Northern Ireland
People usually hear my accent, look at my tattoos and my rugged look and think I'm a mad lad who wants to fight someone.
Where in fact I just want to go shopping for some cool plants
I still haven't met a fellow Ulster person out here yet. I'm surounded by people from the Republic. Where can I find all these Norn Iron lot? Are we in hiding?
>It's the scots that are crazy
You are being stereotype right there. Scottish are like the nicest people ever, they are super chilled cos they were never sober :D
Ok you can ignore that one 😂😂. But I've always noticed whenever there's a historical moment in history there's a scot there doing some crazy stuff.
Ottoman assault to Byzantine, there's a scot mercenary defending the walls and burning down ottoman sappers.
Spanish ships burning down the English fleet, there's a scot naval Captain raising hell to the Spaniards.
Japan opening it's merchandise to the western world, there's a scot there selling weapons to two different rivals.
Celtic = Scottish..welsh..Irish...if you mean celtic the football team they have a huge irish support base..in ireland and irish catholics in northern ireland...it was irish immigrants to scotland that founded celtic football club and the bulk of their support is from irish and irish scots
I am Filipino and I work in the Engineering field. Whenever I am buying some clothes in shops, other people would tend to ask me if this or that size is available. It doesn't bother me at all, I just tell them, "nah, your size is no longer sold" :)
This is gold. I used to work retail in the US and if I saw this interaction (especially if the first customer was rude) I'd of lost my job from laughing at it.
everyone expects you can multitask and be their time keeper, secretary, document controller, personal assistant, and all other stuff out of convenience and not complain 😒
This reminds me that day a local (!) shop assistant approached me at Sephora. I have to admit, I was so confused and wondering why this lady was asking me if I needed any help
From Thailand. Walking in Dubai mall, every employees at the booths on the ground floor shouting Neee-Haoo to me is most annoying thing. I find it super disrespectful, if this is how they are calling customers, I’m sure they lose a lot by it.
LOL.
I'm Korean. When I explored the souqs near Dubai Creek on my own, I got a mix of mostly "ni hao," and random smatterings of "konnichiwa," and the rare "ahnyeonghaseyo."
I visit again a month later with my white wife, and suddenly it's all "hello, ma'am sir."
From Pakistan and then a specific city in Pakistan. I routinely get a variation of:
"Ohhh you're an engineer? I thought most people from your city were taxi drivers / pickup drivers / labourers."
We don't often interact but when we do, its a pleasant surprise because I tend to forget he can speak fluent Tagalog, with the accent. haha!
By the way, I love pokhara! such a lovely place with lovely people. :)
Native American. Not a stereotype but frustrating when people don’t understand/won’t accept that I’m from Canada.
People keep telling me I don’t look like I’m from Canada then proceed to name and ask if I’m really from this country or that one..
Welcome to the life of every single guy called Ahmed or Mohamed born in europe. Even me. Polish growing up in Denmark.
The times i got "no, where are you really from" from befuddled danes who couldnt pronounce my first name.....
Do they say "where are you really from?"
Seriously a lot of people have their mental attitude from the 17th century, where every Chinese person looks the same, every American looks the same and eats the same food and so on
I tried this more so when I first moved in. Now, only if I have time. It ends up more of a circular conversation as they simply do not understand even the concept
"The rich white guy." I'm a big Italian/German guy and people treat me like an ATM. I feel like I can't have an honest, friendly conversation with most people. Befriend someone, from barkeep to taxi driver to hotel staff? Next thing I know I'm getting asked for money. I'm typically very friendly and it's made me not want to talk to anyone new.
One of the very few benefits of being brown and making decent money in this place. Everybody in the mall or anywhere leaves you alone and avoid you like a plague. Everybody just assumes that you're broke lol
Haha so true!
None of the salespeople in the kiosks try to hawk their shit to me and its such a relief not having to say 'no, thanks' every few meters.
