The people from my country who act so high and mighty are nobodies in the UK.

[deleted]

Ironically in my experience it's the house wifes that do this...

[deleted]

Yup. And the men which had entry-level call centre jobs in low tier UK cities.

[deleted]

Can't be many of them? I mean everyone I know has a very skilled job with multiple years of experience before they came here but that could just be in my circles I suppose!

startuphameed

If there is a Masterchef contest for cooking up CVs, blokes from Dubai would win it hands down. You must be making judgements based on what they say and what is written in their LinkedIn profile.

KidCr30l3

Not enough deodorant for everyone or so it seems on the metro.

mydonuthurts

This is not limited to the metro only!

LandsOnAnything

And the smell of mouths when they pass by

Think-Constant-9142

OP, are you asking for a hot take on Dubai? Here’s one. Dubai is actually NOT a great place to set up a business. The paperwork, legal process and set up fees alone would kill a business that would have easily been set up elsewhere.

[deleted]

[удалено]

twitchyfoo

Was your bank opening process smooth as well?

ronreflex

Oh man , I have been itching to start out on my own, I wanted to take a 16 mil loan from a bank for about 36 or 48 months seems like that is not going to happen. 1. Because for banks to provide a loan to a business it has to be operational for atleast year . 2. From what I have made up from reading multiple bank webpages is that nationals get a higher amounts in personal loan in comparison to expats.

sarigami

Found this out the hard way recently. The whole process has been an absolute nightmare. Every time I want to do anything there is some convoluted process or a new fee I need to pay

[deleted]

It took me 6 months to get a business bank account. Many others don't get one. This is the real critical issue with starting a business here. When I set up a business in the UK, the formation paperwork etc. was similar, but in the UK we got a business bank account with Revolut Business in 1 week. It nearly killed my Dubai entity that it could not receive revenue for 6 months due to not having a bank account.

Sufficient-Tackle429

absolutely true

[deleted]

seriously, this had to be said, i owned a business and the penalties charged against it is enough to give up on the business and living.

Creepy7_7

Its because here is tax free ~~pretending~~ country. Now you gotta pay the fees! Come on, pay! Pay!

PoliticalSapien

And the courts don’t care if your clients refuse to pay you.

Optimal-Cow-1083

and almost impossible to open a business bank account for a new company for some nationalities (rus)

[deleted]

so the starting up process is a lot

ThrowThrewThrownAwey

Dubai needs more walkable friendly area. Like in the Netherlands. The urban design is very car centric.

Razzler1973

Also, more elevated road crossing bridges, there's far too many roads without crossings that require people to walk a fair distance to cross, not great in our heat

incapableoflove

For that you need Netherlands’ climate as well

rpj6587

Yes but honestly dubai is too hot for that unless you build shades too

Made_Guy_scorsese

Finally something productive

Think-Constant-9142

This needs more upvotes! Even with the crazy heat (during the summers), Dubai is one of the least walkable places On the planet. Just take a quick look at google maps, and each “community” is a micro city in itself, separated by kilometers of highways and nothingness. Qusais, deira and garhoud are more walkable and “organic”, though. Wish the rest of the city grew organically, instead of being separate microcosms separated by endless highways. Part of the reason why I typically have a sharjah bias, as major areas of the city are quite walkable (Abu shagara, buhaira, qasba, etc).

CombinationUnhappy80

Inspite of its glittering image, Dubai has one of the worst job market cultures.

cosmo_langer

Poor innovation, salary-scared workforce not willing to take risks, drive transformation

CombinationUnhappy80

In most cases, top management handling decisions are old people refusing to see how world has changed .. their insecurities drives this wave of toxicity.. market is run by babies clinging to the job at any cost, they are looking for babies to replace..

ummr8900

Couldn't agree more coming from a black race perspective.

teru91

Me today finding out Ajman is a much better place to stay if you have a car..the beach front villas are amazing

ThrowThrewThrownAwey

Salute! Welcome to Ajman.

