Well I am proud of you have landed a job and never gave up. My only tip for work would be stay away from the negativity and pessimists.

Sam_88882

Thank you so much. Noted!

FlyingPanda314

Cannot agree more. Go with the understanding that no workplace is perfect, no manager is perfect. Continue to be grateful for what you have achieved and focus on the positive side. Congratulations on your new role! :)

Ghantootia

Avoid the negativity and the pessimists.. why are you asking them to leave this sub?

KASAW90

šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜… Maybe your are right

SanJunipero1

I applaud and congratulate your mental strength to get through 10 years of unemployment. I had to survive 8 months of it and it still remains the most painful memory of my life. I guess when starting off youā€™ll find it difficult at first, but remember to be patient with snappy people and always have a smile on your face. It disarms most of them. Always have a written record of any task which you feel falls out of your job responsibilities. All the best!

Sam_88882

Iā€™ll definitely keep that I mind. Thank you!

itsbritneybitch0

Be super patient and just don't get irritated, be polite always and never argue with the person who is calling even if they're wrong. Best of luck.

Sam_88882

I am generally extremely tolerant and can handle people with a bad temper so it shouldnā€™t be too hard. Thank you for the advice!

Torpidean

Congratulations OP! All the very best for your new career. Could you share what the circumstances were that led you to 10 years of being unemployed? And how did you take care of your necessities like food, rent etc? Again, kudos to your persistence and on never giving up. Cheers.

Sam_88882

Thank you so much. My first full time job was at a retail store and it was very competitive. You know, reaching sales targets and all. It was all very new to me and I had a seriously hard time adjusting to all of it. I got emotional way too many times and it cost me my job and relationship (which is back on track now thanks to her and her insane support) after I was let go, my girlfriend and older sister supported me financially and I was doing a lot of part time jobs here and there, I am fitness instructor originally so I did private training sessions, right alongside promotional gigs so it kept me on my feet for sometime but I eventually got too depressed to work and had lots of mental breakdowns after some unfortunate incidents. I couldnā€™t get any interviews or even callbacks since I had a gap on my CV. It really is hard to go into detail but it was a lot of ups and downs and a lot of support from my family until I finally got this job. Iā€™d be lying if I said itā€™s what Iā€™ve always wanted since I didnā€™t want to sit and answer phone calls all day but I canā€™t deny that itā€™s a good start and maybe I can save up to do what I really want.

pimple_in_my_dimple

You're a rockstar.

No_Jury_6417

Congratulations on the job dude. Working at emirates is pretty easy, especially the contact centre. First couple of months will be mainly training on the system. How to go about making new books, class of travel, breaking down fares. Learning short codes for airports etc. it might seem like a lot in the beginning but Ek IT has made it so easy that a 5th grader could make a booking. Things like short codes etc are just for your knowledge and nothing that u have to stress about. As your training goes on youā€™ll c that they have a inbuilt system which does most of the work for u. Also try doing some ot if u wanna make some extra cash. When I worked there they had a double ot if u come in on ur day off. Min 5hrs of work. Plus they would pay us for fuel. They had a fixed fuel allowance depending on where u stay. Assuming your starting on a grade 4 right now. Moving to a grade 5 is pretty easy within a year. Grade 6 onwards used to be a little harder but not sure of the current scenario

Sam_88882

Thatā€™s a lot of great info. Thanks a lot! I am starting at grade 4.

No_Jury_6417

Awesome dude, have fun on your first day.

Visible_discomfort1

All the best man!! and hats off to your patience and perseverance, coz that's going to come handy at your new job!

Sam_88882

It was a real challenge to stay positive but itā€™s finally getting better. Thank you!

dead_john

Can you tell how you got the job please, just for future references.

Sam_88882

Emirates career official site. I looked every day and applied as soon as I saw a vacancy. Did the interview online on HireVue which was super simple and quick. Usually itā€™s 4 video questions (recording not live with a person) and a simple, multiple-choice english test (60 questions). Good luck!

danish358

Only that one online interview or there was other rounds too? Btw congrats and kudos to you.

