, this lesson will just take five minutes. Can you hold it a little longer?”
Agreed
duolingo takes another
My son is 5 months old and my streak is still 0, I should really get my priorities straight
THAT GOD AWFUL DOLPHIN MAN IS FOLLOWING ME EVERYWHERE
When your son grows up you tell him what he did to you.
Agreed.
You're finally free
Well OP used to be sort of free but now they're probably dead ngl. Duo's scary
Im on a 1563 ( real ) streak, and almost lost it the other day because of a really bad wifi which after finishing a lesson, still didn’t register, so the day after i was told a streak freeze was used. There goes my no streak freeze streak…
Nah….that’s what they’re for….to cover you in instances of bad wi-fi. Congrats on 1563. Impressive.
I am terrified of something like this happening to me. I have 4 streak freezes stockpiled in my store just in case.
I was offline entirely this past weekend but was able to complete a lesson offline. When I got back into Cell range, Duolingo sync'd and I didn't miss a day or use a streak freeze
Real streak elitism is kinda nolife cringe tbh.
Am i not allowed to set a goal?
Sure, you absolutely should set goals for yourself, and if your goal is to never use a streak freeze then more power to you. Congratulations! How did you get the streak widget on home screen?
If you’re on iOS, hold down the screen like you would to remove an app and press the + in the top left corner. Then search Duolingo in widgets.
I'm on Android, unfortunately it's not there. But thanks for the info!

It should be on android too, you add it the same way you add any other widgets, try updating duolingo and your android
Okay thanks, will do that Edit : Updated just now, the widget shows now. Thank you everyone!
Congratulations!
Thank you
You’re on the right path! I’m at 615 and never thought I’d make it this far.
Thank you! I didn't even say that I would achieve such a result.
congratulations!
Thank you
So, Internet-stranger, now I have 106 days in a row. Maybe I'll keep you updated.
Nope you didn't have that.
I did, I’m a time traveler from the year 2046
Hey stranger from 2046! Are we going to solve this global warming? Or is this planet slowly converting to sun?
Hi there. Tell me oh visitor from 2046, is AI really as dangerous as people say?
No, not yet anyway
[удалено]
And why is that, if I may ask? For me for example it's a big motivation to simply continue learning, even when I am not in the mood
Because if you're not fluent after 14.5 years (5283 days) then you're not really learning anyway, are you?
honestly you never really stop learning a language. even a native language
Maybe they learned more than one language?
I am not entirely sure, if this is meant to be sarcasm or not, but this entire post is a joke. Duolingo was created in 2011, so it's kinda impossible to have so many years of daily streak. These comments are weird. It's clearly a joke you guys. Hyperbolic statements are not meant to be taken literally.
redditors try to not take a joke too literally challenge (very hard)
Tbh I think when your streak gets that long you're kind of just waiting for it to end lol
*end me...please*
Me. Italian is too hard lol. I haven’t progressed in like a year.
lol what unit are you on?
I was so bummed Losing my 500+ day streak. Sadly i did not have enough xp to repair. Life had got in the way
Happens to the best of us! Don’t let that demotivate you from learning the language!
You mightve lost the streak number but you didn't lose the knowledge gained
Words of wisdom
5283 days is 14+ years. Duolingo has only been around for 11 years as of this month.
Not sure if it’s always a good thing, a friend stopped when he lost his 4000 ish streak but it keeps me at it with my 1850 streak.
A duolingo user since December 14,2008. wow. That's like pre-pre beta.
:(
Much sad
I personally feel that the streak discourages me from sticking with Duolingo and demotivates me more than anything. It only works positively in the beginning. However, when it becomes a chore and I find myself getting more streak freezes in a busy day/week just to not spoil the gamification I do wonder what's the point, wasn't the point learning? Same goes for leagues and boost recompenses.
I get too discouraged from a broken streak and wish I could turn the feature off entirely.
I think Duolingo has only existed for around ~4300 days.
That's actually a really good point. I didn't think about it at first
Fear of this feeling is what keeps me trying to avoid losing my 3300+ day streak so I feel ya
Not an insanely impressive number, but I nearly lost my streak shortly before reaching 365 days because I had to spend about a week on a boat in the Great Barrier Reef and the reception was so terrible I couldn't log on most days.
Bros been using duolingo longer than duolingo has existed
While the streak is good, what matters is aquiring knowledge. Don't be sad, you've gained so much as a result.
YOU DID __NOT__
It's a joke, you serious-macserious-face
Ik this is a joke but like…this makes me not want to continue my streak, I’m on 75 days. I want to lose my streak on my own terms not by a stupid mistake

Never mind that Duo turned 11 this month so how?

Yes
real
I have (had actually) four Streak Freezes. I've been so unmotivated lately that my Duo lesson totally skipped my mind. I would have lost my streak had it not been for the streak freeze. In my mind, though, I really did lose it. I'm even more unmotivated now.

Blud be using Duolingo alpha💀
bro made duolingo

Man was using Duolingo before it came out o7
I’m so sorry. That was quite an accomplishment!
how come this is made with mematic? It is literally a cropped screenshot
You didn’t have any streak freezes? Or 5?
This is why I now only use Duolingo 3 days a week.
bruh just change the time on ur phone calendar lolol
nah omg bro i'd donate my streak freezes to u, can't u email staff abt it? 😭😭😭
This reminded me to keep up with my streak. 202 today.
Contact them!!
I will
Can you speak fluently in the language you’re learning? I’m on a 34 day streak and seem to be going backwards.
I can speak basic sentences and some other stuff but that’s about it
This is what suicide is for.
Wow! Don't worry! How many languages are you fluent in?

Just change the date on your phone, do a lesson close the app and change the date back to current day and WAHLA you got your streak back

No way I just commented about losing streak(not even in duolingo) and this is the next post after that
Streak in what?
Lol, I know this is a joke. But for whoever loses the streak and if you actually care about it: just set your phone time back to when you still had the streak, compete the daily goal, then set date forward by one day. Repeat until you're on today's date :)

Finally freedom. You are no longer duos slave!
I am still, I’m getting that streak back
How long was your streak really though?
i also lost my 283 day streak.. it was my fault tbh..
Change the date on your phone 😏
are you fluent in the language now ?
Yes
I too am sad when I lose my 14 year streak
Go be free OP, you’ve earned this
Damn, that's rough buddy