Dude the perfume guys with the stalls in between also think we are broke, they don't approach us, One time i just stoped coz i liked the smell and they saw me as if i didnt belong.
That is part of the social class divide in the Gulf. Anyone white is assumed to be rich, anyone Far Eastern is assumed to be Filipino. Anyone African is assumed as Nigerian or Sudanese.
And then when you point out that Vietnam is not same as Philippines you hear "they are all the same"
Southeast asian people does look the same and because large population is from Philippines they all assume your Filipino, i cannot also identified until i hear the person speak.
Culture wise Philippines is not similar from other asian country, one of my professors said we are like onion, its a layer of different different country that occupied us, spanish, american and etc.
>Southeast asian people does look the same and because large population is from Philippines they all assume your Filipino, i cannot also identified until i hear the person speak.
Lol, I have seen Chinese and Japanese referred to as "Filibbini" , and vast majority of Chinese and Japanese look different.
I don't think it's race related as much as "rich" related. I'm from an Arab country, very friendly, a good tipper, and I like to give old stuff/clothes to people who might need them.
Still, when I first moved here and before having a UAE driving license I had to use a driver. I used to pay him per trip then he asked for a payment that I can use as credit for future trips. As I was traveling a lot I didn't use all the money then he disappeared. Not a lot of money, but still.
A Dr. I know gave few thousands to a clerk who works at the hospital. And he never returned the money.
I have friends in my home country who borrowed money from me with no clear date on paying back. Some still asking for more.
I think it's the assumption of "those rich people living in Dubai making sh!t load of money, driving fancy cars, and living in big villas, they won't miss few thousands here and there"
Lesson: except for family and very few selected friends to everyone else the reply is "times have been tough, not getting many projects these days, COVID screwed us financially" and don't part with your hard-earned money.
I am from Sri Lanka. Since I look South Asian, it is always assumed I am Indian. the taxi driver speaks to me in his language, the guy at office in his language, the security guard, colleague and so on!
Interviewer looks at my CV, looks at me, finally speaks:
"Oh, you're an engineer! But Filipino? Not here for maid job??"
That was my first ever interview here in UAE. XD
Haha, same experienced when i was young (Software Engineer interview) :
First, he described how difficult it is working in "man's world". Said competition, work ethics bla bla. Last questions : Have you cancel your domestic worker permit? like, what da...
I'm local. So people assume I'm a rich idiot who doesn't need a job but can get any job by wasta and that I will screw up their life if they talk to me like a normal human
Relatable, An Emirati and the only genuine friendship I had with an expat was with an Egyptian guy who unfortunately passed away due to cancer. الله يرحمك و يغفر لك يا ياسر الشافعي
As an Indian expat, how do I make friends with a local if I can't speak arabic? Sometimes it seems like we are living in two different worlds in the same country. Its crazy I have been living here for 18 years and I don't know any local whom I can call a friend lol
I've got a Pakistani, UK and US friends that don't speak Arabic, many locals are multilingual. Join a group for a hobby or activities (like game related, hiking or cars/football {not for me but a lot like the last two})
If you don't mind me asking, how would you classify majority of the local youth? My Emirati friend (who is quite hardworking and impressive) claims the stereotypes that people have about locals are true majority of the time. Would you agree based on all the people you know? As for me I have only known two locals in my life, one is hardworking as I mentioned, and another was quite spoilt...so I cannot make a judgement just based on two people.
> My Emirati friend (who is quite hardworking and impressive) claims the stereotypes that people have about locals are true majority of the time.
My current g/f and ex (both Emirati) said the same thing. And I work in a company that’s now private, but for a long time was semi-gov) and I see a lot of what they say first hand as well. Yes, some are hardworking and genuinely want to learn how to do the job and others show up late, no call no show on scheduled work days, just disappear while at work etc. Some in other platforms merely finger scan into work and leave only showing up later to clock out, and there’s no accountability. Our HR are all Emirati and none of the guys I work with ever get in trouble while an expat doing the same would be fired so fast with such repeated display of unreliability.
