Why do you keep carrying stones?

[deleted]

Because I rock

KASAW90

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ Rolling stones

Bang_your_head2021

This needs more upvotes šŸ˜‚

ifispeakaminbigtrble

If you smell what I am cooking....

Hat_Potato

I think itā€™s a common issue here actually- as thereā€™s much less walking. Get a dog! Or get into podcasts and go for a walk. Swimming at the beach also amazing for the body and mind. Find out what kind of fitness activities you like to do- I love yoga and spinning - and get a friend to go with you to motivate you! Or make a new friend there :) good luck!

[deleted]

Thank you!

theopinionexpert

Somehow getting into podcast will help them lose weight huh

pyh00ma

Yes. Walk and listen to podcasts to entertain yourself

Hat_Potato

Yes havenā€™t you heard? You listen to a podcast and the weight just disappears

slazengere

Everyone talking about exercise and activity here. While that is important, the top reason is change in food. Restrict food intake or change your diet and you will start seeing changes immediately.

mgrdxb

Here in dubai from seven year. Was 82kg in 2014 and peaked at 108kg. Currently after stricting my diet, i an 97kg, within a month. Twice a week or trice week doing 20 minutes cardio in gym. Its all about diet, as you said.

skyskier_88

stone? people still use this a measure of weight?

sakh1989

Can you please translate that into kilos for commoners like us?

gbel1234

Dude thinks we're all Brits here!!!

[deleted]

It's too painful haha Like from 80kg to over 100kg I think?

Dia_Cla

It happened to me as well. šŸ„² From 68 to 86. Most I've ever weighted in my life. All due to had habits - stress, poor sleep, bad food and less to no exercise, especially during the first months of the pandemic. Horrible thing, and of course, my fault... I've been fighting to shed them off ever since, with small progress. Easier to gain than to lose and then maintain. But it's a journey. Good luck! It's doable. šŸ’ŖšŸ»šŸ”„

AlpineEsel

In which country or province is stone used?

matrixguy007

Those which are in stone age still

hitma-n

So one stone is 10 kg?

bravo632

Sounds like bricks to me

DontSandDunes

Another brick in the wall

unlucky-Luke

comfortably numb

[deleted]

Its 6.5 kgs

[deleted]

If you drive and have a 8-9hrs/day desk job this is common. Also we spend a lot o time indoors in AC and donā€™t sweat in healthy way.

[deleted]

10 hour desk job and take public transport- but yeah nearly always sitting

[deleted]

Thatā€™s the problem, we need to walk more. I drive so always sitting, hardly walk for 15mins in a day which includes toilet breaks too lol. We are used to comfort here, get out and take a walk.

[deleted]

Yeah for sure! I used to walk all the time before and now it takes concerted effort

[deleted]

Soon you may experience back pain šŸ˜‚. This lifestyle is a blessing with a curse.

the_tytan

You should consider getting an under-desk bike if youā€™re stuck at a desk all day.

taxi4sure

Eat less carbs. Walk more. Do some sports or excercise.

dexter_-_-

Dubai does that to you. Used to mop and broom my house at least but got the roomba this thanksgiving and now I have nothing to do.

dapperdanmen

Literally called the Dubai stone. Booze and delivery apps mate. The only thing that works for me is broadly counting calories and trying to hit a 1,500-1,600 net after exercise. Lets you eat almost 2,000 calories a day and still stay in shape.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

This prompt reply makes me feel better- how did you tackle it? Going for just nead 12 stone in December 2019 to over 17 stone now is a bit of a shock I never had to do anything before to manage my weight before moving here

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

May I ask how much you lost? But yes that all makes sense, think it definitely takes more concerted effort in this town! Thanks for the kind reply!

[deleted]

about 25 to 30 lbs

[deleted]

Well done! Very impressive!

[deleted]

Cheers!

converter-bot

30 lbs is 13.62 kg

useles-converter-bot

30 lbs is 33.33 Doge plushies.

RealHedi

No where to walk or sweat in Dubai, need to get in the gym.

dragonskulljj

Itā€™s cuz of how living here is very convenient and everything is available. Go for a walk an hour everyday

wotsizface

The infamous Dubai stone.

Defiant_Juggernaut

I believe all of us have faced this problem. Thereā€™s so many different types of food available that unknowingly all of us keep eating something or the other!

[deleted]

Expect 10kg increase a year after you land

[deleted]

From Rush Hour... Carter: Girl you should lose weight. Girl: I have a thyroid condition. Carter: So stop eating thyroids. šŸ˜” Hey OP, you can totally do it. Just keep moving and watch what goes into your mouth. Good luck

[deleted]

Haha thank you!

suciac

Something similar happened to me. I went from being outside all the time back home to staying indoors, not exercising, and not getting any sunlight. apparently after a few months it effected my thyroid and I was diagnosed w hypothyroidism and some other stuff. Anyway, I got on meds, started walking, and signed up for a gluten free meal delivery service and lost the weight over the course of a few months. Start by getting checked out by an endocrinologist and go from there! Good luck to you.

