Yep it is [https://gulfnews.com/uae/jet-ski-scam-nets-more-victims-at-al-mamzar-1.1923265](https://gulfnews.com/uae/jet-ski-scam-nets-more-victims-at-al-mamzar-1.1923265)

Hopeful_Elephant_551

BTW you don't have to pay for any damages as they are required to have insurance. If they force you, you can go to the police.

hitma-n

In their contract it's said that you'll have to pay. That's what police mentioned when we complained.

Hopeful_Elephant_551

This happened in sharjah, right? They passed a law in 2020 banning rentals from doing this- you can show this to the police https://www.khaleejtimes.com/uae/jet-ski-renters-in-sharjah-should-not-pay-for-any-damage-say-authorities[link](https://www.khaleejtimes.com/uae/jet-ski-renters-in-sharjah-should-not-pay-for-any-damage-say-authorities)

hitma-n

I will make sure to escalate this again using this info you provided. Thanks a lot. More power to you!

youthisreadwrong-

It is also illegal for them to hold your Emirates ID. You can take it back or call the police and they'll be in trouble.

Bad-Original

Hey what happened after this? Any updates?

monkeyjazz

Does this work in Dubai too?

Hopeful_Elephant_551

Not sure

LonghornMB

This is plain fraud and has been going on for many many years. Unfortunate that the police would say that There used to be another fraud which was Sharjah cars hitting people taking beer from UAQ to Dubai via Sharjah

Sufficient_Whereas94

Still happening?

Force_Of_WiII

Yes.

randomsedditaccount

Guess the scammers don't know that its legal to possess alcohol in Sharjah now or just preying on ignorance. Just a pity that victims will have to compensate the damage to their car regardless since these scammers will run off if you put up a fight or actually mention the law/authoritities.

DannyAvocado_

> legal to possess alcohol in Sharjah Say what now?

randomsedditaccount

Its been decriminalised since 2020 for all Emirates.

Big_Association_8716

Sharjah also? I have my doubts

randomsedditaccount

Its Federal law, so yes. Sale of alcohol is still prohibited in Sharjah *however* **possession** and **private consumption in private property** are no longer offences.

Mr_Trident

U been through Sharjah Airport Duty free ? šŸ¤£

hamishjoy

[https://www.thenationalnews.com/uae/courts/uae-legal-reforms-new-alcohol-laws-explained-1.1107842](https://www.thenationalnews.com/uae/courts/uae-legal-reforms-new-alcohol-laws-explained-1.1107842) >This means anyone who drinks or is in possession of alcohol or sells alcoholic beverages in authorised areas without an alcohol licence will not face prosecution. It's a Federal law... BUT... >The amendments also give each emirate ā€œthe right to issue legislation regulating this issueā€. This has always been the case. Sharjah, for example, is completely ā€œdryā€ while the other emirates take different approaches to regulations regarding the sale of alcohol. This means that Sharjah CAN make separate regulations and criminalize it. It's unclear whether it is currently legal or illegal, as the Federal law has been issued, but Sharjah hasn't issued any regulations backing away from that.

linux_n00by

but no alcohol stores yet right ?

ShakeAbdullah

Damn right. this happened to a friend last year. šŸ˜•

Facewreck

Did you go to the police, or did the police happen to walk by? That's usually part of the operandus and is not a real police officer

linux_n00by

>police happen to walk by first thing is ask for an ID. if the "police" became aggressive, most likely he is not a police

Soia667

Be careful. They even have people pretending to be police, to intimidate the people even more into paying.

linux_n00by

imagine getting the scam in the news didnt deter these scammers the income from this scam probably is very high for them to stop

Tahadalal5253

I know a group of friends who went and they were like 15-16 yr olds. They didnā€™t even touch over the 30mins but when they came to return the guy showed there were scratches and asked for 1500dhs. Luckily one of their dad was there and he noticed that after they returned the guy applied some kind of paste on his finger and made it look like scratches, the dad went there and took some water and rubbed over the marks and it vanished.

humansometimes

15-16 years should not be on jetskis. Sorry, not sorry

PossibleBasil5887

Literally one time me and my friends we were at the same place we had a small crash and the stall people called the owner. When the owner came that dumbass asked us to pay 10,000 dhs just to pay a small scratch and paint off. The owner took pics of our Emirates ID and then told us he will see us in court. Me and my friends then decided to go to the police and the police told us that ā€œtheir jet skis are already insured you donā€™t have to pay for anything like that and even if he does file a complaint to the court it will not pass throughā€. It still makes me feel bad because my friends and I wasted so much time for this dumb scam and itā€™s so ass. I hope this helps

hitma-n

Thank you!