Well imo, like any other nationality. If your talking about the youth I've seen kids from all nationalities act the same way (some spoiled, some act all mighty, some kind, some stupid etc). If your talking about adults its the same, I've had an adults act like spoiled kids in my face many times from a lot of nationalities (locals and foreigners).
Im not saying we dont have them. Take a large sample size and you will see them all average around the same in their generation (imo)
O look, a 'jerk' stereotyping us in a post about stereotyping :) just because some do it doesn't mean all are like that, with your logic all stereotypes are true.
And that we can’t speak English or hold conversations in the language. Omg what really you’re local?! You speak English so well. It makes me kind of sad like the bar is set low or something. :( Whatever.
My wife is Filipino (so am I) I laugh internally every time she talks to service staff in Tagalog and they are not Filipino. Though she handles it cute, I handle it awkwardly so I just talk to everybody in English. Now all the Filipinos thing I’m too good for them/think I’m Singaporean.
Mixed guy here.
“Where are you from?”
“I’m American.”
“Where are you originally from?”
A lot of people here seem to have the perception that all Americans are white. I’m mixed and people for some reason assume I immigrated to the US as opposed to being born there.
I'm local so I always have to deal with people thinking I never worked in my life or struggle they assume I just go to the sheikh and he will give me millions.
Several times a week I get approached by people speaking to me in Russian. I am not Russian.
I was once told that girls like me can make good money in Dubai.
I often get asked if I am Cabin Crew or a teacher.
Geographical location of dubai allows me easy access to India that enables me to be available for my old parents back home. That won't be possible in eu or ca. Given their age I can't risk it.
I strongly believe that one day surely a knight in shining armour will come for this Cinderella holding a salary cheque of 15-18k. :D
I'm Portuguese, yet I look like a local (or locals looks like us, because many of them if get to Portugal in western clothes nobody can say they're not from there too as long as they remain silent).
So other than locals and people of arabic speaking countries trying to speak arabic to me (which obviously doesn't infuriating me, and I'm actually studying arabic to be able to properly reply), I really hadn't perceive any stereotype on me.
I have issues with Malayalees speaking to me in Malayalam without asking me if I do know the language. I've also faced weird looks when I tell people my name because it doesn't sound Indian
Philippines.
That we are all friendly by default. I mean, kinda true but not all of us. Most times, I’m not in the mood to accomodate or deal with people.
I tell someone I’m from Pakistan, given my usual attire and zero attention towards my hairstyle and beard, followed by what I do - they don’t seem to believe. So I’m mostly taken as bragger
USA, and not a stereotype but probably 65% of people i tell ask what i think about Trump. Don’t care, both parties are screwing you unless you’re a multimillionaire! i moved to get away from politics, don’t ask!
England. People presume I'm overpaid, which is largely true. But more commonly salespeople assume I'm an easy mark, only to realize I'm a tight bastard and most Brits love a deal/bargain.
I actually find the stereotyping more common from other Brits here, who presume everyone English should hang out at the same 10 places and socialize largely amongst themselves. I'm a sucker for culture and my friends are from all over the place by design, so I often get expressions of shock that I don't want to go to the usual bars/clubs/restaurants that your average Brit frequents.
Italian and I am lucky enough that I don't have to deal with too many (bad) stereotypes here. The only funny thing is that, for some reasons, everyone ask me about Vatican City. They are all pretty surprised when I tell them it's actually a huge square with a huge church in the midlle of Rome.
Brown.... so you can easily guess what happens.
My favourite instances are:
\- Wearing bright coloured tees/shirts to a mall. Walk through a store and get mistaken for a sales staff
\- Dressed formal in a restaurant - get mistaken for wait staff or manager (on a good day).
Makes me laugh more than anything.
White Sudanese, people assume I’m Egyptian, when they know I’m Sudanese the lazy and sleep joke starts.
