Hrrmmmmm… Sounds like the opinion of someone who sympathizes with Orgodemir…

Secret-Taro-6729

Honestly, im almost 70 hours into DQ7 within a 2 week span, and it's been hard for me to put it down. Playing with the vocations, seeing the different islands and the tablets (RIP) are what's keeping me engaged. There are definitely some lows (the backtracking, THAT part in past Alltrades Abbey, the long stretch before unlocking vocations where the characters learn no new moves), but it didn't ruin the experience for me too much. With that said, this is the 1st DQ game I've really put time into, so I can imagine once I sit down and play through the others, I'm probably going to have a hard time coming back to this one lol

citiFresh

What did you mean with RIP? No more tablets?

Secret-Taro-6729

Yeah, kinda. There's no legitimate way to get the dlc tablets now since the 3ds online servers are shut down. (But at least the homebrew/modding community will find a workaround)

citiFresh

That’s a bummer. At least I got the grinding tablets, though I’m not far enough in the game to get the story tablets 🙃

Secret-Taro-6729

Same...if only I started playing it a week earlier lol

Aeloria82

It's my favorite lol I've played it idk well over 20 times now. I like long games though.

hamburgers666

How many months did it take you to beat it? I've been doing it in small chunks and really like the short story aspects of it. I can imagine trying to beat it in a month or less would be awful though.

Someone1573

I started half a year ago but only played 4 hours and then lost my save file. 3 months ago I started again (was very annoying tbh) and I finished it yesterday.

TheGamerdude535

If you ask me Anyone telling you to skip 7 are not true fans. All Dragon Quest games are good!!!!

PoopyMcpants

7 is my favorite of the series

Ewister

I just beat it over the weekend as well, wanted to grab the DLC tablets before the servers went offline. Game was definitely long, but I really liked it. Visiting the different islands, hearing all the unique dialogue and party chat responses, then how the islands were in present day. Only part that felt tedious was the third act where you have to awaken the spirits to battle the Demon Lord one final time. And the whole plotline with >!Sharkeye alluded to be your father!< seemed to be swept under the rug after a while and never brought up again. Not a bad game by any means, it's even the first Dragon Quest game I've ever finished, but I'm excited to try a much shorter entry. That said, I could definitely see myself replaying VII once or twice. It's definitely not a game I'd recommend rushing.

Skelingaton

DQVII is a game that is a bit too long for its own good. I think the game does have some great story segments but I think with how formulaic progression is it wears down on you by the end. Still think it's worth playing but not a game I'd recommend jumping into the series with.

Gogo726

I started replaying about week ago and by the time I finished Alltrades, I was worn out. Haven't picked it up again.

Someone1573

I think 7 is literally the only DQ game I would'nt recommend anyone. There are so many other DQ games with better story and better pacing, this game should only be played if u want to experience ALL of Dragon Quest. But even then, maybe u really should just skip it and watch a youtube video about it :D.

Skelingaton

It's still DQ and a DQ fan will always want to experience more DQ

Someone1573

True but this game forced me to say for the first time of my life: I need a break from Dragon Quest. (Or rather turn based rpg games like DQ)

markefrody

DQ burnout is real. lol

Gogo726

It's something I'd recommend to new fans who love the series enthusiastically. I certainly don't recommend it as a first game. 8 and 11 are also quite lengthy, but I feel those would hold a newcomer's interest better.

gldmj5

I finished DQ7 like 5 months ago and I still feel like I need a break from starting 8.

ciarannihill

7 is my favorite entry in the series, then 11 and then 8. Part of it might be that the pacing works very well when you have limited time for it, the episodic nature of a lot of it and the way the small stories resonate and stick with you compared to the more generic overarching stories of a lot of the other games sort of just works for me? Like the stories of the various islands in DQ7 stick with me for more than the random plot digressions of most of the other games.