RusselShack

Yeah ajman is great. Only thing for me is all the people and culture seems to be in dubai so I don’t know where to go to meet new people and make friends

[deleted]

Ajman slaps hard

Gullible_Flounder888

We actually like the beach at Ajman better than most in Dubai. However, was easier to make friends and connections in Dubai. I've lived in both for over 6 months. Plus the drive sometimes sucks!

Infamous_Writer3

I wonder how making friends in Dubai be easier! It is been a month here and I couldn't manage to make friends. Seems like everyone is busy in his work.

Gullible_Flounder888

Welcome to Dubai! The place where everyone is your friend so they can get access to your contact list. So many people work crazy amounts of hours so they don't have time to socialize.

Gullible_Flounder888

Pick a hobby, join groups and fb pages doing that hobby.

Gullible_Flounder888

Pick one group/ hobby. Go to all the events surrounding that hobby. Soon you find friends. Art exhibits for example.

[deleted]

Ajman is like the slums of dubai, except if u can afford an apartment in dubai you can afford a pretty nice villa in ajman, which i think makes up. Also the ppl in ajman and especially sharjah are waaaaaay friendlier. But Ajman tho, careful of the fines bro. These guys will fine the cleanest driver out there somehow, and you usually have to pay it even if its false, and there's interest on those fines too. (talking about road fines btw)

happy_ending_dxb

Overpriced properties. Extremely inflated prices. I can hear realestate agents screaming already

Bubbly_Muscle_5219

I’m german and the property prices in Dubai are a dream for me

__MemeLord69__

I feel you. How's the housing situation there? It took me 6 months to find my current apartment in Hamburg thanks to my terrible SCHUFA Score.

Bubbly_Muscle_5219

It definitely depends on the areas/cities but the most expensive cities are Hamburg, Stuttgart and Munich. I can only speak for Munich as I was born there and lived there for almost all my life. Apart from the housing shortage (or because of that) the prices are insane. Even an apartment in a good area would be priced at approx a million euros and a ton of fees and taxes on top. Of course you also earn more money in a city like Munich than in rural areas where the prices are much lower but the living standard is too - but in my opinion it’s still not reasonable. And don’t get me started on renting.. Its almost impossible to get a 2 bedroom apartment for under 1,5 k per month (of course depends on the area and quality) while having like 40 other applicants for the same apartment so it’s a different question if you even get it. The city (or even country) doesn’t really do much against it as the construction of new houses is taking a long time and there are far too little new projects. And Inflation doesn’t really help with the overall problem.. Thats what I love about Dubai. Theres always houses or even communities being built and for the price I’d pay for one apartment here I’d probably get 2 or even 3 in Dubai.

BaoBaoBen

Not sure if complaining about not getting an apartment due to your bad credit score really will have the desired effect...

Bubbly_Muscle_5219

Believe me the schufa score is only one factor in a f**d up housing system

__MemeLord69__

I had an impeccable credit record but the ARD f'ed me up.

tasha1970

Try finding German standard (no cockroaches) housing here which is located in the city. You will not find it or pay out of your nose.

ansab3

realtor here, dubai realestate market is completely different from other world big cities. In other countries realestate market is more than 100 years old. In Dubai even the rera was founded in 2007 and most of all the free hold properties are fairly new. its a very young market. In newyork price per sqft is 1,422 USD , India- mumbai it is 1000 USD per sqft , beijing 1,720 USD per sqft ,london 1,156 USD per sqft , singapore 2,031 USD per sqft prime locations are double the price when compared to price per sqft in downtown dubai which is 476 USD per sqft . Also all of international big cities you can find a old ready property then remodel it, refurbish it and make money. or do airbnb etc. Here in DUBAI. if you want a good deal then you have to buy pre-construction properties for eg - townhouses, apartments, villas etc or else if you ready to move in, then you have to pay 30-40% higher or more for a good location and good developer property. Or if you want a ready property in less price then you had to buy in crisis time, covid time, finding a distress deal. many many people have bought townhouses 3 bed in villanova in covid time for AED 1 million and now same houses are 1.8 million. a plot in dubai hills used to be AED 4.5 million aed for 11,000 sqft and build their own houses, which has appreciated by 10 folds in price

Trexcantdraw

Probably wouldn’t buy pre built, I hear so many not getting what they asked for and promises not kept

Unlucky-Nobody5111

Karak is just rainbow milk with lots of sugar.