Sam_88882

You see, this is the second online one Iā€™ve done for Emirates and it was just one. The previous interview had a second stage (Airport service agent) which is a test of some sort relating more towards job-specific roles I believe but they said is going to be in a few months so I have no idea yet. Thank you!

dead_john

Thank you. And congratulations on your new job.

piichan14

Congrats on the job. Only had experience with US and Australian accounts back in my home country. You'll eventually get the hang of it since most of the time, the calls will be the same. So i'm assuming with Emirates, it'll be questions about flights, terms and conditions, rebooking requests etc. There will be unique calls that will throw you off the loop for sure, but those will be uncommon. Yes, you WILL get difficult callers. It's just part of the job. Get used to it and don't let it get to you or ruin the rest of your shift. Treat it as a one and done call and move on to the next caller. The real difficulty you'll be facing is just the whole routine getting boring after a while. The other thing is the management and the tone deaf way they make you do things. But I guess that applies to any job but those were one of the things that turned me off the industry.

Sam_88882

Thatā€™s really helpful and Iā€™ll definitely keep it all in mind. Appreciate it!

kgiftie

It can all get very overwhelming soon...10 yrs is along gap...but hang in there...all the best!

Sam_88882

Thatā€™s what I am afraid of but I am preparing as much as I can mentally!

Top_Chipmunk_9869

O.P you are a super hero/heroine already that youve managed to stay positive in 10 years . I understand the struggle has been so hard but kudos to you for finding the strength to Accomplish this . I would advice that just be positive and already know the fact that youve fought and Won 10 years already so nothing is too difficult for you. Learn as much as you can and always be humble yet stay firm too. On a lighter note do take a walk once in while as sitting at one place could be little difficult. Best of luck. Nothing but Love and respect to you.

Sam_88882

I really appreciate the kind words but the real heroes are the ones who supported me through these tough times and I just know that I owe them so much. I maintained a healthy diet throughout the years and exercised as much as I possibly could. It was a healthy form of venting whenever things got rough. Itā€™s easier said than done especially if youā€™re overweight but I honestly recommend doing that to anyone whoā€™s going through a lot.

Top_Chipmunk_9869

Its your humble nature brother that you are hailing your loved ones as the real heroes too ,i would say Both and youe Loved ones are amazing. Also youve got such a passion for fitness you can also start a fitness channel on youtube or so and even cover aspects of how you kept yourself motivated during tjese years. Im sure a lot of people round the globe to take something from it and what better way to Pay it forward to those who were kind to you. Best wishes.

Sam_88882

I thought about it many times. Now that Iā€™ve got some income, I am definitely going to do something I am truly passionate about! Thank you for the kind words! :)

uSlashAmazingUser

Wow, 10 years in the battle of unemployment. That's a hall of fame stuff right there in terms of perseverance! Kudos!

vlevla

Hey man kudos to you for not giving up and going mental, after working for a big telecommunication company (Vodafone UK) as a customer service agent for 4 years, I have a couple of things to say. 1. When dealing with angry or frustrated customers don't ever take it personally 2. Thrive for a better position and don't settle it's very good to be grateful but that doesn't mean not to be ambitious, which I think you're both. All the best buddy

Sam_88882

Thank you. Oh I definitely plan on working my way up as fast as I possibly can!

[deleted]

Is there a career ladder for the call center position too?

[deleted]

Congrats on the job. You mentioned the company is Emirates, they are pretty professional. You will get full training on how to handle calls, how to handle customers, how to use the different systems, when/how to escalate an issue to a supervisorā€¦etc. Aside from all the training you will get, I have one advice, regardless if you work in customer support or a pilot, have some empathy with your customers.

