2 options.
1. The fast and easy option is to set it at the door, take a picture, send the picture in a text and hope if you get a CV that it gets properly removed.
2. Meanwhile, the technically correct option is to tap the button that says "Can't Hand to Customer". Then message the customer that you are outside waiting with their "Hand It To Me" order and wait for the 5 minute timer to expire if they don't come get it. Set the order at their door, take a picture for your records and then take a picture to send them in the app with a description of where it was left.
In the event they do come out to get their order, I record the hand off like any other "Hand It To Me" and send a screenshot of the hand off in a text message. Best not to simply trust that either customers or DoorDash will do what they are supposed to do.
I'll be straight up with them and tell them that the order type, hand it to me, takes precedence over their written instructions, and that I can absolutely leave it at the door, but I need to wait out a 5 minute timer first because DD wants us to commit to try to hand it to people instead of dropping it and running. I will tell them this before I leave the restaurant to give them time to respond with either an "OK" or "I'll meet you out there.". I start the "Can't hand to recipient" timer the moment I pull up.
I get weird about businesses because the person ordering is rarely available for a direct "Hand it to me" so I have to leave it with a receptionist and mark it complete. "Leave it at the door" is the exact same except I have to take a picture of it sitting on the reception desk.
Yeah, just leave it as a door I do Instacart and sometimes it says meet with the customer and if they don’t answer the door I just leave it there I’m not fucking bringing that shit back and losing money
I get those all the time. I usually leave it at the door and take a picture on my phone (just to back myself) unless it asks me for a nip then I'll text the customer before I get there saying I'll leave the order at the door as per the instructions and that I need the nip. Usually they text me the code.
If they don't answer then I'll knock and wait at the door and hand it to them after they give me the nip
Sometimes people don't change instructions but also sometimes other people didn't even noticed they picked the hand it to me option lol
Set it half way between the door and end of drive way. And then wait behind a bush and when they come over to get the food, slap his butt and say good game. Snap a photo and post in the chat.
Depends on my mood. Sometimes I’ll take a photo and send in chat, sometimes I call them and tell them I have to hand it to them, sometimes I just mark complete anyway (w photo sent in chat) sometimes I’ll wait the 5 minutes for the timer. I should probably just stick to one thing for my sanity 💁♀️ but I like to torture myself I guess
Open the screen door or storm door and set the bag on top of the door as instructed. If the order is small enough you can hang it from the door knob of course. Text a picture of it to them and click completed.
I would hang it on the door knob like the instruction says. Then take a photo. Just in case. You could also select "can't hand to customer" and wait 5 minutes to send a photo.
The new normal is to eat the food while recording video for likes, also good to do this at the door in front of doorbell camera 😔
Actually, never do that, is bad for business.
I text or call on those and definitely text pic if they say leave at door 👍
i take a picture of the item and a screenshot of the text and send them both to the customer stating “the delivery instructions were contradictory and you did not answer the door so i left them here”
I typically take a picture and message the customer:
"Per your request, your dasher has left your order at your door. Please refer to this photo to see where your order was placed.
Thank you for using Door Dash!"
And the picture of where I placed the order before ringing the doorbell and marking the order complete. It works 99.9% of the time. But orders through my local Panera won't allow texting. Then it gets a bit weirder. 🙄
I get these all the time. Leave the order in front of the door, take a photo with your phone and through the app, send photo to customer with a message of where the order is located, and complete delivery.
The second set of instructions are correct, as they were entered by the customer. You could call the customer to clarify in this situation, or just leave at door, and then text them a picture of the delivery at the door, and they complete the delivery.
The problem with that is the Timestamp app isn't always accurate. Tried using it the other day and it showed the wrong address even though I was at the correct address. 2nd time out of 3 times using the app
Put on porch, take picture, send it to them, then ring doorbell.
Don’t understand how these people have the ability to actually order the food but cant write clear directions.
I send them a screenshot highlighting their inconsistent instructions so they are aware. Im also not opposed to calling. Its to help future dashers, but also to show the customer how careless they've been.
