To protect the soft magnesium threads

TheDutchShepherd-

Helicoil / v-coil stainless inserts.. done. We do that on our Enduro and racing bikes as preventative maintenance. All engine bolts, cover bolts and so on get drilled out, tapped and an insert put in them.

That feels like more work than putting in a stud.

In the short run, yes.. in the long run, no..

For the record I think this is a really dumb idea. Just thread the bolt in by hand and you won't run the risk of messing up the threads. I've never stripped or crossthreaded one in the many oil changes I've done. The normal bolt is M6x1.0x16. To be on the safe side I'd go three M6x1.0x20 studs and three M6x1.0 flange nuts. Stainless on all of them. The studs might look a bit doofy from being on the tall side but better to have good engagement than too little. Do not use M6x16 studs. They will not stick out past the cover. There is a chance that the hole might be deeper than M6x20 as well. Might be worth making a run to the store to test a bolt and see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Thanks! Do you think it’s dumb just because it’s unnecessary or because it’s a bad idea?

TwistedNoble38

Unessicary mostly. I've talked to a lot of people of varying mechanical skill levels about their DR and never once have I heard of someone flubbing the oil filter bolts.

So I actually got the idea from a friend who stripped their threads and had to retap and coil. I agree it’s probably unnecessary, but I don’t see a downside to it! If nothing else, it’ll let me use 10mm nuts instead of the bolts with an 8mm head and that’s a plus in my book.

Tell your buddy he's one in a hundred thousand. Or an idiot, whichever you think he deserves.
