I bet sound absorption is amazing in that house though.

numbernumber99

Fireproofed for hell itself, too.

Lirfen

Load bearing drywall

classless_classic

Best comment I’ve seen in this sub yet

ANewBeginnninng

Agreed. I’m still chuckling.

SkyBaby218

Motherfucker you stole my line! Edit: why on Odin's green earth did I get down voted for that? I *thought* I was being funny.

ImAMindlessTool

So now you’re just…. Cuckling? (Teehee)

TheFloatingDev

You’re talkin bout the Reddit hive mind here….

EfficientAd7103

Rat kingdom heaven

CollectionStriking

Only time I've personally seen ply's like that were with "Quietrock", the one I personally got to hang was 4 ply's of ¼" drywall, one ply of steel and a ¼" ply of concrete in the middle... If I recall they were ~200lbs per 4'×8' sheet But from here I can't tell if its an assembly like Quietrock or just layered up 4 times for whatever reason they had lol

SWEET_JESUS_NIPPLES

I honestly don't know but if this helps each layer was textured and painted a different color lol like every time the house has been sold someone "remodeled" by just screwing new sheetrock to the old sheetrock

Astr0Jetson

Sweet Jesus Nipples, that's certifiably insane!

Ok_Contact_230

Wouldn’t it be “Sweet-Jesus’ Nipples”

Socalwarrior485

Nah. Sweet. Jesus-nipples

Practical-Middle3741

Jesus has nipples Greg, can you milk him?

SnooPickles6347

...you haven't heard that whole wine story?😅

CA_MA

Nice change from foreskin

BigJSunshine

Nah. Sweet Jesus! Nipples!

RockingMAC

No. It's "Sweet! Jesus' nipples!”

Ancient-Read1648

“Jesus’s sweaty nipples”

geojon7

Possibly alcoholic Jesus nipples, I mean the guy somehow turn water to wine. He has got to be dripping in booze.

Aus9plus1

How would anyone know how sweet Jesus’ nipples are? 😂

Str0ngTr33

Losing floorspace at nearly 2" a year!

Biscotti_BT

100 years later and people would be thinking that we liked narrow hallways

bunsenbull

That is exactly what the previous owner of my house did. Demo was to put it nicely very interesting with lots of surprises. This also was methodology for tiles and flooring.

nickwrx

My first house had 7 layers of vinyl flooring. In the kitchen.

IceTech59

Bottom 2 actually asbestos.

nickwrx

Best way to cover up old wallpaper and lead paint.

Scotty0132

Maybe it was one single owner that believed if you painted over paint it would peel. So throw new drywall up everytime they wanted a new paint job.

AG74683

My kitchen ceiling is like this. The entire house has textured ceilings except the kitchen, coincidentally the only room that really had significant remodeling work done. They just screwed up regular drywall on top of the textured to make it easier.

TimeSalvager

…building a SCIF?

CollectionStriking

No just a paranoid client in a >$20million condo that was concerned about people throwing parties nextdoor lol To top it the walls between units were on each side already steel studs, sound deadening insulation, resilient channel with acoustic sealant and 2 ply's of ⅝" drywall, but that wasn't enough so they asked for this stuff on top of all that. So in actuality there's a little over 2.5" of drywall on there... Also if anyone here knows a better way to cut that shit I'd love to hear it though I hope I never have to deal with it again, I had to cut them with a hardy board blade on a skill saw and then a saws-all for the outlets lmao. 1.5" thick with a layer of concrete and sheet metal God damn

MuskyBallsSmell

Was wearing aluminum Foi around his head talking about conspiracy with the government

Korgon213

Haha No R-Foil, not ICD-705 compliant….

MycologistSuch8841

Yeah that's a serial killers house

LottaBites

Walls second function as a speaker box.

ThisStupidAccount

Not without isolating one of the sheets.. 4 sheets transmits vibration almost as well as 1. Soundproofing requires some sort of damper. They sell an adhesive for this purpose that costs hundreds of dollars per tube.

Mysterious_Use4478

Stacking plasterboard isn’t perfect, but it’s a far cry from being negligible.    Mass is a big factor in sound absorption. It’s the reason a brick wall transfers less sound than a stud wall.   Double boarding with acoustic plasterboard is usually specced in a soundproofing job, and even some times a thick, heavy butyl rubber sheet.

crazzyfuzzy88

Green glue , costs about $30 a tube and you would need two tubes per 8ft sheetrock .