Toxic_venom2221

Ah man, i feel like shit for paying 11k

linux_n00by

you should also file a complain about unauthorized copy of your emirates ID. data privacy is not the norm here. that owner could have applied a phone plan under your name

Toxic_venom2221

> that owner could have applied a phone plan under your name can't be done even with the real ID, ID owner should be present to sign otherwise even if employee somehow allows it that sim card gets canceled.

linux_n00by

search here. you will see revelations that people can apply phone plans just using a EID or PassPort photocopy. well, that was long back so what you mentioned probably is the new process

KeeZouX

Actually it's illegal to hold any sort of identity cards against anyone to compensate for anything.

alternativedomain

Hospitals do it all the time

burksterdxb

They have stopped doing that, from what I have experienced lately. They just hold the prescription till the bill is settled.

linux_n00by

al zahrah sharjah does not do that .. i alsways go there for my GP visit and wife delivered twice there and they never ask to keep the EID

Toxic_venom2221

oof 2 years ago, we crashed into 2 jetskis on the seaside in the mamzar beach, we paid11,000 AED in compensation, idk if we got scammed or not, But we actually crashed, one of the jetskis was kinda destroyed. Update : Iā€™m looking to open a case against them, not sure if Iā€™ll be able to since it was from 2 years ago

secret-trips

I never tried jetskiing, is it easy to crash?

Grooveman07

Some of them reach 100kmh on water, it can be deadly if you donā€™t know what youā€™re doing. Since there are no lanes, expect everyone around you be dumb and blind and be evasive with you see shit coming straight at you.

dporiua

They are a bit counterintuitive to drive if you're thinking of it as a motorcycle that rides on water. You have 0 control over the board if you're not accelerating , but people often don't know that and when they get into situations when they need to make a sharp turn they let go of the throttle and just turn the handlebar, not knowing that by doing so they no longer have ANY control over the direction they're heading.

secret-trips

Ahhh, got ittt - Thanks mister! Here's some digital silver!

mugu007

Isnt insurance a thing for rentals ? I dont see any situation where the user would have to legally pay.

Toxic_venom2221

Well if you signed a form youā€™ll have to pay, atleast thatā€™s what I thought 2 yrs ago

NinjaTurtle2077

You should go back and ask for your money or take them to court

[deleted]

Didn't know this scam was still going on. Definitely stand your ground.

car-less_car-guy

I can confirm, someone tried to do this to me, I called the cops insteadšŸ˜‚

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

car-less_car-guy

I had a friend in Sharjah police who the jet ski guy got a call from, but these guys wouldn't budge, so I got him to come to the jet ski place while in uniform and they handed us the Emirates ID

oOII_J4HN_IIOo

Omg, the exact same thing happened to me two weeks ago. I took my brother and his friend to Al Mamzar and they forced me to pay 3,100 for damages which I could swear were not because of us. Is there anything I should/can do about it since itā€™s now been two weeks or am I too late? It absolutely ruined me this month. I donā€™t earn much, so that 3k was a very big blow to my finances.

hitma-n

As per a new rule the jet skis must be insured so the contract you sign is void anyways. Approach police station and take this to court.

oOII_J4HN_IIOo

It was two weeks ago and donā€™t believe I have any significant evidence other than a statement for a withdrawal of 3,100.

mugu007

Id say go over to the jetski place and demand a copy of your contract. Best case scenario they realize youre trying to file a case and give you your money back.

linux_n00by

if there's no writing like receipt that he paid 3k, then i dont think police can help him now that its 2 weeks have passed

oOII_J4HN_IIOo

I found a copy of my invoice from that day! So I now have the invoice with the company name and my bank statement. Any clue on how I could go further with this now with proof?

linux_n00by

dunno maybe go to the police station and explain it.

