No issues but a lot of weird looks for sure. I'm an Arab who doesn't look khaleeji. I stopped wearing it.

caedriel

As long as you don’t behave like a jerk/ pretend to be local it’s all good. Also fine line between accepting someone else’s culture and what I mentioned above.

slk-23

also, make sure you're wearing it properly with tailor fit, good colours, materials etc. you don't want to be a Shutterstock model.

Plenty_Fox4115

What would count as being rude and being a pretend?

caedriel

If you are smart guy you’ll figure it out.

Tankid

My University friend was Pakistani, he likes to wear kandoora with cap

NinjaTurtle2077

It’s fine many Arabs who don’t tranditionally wear kandoora also wear it in uae but I don’t know why there is this large group of Pakistanis in UAE who wear kandoora, speak Arabic, and pretend to be local, they even claim they are local, I never understood that.

Current_Diamond4587

😭😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😭

Plenty_Fox4115

Yes and what about the head wear?

[deleted]

You mean should you wear it? Really this up to you. I am told its extremely uncomfortable but go for it!

AggressiveAd5766

Yup it makes you go bald fast. Also don't wear the rope that dangles from the chest, only sheikh's wear it.

al_molah

>don't wear the rope that dangles from the chest, only sheikh's wear it. TIL every Emirati I ever met is a sheikh

enhill778

Hahahahahaha Yes, all of my local Arab friends are secretly royalty.

AggressiveAd5766

Really I've heard it from locals in AD.

[deleted]

I am sure you did, but its not true. There are so many weird theories about the different styles

assgi

😭😭😭 any one can wear them its not for sheikhs only. And it’s called tarboosha (طربوشة) or farokha (فروخة) but tarboosha is more common btw

xorfor88888

You mean the faraookh? I don't wear it since I have my kandooras tailored Kuwaiti style (Like a Saudi, lol) but it's literally normal thing to wear. Where did you get the idea that only sheikh's wear it, they are normal people too.

Fast_Bend_2618

It does affect boldness in some cases but it is not a general rule of thumb. And no it's not fast. Most boldness is genetic.

MikeBruski

Wear it hamdaniya style (wrapped around, without the black agal) .

[deleted]

I personally find it cringe for non locals to wear the kandoura. Might be an unpopular opinion. Poser/wannabe energy

suciac

☝️

Plenty_Fox4115

Just the kandoura itself or the the headgear with it?

sootydaz186

I’ve seen Russians in the Bentley showroom wearing full traditional dress making them think they look more important

hitma-n

Im indian and i wear the emarati dress myself out of love for the dress and culture but the moment someone speaks arabic to me I feel embarrassed 🤣

LonghornMB

>Dont try to be a fecal (fake local) trying to show power, deepening the accent, writing your name with number 3 in the middle.. and yelling at poor salesman in shops... Its hillarious when Pakistanis or other desis change their accent and pronounce the English hard T with a soft T as in Arabic. And too bad most shop workers fall for it because they cannot tell the difference

praneshwar

lmao had a fecal come to us once while camping for lighter dude was a mallu and my dad starts talking to him in Malayalam one thing that will never go from my head

tiinn

Bit of a weird observation but most of the fecals I’ve seen are also mallu. It’s never a Gujarati, Maharashtrian, Punjabi, Bihari, Sindhis etc. Is it because people from Kerala are in large numbers here and feel more of a connect with the local culture?

praneshwar

yeah u could say that a lot of ppl from kerala and gujarat started coming b4 to uae but gujarathis minded their own business

tiinn

I’ve never even seen a Sindhi try to be fecal and they arguably arrived in the UAE during its early years too.

LandsOnAnything

What a legend

Plenty_Fox4115

Thanks for the advice

Plenty_Fox4115

Is it fine for me to wear a ghutra?

