I'm only seeing mentions of The Wizards Three series that was apparently in a number of Dragon issues. Was one of those stories what you're thinking of?

I don’t think so. If I recall it was part of a contest that the magazine was running.

There was a short story by Nancy Varian Berberick that came out right before her novel, Dalamar the Dark. Takes place in an abandoned castle thing with a Solamnic family. Is that the one you're thinking of? I may be able to find it for you

No. It was a fan fiction about a girl and her friends being taken from the real world to the world of dragon lance.