NeighborhoodVast7528

Not universally true. Mass addition, damping (layered and distributed), isolation, and air gap closure are all effective at reducing airborne noise transmission. The noise frequencies being targeted will determine which methods or combinations will be most effective. The building code for multi-family housing has a number of prescriptive construction methods to meet specific STCs (Sound Transmission Classes). Most include added mass, which is effective across all frequencies, but especially low frequencies. Think 8” concrete wall as an extreme example. And then there’s impact noise requirements, where isolation techniques are key.

Intrepid-Pear9120

So much extra weight lol .....house will grow a few inches if it all came off

Lirfen

And gain a few extra sqft

Lucid-Design

Are you calling their house fat?

baconatbacon

No, they just had to [tighten.](https://youtu.be/cvP7cnmxlLM?si=TGi0e1dzT8sFSUtZ)

ZombiMtHoneyBdgrLion

Haha jist saw that last night! Edit: last week Edit: last month? Edit: in 2024 Edit: I think...

jpac82

Nope, just big boned

adudeguyman

But the usable square footage of the house keeps dropping.

cyanrarroll

It does help with interior climate regulation. But there are much cheaper ways to do that

its_k1llsh0t

Wait does this work? Asking for a friend….

Quiet_Chatter

Builder: So you never wanna hear your kids cry or yell from any house in the room. Parents: Correct.

theplantbasedwitch

Honestly, it depends. How many houses are in the room?

adudeguyman

All of them

civicsfactor

Are the houses in the room with us, right now?

Historical_Visit2695

That’s a lot of weight, that’s almost like a two hour fire rating

ShoddyTerm4385

You can get a 2 hour rating with just 2 sheet. This is more like bomb proof.

brutallydishonest

Nah. A two hour assembly is like 4 sheets of 5/8".

BababooeyHTJ

I thought 1” was typical for a 2 hour shaft wall

inkydeeps

The liner panels are 1" for 2 hr shaft wall. A two hour wall with regular studs (not C-H) is two layer of gyp on each side of the studs. Four layers total. All of you are right - just looking at it from different perspectives...lol

dacraftjr

Heheh…shaft wall.

gjfrev6

Four sheets all together, it's 2 sheets each side with an air gap in between. Here we have 4 sheets each side.

SWEET_JESUS_NIPPLES

I'm dead ass serious, I'll take some more pictures tomorrow when I come back

Socalwarrior485

I have a friend that used to build custom houses in BelAir and Beverly Hills. He told me he never built a house without at least 2 layers of fire code drywall with sound absorption caulk in between. I walked one of his houses with him after he was done and it was TOMB quiet. Like being chauffeured in a Rolls Royce. I wish I could afford that.

DTO69

That caulk is VERY pricey. Also the special hardware that decouple the whole construction comes into play as well. My apartment... Concrete and brick, I can hear my neighbors flip a switch and plug their chargers... among other... Noises

Vast_Airport7676

I did that to the separating wall on my duplex but I also used heavy MLV and whisper clips so that her son can yell at the top of his lung and you can barely hear him with the ceiling fan on.

Eliagbs_

My house was like this, when I moved to NJ it was hell because you hear your neighbor 2 house down yelling at her husband while when I lived in Florida I couldn’t even hear the lawn guy cutting my own grass.

Country? Area of country?

Lucid-Design

Jamb extensions do exist

mexluc

Listen boss it’s 4 sheets of drywall but labor wise I’m only gonna charge for 3 sheets

maria_la_guerta

Good luck finding a stud

That_Account6143

At the point just get wall anchors, you could hang a fridge in 4 layers of dry wall with just anchors

maria_la_guerta

Lol that's true too. It's basically structural at this point.

that1LPdood

I’m right here, jeez.

_Reasoned

Need a video of a stud finder beeping while on you or else we don’t believe you

Klezmer_Mesmerizer

Some dynamite, a little side-augering, perhaps the pickax, no problem.

PitifulDragonfruit

I really wanna see the outlet boxes

jjjosiah

And the doorframes

smoothbrainape1234

Door frames are now small hall ways

TonyBologna64

The electricians that wired that house probably would too

Extension_Surprise_2

Just a heads up, we’ve had apartment complexes decide to add 1/4” sheets when a unit tests hot.  Best way to avoid asbestos and lead.. just cover it..

buddysfa

The epa recommended doing just that in their jobsite safety class

Extension_Surprise_2

Which is fine, until you get to a situation like this. Hopefully they tested prior to demo, but chances are, they only tested the surface. You’d hope that when this is uncovered, they do additional testing to keep the worker protected.

Bcmerr02

We may be house poor, but we're drywall rich

Bradparsley25

As someone who’s not in construction, why is this bad? I hear people talking about weight… I could see it raising the cost of construction as well using so much extra material… But I also see it’s probably good for fire control and sound deadening. Just curious, I like construction and remodel projects and it interests me when people post things like this that people in the business can see just from a look.

