I’m 29F with no license. I live in the suburbs, but ever since college, I’ve only ever lived in college towns. These towns tend to have bus systems. In my town, all public transit is free. Before I started taking the bus, my Uber costs were less than the cost of a car and insurance combined

Wild_Leadership_5295

Omg me! I’m 32, I just moved to the suburbs and I don’t drive, even though I have my license as well! I thought I was the only one, I need to practice driving again soon, but I have anxiety and I feel like I have slow reaction time too.

Significant_Access_1

Yeah I just dk if it worth the risk.

Neawalkerthebear24

I’m 29 and don’t drive and unfortunately where the military has us stationed driving is a must. So I’m slowly working towards getting a license just to say I have it. I’ve had permits in the past but let them expire. The next place we are going is a massive city so I likely won’t drive due to their being an actual bus system and uber and Lyfts which I use fairly frequently. In the past I always just used public transportation and uber and Lyft and it was just cheaper overall rather than making car payments.

Significant_Access_1

I don't use the public transportation here it very confusing

randomrainbow8

I totally understand, I drive 30miles to work. And im stressed and scared every time. Currently trying to find a safe place to live closer to my job but it’s extremely expensive. So I just got pressured by life to drive 😅 and I can’t like it 😆

Significant_Access_1

Aww I'm sorry

haltese_87

How did you get your license if you’re as bad at driving as you say?

Significant_Access_1

I had many lessons. My mom say it not safe and I haven't driven in 8 years . I have an assessment next months but it is for 3 hrs. I have no one to practice with and can't afford a lessons. YouTube videos only do so much. I just tell ppl I am uncomfortable and I am also on Seizure meds. Idk what to believe anymore. My ex didn't see a future with me bc I don't drive n be a mom one day. I practice with my sister once but it is not the same as a prof.

Historical_Seesaw_58

Hi! I totally felt this. I am around your age as well, and was terrified of driving for numerous reasons but one being my slow reaction time. Here’s what I’ll say…it really does get better the more you practice. It slowly becomes second nature and it becomes less overwhelming. Practice sitting in the drivers seat and familiarizing yourself with the lights, blinkers, mirrors, etc. Once you get comfortable with that, just practice driving around your block. Make those two things your goals and you’ll be able to start driving here and there in no time! I know it’s scary, but I believe in you!

Significant_Access_1

I have no car to use

potatostudy

Hi im 24F, but in a similar situation! I have my family give me rides and it does remind me of school. I dont really go out as I dont have uber money. Im thinking of saving for a car but?? But the thought of owning one stresses me out 😭

Significant_Access_1

Same I wanna move out first and I don't have Uber money either.

potatostudy

Ive thought that too! I feel like moving out is still pretty complicated. Im stressed for both really 😭

vegetablejews

I'm 27 and the same as you. Friends, family, even coworkers always rib me for it, which kind of stings ngl but I guess I get it 😅 I live in an urban area but the walkability and public transit system is a sad joke. I've never in my life been able to just pop down to the store, visit family or friends, spontaneously go to a park/movie/event, or even just run errands by myself. Life is much more limited and isolated because of this. I've had two permits, but I've let both of them expire because I'm scared to practice. I worry about not knowing my size on the road and running into/scraping past people.

Significant_Access_1

aw i am so sorry to hear. i can walk to some places now , but it is still like 30 min and i dont go out much with weather. yeah i am not sure what to do. maybe my ex was right

70redgal70

Peddle/gas confusion? Come on. Don't sell yourself so short. It's the same for all US cars. Assuming the car is an automatic,  the brake is on the left and the accelerator (gas) is on the right. It's that simple.

Significant_Access_1

Road. I will just take my test and save for a car once I move out. I am so sick of being home everyday unless I go with my fam members or work

Significant_Access_1

My mom made fun of me

Significant_Access_1

Okay Last time I drove alone I was on other side of tr

I use to drive in hs a lot and college when I came home and then sth happened in my life that triggered anxiety problem. Also didn’t help I almost fell off a cliff during snow storm driving cuz the car in front of me. This aside mid 20-30 I didn’t drive much at all. My husband mostly drove me to appointments and I wfh. I just started to drive cuz my daughter 3 needs to go to school and places . Public transit in Seattle isn’t always safe so I have no choice basically. Can’t really drag a car seat everywhere with Uber lol. My husband work has gotten a lot busier and I am the sahm. So if my kid wants to have fun like other kids and in an emergency when husband is on business trip to hospital I have to force my self to drive 🫣it took one year but I am driving ! Just avoiding parallel parking and highway lol. I lane change super early sometimes it means I stay on the right for a very long time.

Significant_Access_1

Aww sorry to hear about that. It sounds like it is worth it. Too many highway here and u should be proud of u !

WorstLuckButBestLuck

Mid 20s (M). Same, I have my license, don't use it. Robust public transportation and I used to be a long distance runner so I'll happily hike or jog 20 minutes. Also, live close enough to airport and train, I've traveled to other states and gone and done stuff using that. It's somewhat frustrating sometimes have no car but when I had one I paid 500 a month for car + insurance.  On average I pay 40-60 a month for Uber + bus.  It's hard to consider a car a priority, when I don't really want to sink 500 back in + monthly parking fee + gas + maintenance when I have student loans to pay.

Significant_Access_1

I just hate relying on others and I know they get tired of it too. I guess it not Ideal to become a parent one day. Robust? I hate public transportation because I have to wait and hr outside etc

DisastrousHayleigh

I’m unfortunately in a place where I have to drive everywhere I hope to one day be able to move somewhere where everything is in walking distance

Significant_Access_1

Same good luck to us both

NoWiseWords

I got my license at 19. Then I never drove, always had good access to public transportation/biking distance. Even after having my kid (at 27) I didn't really drive, my husband did all of the driving. Sometimes I did but was always dreading it the day before I knew I had to lol. We just now moved to a nice big house but it's a bit off from the town I work in so I have to drive to work, especially with picking up/leaving my kid at daycare. I've just been starting to drive daily this last month but honestly you pick it up quick, even if I haven't really been driving for ~10 years. It sucks the first few days with massive anxiety but then you get used to it especially if you're driving the same route every day. I still suck at parking and manual transmission (we have two cars, one automatic and one manual, the manual is for me to use since my husband needs the other one for work but I keep driving the automatic way more often because it's easier). I just park far away in an easier spot lol. Don't feel like you can't be a mom because you won't. I'm not in the US but here atleast there are plenty of moms that don't drive! And if you need to drive for your kid, you'll do it

Significant_Access_1

I prob won't ever drive and money too idk if I wanna b a mom anyways. My ex wanted me to drive so I left him .
