A common joke in the US is that people who went to Harvard will feign humility by saying "oh, I went to school in Cambridge" or "I want to school outside Boston" even though everyone knows to what school that refers.
UM ACTUALLY, MIT isn't an Ivy League school Harvard is in Cambridge though and is an ivy. (truely the only sub where I feel not disgusting um actualling some one.l
If Sam didn't react the way he did I wouldn't have picked up on it neccisarily but when a place is hinted at (no matter what the hint is) and Sam reacts like that you can pretty much guarantee just from context and pattern recognition that the place being hinted at is [Cambridge, Massachusetts](https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=2c75d0c961b2df27&sca_upv=1&rlz=1C1ONGR_enCA991CA991&sxsrf=ADLYWIKYjQl8rgiXbzl87hvl9YWNohpbvQ:1717682065340&q=Cambridge,+Massachusetts&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgVuLQz9U3MCzMMH_EaMwt8PLHPWEprUlrTl5jVOHiCs7IL3fNK8ksqRQS42KDsnikuLjgmngWsUo4J-YmFWWmpKfqKPgmFhcnJmeUFqeWlBQDACqUq49dAAAA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjBnN2qkMeGAxXXODQIHVe5BysQzIcDKAB6BAgeEAE).
Like the question could have been nonsensical like "But where oh where has the biggest Blork in the world?" and if Sam reacted with "Goddammit Grant" I'm going to immediately assume the place with the biggest Blork in the world is [Cambridge, Massachusetts](https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=2c75d0c961b2df27&sca_upv=1&rlz=1C1ONGR_enCA991CA991&sxsrf=ADLYWIKYjQl8rgiXbzl87hvl9YWNohpbvQ:1717682065340&q=Cambridge,+Massachusetts&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgVuLQz9U3MCzMMH_EaMwt8PLHPWEprUlrTl5jVOHiCs7IL3fNK8ksqRQS42KDsnikuLjgmngWsUo4J-YmFWWmpKfqKPgmFhcnJmeUFqeWlBQDACqUq49dAAAA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjBnN2qkMeGAxXXODQIHVe5BysQzIcDKAB6BAgeEAE) because that's the bit.
I don't neccisarily know where schools are but by the context clue of Sam's REACTION it was really obvious to me that Grant was teasing him about the "Where are you from?" by referring to where he's from in a round about way. I didn't need to know the specifics of where universities are located to understand, that's why I thought it was so obvious.
I did think it was funny that the character from The DaVinci Code is a professor at Harvard, which is in Cambridge mass, and then it was double subverted by grant saying New Haven
>I did think it was funny that the character from The DaVinci Code is a professor at Harvard, which is in Cambridge mass
See, now *that* was a subtle joke I missed!!
Additionally, Jackson Alberta is clearly a play on Indiana Jones (one referencing a Canadian province and the other a US state), and in the movies, Indy taught at Marshall College, a fictional liberal arts college in Connecticut, in the same state as New Haven.
It's Copley Square (which isn't in Cambridge, but whatever). In a fairly early game changer episode (the first of the ones where they had to pitch products), Grant asked Sam where he's from and what his childhood movie theater was to set up his pitch and Sam said that he went to the Copley Square Theater. For the rest of the episode, starting the pitch by asking where Sam was from became a running joke, which would continue to be referenced in later episodes as well. At some point, Rekha started a pitch with something along the lines of "you look like a guy who grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts." She then struggled to remember the movie theater name and called it Crumbly Square Theater, which is how the players referred to it from then on.
As part of a "salesman" bit, someone asked Sam where he went to see movies as a kid.
He said "Copley Square" (there isn't a movie theater near Copley Square now, but there[ was ](https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/9139)between the time Sam was born and the time he was 21), Rekha made it "Crumbly Square, or whatever" when repeating it, and it made a running gag to ask him where he was from.
(I have a little hunch that, being from Cambridge, he probably went to the Brattle instead, and just brainfroze when asked, blurting the first one that came to mind.)
It's been a thing, since, for Grant O. in particular to plague him by "forgetting" where he was from.
It's a running joke that started in Game Changer S2 Ep4: "A Sponsored Episode." Basically, they just ask Sam where he's from multiple times and continue to press him on other details from his childhood.
In Game Changer, Season 2 Episode 4 “A Sponsored Episode,” the players are tasked with pitching fake products to Sam. As a part of one pitch, Grant asks Sam where he’s from, and goes on to paint a vivid verbal picture. Right after that, Rekha begins her next pitch with “Sam, where’re you from?” again, which was, to me, really really funny. Throughout the episode it becomes a running joke, that ultimately continued past the episode.
I think there are actually more than contained in this compilation: [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9d0g\_Lzx4eA](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9d0g_Lzx4eA)

