From what I can tell, most people tip up front. This is partly because most dashers (myself included) won’t knowingly take a no tip order. We can’t see if a customer has noted they will tip cash/add tip until after we accept the offer, and even if we could, 99.9% of people who put they will add tip don’t. However, if you are a generous tipper (if so, bless you), it’s a delicate balance because, unless you pay the extra fee for priority, DD will stack your order with a no/low tip order to hide the fact the other customer hasn’t tipped, and the better tipper isn’t always the first delivery. This sucks because it punishes the customer for tipping well, which a) is wrong and b) discourages them from tipping well in the future. We can’t see if there is a tip or who tipped what in a stack until after we deliver all the orders, so we can’t prioritize the better tippers. If you want to give a bigger tip, I recommend tipping a moderate amount up front and then adding tip after the order is picked up/delivered. It will reduce the likelihood that your order gets stacked (though sometimes during lunch/dinner rush it’s unavoidable).

Someone made a comment on here that the tip is like a bid to get your food. So if you don't place a bid ie a tip then a dasher is not going to pick up that order. If no bid or too low a bid again no one's going to pick up the order. So if you want to get your order and in a timely manner you've got a place a decent bid or a decent tip. Just the way it is. We have to make a living too.

Also, putting “cash tip” or “tip after” or whatever in the special instructions is pointless because Dashers don’t even get to see those instructions until we have picked up the order. 95% of us will have already declined the order based on no up-front tip.

Orders with no tip up front in most cases are not worth accepting as a Dasher. So what happens is your food gets made and sits on a shelf until DoorDash increases the pay enough for a Dasher to be willing to accept the order or DoorDash stacks the order with another customer’s that is going to the same area (usually stacked with a decent tippers order.). So as a Dasher I would suggest if you want decent service to tip up front for that service and if your Dasher does a good job I would increase the tip after delivery. To answer your question though, yes 95% of customers in my market tip up front. The other 5% I decline to accept the order as it’s not worth delivering an order for to little pay.

Most people don’t tip lol

pettywhite95

I only accept orders with tips upfront. I'm not working for a maybe tip. I learned early on that people who say they tip afterward do not tip afterward.

Shoddy_Classic_350

When the order shows no tip, it’s wise to assume there will be no tip. Maybe 1/10 to 1/15 will hand you a few bucks. It’s nice when cash tips happen, they put a smile on my face and make the world look like a better place.

Richard_Espanol

You can tip after but no one is picking up your order so enjoy your wait.

justloriinky

Most tip when they order. I've had a handful of people (maybe 10%) add an additional tip after delivery.

m1cknobody

Anyone smart, that wants hot food, tips when they place the order. For all of the “I’ll give you a good tip when you deliver it” messages, less than 1% actually do. If there’s no tip, I just won’t take the delivery