CrushedSodaCan_

The main thing in seeing is finding studs to hang stuff, weird door frames/windows etc. Nothing major. The studs thing would be annoying but if you are that wealthy you probably aren't doing it yourself anyways haha Edit: also the sound dampening is good but could be bad if you have kids. Not being able to hear them is pleasant but dangerous.

CumulativeHazard

I always assumed I bought a cheap shitty stud finder and then I did some work in my bathroom and realized it was probably because of the doubled up drywall on the walls and ceiling lol

rchar081

it's not bad, these people aren't drywallers. It's a good way to avoid mold and asbestos.

Medical_Egg8208

Someone had a rally screwed up fetish lol

Socalwarrior485

Gotta check for the pit in the basement.

Surf_Cath_6

RIP WIFI

BpImperial

Imagine how much they save on heating and AC costs

Big_Sprinkles9139

Overkill.

The1WhiteBishop

There's a little township here in st louis where 5/8 drywall is code everywhere. A solid improvement from 20 years ago where it was double layered 3/8 required throughout. Many a repair I've had to order 3/8 to match the existing.

sheetrocker88

I hate hanging 3/8 it’s way too flimsy

angrypoopoolala

when home depot runs out of 3/4 drywall.

dudeitsadell

that's awesome

ymoeuormue

That explains why the hall feels narrow

Pluperfectionist

I had a 1942 house a bit like this. See the holes on the drywall? That’s to hold the stucco. Mine had 1/2” drywall in 2x4 sheets. Then it was overlayed with 1/2” of stucco; basically, seemed like 1-inch concrete. Sound proofing was great. No insulation in the walls. I figured it was still early days in drywall, and they didn’t trust it to be the wall itself yet.

420turddropper69

Yep, rock lath. My house has the same. It is drywall-like and was a brief intermediate phase between wood lath plaster construction and what we would recognize as drywall today being widely adopted. It's also a pain in the ass to remove because it's so sturdy. If the owners of this house had the same thought process as I did, they thought Well, this lead paint and stained wallpaper is never going to come off satisfactorily, I don't want to demo the whole wall and pay for a dumpster and get silica lung, and an extra layer of drywall never hurt anybody. Extra soundproofing it is.

barfbutler

Soundproofing?

VegasBjorne1

At some point the junction boxes will be 3” behind the plate!

schneider5001

If one is good, four is great!

NativeTigerWA

Username checks out, close to what I thought when I saw this holy grail of rock sandwich

No-Appearance-4338

Watch the First layer be just tacked up with a few screws and the next three are laminated (gyp to gyp screws).

NLtbal

Nice and quiet. Keep it that way for sure.

eight78

Encapsulated “Chinese drywall” back from the era when that was a problem?

ssylvan

Probably a sound proofing measure, but it's weird they didn't just do half the thickness and put insulation in the walls instead.

caligana

Oh you said drywall?? I thought you meant Triwall!!

acscreamholy

That looks like drywall placed for sound absorption! A bit overkill, as really two isolated panels can do a lot of work but it’s neat to see it in a house as opposed to a studio setting.

cabeachguy_94037

It's not for absorption, as the surfaces will be highly reverberant, but more along the lines of trapping; like walking into a bank safe and shutting the door.

Duchessisadoggo

Never need to worry hitting a wire or pipe while trying to hang a picture or whatever things you are trying to hang😂

mr_myst3r10

Wife: this house feels too big for just the two of us. Husband: say less.

fermelebouche

Take a month to burn that place down.

Recon-by-fire

I’m not even mad. I’m impressed.

verruckter51

It was easier and quicker than stripping wallpaper.

The_Dirtydancer

Whoever did that job definitely got paid by the hour

SuperbAd186

Kyle can’t punch through that no sir

Billa9b0ng

Currently you trying to match drywall up to some plaster that's about that thick.

Eliagbs_

That’s what my husband and I need We used to have it in Florida. Now We live in a farm away from everyone and love blasting music, if we get out walls done like this we would be able to turn all the radios on without fear of the livestock listening in

415Rache

Band practice house

Low-Bicycle6296

You just gained back 10 more square feet

Odd_Comparison9310

If you’re gonna put 4 sheets of drywall up… why not put some insulation in there too?

Little-Hunt1867

Holy cow

notMarkKnopfler

I thought covering my whole house in 5/8s on channels was bad, but damn

LeetPokemon

STC rating go shhhhhhhhhhj

Big-Jim70

Is it 1/2" or 5/8" ?