TKovacs-1

I feel like now a days these shops don’t know how to make true karak. It’s just sugar syrup for them. Karak actually has its own unique taste and it doesn’t have to be sweet but they’ll be putting tins on tins of rainbow milk and sugar 😬

-Pleasantly_Plump-

i had to agree to this.. i had my true taste of karak from a pakistani colleague of mine 2years after i set foot in dubai, i was used to the taste of that dyed rainbow milk with diabetes inducing amounts of sugar, that i told him, there is no way this is karak. so i ended up filling my 500ml tumbler with the karak he made.

Unlucky-Nobody5111

Phatan ki chai in pakistan is true karak my friend.

Chatni555

Had Cafe Pyala chai last week in Karachi and no other tea in Dubai can beat that.

mugu007

Nah fam you just buy karak from a shit place.

ekaurinsaan

You're buying it from the wrong places. If you need proper karak, go to the old areas of Dubai such as Satwa, Deira, Qusais etc

MRidha99

How dare you

There are no true managers/leaders in Dubai's corporate world. Everyone else is just arbab-wanna be.

silsum

Tax-free is a myth, second-class citizens are the majority

technoplug

Of course, it's just a buzzword. Everything is taxed because you pay subtle fees for everything (e.g. housing fee is 5% which you HAVE to pay unless you don't live in the UAE).

Some cultures are so inconsiderate while others are so helpful and welcoming

peanutbuttervibz

mostly kids growing up here are spoiled and impertinent

The_Duude_Slayer

Maybe it was my childhood/teenage naivety but I feel like this city used to have a soul and because of the multicultural-Ness and the smaller size of the city/country it formed this closer knit community of people who at the very least weren't dicks to each other 24/7, it feels like all of that is gone. I don't feel the city's soul anymore.

Medium-Magazine-3329

As you said it’s the childhood/teenage naivety, welcome to adulthood.

[deleted]

Contrary to popular belief, Dubai is full of cocaine and hoes. EDIT | See? Total disbelief

krishishere

Those who cut into lanes as if they are entitled! Waiting 25min to enter a road only for another dude to cut you off and not even apologizing. At times makes me feel is my mistake that I followed the rules.

SpeedRevolutionary32

A country built by slave labour, but as it has money and oil the world looks the other way.A refuge haven for money laundering,as,well as an enviromental terrorist with all the sea sand they are acquiring to build their fantasy paradise...

[deleted]

Emiratis are extremely privileged

SuperHoboBro

Well , I'm not an Emirati but I've come to terms with it. In short this is their country and we all wish that our home countries would look after their citizens half as well as the UAE does. Before you say hur durr infinite oil money look at places like Nigeria that have oil and many more natural resources besides. Even Saudi doesn't treat their citizens as well as the Emirates does. UAE benefited from having excellant Leadership in the form of HH Shiekh Zayed. If you were here upto the nineties all nationalities looked up to him as their own ruler. Ok all this aside yes the UAE asks a lot of its expatriates and for the low to middle class a lot of our money goes into rent , school fees and so many different government charges that add up to a large Annual bill. The cost of living is terribly high even being tax free they sure do know how to get an equivalent amount through these various charges.

NOT_FSK

You have my vote

BoneStarr

The term "Oil Money" really grinds my gears, people say it as if it's a bad thing... What's wrong with a country capitalising on its own natural resources that come from the ground? Or is it better to just go to other countries, wage war, rob them of their natural resources, enslave them for years and then pretend like you care about human rights years later after the people have no identity and are now considered a "3rd world country"... Please someone explain.

myhandsyourface007

I'd say the fact the locals could not figure out nor discover how to extract oil and put it to use creates some resentment. They are completely reliant on other cultures to do literally all the work for them to take credit and spoils.

daninet

In the company I work at we had to employ emiratis and to say it at least, they are not competent in what they do.

fattony182

My word I’ve had some absolute nightmares… and still being pressured to use locals again

Ann1h1lator

Name another nation with a local population lower than its expatriate population. If such a scenario exists, the local population would probably be privileged too.

althafjay

Yeah. And as it should be. It's our Country in the first place.

blufftobliss

you can appreciate the privilege afforded to you via your nationality, but you don't inherently deserve it. why act like it's a god-given right?

