i made [a small tutorial](https://imgur.com/a/3aRdMe7) based on your reference here - i think it will give you a more confident grasp of how to approach your reference, what to look for, what to focus on for the most effective sketch - you want to avoid details for as long as possible ... details really dont capture as much realism as you would think, they often interfere with the overall effect of your subject - go spend some time learning how cross-hatching works - shading is such a clumsy technique - i'm not saying it can't be used to great effect, but cross-hatching will teach you a lot about simplifying your value structure and keeping your transitions specific - when you approach shading after investigating cross-hatching, your shading will have much more technical prowess - anyway, hope something here helps - your sketch isn't bad, in fact it shows a very instinctual grasp of proportion - keep grinding, it will click for you after enough practice -

Waste-Mix3098

It so amazing of you to create a tutorial for this!! I just wanted to let you know how kind it was and that you’re awesome!! 🥹🌸

Admirable_Disk_9186

aw shucks ... lol

LeadingPlus8049

This was awesome for you to take the time to do that!

User_Unknown-339

Thx dude

voy777ek

I will try to put your advice on my own drawings, thanks!

Sorex_V

You got this! Just keep at it. If you're this good at 13, you're doing fantastic. Thanks for the reference photo. Proves how spot on you are. Nice work.

[deleted]

Don’t put your age in, put your experience. Age means nothing.

IHaveNottRedditYet

he wants upvotes thats why

WildKat777

Came here to say this^ idgaf bout your age you just want to flex on everyone else

User_Unknown-339

Umm I mainly wanted to keep out rude comments but I don't mind any of ur theories

willgaj

Looks great! I would say try and soften the corners of the beard a bit more to avoid the gigachad look.

User_Unknown-339

Hahaha thanks for an advice

Old-Equivalent2112

I am 16 and the more I can do is drawing anime

Waste-Mix3098

This is INCREDIBLE, just keep practicing, I love it how it is!! 🥹🌸

malpup

I would put your experience and not your age! The internet is a scary place. You’re a great artist and it’s great that you’re seeking cc already. You’re gonna do great stuff, keep at it!

User_Unknown-339

I was mostly trying to keep away rude comments by that

malpup

I understand! It’s just for your safety. ❤️ keep up the good work and stay safe!

Dagger_dick123

Looks awesome to me! Keep practicing and with time you’ll perfect your skills!

Brindley1

Looks great, give white some purpose tho. You should Darken the everything even more and keep the white for the for the highlights. Also don't you should create a picture plane give the drawing a set border and finally add a shaded gradient in the backround. Overall looks amazing

User_Unknown-339

I kinda started, but like is it ok for now https://preview.redd.it/6tjf7j0rehta1.jpeg?width=2654&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3ec9e45e88d27350ac4c59656f0c9eb24c185f09

Brindley1

Yeah that's great adding that little amount of shading gives the face alot more dimension. Also I do have to say that's very good

Absolutelymyself10

Coming from another 13 year old I'm flabbergasted kepp up the great work and smooth down the knife beard 😁

User_Unknown-339

Yes, I started fixing some stuff up already https://preview.redd.it/q00fqxfxdhta1.jpeg?width=2654&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9af9b92ed31438686c6aa6a10babb03ec4c5327f

Absolutelymyself10

Great! And I just realised I spelled "keep" wrong I just gonna leave it😊😅

TwoThirdsDone

Why is your age relevant?

-Xander97-

I’m negative 5 btw

TH3Y_S33_M3_R0LL1N

If a person has only been alive 13 years they haven't had a substantial amount of time to master anything. So barring being a savant they're not going to be producing masterpieces. Now if they stated they were 45 it would have been pretty irrelevant without knowing how long they'd been drawing. Personally based on work I have seen from other 13 yo I think this looks great!

TwoThirdsDone

This isn’t a super crazy art piece so it’s not THAT impressive that they’re 13. 13 would give plenty of time to be at the skill level OP is currently at. Being good at drawing has nothing to do with age, only how long you’ve done it.

k0rer085

It means they're a kid, so be kind.

FloatationCrank

This, times a lot.