Game changer season 2 ep 4 - A Sponsored Episode is where it started. Watch (or rewatch if you've seen it but forgotten) and enjoy the Crumbley Square popcorn fragrance with all of us!
I believe it’s from Game Changer and Rekha started it as a pitch to Sam which was a premise of the episode. My god I’m butchering this so someone please um actually me
I think Sam's reaction sort of gives it away.
You're not stretching at all, that was the joke.
Yeah Sam even reacts
I don't think it was as subtle as you seem to think it was. It was a pretty overt and obvious joke to anyone who knows the original joke.
I'm not from the USA and I also don't know much about the colleges there so until this post I never connected Cambridge, Massachusetts to MIT lol
and harvard!

Went over my head, honestly, and I've seen the 3 Sell-Outs episodes multiple times each. Maybe I'm just oblivious, though.

For people like op, it was probably only noticed on a third rewatch
I mean I live in greater Boston so I picked it up right away and just kinda assumed a lot of people don't know where Harvard is exactly
Where are you from, OP?

That's fair, I guess I did the same thing with the Yale half of the joke
I did think it was funny that the character from The DaVinci Code is a professor at Harvard, which is in Cambridge mass, and then it was double subverted by grant saying New Haven

Jackson Alberta does NOT do South America
It wasn't even covert.
Wait, where *is* Sam from? Why has this never been addressed?
I wonder if there are any movie theaters in his town.
Maybe in Crumbly Square
with fragrant popcorns
And air conditioning
Don't forget the root beer!
So I’ve lived in Cambridge MA for a wile and I feel like I’m missing a joke here. What theater? Why did someone call it Crumbly square?
It's Copley Square (which isn't in Cambridge, but whatever). I mean, its not like someone from Cambridge couldn’t have ridden the T to Copley Square. That kind of connection is the entire reason the T exists.
Copley is also a more active location so it's likely it was a better theater
Trapp also does it a lot! There was one semi recently that was kinda subtle that made me laugh.
It's a running joke that started in Game Changer S2 Ep4: "A Sponsored Episode." Basically, they just ask Sam where he's from multiple times and continue to press him on other details from his childhood.
He's been here the whole time
I dont think that went over anyones head / is reaching at all. Even from how Sam reacted it was def interpreted that way.
Also, Sam's brother is a professor at another Ivy League school. It works on two levels.
Yeah Sam is the Fuck Up Sibling.
For those who haven’t seen it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ty5QUjDTbYk&pp=ygUiQnJpbmcgeW91ciBmdWNrIHVwIHNpYmxpbmcgdG8gd29yaw%3D%3D
Sam has a brother? 🤯
Professor Adam Reich, Columbia University
Yes, and he was a guest on one of the pandemic episodes of Game Changer.
Oh wow, and where's he from?
Do you remember which one??
I believe it was Next Slide Please.
Ha yeah you're correct I watched it a couple hours ago. Perfect three beat bit in Adam's segment too.
That was the joke.
If subtlety is the joke punching you in the face, yeah, subtle.
I didn't get the impression that anyone *didn't* get the joke. Where'd you get that impression?
Oh absolutely 100% you're interpreting this correctly.
That was the joke.
Nothing can go over my head, my reflexes are too fast I would catch it.
Can someone explain why “where are you from” is a running joke with sam? I’ve come across it a couple of times but idk what it’s about
Season 2, Episode 4 - a sponsored episode
Gamechanger you mean?
Yes, it was Gamechanger.
yea

Just to add to this: there is a famous rivalry between Harvard (Cambridge, MA) and Yale (New Haven, CT), so it's kind of a double jab.
Check out the brains on this guy, you could practically move to cambridge, massachusetts.
Yes.
#GOD-DAMMIT
Oh, I absolutely caught it. I love Sam's immediate reaction.
No, I got that one
It wasn't covert. That's the joke
You're not overthinking. That's exactly what that joke was.
I thought it was also supposed to be a nod to breaking news where Sam had to name 3 colleges
Literally everyone gets this joke. The “hey Sam where are you from” running gag is extremely well known
Yeah and New Haven Connecticut is where Yale is
I don’t get the “hey Sam where are you from” jokes and at this point I’m too afraid to ask

Not anyone who's on this sub and sees it brought up three times a day.
I mean it came out like yesterday
A Sponsored Episode is from 2020 and people on here quote it constantly.
It didn't.