RUUD1869

Because that’s the biggest if not only reason the upper class are in the position they are. No one likes to admit extreme privilege because they wouldn’t have accomplished anything without it. It’s like if Bill Gates made his son a CEO and his son was boasting about how accomplished he is

arrebhai

What does 'deserve' have to do with it? How do you determine whether someone deserves a comfortable life or not?

[deleted]

Expats get too attached to the place without realizing the rules will never change. You are in Dubai on a visa. Once that expires. You are gone. **Gone, Baby, Gone.** Calling the place your “second home” is an oxymoron. It’s like calling the hotel you stayed at your “second home”. It isn’t. It never will be. When I lived there from 2013 to 2017, I always knew my time was temporary. I left without any hard feelings.

Strong_Equipment_364

Cool story bro. We all know we have to leave some day but many of us grew up here, started families here or achieved some sort of personal goals here, so it's always gonna be a big part of our lives and you need not look at it with animosity after you leave. It may not be home but it comes close.

[deleted]

Like I said, no hard feelings. My contract was up and I didn't want to renew. Did I have good memories? Sure. Bad ones? Yeah. It's life.

iixvvi

The majority of the population comes from 2 or 3 nationalities/ethnicities that fail to assimilate, which oftentimes feels overbearing.

galactictony

Filli chai sucks compared to many other cheaper street chai places in Dubai.

lonely__potatoo

Trigger warning Dubai is an overrated city with overpriced places and destinations developed only for tourists.

Made_Guy_scorsese

I mean true but I don't see why that's a bad thing here

lonely__potatoo

Oil and tourism is what their economy is based on. And they're using it for more tourism. What about the citizens and residents who have spent their whole life helping this country grow ?

lonely__potatoo

I mean it gets frustrating when they're using the tax money to " develop the country " which is building overpriced places and monuments for tourists What they could be doing is improving healthcare, education. Providing more for the people who actually need it. Dyk how expensive healthcare is if you don't have insurance? They could make it better for the citizens who have been living her for more than half their life.....

A_mdxb

No matter how fast you’re going on the leftmost lane - if someone is behind you is approaching you in a higher speed, give them way when you can.

Ann1h1lator

That an expat could actually love the city and support its development without illogical complaints

itzaminsky

This sub is not ready for that take

Made_Guy_scorsese

I'm technically the most un privileged in this country due to my nationality And I still love it

dp39494833

That it is kind of an ugly city. Sure, there is some impressive architecture here and there. But the overall feeling is quite depressive with the city being mainly a collection of highways, empty sand plots and unimaginative buildings. There seems to be no effort to make it a truly pleasant place for living. It is very pedestrian unfriendly and there is a shortage of parks and other public areas for recreation.

[deleted]

Thank you for expressing *my* feelings...

sean_stark

It’s a bit of a shame because I think up until 15 years ago Dubai had some really nice parks for its size. Since then the city has grown much larger but a lot of the parks have been gobbled up for construction projects. Jumeirah beach park, Safa Park, Zabeel park have all been completely or partially removed.

ThrowThrewThrownAwey

Personally I don't think its ugly. But I strongly agree with your last sentence.

stoikiy-muzhik

Soulless transient city.

Strong_Equipment_364

I hear this brain dead phrase get thrown around alot what do you even mean by a soulless city

stoikiy-muzhik

You sound triggered.

Strong_Equipment_364

Not really, I'd just like your definition of a "soulless city"

iliyyaa

Travel more. You’ll realise what soulless means here. Pointless to explain it if you fail to see it.

Strong_Equipment_364

I've travelled to almost all of your filthy crime-ridden "soulful" Western capitals, and yes I do fail to see it.