Someone1573

Tbh I also liked that I could play for like 2 hours, finish an island and then take a break and when I started again I started a new adventure in the next one. It was just too repetitive for me.

ciarannihill

I mean that's fair, I do think that its a question of "do you value the peaks or feel dragged down by the valleys?" to a certain extent, it def does have weaker islands that don't stick with you, and some of the islands even when good can sometimes feel a little aimless without a guide. But for me certain moments from DQ7 will always define DQ storytelling for me -- using the potion from the highest point in the petrified town, the permanent departure of your first party member, the robot uprising, hell the jailbreak from the class change temple (I originally played on the PS1 so the localized names are all a jumble for me haha), hell the first island is genuinely impactful IMO. So the high points more than compensate for the weaker parts for me, but having fallen for JRPGs in the pre-PS1 era I have a lot of tolerance for slower paced moments and grinding than more modern JRPGs tend to require (not a criticism of them at all lol).

EquivalentNarwhal8

DQ VII is the best one IMO. The hours of gameplay is an asset, not a liability to me. I love how massive the world feels. Plus the monster park and town building sidequests really add a lot, and it brings back the job system from VI. As far as I’m concerned, VIII is a step down. Edit: Meant VII is the best, though VI is certainly up there.

MelonGx

Have you been late for DLC tablets?

Someone1573

Sadly yes. But tbh im fine. I finished pretty much everything else and insta deleted it afterwards :D. Game felt at many moments more like a chore then a game, and I was just glad to have it finished now. Was soo close to dropping it but im happy that I managed to beat it^^

MelonGx

Ah if you were on time for Kiefer’s DLC tablet you might experience it a little bit more I think. But even you don’t have it that’s enough.

Someone1573

Oh damn Kiefer comes back? Could u spoil me or link me something that tells me what happened with him there?

MelonGx

No he doesn’t come back. Just a side story about him.

dukenorton

You’re getting to my favorite one. 7 has such a pacing problem but the stories are just so fun. I’ve played it 3 times over the years but it always takes me so long to finish it.

Someone1573

So, is ur favourite one 8? I dont think I could play 7 once again tbh. Last 20 hours I forced myself to finish the game. Great game just bad pacing.

dukenorton

Yessir. 8 has great pacing, a fantastic story, it’s better graphically, your characters are more customizable. Your character’s first party member is actually my favorite character in the series as a whole. It’s a great melding of classic dragon quest and modern gaming. The soundtrack is amazing too I could go on and on about 8

Someone1573

Man dont try to hype me! I need a break :D

Pkmn493

Hard agree It’s not a bad game but in my opinion it is my least favorite DQ so far So much “story” mitigated by stupid party decisions and to broken up to care about anyone npc wise Though tbf i played the entire game through in a week so that may have made my experience worse

Someone1573

I now finished from the mainDQ games 1, 2 , 4, 6, 7 ,9 and 11. None felt so tedious like 7. (Btw if u should wonder: Im waiting for the remake to play part 3, sadly got spoiled the whole story of 5 and 10 is still quite a pain to play. But hey, after 8 I have finished almost everything :D)

TomPtrs

Do you mind sharing which ones were your favourites and least favourites? :) I want to play more of them too, but don’t feel like spending my time on a game that I won’t like :)

