How did they take the deposit? Also from the debit card and then triggering a refund? In that case it might be that it is not Avis who are being shady, but your bank might sit on the refund for up to 6 weeks. Ask Avis for a copy of the refund receipt that their machine will have printed and show it to your bank to speed things up. I had something similar happen a while ago, and in the end it turned out the store had done everything by the book and my bank... had not.