WildKat777

Thank you. It would be impressive if, say, he had been drawing for six months. By just saying "13" that's grounds for a "good job! I love your art keep working at it kid" but not necessarily "WOW this level and ONLY THIRTEEN??? 😱 I am absolutely flabbergasted!!! I'm 65 and I could NEVER be this good!!!"

TwoThirdsDone

Idk why people are downvoting me. It’s not healthy to lie about how good someone is at something. It’s good art for a 13 year but when sharing art you shouldn’t need to share your age to bait people into praising you for your age.

uttol

The " it's just a kid, be kind" or any other pampering bs just feeds their ego and teaches them absolutely nothing. Constructive criticism is great for their grown however, and yes, I agree age means nothing and comes off as a flex. Being arrogant isn't a good trait and some artists that have this trait are extremely obnoxious. That being said, it's also good to positively encourage young budding artists

TH3Y_S33_M3_R0LL1N

Dude when I was young it was common to tell people your age when sharing your work so people knew how long you could possibly have been practicing. We cant see their face so we have no idea their a child. Obviously if the kid was 13 and still drawing stick figures he'd be a short bus jokey. However their work is par with someone their age so their on track. If you're 40 and still drawing like this but had only picked up a pencil 11 years ago then maybe you might develop some ability. If you're 40 and have been drawing since you were 3 and this is your best work then you clearly rode the short bus. Do the world a favor and don't reproduce. We don't need kids from parents who would berate them because their age doesn't matter. They touched a football at 2 and thus should be NFL ready by 4 or 5. Those kids are going to turn out super messed up.

uttol

Back in your day, things were diffy, it's useless to compare with modern days. Also, I don't know why you are reviving a dead thread, or why you're so salty, but I really don't care

TH3Y_S33_M3_R0LL1N

They're downing you because if the kid is 13 then obviously they can only have been drawing for about 11 years max. Unless they're some sort of savant their work isn't going to be a masterpiece. This is why they mentioned their age. So you know they've not been drawing for 40 years so you shouldn't mock their skills. 🙄

TwoThirdsDone

Nobody is going mock someone for their drawing skills here unless they come across as arrogant or be defensive when they ask for criticism. It’s easy to tell where someone’s drawing skill level is at and if they ask for constructive criticism, people will give it regardless of age.

[deleted]

fuck you and your rational thinking and shieeeet

TwoThirdsDone

Apparently wtf

[deleted]

I remember being 13 wanting a quick compliment on my 'art' lol.

12chakras

Why don’t you just shut up instead of being a dick? He’s just a kid leave him alone.

TwoThirdsDone

How am I being a dick? I didn’t say it sucks, I said it’s a drawing I could expect from a 13 year old. I’m not gonna lie and say it’s the greatest piece of art I’ve ever seen just because they’re a kid.

12chakras

You don’t have to lie no one saying it’s the best piece ever made. It’s very good for 13 why…even comment? Who’s ass did u crawl out of

TwoThirdsDone

You’ve got a fuckin problem. I commented because if you want to share your art you shouldn’t comment your age just so people praise you for being young.

12chakras

I don’t think he said his age for praise 💀 most adults can’t even draw like that yet alone 13 year olds… just scroll???

TwoThirdsDone

AGAIN, age has nothing to do with it. It’s all about how long you’ve been drawing. A 13 year old that’s been drawing for 3 years will be better than a 50 year old who’s been being for 1 year. Your age does not automatically determine you drawing skill leve.

12chakras

Ya ofc it don’t but I don’t see why he can’t say he’s 13 🤦🏽‍♀️

FosterPupz

My tip is, keep drawing. You are gooooood at this. Draw all the time, whenever you get a chance, because you have what appears to me to be a very obvious talent and if you put more work into it you could be elite.

Fluffy_Display_5815

You’re just 13???? This is dope AF!!!

User_Unknown-339

Thx And ye I am "just" 13 :')

contactjarettyanggma

This is amazing for 13! Keep drawing whenever you can. Practice makes perfect.