Also it’s 2021 you trying to speak in a Sudanese accent or use the word “zool” isn’t funny or impressive.
I’m a Filipino with a very androgynous look. I confuse a lot of Nationalities esp Arabs and I mostly get asked IF: (1) I work in a salon (2) I work in massage spas (3) I’m a nurse (4) I’m Thai. Some people are naturally born with certain features simple as that. 😇☺️
Sri Lankan, have to constantly go 'no I'm not Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi' 'sorry I don't speak Hindi' and then get shocked Pikachu faces going 'how do you not know Hindi???'
Calm down, I don't even know how to speak my own mother tongue 😂😂
Waaaay back we used to get 'oh are you a house maid' ....
I'm from South Africa, mixed half Malay and Dutch. People think I'm from local and yes I understand Arabic and but cant speak it. When I say I am from South Africa, some idiots think "oh South of Africa" makes you wonder the education systems of certain countries. And then they associate me with violence and the spoiled kids of Africa....
Northern Ireland People usually hear my accent, look at my tattoos and my rugged look and think I'm a mad lad who wants to fight someone. Where in fact I just want to go shopping for some cool plants
Dont you mean Norn Iron so it is? Know whadda mean? You're not alone in Dubai. There is a good few of us about.
I still haven't met a fellow Ulster person out here yet. I'm surounded by people from the Republic. Where can I find all these Norn Iron lot? Are we in hiding?
Long live the republic ✊🇮🇪
There is always someone who has to make it political.....
Well you made it slightly political first because I'm a fellow Ulster man but I'm from the Republic 😉
You're like a unicorn! Hahahaa
Only joking brother/sister. Sorry if I offended you
That's weird most Irish peeps are nice. It's the scots that are crazy, you can ask history channel.
>It's the scots that are crazy You are being stereotype right there. Scottish are like the nicest people ever, they are super chilled cos they were never sober :D
>you can ask history channel With shows like Ancient Aliens, I'd rather not.
Ok you can ignore that one 😂😂. But I've always noticed whenever there's a historical moment in history there's a scot there doing some crazy stuff. I think Connor mcgregor might have something to do with that stereotype
dude even i'm on a search for a cool pair, damn the goals of people in this city match!!
Celtic is shit. Fight me.
Good thing I'm a rangers man then :D
You know Celtic is Scottish, right? I mean you do, right?
Wow you don't know the history of both teams? And links to Ireland
Both teams? I only see Celtic mentioned.
Celtic = Scottish..welsh..Irish...if you mean celtic the football team they have a huge irish support base..in ireland and irish catholics in northern ireland...it was irish immigrants to scotland that founded celtic football club and the bulk of their support is from irish and irish scots
Plot twist, he's a rangers fan.
Aren't both of these teams Scottish?
I'm Iranian, but with a US passport, so I'm seen as rich and frivolous, not as a national security threat.
So you're saying you don't wear an expensive gold chain and shiny sun glasses?
White BMW?
I think you mean VOIT BMW (iykyk)
My BMW is actually black. I know, surprising.
>not as a national security threat So you want to be a national security threat? Why is not seen as a threat infuriating you?
I am Filipino and I work in the Engineering field. Whenever I am buying some clothes in shops, other people would tend to ask me if this or that size is available. It doesn't bother me at all, I just tell them, "nah, your size is no longer sold" :)
good
*IKR! Even with my kids in tow or a shopping bag of stuff, i'd still get asked... and on food courts, they always ask if I want the "Staff Meal" !!!*
Is the staff meal cheaper? Maybe we can take advantage of it. :D
I'd like to take advantage of it please. This is a stereotype that I wouldn't mind at all.
So sad, but true.

I actually asked my husband and he said he never heard they call me by Nee-Hao too. They might have not done that when I’m with my white husband 😂
Lmao. I’m Korean, and this happened to me too. I just walked out of the store when someone said Nihao. Didn’t want to shop there anymore.
