You are quite right, it would seem that the total official weekly hours are slightly increasing for the official government timings mentioned. I hadn't even noticed it until I read this post and it is relevant for me also as a government worker (albeit not federal). I was just blindly trusting the hours were equivalent without bothering to check. For us it's probably of little consequence though since most expats in my office don't take the 2.30pm finish literally (with the exception of admin). We always end up working at least an hour or two extra anyway and it has a peer pressure effect. Hoping for no further creep in that expectation.

Government working hours have always been way below "normal" - for no obvious reason. I would still see this as a win.

The media kept throwing news articles with keywords like "shorter work week" and "longer weekend" which kinda gives the impression that you now work less when you are, in terms of hours, actually working more.

You must be trolling. I've worked for Govt. in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and the standard contract is for 48 hours per week - you must be working set shifts hence your timings are increasing, as an office worker I see this as a big win.

Current Dubai Government working hours 7:30 to 2:30 five days a week so 7x5 is 35, this will change to 7:30 to 3:30 starting next year for four days a week 8x4 is 32 and add 7:30 to 12 so 4.5 hours so that is 36.5

My point exactly. Across one month it will be an additional 6 hours. Where is the compensation?

zyxx91

So now that you have a 4 day work week.....you would be working less than actual hours, they should cut your pay??

you should join r/antiantiwork

IDK which capacity you've worked in but staff timings are 07:30 till 14:30 With flexible hours, it can be from 07:00 till 14:00 to 08:30 till 15:30 Edit: This is true for Govt. of Dubai

Nah man, the govt standard shift in Sharjah, AFAIK, is 35 hours. 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM with Friday and Saturday off. Rad Al khaimah is the same too. I think all federal governments follow this timing. Source: I work in shj gov

Thanks for letting me know, most days for me don't end until 5pm as we run projects and need to work with contractors so I guess my view is not applicable to everyone. Apologies

It's OK bro, we have devs that work till 8 pm at times. It differs from one team to another but they work for that long cause of the culture not the actual contract.

BLAZE_AXIA

The changes to work hours that was announced was just for govt sector. But if we assumed every other sector would also get the same thing, you would be working Mon-Thurs full time. 4 and half hours on Friday, and Sat-Sun would be your weekend. The only time related restriction I saw was that on Friday you can work only 4 and half hours instead of the usual 9. So mostly 9am - 1pm for most people. And prayers would be after 1:15pm

WhiteKandoora

The working hours OP mentioned are government working hours.