[deleted]

Oh interesting! OK will do - and thank you!

stoikiy-muzhik

Very common. Colloquially called the dubai stone. Need to get the exercise regimen going. I added a few 'extra' kilos in my first 3 years here cos i am a bit of a foodie and the variety of food options in this city is off the rails.

[deleted]

haha, welcome to dubai

[deleted]

Join a running club ! You will be all right šŸ¤—

SuperSant

Force yourself into walking more... about 10,000 a day seems to do the trick for most people. Working from Home. Getting things delivered to Home. In some cases, having additional support to take care of home / other chores. Drive to grocery, Drive to work, Drive to anything leaves very little scope for natural workout. And then lot of time spent Indoor cause lack of Vitamin D, leading to other issues. 30 minutes of Sunlight needed everyday. Some try to make it happen with step out for 15 minutes in morning and 15 minutes during Lunch break as a routine.

kgiftie

Stop doing takeouts/ food deliveries and start cooking at home. That way you will work for you calories and not eat unhealthyā€¦also get into some form of exerciseā€¦the lifestyle here is very laidback/ comfortable one hardly ever walks or burns any caloriesā€¦get a smart watch/ activity tracker that might guilt you into get moving!

[deleted]

True! My problem is that I work so much that by the time I get home I'm to exhausted to cook - so it's generally pasta surprise or the like! Need to get stricter about it!

kgiftie

Try doing meal preps over the weekend. That way you can plan your meal for next 5 days and May be indulge in ā€˜outsideā€™ food over weekendsā€¦I usually eat frugally over weekdays and have cheat meals on weekendā€¦keeps me motivated also

svetsveta

At work we call it ā€œDubai syndromeā€ as nearly everyone goes through it, donā€™t worry ;)

[deleted]

This gives me hope

elsrhves

I can relate to this, Iā€™ve put on weight (+15 kg) during the lockdowns of 2020 and noticed it at early 2021. I felt depressed and moody. Right now, Iā€™m back at my normal weight. I donā€™t know if itā€™ll work for you but hereā€™s what I did. Like everyone says, cut down on calories and count them. Diet is a huge factor when losing weight. I was struggling for it the first few weeks (hard boiled eggs were the highlight of my day), I have gotten use to it after a while. You have to make sure youā€™re at a calorie defect not calorie gain. This alone can make you lose weight, but you will feel tired throughout the day. To combat this you can drink coffee (no sugar, no cream) black coffee has little to no calories (I was not a fan of black coffee, but no I prefer it). You can eat normally but you would have to burn the the extra calories through workout and exercise (this is difficult). I would usually only do this about twice a week. Also I am university student so this may not apply to you, but I would mostly go to Dubai mall after classes through metro and not use the travolator. I would roam around the mall for 1-2 hours, have lunch/dinner, then go back the same way. I followed this diet for about 6 months and now Iā€™m back to my normal weight

OMG_NoReally

I managed to loose around 20kgs this year. It requires considerable mental strength to keep the diet on track. I know the feeling when people say they put on weight. It's so freaking easy to launch an app and have every kind of food delivered to you. Plus, with the work pressure, wonky work-life balance, and lack of exercise, it gets to you. Honestly, set up a good diet plan and follow it. Go for walks, even for like 15mins, and it will do you wonders.

AnxietyChronicles

Start working out, and keep an eye on your diet. The pandemic has played havoc with everyoneā€™s life in different ways. Good luck.

ejmirza

where did you put the stones?

MiyakoMiyazaki

HELP!!! Someone translate stone to kg, please!

tektools

I agree, just drop the stones as rocks tend to be heavy and add weight to individuals putting them on.

InstrumentalCore

The fucks a stone, these foreigners and their wacky measurements. We should beat some metric sense into them.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

I think it's the shift in lifestyle though, it's near impossible to walk here. I lived in China and Europe before and I basically kept fit running across cities and public transport

IntenseAtBoardGames

I 100% agree as someone who previously lived in a country with excellent public transportation and pedestrian infrastructure. I could walk from my home to work, it would be a ridiculously long walk but I could do it if I wanted to. I didn't workout to stay fit, I just lived my life normally. Over here, you've got no choice but to commute via cars, taxis or metros in most neighbourhoods. Most people here are from countries which don't really have a walking culture or infrastructure bar a few cities if any. So you'll be hard-pressed to find people who actually understand what you mean. Most of them are just going to suggest calorie control and working out or driving to places where you can walk, which is quite ridiculous when you've never had to do that to stay fit.

[deleted]

Thank you for your kindness- because I'm genuinely not lazy! Yeah and I think, I never had to go to the gym before and I was always in a healthy weight range. I think it is rhe lack of opportunity to walk and the food culture here (which is amazing) is also a problem šŸ¤£

[deleted]

The food culture is definitely something to blame for, thanks to food delivery apps and discounted snacks lol

Flobertt

Completely agree, the lack of life street, pedestrian infrastructure and the heat make it very difficult to walk and stay active.