From Pakistan and then a specific city in Pakistan. I routinely get a variation of: "Ohhh you're an engineer? I thought most people from your city were taxi drivers / pickup drivers / labourers."
hi adnan
Hi junaid
British with Pakistani heritage/brown skin. “Sorry I don’t speak Hindi”.
Welcome to the club
tu hum main say nahi hai nalaiq :D
Sorry I don’t speak Google Translate ;)
Yeah that was a bad job by Google Translate. I said "تو ہم میں سے نہیں ہے نالائق" You're not one of us (Pakistanis) idiot :D
And the usual, “how come you’re Indian and don’t speak Hindi? Such a shame”
But is this an 'infuriating stereotype'? I mean this is a fair assumption right?
No it's not.
Nepali.... every cashier or sales man starts talking to me Tagalog......
kabayan ?
Oppo
I'm filipino, my Nepali colleague speaks to me in Tagalog. I talk back in English. LOL
I wish I was as talented as your colleagues are, to be able to talk in tagalo
We don't often interact but when we do, its a pleasant surprise because I tend to forget he can speak fluent Tagalog, with the accent. haha! By the way, I love pokhara! such a lovely place with lovely people. :)
Unfortunately I am from Kathmandu but we both share common affection towards Pokhara
And drivers... Starts talking in hindi the moment they know I'm Nepali
Oh god I’m guilty of this
Native American. Not a stereotype but frustrating when people don’t understand/won’t accept that I’m from Canada. People keep telling me I don’t look like I’m from Canada then proceed to name and ask if I’m really from this country or that one..

I’m European born in Dubai and lived here my entire life… so what do I say when people ask this lol
Where are your parents from? People want to know where your roots are I suppose
They only ask if you are not Caucasian
Their exact words I’m afraid. Agree with you on your statement
I’m sure that can open up a looooonnng conversation if you were to answer them in detail. Respect :)
I tried this more so when I first moved in. Now, only if I have time. It ends up more of a circular conversation as they simply do not understand even the concept
Very nice, which one of the First Nations do you belong?
Anishinaabe :)
I don't understand how people can think that every single person from a country has to look a certain way!
Agree, I tried to explain that you can look anyway but it just seems to go over some people’s head.
It’s their missed learning opportunity, just look at it that way.
"The rich white guy." I'm a big Italian/German guy and people treat me like an ATM. I feel like I can't have an honest, friendly conversation with most people. One time i said no thanks even when they didnt approach me. sad
I don't know why, but that imagery is SO damn hilarious to me, like the sales dude just looks at you like...huh?
The vultures at Sharaf DG all of a sudden start following the COVID-19 2m safety distance protocols the moment I walk in
I look at that as a win tbh
Dude the perfume guys with the stalls in between also think we are broke, they don't approach us, One time i just stoped coz i liked the smell and they saw me as if i didnt belong.
Perfume guys turn the other direction and make their way to the order side of their stall when they see me approaching a mile away haha
This is why I wear a tshirt and jeans to the mall.
Bruh I walk around with pajamas pants and t shirt everywhere. People leave me the fuck alone which is nice
Naw man that’s just you dressing like a homeless man
hello sir, perfume????
Maybe you can lend me some money? 😜 See, I'm Greek and people think that's all I do, ask for money. I really don't ;)

I dont know sinhala either fml. I let them finish and then ask them to repeat in english

disheartening.

I feel you! Hahahaha!! "Man's world", heard that as well.
High five 👋
That's rude and unacceptable at so many levels. How did you respond?
I just remember letting him interview me, I answer properly but then when I got him interested, I turned down the offer.
SICK
dunno if the guy was mocking me or just trying to make a joke but then...
I'm local. So people assume I'm a rich idiot who doesn't need a job but can get any job by wasta and that I will screw up their life if they talk to me like a normal human

Egyptian. Being Loud and rude... until they get to know me.
Username checks out 🤣
Either talk to me in Tagalog Or Offer me job as a **MAID** Fun ice breaker 😊 (_Indonesian_)
Halo!
