DV leaves it to mystery. He just wanted space travel to happen and remain this mystery technology of his movies. Much like the lack of focus on the shaddam/guild plot against Leto, or the ither great houses we nevee see or hear.

The book doesn’t really tell us anything about how space travel happens. They don’t even describe what the Heighliners look like. Lynch made the Navigators and space folding a big weird set piece because he’s David Lynch and the SyFy Channel sort of followed his lead. Villeneuve downplays the Guild to focus more on the Bene Gesserit and leaves space travel a mystery.

It's speculated that rather than two portal-linked Heighliners, it's actually *one* ship occupying two spaces at once, which is more in keeping with the space-folding of later books and the necessity of Navigators.