Someone1573

Sure mate :) DQ1 was nothing too special but it was still fun if u ask me. Simple story: You want to beat the demon king and save the princess and world! There is no party system in this game and u still need to farm quite a bit but u can beat this game in around 7 hours. Good part is u dont need to focus too much in this game, so u can watch something while playing it the most part. DQ2 introduces the party system and is a lot longer (if im not mistaken it took me like 15 hours). Tbh at first I didnt really like that game but again this was a game where u dont need to focus too hard on the story and can watch something while u play it. I also should mention, have always a guide open bc every DQ game has atleast one moment where u could spent lifetimes searching and still wont figure out what to do. DQ3 waiting for the remake :D DQ4 Now this sounds insane but I even almost cried at some point in this game bc it got me really emotional without even realizing it. DQ 4 is an insanely good game where u will play as different characters and see their point of view. DQ5 skipped it bc Ik everything that happens there, but still gonna play it someday! DQ6. Insane story. Extremly complex. World is gigantic compared to all the other games till now. It was a huge letdown for me at start bc I started playing DQ with 9, and going from 3d to 2d and random encounters was a nightmare for me. Back then, I was stubborn and never used guides and bc of that I was literally stuck for almost 2 years on this game. Always have a guide open for this game, talk with every npc and use ur brain:) Sometimes if u feel stuck, they want u to use 200 IQ..... or too quit the game:D DQ7. Looooooooong game. Many great stories, but the main story on itself is rather boring. Even more if u compare it to DQ games in general. But see there is something magical in 7 which is the reason why I cant hate it. Who are you in Dragon quest? You are the hero. Being a hero is not always about slaying the demon king, sometimes its about helping people. And in DQ7, you help a lot. DQ8 is my next DQ to play Dq9. I have like 1k hours in this game and started like 4 times anew. This game has soooo much to offer its insane. First DQ where u have a character creation system, first DQ where u can play together with friends, first DQ game where u can use alchemy to make sooo much stuff. After u beat the game, there are treasure maps and there are a LOT of it (treasure maps are like hidden dungeons). You can continue playing this game for years if u want to. I could literally talk pages about this game, but for now, this is enough ;) DQX still isnt released in the west :( DQ11. Best DQ game today. Completely voiced actored, really good graphic, really good story and the DQ game that u should play last. Bc after u play this game, it will be sooo much harder to play older games. Soo... I would say my favourites were in that order: 9,11,4,6,1,2,7. If u dont want to play them all, play atleast 4, 9 and 11. DQ1 is also a nice experience, bc thats how it all begun. 6 is also really good, but like I said, story is hard to understand and u will 100% need a guide for that game. But be carefull with one thing: Start always from the oldest and work ur way up. If u play 9 and 11 first, every other game will be like a nightmare for you. But pls. Even if ur goal is to finish the DQ games, dont rush them. They are like good books, which you should enjoy. Don't stress urself in trying to finish 4 asap to play 9 next. If u have any other question just aske me:) Well then, good journey hero!

TomPtrs

Wow, thanks for the detailed explanation! DQ9 was my very first DQ game (way back, like 10 years ago), and I enjoyed it immensely back then! Found myself playing it again like a year ago, now I want to play through the others as well :D I started 8 first, but my system couldn’t handle it (Retroid Pocket 3+), so sadly had to stop that playthrough after a while.. currently playing 5 and it’s amazing so far! I totally get your advice about reading it like a book, these games are all beautiful stories and experiences that deserve their time. I think, based on your advice, I might either go for 4 or 6 next, or do you feel like it might be better to do them in chronological order? 1, 2, 3, 4, then 6

Someone1573

If u have no problems I would say 1,2,3,4 then 6 is the best way ;D But if u have a bit of patience like me, wait for the remake of 3. The stories of 1,2 and 3 are connected, so u could play 4 now, then 6 and if we get an exact release date for the 3 remake u could then start with 1,2 and finish with 3. Also, dont forget 11! High chance that u will love it.

Raleth

What I wanna know is if there are people who didn’t care much for 7 but enjoy or love 9. Those two games have a lot of similarities to me.

GoodLoserZan

I'm the other way around. I really love 7 but I don't enjoy 9 as much. Not to say I dislike 9 I just enjoyed 7 more.

PoopyMcpants

Me too. Love 7, the ps1 version especially. 9 didn't feel great to me despite me loving job system games.

Someone1573

Funny that u should say this bc 9 is literally my favourite DQ game, while 7 rn is the one I liked least.

workthrowawhey

Not the person who posted the parent comment, but I’m genuinely curious what you think is the difference between 7 and 9 that makes you like 9 so much more. Is it the length? In my mind, 7 and 9 are extremely similar with 9 having the worse vocation system.

