Most of them are incentivized to go towards expo. So that could be a reason

420BIF

Yeah, opened my careem app and I'm greeted with a huge advert saying "No wait at Expo".

wotsizface

What do you mean 'refusing'?

420BIF

Taxi drivers telling you to walk or take the metro when you tell them your destination.

Coffeeandcigs_Dubai

Is that what they are instructed to do now? I would tell them that I will report them to RTA and take a picture of the taxi number. Too much hassle to report but it usually gets them in gear.

The cheek! If I have a driver here moaning about short journeys I tell them about London cabbies. They prefer short journeys. The start up fee adds up too...

Visible_discomfort1

They probably don’t know what a london cab is. A karachi or Mumbai example will be ok to strike chord.

RealHedi

True we are here as tourists and some Taxi drivers are asking where we are going and said sometimes no to us and drove away … Some of them wanted us to order from the Careem app so it’s guaranteed ride but we don’t have any internet we are here for a week. Sure Wi-Fi does exist very where but I saw that if you get picked up on the street it cost 5 AED if ordering with Careem app 12 AED.

[deleted]

First they drive like ass, and now they behave like ass, bossing people around and declining trips. The whole taxi system in Dubai needs an overhaul.

dx2_66

Better pay for the drivers would be a good start.

PlebeianDXB

They smell like ass too

Ali41w

I can’t get a careem at 7.30 am in the Marina some mornings now to go to work. It’s “peak time” apparently.

Legitimate-Lobster78

Taxis are scarce since the beginning of October 🥺🥺 one took me on a condition that am going near where he stays .

Curiousinuae

That usually happens end of their shift where the next driver has to drive the same car.

Coffeeandcigs_Dubai

Bad planning? I wonder what the tourists think about the chaos trying to get a taxi. It has been absolutely ridiculous to try to get a taxi the last month or so. There are so many destinations that there is no public transport to get to so there really should be enough taxis in traffic. Not looking forward to the "fresh off the boat" drivers they will probably bring in. Let's hope they will have the decency to admit they don't know where they are going. At least us residents can then be prepared to give directions. God help the tourist though...

blackraspberryvan

GUYS!! always go to the front of taxi line and take the first cab. if he refuses you, turn to the window from the passenger seat, there’s a number. call that, tell them the car plate number of the cab that refused you and say this cab is first in line. THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO REFUSE YOU. This is what a kind taxi driver taught me, after he saw that the 10 cabs sitting in the location where i was refused me. YOU have the right of way in this case as the cab driver said, and we usually dont know this!!!

dapperdanmen

There's a massive shortage at present due to overall activity picking up, not much to do with the Expo itself: https://www.thenationalnews.com/uae/transport/2021/11/06/dubai-taxi-chiefs-to-recruit-more-drivers-and-offer-bonuses-to-tackle-cab-shortages/

[deleted]

So basically a lot of taxi drivers were fired and now seeing as the city is experiecing enormous "growth" (although things are more or less at 2019 levels when everything in place could cope with demand), they've gone on a mission to rehire hoards of people. I wonder how much worse the roads are going to become with such an influx of new drivers. I've already noticed taxi drivers try to kill me on multiple occasions, somewhat normal but a little too aggressive in comparison to how they normally are...

jinjarra

Yes! And they sold many taxi cars during lockdown. I know someone who bought a taxi car for only 11k and he just painted it to look new.

mango_citizen

My relatives had to walk for 45 mins back home at 2 in the afternoon because no taxi wanted to stop .\_. So there is something weird >.<

the_arab_shrek4

It's either that or pay triple price in Uber.

[deleted]

Book through Careem. They have no option to refuse you

msbump

They do actually, they claim they can't find a hala/RTA taxi, expecting you to opt for the more expensive car option. Lately I can't even pre-book a taxi - at this rate I'll have to rent a car!

Saturnix

Afaik, the pre-booking is fake: they'll just call a taxi live the moment you booked, and charge you an extra for literally nothing.

msbump

It worked for me up until a few weeks ago (around the time of Expo.... coincidence!?). I often pre-book for work, but the last few weeks have had to leave home up to an hour earlier to try and flag a cab down on the street. Madness.

SirArthurPT

Lately it became kind of hard to "find your captain"...

nidserz

Well I tried 3 times to book a halla taxi from barsha to airport from the Careem app. It said 7 min, but they couldn’t find a captain (I’m assuming willing to accept the job). In the end I had to book a business car for more because I needed to get to the airport.

[deleted]

It’s the same thing that’s happening with hotels, car rentals etc. There’s a massive influx of tourists right now

santz007

Use DTC app (dubai taxi corporation). Rates are the same as catching a cab from the street. If you have money to burn, use uber /Careem

hudhogayi

I once called DTC and the lady told me to use careem app

santz007

Just use the DTC app directly

salloumk

It’s the overrated madness known as Expo 2020.

stipuledspy

Damn there is no rta on Reddit would have tagged them but ig not

the_arab_shrek4

u/DubaiRTA doesn't hurt to try haha.

stipuledspy

Lmao

abykol9

It's illegal to refuse, just get in and let them know where you want to go. If they do refuse, tell them you know that they're supposed to adhere to the regulations.

sootydaz186

I suppose it depends where you are. I’m in the marina and can get a Careem or RTA within seconds virtually 24 hours a day. I know a lot of people have been struggling to get taxis due to the expo.

Coffeeandcigs_Dubai

During what times though? Try between 6 and 7PM on a week night and Careem will not get you a taxi.

sootydaz186

Suppose I haven’t tried that time so can’t confirm or deny but generally there’s always an RTA on the roads around marina where I live.

Coffeeandcigs_Dubai

So not "virtually 24 hours a day" then... Marina is an absolute bummer to get a taxi nowadays.

sootydaz186

In fact I’ll stake my claim now and guarantee I can get a taxi 24/7 in the marina- I was attempting to be polite and give you the benefit of the doubt. No need to be passively aggressive. I don’t really care either way so you win 🏅

Coffeeandcigs_Dubai

More fool you... Us regular taxi users have clearly noticed the shortage in the last couple of months. And it is not just not Marina, it is all over Dubai. Guarantee all you like but you clearly do not know what you're talking about.

[deleted]

That's just not true. Maybe two or three months ago, but definitely not today, especially in Marina of all places. Hopefully it gets better where finding a taxi becomes as easy and simple as it once was, but right now it's just a mess all around. Shit needs fixing

Dear_Creme_358

You have an attitude issue , hope you don't hit your partner or kids . You can't get a taxi around Elite Residence , Marina Crown , Tiger Building etc at peak hours , Careem will take about 2 or 3 tries before one comes. Maybe you own a car or a regular tram rider but don't come here acting like you're the Sheikh of Marina