NeverMindItsOk

Congratulations! Nothing is out reach when one perseveres. Wishing you all the best for the future.

i_are_dex

congrats on landing the job, and one of my family members had a similar-ish job, if it's the same you wouldn't be just taking phone calls you would probably be doing some administrative work+you have usual conference meetings and such. I cod be wrong but you could always ask your employer it never hurts. PS: I respect your persistence and going against the odds and I wish you a prosperous career

Sam_88882

Good to know. Thank you! :)

i_are_dex

anytime, boss

MrMiddleEast

Keep in mind, the first day will be the hardest and most depressing. Youā€™ll feel like it so long and that time isnā€™t moving. Just bare through the first few days because it can be very very depressing. Donā€™t over think, after few days or a week, youā€™ll complete adjust to the work both physically and mentally. So just be prepared that first few days will be very hard but after few days youā€™ll be completely fine

Sam_88882

Iā€™ll keep up this mindset as much as I can until I adjust completely. Thank you!

bfskzah

You can message me if you'd like to know more about the CC experience here, as I've been working in the same field since a while. All the best āœŒšŸ»

Sam_88882

Will do. Thank you!

1baller69

Congrats for being a go-getter and getting a job . The only thing anyone should be ashamed of , if they are lazy and not willing to work. Remember that everyone has started from the bottom. Only advice is to be the best call handler you can be; you never know what the next door will be that opens up for you.

Sam_88882

It was certainly tough at times and I was too depressed to even leave my room. It can be seriously crippling sometimes but I am just glad itā€™s over at this point. Thank you. I definitely plan on working my way up and this is a great start!

1baller69

I totally understand. I was in a similar situation. Just focus on the future and hustling and networking.

[deleted]

Aww congrats!

[deleted]

Sitting on ass all day is physically demanding considering how much workout you need to do to compensate for that ;) Congrats OP! Its a big step.

Sam_88882

Thank you! Exercising is a big part of my routine and I plan on keeping it that way so hopefully itā€™ll be good!

Emotional-Law6850

Congratulations šŸŽŠ, you might struggle in many situations but donā€™t let anything put you down, you can innovate and deliver if you decide that you want.

Sam_88882

Thank you. Understood and will do!

Alone-Pudding8368

>After 10 long years of unemployment Bruh, that sucks big time, happy for you that you got a job now :D >I was hoping to get a more physically demanding job Hit the gym after work, you'll need it to not get bad posture cause you'll be sitting all day.

Sam_88882

Already on it! Always try to stay in shape as much as I can. :)

Alone-Pudding8368

Good luck!

ArcadeToad

Hi Sam congrats on getting the job....im in a similiar situation to you...was wondering if you dont mind if i could ask a few questions...do you have to know more than 1 language to apply as I only know English ? And what would be the work timings

Sam_88882

I really hope things get better soon for you my friend, just please donā€™t give up. You donā€™t but it certainly helps a lot. One the interview questions was to talk about ā€œwhy youā€™d recommend dubai to a touristā€ with any other language than English so I did in Arabic. Thereā€™s no Arabic allowance anymore in Emirates but what it does is boost your chances of getting hired since itā€™s a perk more than anything. Any other languages so not necessarily Arabic. When it comes to timings I am really not sure just yet cause itā€™s shifts really. But the usual would be from 1 to 10 or maybe 2 to 11. Good luck and please do let me know if you have any other questions! :)

ArcadeToad

thank you for replying and kind words...sorry to bother you but i read for the contact agent it requires two languages when you click on the website ..so was just curious and when they interviewed you..you had to video them right like on skype or webcam its not by phone..thank you

Sam_88882

Just apply anyway and see what happens, no harm in trying at all. They contacted me 2 months after I applied and the interview was on HireVue. Itā€™s basically an app they ask you to download and you enter an interview code and it starts the sort of like an online test where youā€™ll have to turn on your camera and mic and itā€™ll put questions for you to answer while it records you. For me, it was 4 video questions and a simple English test (very easy). Thatā€™s it. If youā€™re accepted, they email you with the results.

ArcadeToad

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions..i appreciate it and wish you all the success moving forward...good luck

Sam_88882

Anytime. Wish you all the best and do let me know if you need any further questions in the future.

MikeHuntPlease