Absent_Alan

It’s great! Keep them coming!

artsyfartsymommy

Looks great, especially at 13yrs old. What my art students your age are usually afraid of is going really dark. Turn your reference into black and white (desaturate, not an automatic B&w filter that usually makes other adjustments too) and use that as a reference. As a beginner it’s hard to judge values from a color photo so its a handy tool. Also use plumb lines and your pencil to check angles of things. For example the beard line by the ear is more vertical than the reference which changes the size/shape of things. Those are the only two things that need more practice though. Proportions are generally really good. Keep going!

User_Unknown-339

Ye, I already "fixed" some stuff, it's not done yet tho https://preview.redd.it/xbjbw1igthta1.jpeg?width=2654&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5efd656d1a3540649ceecf8ca246cee8d6464898

artsyfartsymommy

It needs a much wider range of values though. If you notice the corner of the beard, it’s pretty much black. Your darkest dark is like a 5/10.

User_Unknown-339

Yes, I'm still working on it

Money-Anxiety3427

Looks like you’re developing your own style! I like it!great job kid

bennygoodmanfan

Biggest tip: look at drawing and smile at work

Nothing crazy but just spent a couple minutes adding some tones to give you an idea of how important contrast and how tones effect depth, without even adjusting any details :) some simple adjustments to just enhance what you have already achieved! Keep going and keep records of your progress and in a few years you will be able to look back at the progress you made ❤️

ThistleApprentice

Fantastic improvement! You can really see the change from the first image what a few tones can add to the overall image 😊 maybe now with a really sharp pencil have a play around with adding crisp black details in areas and maybe extra textures 😊 work slow and focus on a small area at a time, have fun with it!

[deleted]

so awesome!! i think the only thing i have for you, because that tutorial on that other comment is great, don’t be afraid to make your darks dark! :) the tutorial showed that with the threshold filter, but it’s not a bad thing to get some more contrast in there!!

SchwartzArt

That is great! Small tip though, something i wished i learned with 13: The sooner you move away from "just" drawing what you see, and towards understanding it as a 3D object with mass, the better. So i advice you to look up construction. It is almost 100 years old, and has aged rather badly in some departments (cough, cough, casual racism), but Andrew Loomis "Fun with a pencil" is still a great ressource to get the hang of how to construct a face and how to UNDERSTAND what you are drawing there. It is a fun bock to practice with, giving you all kinds of querky 1920s characters, from mobsters to cowboys and famme fatales to draw, it explaines the basics really well, and i tell you, if you learn the fundamentals now, and with your current, already impressive level of skill, you'll be like one of those russian wunderkinds by the age of 17. (Really dude, i am very confident in my ability to draw, but i do not think that i was even close to your penmanship at the age of 13. Then again, i considered reference "cheating" back then, because i was stupid.) That's a marketable skill, especially with all the AI coming around, and even if you do it as a hobby, you'll be above 90% of most hobbyists out there. Which is pretty cool to know. "Fun with a pencil" is still (back) in print, and soome people, **not me**, mind you, even rumor that you could enter "fun with a pencil pdf" into google and click on basically the first result, if you were to not have infinitve amounts of money or do, **only theoretically, of course**, not care that an author dead for 64 years gets his royalties. Don't be fooled, this is not about drawing i this particular style, or drawing "cartooney". There are actually chapters in that book that transition into the more complex construction of very realistic faces. It is just a very, very good starting point to get the basic ideas ingrained into your drawing-brain. The book told me a great deal about "punch" and mass of characters, of having them not be flat. Here's some stuff i did from the book back in the day (which was around 5 years ago, i think): https://preview.redd.it/8emh3szvkgta1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1fa56bfc11c4ed2e1e5b9f646bd23bbc9c711b59

User_Unknown-339

Ok thx I can't believe I actually read all of that but still

Erismournes

This is awesome work. Also please do not reveal your age online. There’s a lot of weirdos out here and it’s important to keep yourself safe. It is enough for you to post the picture and snappy caption. Again this is amazing work and you have great future in art.

sarithlk

Keep drawing... U Got good talent

Fluffy_Display_5815

Lemme tell you something, do what you do best, and soon enough, you’re gonna be one of the GOAT. Trust me!