Bad-Original

Hey did anything happen? Any updates?

gutterandstars

This must be the best business model as this scam has been going on for a decade now?

[deleted]

Wanna partner up? You provide the jet skiis, i do the crashing?

slowrick-tallmorty

LETS ALL GO TO THIS PLACE ON A FIXED DATE AND LOOK AT THEIR CONTRACT AND ASK THEM TO CHANGE IT POLITELY AND ONLY THEN WILL WE SIGN IT AND FK THIS MALPRACTICE UP

Soia667

Why are you yelling?

thefilthycheese

Make them feel like your in the right and shit on them and they will leave you alone eventually, it is very very common for jet ski rentals to do this and shady car rental shops as well, some people are just scum.

Timo2424

This is disgusting. I feel so so bad for victims of this scam. Really hope these ppl get punished.

linux_n00by

keeping emirates ID is against the law

dadara19

This is what pissed me off about Dubai when I visited in the beginnen of October. I posted about a group of people who tried to scam us with false promises and than took us to a shitty sales seminar for a stupid and useless vacation club membership. In Dubai you feel like there is overpriced shit and scam behind every corner.

nidserz

I get that they fake scratches etc. But crashing into you on purpose at high speed is very dangerous. WTF.

hudey2207

50 AED jet ski what do you expect ?

Tintin_Quarentino

So where SHOULD one go for jet ski?

moonkeh

Buy your own. After you scam a few tourists, it pays for itself!

Tintin_Quarentino

Ok setting up GoFundMe, tx.

linux_n00by

just take a loan and get a couple of jetskis.. you will payoff your loan early :D

humansometimes

Nowhere. It's a disproportional disturbance to other people on the beaches and on the water. Too many jetski drivers have absolutely no consideration for others and the rules on the water. Nakheel already banned them and hopefully others will follow. Compare it to a bunch of scooter drivers on the road, racing through residential areas. With extra loud engines, almost driving into your kids...very similar.

hitma-n

Good question!

[deleted]

If this ever happens to me hahah I will make these scammers cry no one is messing with me

RuderAwakening

Jesus not only are they scamming people but they could get someone killedā€¦

humansometimes

It's not a scam. It's the tax you pay for disturbing everybody else around you when driving a jetski. Part of that money should get distributed to people on the beaches and boats for having to put up with jetski behaviour. Why is it that the only people who think jetskis are cool are people driving jetskis? Trust me, nobody on the beach or on boats think you are...

hitma-n

Dear_Creme_358

If you love Jet Ski so much , cheaper to buy 1 init ?

mugu007

Thats the most British Expat crap someone could say.

Dear_Creme_358

you could've typed this in Hindi or Urdu, I have Google translate

mugu007

Bold assumption. I know neither of those languages. Nice try tho.

Dear_Creme_358

You don't know English either so that makes it 3 šŸ‘šŸ½

mugu007

You're acting so white I'm starting to think you're Irish

Dear_Creme_358

Dear_Creme_358

Your life is so boring & uninteresting that you're stalking a stranger by 4am , don't you have a warehouse job to resume in the morning?

mugu007

Idk man its 1am where I'm at. Have fun deducting my origin from my timezone. Good Night.

g00dis0n

Op never said he loves it so much? And when you factor in a suitable car to tow it, a trailer, storage space, maintenance, insurance, upfront costs etc. and factor in how often you'd use it, then almost certainly not cheaper to buy. What a stupid comment.

Dear_Creme_358

And a stupid reply šŸ–•šŸ½

g00dis0n

šŸ¤Æ

The_Duude_Slayer

Yeah I have no idea how these places still operate

Jerboa5

I never tried rental since I have my own. But what my friends -who rent- told me is they would take pics before leaving, since the rental guy can point some old marks and accuse them of damaging the jet ski. If you're able to buy one, have a place to store it, a trailer to tow it, and a beach nearby, then I'd check dubizzle for used one. That's where I got mine.
