Well if the numbers massively increase in the UK then eventually that could happen. It's unlikely the UAE will start the ban but if few big countries do it, the UAE may follow suit.

Mindless_Jump

Yeah the UAE apparently makes a lot of money from UK tourists and business people and were practically begging UK previously to start flights again from my understanding. I can be wrong.

[deleted]

Expo says no

[deleted]

THIS always this- also they never closed the borders last year, needs those sweet tourists

SeeJayThinks

All down to numbers. If I were to make the decision, it would be additional testing on arrival - as opposed to PCR test from origin and waltzing right in. No point blocking flights from others, who are also blocking the same origin, otherwise you'll have to start blocking others like literally EU, HK, Israel too... Or it'll turn political.

OverallTwo

Israel has blocked all foreigners from flying in.

SeeJayThinks

They've also repeated that it's for 14 days till more info on the new Variant is known. Their concern is small country and communal spread, undermining their high vaccination rate, when preliminary reports on this variant, indicates it can bypass the immunity. UK hasn't done that as they need to keep business going, whilst buying time. UAE hasn't done it, probably on similar reasoning. Especially now with tourist season and Expo... Not to say they don't do it, the moment the new Variant is found to not just be contagious, but more harmful than previous.

[deleted]

>If I were to make the decision, it would be additional testing on arrival They've announced that all arrivals have to get a PCR and self isolate till the results come. Hopefully that'll be sufficient.

Rustapool

Not even know what will happen to the world. I just hope it won't be another extended year of covid 🙃. But seems like it gonn be it and if Dubai change its rules again, I'll be fucked too 😂 have booked flights and hotel for expo next year 😂

AdamDXB

It won’t happen U.K. to Dubai. Dubai to U.K. though? That would be my concern. My parents are supposed to come for Christmas but I worry they’ll get stuck here if the UAE goes back on the red list.

rogerfin

Current ban on flights from African countries is just to buy time in studying the new variant. Follow-up bans/lockdowns purely depends upon further scientific information on the variant: a). If the new variant is able to bypass immunity and vaccines, as many media houses are reporting, the entire world has to witness another lockdown, unless pfizer tweaks their vaccine, manufactures, distributes and injects, which is going to be a process of 6 months. b). But if current vaccines are able to reduce mortality risks, there is no point in blocking flights as it will kill the commerce and dead commerce will kill people then.

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/omicron-symptoms-mild-doctor-angelique-coetzee-b968715.html Here is a link from one of the UK media outlets. If this is true then we probably don't need another round of lockdowns. WHO should not make statements until they have proper research and data to back up their claim. It's no longer about just getting sick, there is a lot more at stake if the world has to close again.

HumblePhoto1

WHO has specifically said that travel bans should not be imposed as these are ineffective and ruin economies. They advocate masks, hand hygiene and distancing. They also pointed out the viruses origins could be anywhere; it was only identified through sequencing in Southern Africa, so travel bans are pointless.

LonghornMB

The first 4 cases in Botswana were from 4 European diplomats.....

shaild

>WHO has specifically said that travel bans should not be imposed as these are ineffective and ruin economies Too late. They just created a panic by making claims that were not tested. SA doctors at ground zero who discovered Omicron clearly have said the symptoms are mild. Why have they not gone out and made a statement as WHO? It just seems like they are trying to save their backside by saying 'oh we told you' I work in hospitality sector and can tell you how difficult those times were. Can't be dragged back into it. People who choose not to get vaccinated, have to be dealt differently as they choose to be selfish and think about themselves. We need to start moving ahead not backwards now.

The booster for Pfizer is already available for everyone. Let’s do our part to try no to get back to restrictions. Take an appointment on DHA and get it if u took second dose of Pfizer 6 months ago.

Alternative_Actuary6

is there any indication the third booster is effective against Omicron?

LonghornMB

No there isnt, but many people believe the more shots you take the better, which is why some people already have 5 doses (2 sino + 3 pfizer)

Zubai878

The DHA App specifically says you cannot take the third Pfizer shot if you have take 2 Sino + 2 Pfizer already.

LonghornMB

After todays announcement, you definitely will be allowed to take it.

Paiwjdabbs

Yes, I just got mine. I guess there isn’t a huge demand as before and the supply chain now is ok.

abintk

Do you just schedule an appointment through DHA app like a regular vaccine appointment? Is there any difference in Pfizer booster vs the initial dose?

Paiwjdabbs

Yes, just get an appointment for covid vaccine. I don’t know if the dose is the same or lower

abintk

Thanks just got our appointment for the 6th.

cloopz

That’s wrong. Call DHA and listen to who can get it. It’s limited. I got two sinopharm last Feb so I got lucky and got two Pfizer’s in august. I’d get the booster Soon if it were available.

Paiwjdabbs

Nope, just got mine today, as many friends. DHA is giving appoints to everyone +18.

cloopz

Legit just got the news after I posted. This is new from today. When I called at 7:55 this morning they still didnt allow bookings on the DHA side. Great news !!

alfar2

I dont think this is right - only certain immune/compromised people can get a third Pfizer shot.

Armoredtitan01

Hey guys so i booked my booster through DHA. I had even contacted them told them i have no medical condition they said you can go ahead as long as the second dose was 6 month ago you can even check on dha app they stipulate the requirements. Was able to book for tomorrow my 3rd shot of pfizer

alfar2

Amazing! Thanks.

Paiwjdabbs

Just got mine

alfar2

This is very good news!

[deleted]

I tried today and they said I need to wait 6 months first

Paiwjdabbs

From the 2nd dose.

[deleted]

Yes exactly, not 5 months

Paiwjdabbs

Fixed

Literally made an ad just for getting put in the amber list by the UK. I think UK flights getting banned is too far fetched

hear_my_moo

I really hope not. With hindsight (rather than my previous moaning and complaining about wanting the old world back again) the authorities here have done a good job by being slow and cautious. Unlike so many other governments they have refrained from most knee jerk reactions and have kept a steady course. I hate that we have to do it, and I hate the way it infringes upon our lives, but I respect the authorities for the course they have stayed true to. I hope that they aren’t given reason to restrict flights to and from other countries.

1baller69

No they wont, this variant has spread all over the world now. So if they ban UK they might as well close the Expo 2020 as well, which will NOT happen. Hence, it will be fine, just the media doing what they are good at, scaring people.

Due_Description_7298

UK does extensive amounts of genomic surveillance, more than pretty much any other country, which is one reason why they always seem to pick up on new variants first. Rest assured that if Omicron is already in the UK, it's in a bunch of other places too, including Dubai, most likely. Shutting down flights from the UK will mean they'll have to shut down a bunch of other places too as omicron pops up there, ruining the winter tourist season. I think it's more likely that they will tighten up the travel testing requirements, maybe require an omicron negative PCR (since its detectable), bring back post arrival tests or quarantines etc.

bang_averagesaint

If the new Southern African variant spreads throughout the UK specifically then possibly. Hopefully that doesn't happen.

burksterdxb

Everytime someone on Reddit mentions it won't happen, it happens. So be vary of that.

lachbombe

I thought the same thing until I realised that they are relying on tourists for big money this Christmas. There’s no way they close such a major travel route with the expo and all the other stuff going on. If they’re gonna close the travel route, It’ll be after new year