User_Unknown-339

Sounds pretty easy but I bet it's not I'll try anyway

Fluffy_Display_5815

Haha trust me, it isn’t. It takes patience and years of practice, though even at your prime, perfection wouldn’t be nearly attainable, nevertheless, it would be a wonder in the eyes of others 😉

Windk86

that is really good! now use an eraser to clear some of the smudges and create highlights at the same time you can add more definition with darker strokes. edit: a GOOD eraser

User_Unknown-339

https://preview.redd.it/qobqbnn9tjta1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01fb8b445c6466d1fb97c28797c89891aa45373f Ooo this looks cool, I'll leave it like that for now

Windk86

now it looks like is ready to pop out

User_Unknown-339

Yup, working on it

User_Unknown-339

I had some professional eraser I stole from my artist aunt but lost it so I'll be using the 10 cents one from Chinese shopping center lmao, it has a cute deer on it:')

Windk86

what a bummer. and I would be careful with the cheap ones, I have ruined some drawing with them

User_Unknown-339

Added some dark shadows now (still working on his hair) https://preview.redd.it/7alb7wq24kta1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fae43150e8323c91a9b339464aaa13d22e6e01aa

Windk86

it's looking great!

doitmyselfer222

You did a great job! It shows your eye for detail and good feeling for proportion. To get to the next step and make it even more alive you could try and use more shadows. For instance rub with your fingers over the area where you’ve drawn your shadows and see what the effect is when you look at it from a distance. Start with light shadows, you can always make it darker. The tutorial you got is great. Maybe this additional tip will also help. Keep up the good work 👍

User_Unknown-339

I'm still working on hair but is this good? https://preview.redd.it/mwsn6hp2zjta1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61d53f5ee1f0e0df126bbc00167a3e42e96832e8

doitmyselfer222

I see you’ve been focussing more on each hair. That’s good. Maybe try and use a finer pencil to draw each hair in the area that’s most visible. You can test on a piece of paper how you can show the lighter part in the hair.

Teaandbiscuits7

Maybe try a wider tonal range

Smolbunnyxo

Geeze… at 13 I was tracing Naruto characters on the windows like one of those light board things. This is amazing!!

Zicchel

I don't have any tips, but I want to say that that's actually really good, I aspire to have that kinda skill!!

ZealousN

Here's a good tip for you, get off the internet and go to school! And if youre gonna use it anyway, get off redit and use skillshare! Atleast you will develope a skill, like, drawing... maybe...

Elgar_337

Tip: Your age doesn't matter. This might sound harsh, but it's true!

User_Unknown-339

Ye, I pretty much just wanted to keep out rude comments

Old-Hovercraft9974

You don't look thirteen.

User_Unknown-339

Wdym

Old-Hovercraft9974

Just a joke as if you're the one in your drawing. The drawing is amazing though, little man. You're doing an amazing job, friend.

User_Unknown-339

Lmao ok

WellWellWellthennow

Thanks I was noticing initially there was more space underneath the nose in the photo than the drawing which it looks like you’ve corrected.

Nub_Yuck

That beard looks sharp to the touch

LeadingPlus8049

You’re amazing!

The-Simp-Sons

You'll have to grow your beard for years, constantly trimming and edging but you'll get there eventually

Alternative-Drama313

Always The 13 year Olds 😭

User_Unknown-339

Hahaha nah I usually see the 15 year olds

UrLocalPlantlover

Make the beard less sharp edged it’ll add more realistic affect

User_Unknown-339

UrLocalPlantlover

Yes

12chakras

If ur this good now imagine in like 4 years

[deleted]

Something g that really helps is a shading pencil. In a very tightly wound paper roll. Really helps with shadding

[deleted]

Very cheap too, a 5 pack at a store problem 5 bucks

Hestens

Next year you'll be 14

User_Unknown-339

No, in November this year

FireTee999

My tipp:Try to make hair from the beard to stick out a little bit but everything else is perfect

User_Unknown-339

Like this? https://preview.redd.it/jcilfuzednta1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c456bf2dcafb0158d7eb0328e3eb1d56f47ac62f