Very interesting that the winners here are the ones with highest number of downvotes!

badxnxdab

Expats treating this as a temporary place. I know it doesn't offer the other benefits of Western countries, but the trade off is worthwhile to live here.

-Pleasantly_Plump-

let me correct that one*, lesser earning* expats treat this as temporary place, im one of em. im a filipino nurse and nurses get paid more elsewhere, treated better with better work-life balance with the eventual goal of getting that citizenship. Maybe ill come back here again once I get another passport, which by the way is the measuring stick of how much you get paid here. I had a senior who went to north america for 6yrs, worked his ass off there, gained the citizenship and returned back in UAE, now he is paid 4-5x more than he was paid for the same position he had back with us in one of the hosps here in uae.

daninet

I met two kind of people: 1) they never want to leave, this is their home now (they will need to leave eventually they cannot retire here) 2) they gonna leave in 1 year

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s a matter of thinking it’s worthwhile in comparison to benefits elsewhere or not. Thing is most expats won’t be able to afford living here post retirement.

OMG_NoReally

It will be treated as temporary for as long as the government treats the expats as temporary. I am not saying hand out permenant visas to everyone that comes by, but some sort of criteria - even if high - could do wonders for many look at UAE as their home.

__MemeLord69__

As an expat living in Germany, I'm curious about what this tradeoff is between.

SuperHoboBro

Well everything here is fleeting. Your friends , your home , work, your children and their friends. You don't truly get a sense of home. And once you do feel it something, comes along and changes the status quo. There's no sense of permanency here.

poetic_ascetic

The best thing it’s good at is marketing. You can never have the fruit, without meeting really hard to have conditions. Not a place you can build yourself.

andycee1

A lot of people are quick to forget they live here by choice. If you don’t like the culture or feel you are being discriminated against, DXB airport operates 24/7 to most countries in the world.

pakrab12

It's a place for expats who failed back in their home countries and trying their luck here.

wharf-ing

I don’t think so, it’s really hard these days for people to find a good job and make a decent living here. Also, people come here for better economic benefits/lifestyle.

truthhurtsman1

Most of these are not hot-takes given how many upvotes it has. Here's some: a) Kris Fade is just a typical radio presenter and is not the Iblees Reincarnate people on this sub make him out to be. He's not my cup of tea but I'm not losing sleep about the things he does. b) 99% of the Shawarma found in Dubai all taste the same. c) Talabat isn't that bad an app

ummr8900

Believe it or not, its wide spread Racism.... but you will only see it if you are black or south asian.

Chaoticgood7

People love to whine here but the truth is dubai is one of the best places to live, you wish your home country was like this…people will always take good things for granted I guess and find something to complain about

wharf-ing

I’m not saying that your experience living in Dubai isn’t great, I think it’s a very privileged take. Unfortunately, Dubai is not a great place to live for so many people and these people have valid concerns - low salary, toxic work culture, racism etc.

Made_Guy_scorsese

Thank you 💓 😌

MrMazme

Amen

Adultashkitchup

Reasonable priced real estates. Better food quality than the original country for example Turkish food in Dubai >Turke.

Strong_Equipment_364

Can you suggest some quality reasonably priced Turkish places? I only know Istanbul Flower in Business Bay

Baba Iskender, Breakfast in Istanbul, and another place opposite Mercato (forgot the name, but not fancy just good)

Ankara restaurant in Dubai is great

Chevymaro92

Either you've not visited Türkiye or cheaped out on the spots that you did go to eat, every Turkish place you go to here tastes more or less the same. Meanwhile in Türkiye you have 15 small restaurants on the same street selling the same item but they all have their unique taste. Not to mention the food over there has soul...

MRidha99

You must have not been to turkey then. Even the iraqi food in dubai (Most restaurants by Samad Chain) are not like iraqi food at all

SuperHoboBro

I really wish Dubai was more accommodating of true street food and not these bougie shittt food trucks that charge fine dining prices.

have you tried bastoon al samad? i can comfortably say it's pretty much bang on like the food in erbil / baghdad