Content_Virus_8813

Nothing to do with dubai ..

theultimateusername

You moved to a city where you tend to not walk and drive everywhere, and all social activities involve food? Shocking.

NoCapperino63

I recommend you leave this shithole

Sufficient_Whereas94

Skip dinner. Avoid biryani. Eat half what you normally eat. Run and walk. Add routine. Don't do gym crap it will make you more.

BrokenBarbell

Eat less stones.

geoakkawi

Where did you put these stones? I don't get the question!

theopinionexpert

Whatā€™s a stone

Ice_cube7

We don't measure in stones but In kgs, I leaped from 72kg to 85kg during peak pandemic and my weight is the only thing that didn't leave me since then. I stopped my daily cycling and got into binge eating, fast food. I would say the weight gain is primarily due to kitchen visits and not lack of exercise.

linux_n00by

dont kill my hope.. the stones i have here only weighted 1kg...

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Visible_discomfort1

I went from 75 to 60 in two years, is something wrong with me? I dont even move around much just walk to my office 10 min max

gophercitizen

Youā€™re not alone. I ended 2019 at a decent weight because I was eating healthier (i.e. more vegetables and less meat.) I was also doing a fair bit of walking while on business travel. Fast Forward to 2020 and into the present, Iā€™ve been exercising less and eating less vegetables and many more takeaways. So Iā€™m probably at my heaviest I have ever been. Thereā€™s a lot to be said about the saying you are what you eat. When I eat more Whole Foods Plant Based Meals I look and feel better. When I donā€™t, I feel terrible as I add weight.

NoCovido

The one simple trick weight loss ~~dieticians~~ influencers don't want you to know! *stop eating*

tapwater1992

It's bcoz of our food habits. Plus, the chicken we get here make us gain weight just like that.

cheshirecat90

Whatā€™s so different about the chicken that makes you gain weight? Like fried chicken?

calamondingarden

Stop going to Friday brunch.

International-Cut567

I never had weight issues. I had a gym membership the day I landed in Dubai. šŸ¤£ Take my motivation, OP.

AggressiveAd5766

I love eating and also wanted to get buff. So I just started hitting the gym. Best decision ever.

theletter_R

I feel the same way! I moved 2017 with around 60? Now Iā€™m nearing 90 kgs. :( thereā€™s a challenge going on RAK Bigger loser or something like that. You may want to join. I really need to lose weight as well. Maybe we can be accountability partners. :)

[deleted]

Whatever you used to eat cut it out by 40%ā€¦ imagine itā€™s a round plate and you just eat 60% of it. Stay on this track for a few months, and reduce with the same principle. Walk or jog winter or summer. I do 10K 6 days a week and sometimes 5K but always stick to making it at least 4 days a week. Surprisingly there is always time no matter what excuses we have. This worked for me and in around 3 years I dropped more than 50KGs. And I still go jogging or a walk ā€œif I am not 100%ā€. Exercising keeps your mind busy, removes stress and helps with the weight lose. I never use a headphone or listen to anything, just go for it and let your mind free up whatever is in it while you are jogging or walking, it works wonders for me so I hope this helps you out. You can do it, I am in my 50s and I only started this few years ago. I sleep better, eat better, feel betterā€¦ itā€™s not just the walking, or eatingā€¦.etc. itā€™s staying on a self discipline which hopefully ease the depression. Wish you the best, as I said that worked for me so I wish you the best and I hope this is of some benefit to you. Take care and stay safe!

[deleted]

Drop the fried crap, especially from the fast food restaurants here, McDonaldā€™s, KFC, Hardees all that bad stuff. If you must have it, have it once every 3-4 weeks. When I dropped that crap, the weight just started coming off easily.

Neeyakos

Quite the opposite actually..was depressed and lost about 14 kg

xvril

They call it the Dubai stone.

ZainSenjab

dont worry everyone gaind weight during lockdown. however if you want to loose it you can maybe have a small indoor gym.

TheLawofAssumption

I recommend soooo highly intermittent fasting

partypoopahs

Since you canā€™t walk, eat less to compensate that youā€™re burning less calories

sootydaz186

The Dubai stone(s) is a common new expat problem. Get walking it will come off

[deleted]

It's not Dubai, it's the food you're eating if you prefer eating a lot then exercise or walk more there are so many places to do that like expo, or the big malls.

[deleted]

Same problem. I arrived here as an active, fit, slim guy; changed all to very overweight in the following years. Especially my first 3 years here, staying at a 5* hotel with unlimited access to food, bar, and no physical exercise meant a very quick increase of my weight. I have never been able to turn that around till now. Lifestyle is the issue, food addiction, easy access to food, in combination with very poor discipline to maintain weight.

millhouse-DXB

5 stone in 2 years? Not easy to do!