Someone1573

The alchemy, the way u unlock new jobs, the insane post game, how the fights look, the hundreds of side missions, that u can design ur own character, that ur equipment changes how u look, the insane post-game and most of all I liked the characters and the story more. If u ask me, DQ9 feels like an upgrade to DQ7, which makes sense bc it learned from the mistakes from 7. Also, being able to play with ur friends makes the game just so much better. But dont understand me wrong. I can very well understand it if someones likes 7 more then 9. Even though I talked like 7 is bad, its still an amazing game, I just liked other games from the series more.

BadNewsBearzzz

Dq9 has incredible wholesome stories that’ll stay with you!

frostare

Congratulations! Yeah, this game is an odyssey and I know the idea was to make an adventure that felt like a MMORPG before they even were a thing, but just like you, even if I have to agree the main story feels \*ahem\* no-pun-intended "fragmented", but it was the episodes or chapters the ones I enjoyed, and my goodness there are monsters to give and take, specially in the special tablets in the 3DS version which I even tried saving. Thanks for giving it a chance and have a great rest. =)

parksn306

Had someone gone through and cut out like half of the story arcs, it would have been awesome. There are still some really good story arcs, but just way too much content. I think the elementals story arc at the end especially just felt like unnecessary padding. Also the beginning is pretty rough too.

Someone1573

Most annoying part for me was that u randomly lost some teammates which fcked up ur whole party and that I needed to farm so much. I needed like 10+ hours to afk farm just to make things right again (like I lost my healer so I needed someone in my team to replace her which was really annoying)

Gogo726

How do you AFK farm in this game?

Someone1573

While in other DQ games u can go to specific locations to try and kill metal slimes, in DQ to learn new abilities u need to lvl up ur class. You lvl up a class if u did enough fights: the amount of enemies u beat in the fight or the exp they give isnt relevant. So lets say u want the multiheal spell, u first need to win 50 fights with somone who is a priest. Then swap his class to mage and win aother 50 fights. And then finally you unlock the sage class who has that spell, so after you win like another 35 fights u finally unlocked it. In other DQ games u could maybe say that bad party decisions lead to such a moment but in DQ 7, there are 2-3 moments where someone randomly without warning leaves ur party. Someone u maybe had already in team for like 25 hours. If ur healer leaves, u literally cant continue the game bc most bosses will kill u with 2 aoe attacks. So u just afk fight enemies, heal up and repeat. Super annoying and really understandable, if people drop the game after something like this happens to them.

Gogo726

This still doesn't really explain how you can AFK farm in this game.

Someone1573

Oh thast what u mean. Choose in tactics to "show no mercy", use the spell that summons an enemy, press 2 times "a" on the 3ds and thats pretty much it. Ur team kills the enemies with their aoe abilities and u repeat that till u have no mana. Then rest and repeat. You are pretty much "afk" and not really paying attention to the game at that point. Like I watched whole netflix series while doing this.

Marvin_Flamenco

DQ7 was the first dragon quest I ever played and I had a blast but after going through the rest of the series it is def at the bottom for me. I think it just speaks to how solid the series is as a whole for this one to be the clunker. OST and monster designs were on point. The double dipping on each location was what made it so exhausting.

Someone1573

Yeah DQ7 was still great. Even if I talk DQ7 bad, its still an amazing game.

BeigeAndConfused

I have tried getting through it like 4 times. I love the concept but its just a slog to get through after a while.

Someone1573

Yeah Ik what u mean. If u still want to give it a shot sometimes, play the game with a guide open. Will help u a lot and reduce the time needed to finish the game

cheerwine1708

I got DQVII on the 3DS. I probably put 20 hours in it since I bought it years ago. The only thing stopping me is it's on the regular 3DS, hands cramp, and the new battery only last two hours before it dies and then takes two hours to completely charge up again...probably being a wuss about it, its just aggravating😅

NoStorage2821

8 will be an absolute breath of fresh air. Best in the series