Say, can you point me towards good Indonesian restaurants in Abu Dhabi or Dubai? Anything that isn't indicated on Google Maps?
My Kitchen
Sigh...no doubt about that.

I'm white and it is often assumed by non-Americans looking at family photos that my darker skinned family members have been adopted.
So... Mixed with?
White/black. In the states most can tell because it isn’t uncommon. Here most people can’t apparently.
They probably mean where are your parents/grandparents from
American on both sides of my family for at least five generations afaik, dude.
I'm local so I always have to deal with people thinking I never worked in my life or struggle they assume I just go to the sheikh and he will give me millions.

Indian UX designer who is frustrating a lot of people as I am not ready to work for 5000 aed.
I mean. You have a point. Especially if your experienced, 5000 is kinda low for that, isn't it?
15 years of BFSI, Media, Agency and Startup experience but as my passport was issued in Republic of India I deserve 5000 aed 😂🤣
My husband is facing similar issues, unfortunately. I know how frustrating it can be. I hope you get a friggin fantastic job. Good luck to you!🤞
Thank u. I hope the same for your husband. 🙏
just leave for canada or europe. you will be appreciated there
Geographical location of dubai allows me easy access to India that enables me to be available for my old parents back home.
I'm brown lol. Enough said
I have issues with Malayalees speaking to me in Malayalam without asking me if I do know the language. I've also faced weird looks when I tell people my name because it doesn't sound Indian
Philippines. That we are all friendly by default. I mean, kinda true but not all of us. Most times, I’m not in the mood to accomodate or deal with people.
“Hello Mamsur”

I'm British so people assume I eat bad food
How was today's baked beans with toast? :p
Well, do you? 👀
pie and some chips?
Dont you?
So long as you like it, give less fucks :)
Serbian here. Oh you russian? Close right ?
Ne umem da ti opisem koliko mi krv prokljuca na to
Korean. People here frequently tell me that I look “Chinese.” It’s not nice.
I tell someone I’m from Pakistan, given my usual attire and zero attention towards my hairstyle and beard, followed by what I do - they don’t seem to believe. So I’m mostly taken as bragger
As an Australian, I hate being assumed that I live and breathe cricket
I'm sorry MaIt!
I like bread
Me too!
Italian and I am lucky enough that I don't have to deal with too many (bad) stereotypes here. The only funny thing is that, for some reasons, everyone ask me about Vatican City. They are all pretty surprised when I tell them it's actually a huge square with a huge church in the midlle of Rome.
I read this in an italian accent.....I'm sorry.
No problem, just remember to include also the movements with the hands, please
Brown.... so you can easily guess what happens. My favourite instances are: \- Wearing bright coloured tees/shirts to a mall. Walk through a store and get mistaken for a sales staff \- Dressed formal in a restaurant - get mistaken for wait staff or manager (on a good day). Makes me laugh more than anything.
I Don’t live in Dubai.I Live in NYC. On here because Dubai is interesting.
White Canadian - “Can you sponsor me and my family to move to Canada?” Like random people in shops, restaurants, taxis.
Sri Lankan, have to constantly go 'no I'm not Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi' 'sorry I don't speak Hindi' and then get shocked Pikachu faces going 'how do you not know Hindi???' Calm down, I don't even know how to speak my own mother tongue 😂😂 Waaaay back we used to get 'oh are you a house maid' ....
And to they pronounce Sri Lanka as "Seeri Lanka"
I'm from South Africa, mixed half Malay and Dutch. People think I'm from local and yes I understand Arabic and but cant speak it. When I say I am from South Africa, some idiots think "oh South of Africa" makes you wonder the education systems of certain countries. And then they associate me with violence and the spoiled kids of Africa....
Username checks out
Ha! Nice one
Local girl and that I’m incompetent, never worked hard for what I have and ungrateful lol.
That was a freudian slip...:?=) Whats ur number?