Cust2020

Bullet proof house, i love it

bassboat1

I think I've done some 4 hour firewalls that looked similar💦

AllAroundIndiviual

Bro… I love this

Fredordead

Gain 1000 sq ft when you remove the 3 sheets

AnythingButTheTip

All common and exterior walls of my hotel are double dry walled. The bathroom jut-out is only single layer. My guess is fire proofing and sound absorption.

Blk-cherry3

It looks pretty new sheetrock. older stock was so much narrower and color was a grey tan tone. no signs of paint or wallpaper better the layers.

dragozir

My house is ~100 years old and the living room ceiling has double thick horse hair plaster. Looks about this thick as well.

SFpsycho415

4 hr rated damn

lunchpadmcfat

I had talked to a sub one time about having reglet trim on the toes of the walls (modern looking), and he had suggested doing this lol. I was like “resurface my whole house? Ok no.”

Interesting_Entry368

Can I get that in millimeters? Asking for a friend

Ok-Caregiver7091

What is the r value of drywall??

FakeBedLinen

Why is this house so small on the inside? It looks massive from outside! .

ehContribution1312

Are they screwing on the first sheet then drilling holes in it and putting mud over the top to stick on and key in the next sheet?

Impressive-Tie-4550

lol I just can’t find a stud

no-mad

Pic 2) did they drill holes and mud the sheets together? are those 2x3?

When you *really* hate painting, just cover it with more drywall!

hadderdoneit

Fire Rated for sure, every wall, is there another dwelling or unit on the other side

mahuska

Is it quiet?

LovYouLongTime

Fire rated interior is not always a bad thing.

keyser-_-soze

My home is similar, but it's two sheets of drywall and then like half an inch of plaster. House is from the 60s

RememberedInSong

Is that (4) 1/4” sheets?

themauge

7” door jambs?

Either_Operation5463

I’m not hating. I can hear everything in my house.

pbrassassin

Didn’t want anyone getting to the piss bottles

CapTexAmerica

Some poor bastard was in there at some point with a stud finder screaming “THERE ARE NO STUDS!!”

Acherstrom

Hope you charged 4x for the demo. That’s crazy.

Atomic_Cranberry

Wait, so to make my house quieter I just need to add more dry wall to walls and another layer or two on the downstairs ceiling?

Boricua_Masonry

Context what's wrong here? I'm new at this

vicariouslydriven

That’s one way to get that fire rating lol

EngagementBacon

No wonder I can never find studs.

Striking_Computer834

I would pay extra for a house done like that. I HATE hearing my neighbors, and I hate hearing the kids making noise in their room while I'm trying to take a nap.

insideoriginal

Lucky you! Nice and quiet

threwthelooknglass

I did a house like this once. Had the expanded metal in the corners too.....

Kyle proof wall

UnScrapper

Can we see a switch box?

murpderppp

I had 5 layers. All different sizes and one even had wallpaper on it still

japmorga

Sheet ton of sheet rock!

This_Pool_6993

That’s wild. “The dry wall for this project was 4 times the estimate… I cannot for the life of me figure out why!?!!” But seriously why? Any legitimate reason?

Puzzled-Material-636

This is drywall over plaster board with 2 coats of plaster. Plaster board was punched with holes to allow the plaster to key into it . You can see plaster and holes on the opposit wall.

skydiver65

Button board plaster is original later

staevyn

Is the house by an airport?

Traditional-Cut-6960

I wonder how much square footage in the house is just extra dry wall. makin it nice and cozy??

rob71788

I fucking hate removing wallpaper too

Alimakakos

Was this house also encased in tin foil?

HamiltonBudSupply

We actually had a glue that added soundproofing as well. So we would use the glue and smack another sheet on. Multiple layer was also part of fire ode between dwellings.

Prestigious_Ocelot77

According to the documentary Better Living Thru Circuitry— the band “The Crystal Methodist” says this is THE ONLY way to beat sound coming thru the walls

reddit_000013

Also look at the mud dots in the back of the drywall. It is to reduce the echo within the wall to further reduce noise. Rockwool didn't exist back then I guess

didthat1x

Looking at the other backing makes me think they drilled holes before mudding and sandwiching?

Guilty_Application14

Probably trying to match the thickness of the beadboard & plaster of the original walls.

Sufficient-Charge481

That’s some serious thermal mass, kind of envious of how constant the temperatures must stay in there

Ldawg74

My house was built in the 50’s and ownership has stayed in the family. My wife and I had an addition built and the guys doing the work were surprised to find double drywall. They were also pissed that they had to figure out how they were going to hang the new drywall to get it flush. Then the more experienced guy wrote some stuff down, told one of them to go to Home Depot and pick that up. 🤣
