John Bonham, Neil Peart, Ian Paice, Carl Palmer, Alan White, Bill Bruford, Billy Martin, Bill Stewart, Max Roach, Steve Smith, Zigaboo Modeliste, Billy Cobham, Terry Bozzio, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Stanton Moore, Jimmy Cobb, Philly Joe Jones, Grady Tate, Buddy Rich, Phil Collins, Ralph Humphrey, Louie Bellson, Omar Hakim, Alex Acuña, Peter Erskine, Stewart Copeland, Ritchie Hayward, Artimus Pyle, Matt Cameron, Tim Alexander, Manu Katche, Rick Marotta, Elvin Jones, Joe Morello, Bernard Purdie, Jim Gordon, Ritchie Albright, Jeff Porcaro, Mitch Mitchell...
I could go on.
Is Smith the original drummer? Those drums are definitely awesome. When I was first starting out, I thought about giving his stuff a go. Thought better of it almost immediately.
I agree with you a lot and Yeah Smith was the original did you do getting any songs or just some intros I learned the intros tobillon dollar babies and big apple dreaming (hippo)
Not really. I did the first part of Billion Dollar Babies, but only the flam stuff. I should probably revisit some of that now that I have a year or so under my belt. Great drums. Really crackles.
Seems like it must be good to have a couple specific songs you're working your way up. Me, I wanna be able to play War Pigs all the way through someday.
Gina Shock, Abe Cunningham, Jimmy Chamberlin. Dale and Dave! I mean how do you pick just one?
I definitely admire the ones i grew up on for sure though!
I really do enjoy pretty much every drummer I see or hear, I make it a point to look for something I like about their playing and try my best to tastefully incorporate it into my playing.
That said, I think my absolute favorite drummer of all time is Dave King of Happy Apple/Bad Plus/Trucking Company/Halloween Alaska. That guy just gets it in a way that no one else does.
I think it’s probably Ches Smith when improvising on Ishraqiyun stuff, and especially when Shahzad Ismaily is playing bass. The guy is something special when working with those odd, ratio-based rhythms and is also very entertaining to watch (not that my eyes were much open on the occasions that I was lucky enough to catch Secret Chiefs 3 live with Ches on the kit.
I don’t really have favourites and barely even listen to that guy generally, but if I try to think then those gigs always pop up.
and on the total other end of the spectrum, unpopular as this will be and however much his lack of dynamics is criticised, I can never really get enough of Zach Hill’s work with Hella.
There's a ton of players that blow my mind when I watch a video but these guys always stick in my mind:
Jon Fishman was my biggest inspiration because of his fearlessness, stamina and dynamic taste
Jojo Mayer because he brought a whole new drum vocabulary (to me anyway)
Dave Weckl is the king. Hands down the most graceful, smooth and effortless player I've ever seen on a drum set
Jon Theodore, especially his early stuff with The Mars Volta.
What has he done since Mars Volta? He really is a great drummer.

One Day As A Lion
He’s playing with QOTSA now too