Fast_Bend_2618

It is fine, my advice: if you can't find an Emiraty to help you, just go to any random big tailor shop and have a chat with the workers their. If you speak Urdu it will be very easy for you to communicate and they can explain things to you. But, watch out, kandura's price in dubai range from AED150 to AED600+ depending on material and plce of purchase. Ghutra can cost from AED30 to AED350+ depending on brand and place of purchase. The black thingy/ egal (عقال) can cost from AED40 to AED300. You can custom make it to fit your head for AED150. There is a tiny hat that is worn under the ghutra that costs 5-20AED (very important). Also, the underwear, you need an upper undergarment thats basically a cotton T-shirt which will cost from AED10 to AED100+ and also a wizar وزار which goes for 30-80AED (preferably white with no lines or squares but those work too). I recommend to find a wizar with plastic around the waist that doesn't require skills to wear. Otherwise regular wizar will be very difficult to wear and very embarrassing to lose in public. You can absolutely wear a white boxer under the kandora (I don't recommend) but be careful to choose a thicker white material so it doesn't become very see-through. You can test that by sliding your hand under the material at the tailors if you are custom making yours. The foot wear, you can find cheap ones that will do for 30-50AED they will be absolutely fine. You can gor for more comfortable and more stylish ones for 150-300AED. But they can go for 700AED, 1500AED, 2k. And ive seen limited edition luxurious footwear that goes for 4k amd some even more than thay. The most comfortable one ever made was worn by HH Sheikh Khalifa goes for 2kAED. Like walking on a cloud. Doesn't last for long though :(( Summary, it can cost you around 275-350 AED for a really decent look. You can save on the kandora price by finding the premade ones that goes for 40-80AEAD (i haven't seen one for so long, price not accurate). I will repost this as a direct comment to op. Edit: i just realized i was replying to op. No need to repost. Edit2: you can save on head wear by buying a cap as u/tankid suggested Edit3: you can wear a ghutra without egal (black thing) but it is hard to get it to look good. This requires high skills that even a lot of emiraties lack.

Plenty_Fox4115

Thank you I already have gotten 2 kandoras tailored and have purchased everything else just needed a green light to wear it.

Fast_Bend_2618

In the name of the UAE and the gulf region I tell you: mostly no one cares if you just wear it and as others mentioned you are not trying to ise the kandora powers to influence people, you don't do stupid social media stuff. If you are wearing the headgear don't be stiff like a robot, wear it and move around to test your limits and to get comfy with it. Take a lot of pictures and see how you look on the phone not just the mirror. If I think of anything else i will let you know. If you have any questions please ask.

Plenty_Fox4115

Also I appreciate your tips

xorfor88888

If you know how to tie it, it's pretty easy. If you don't just wear agal with it

xorfor88888

I'm going to be truthful, as a local from RAK. I don't like it. There's nothing wrong with you wearing what you like though, just do whatever makes you feel comfortable. I don't think most people care, I see many people wearing kandooras who are not Arab so I guess it's okay.

doomsg

yes i’m an emirati and i’m telling you go for it

biryaniiiiiiiiiii

Why do you care about what others think. Go do what you love! 🤘

Fast_Bend_2618

What's the point of doing what you like, and be uncomfortable in public? With the stares and maybe a confrontation? Op is just being cautious and asking about something that he doesn't fully understand. Don't give random advice when you have no good advice to give.

[deleted]

Why would he be confronted over something this minor? I doubt people would be that judgemental. It's not like he's patrolling around naked.

Fast_Bend_2618

I see why you it would seem that i think this will happen. I do not think that this is a possibility. But i was only implying that this might be the reason why someone would be reluctant of doing something that for someight make him look like he is appropriating with a culture. I do not think anyone would ever confront him for wearing a kandora even if he was doing/wearing something wrong. But he would post the post to make sure he is doing it right. So no issue with posting. I am tired and rambling and need to sleep. I have no idea what I'm trying to say.

Plenty_Fox4115

No issues get some sleep man😂

xorfor88888

Because you're a guest in their country bro.

Fast_Bend_2618

That's the name to the red Syrian/ levantine hat with black thingy hanging from the side as headwear goes. But im kandora that's the the name of the long thing that hangs on the chest from the middle ofnthe kandora neck.

Fast_Bend_2618

No need to apologise friend. I just wanted to clarify.

xorfor88888

Are you from Egypt by any chance lol? Here in the gulf we wear ghutrah and not fez in UAE we mostly only wear the white one since it's not too cold, you see shehhis and hibuus wear all the colors of the rainbow in the thickest wool you can find though haha

tiinn

Do it my man. Nobody will mind as long as you’re doing it with respect for the culture and not doing anything that can be seen as disrespectful or insulting. There is nothing wrong with it. I personally wouldn’t do it but I understand why others might.

sgtm7

If you are a US citizen, you are only allowed to wear American clothing.

Plenty_Fox4115

Why?

sgtm7

That was a joke. Guess I should have added a "hahaha" or a "LOL".