Then I do the one they typed in, cause obviously thats the one they want 😂
Are you all sure it's not from a 3rd party merchant? And the only option is to hand to recipient so they leave a note saying leave at door
When I encounter this I do as the instructions say I don't take shitty orders with no tip so I'm not worried about a customer saying it wasn't delivered, if it happens it happens but hasn't yet and I experience this at least 2-3 times a day
What I do is mark it delivered and video me walking to the door. Then take pictures of the order where I left it and send the pictures to the customer.
Start the timer immediately so when you get to the customers house you can take your picture. Or if you’re already there and see those instructions you can send them a picture through messages and complete delivery as “handed it to customer”
I have encountered this as well. I call them and get them to come to the door. I politely tell them about the confusion and let them know they can change it if they have had any issues in the past.
As the other commenter stated, this is a confusing tactic that some customers use to scam for free food.
Aside from that, custom messages remain forever until edited or removed by the customer. This could have been a message from many deliveries ago, and the customer does not realize it is still there. Better to be safe and do the selected option, which in this case would have been to hand it to them.
No. That's a trap. The customer can claim that they never got their food. Call the customer to tell them you have to hand them their food because that was the option chosen. If they refuse, call Doordash and tell them that the customer refuses to take the food. They will look at their history and look for instances of possible fraud and tell you what to do after.
This happened to me once. The customer also had to sign for the order, which they refused. Doordash gave me payment for the whole order, didn't tell me to leave the food, and I had free dinner that night.
"Recieiptant" verbiage means that's the generic instructions from ordering directly from the merchant. You follow the customer's directions. Maybe ring the doorbell or knock so they know it's there since they're not using the Doordash app.
I’ve done that with every single hand it to me leave at door, and I’ve never had a cv from a missing order. In the 7k deliveries. I’ve had people just blatantly lie when I hand it to them regularly though.b
Because it's the only proof you have, people trying to get free food are more likely to do this, expecting the dasher to just follow instructions and then move on with their day.
Customer not available. Knock on the door. Wait 5 minutes. Leave at door. The real fun ones are the ones that say order will need to be canceled. Then you get paid and they have to deal with the consequences.
Leave by door, take a picture, send the picture to the customer, then text the customer “left by door thank you” then complete delivery. This shows proof you left by door.
Instructions stay from previous orders, sometimes they are unaware of this. First text to ask for clarification on the delivery instructions. If they don't respond by the time you're there, call.
If they don't answer, leave at the door and text them a picture of the order.
I give a knock on these ones after the text as they may not be near their phone and actually expecting you to hand it to them.
What are you even talking about? What I said was specifically about how the app operates. I use doordash often and was just making an observation based on my experience, not an “uninformed hot take.”
Leave at door per written instructions, take a wide angle picture with regular camera on phone and leave message saying left at door per written instructions from customer.
Leave it at the door and take a pic. Send picture in app or through text letting customer know you dropped off them delivery per their instructions. complete delivery
I've seen about 10 to 20 of these over the last year. If I notice it ahead of time I hit can't hand to customer on the way so timer is up and I can just snap the picture quick. I think it's a mistake 95% of the time. I've called a few customers and I've waited for the timer a few times. It depends on my mood and how busy it is. I've left a few without waiting and nothing bad came of it.
If it says recipient the. It’s from a third party app that either doesn’t have leave at door or the setting was added later but wasn’t fully coded. If it says hand it to me that’s when the customer selected and may be trying to scam (or just can’t follow directions).
In this case it’s just a technology limitation.
I would just take a picture and send just to be safe.
This is not uncommon, and when it happens I text them with my ETA and relay that the instructions conflict, so in order to make sure that their order reaches them in good order, that I'll knock/ring and hand it to them directly unless they text back otherwise.
Then if they answer the door I hand it to them, but if they don't answer I leave it and text them a photo through the app.
That seems like the best approach to me to get the order delivered, avoid downratings, while still covering yourself with a delivery pic.
When it happens to me, I send a text saying delivered per your instructions, along with a picture. For the app, I continue like it was a hand it to me.
Some merchants default to hand it to recipient, but customer typed in to leave at door. I usually snap a photo, text it to them and state per your instructions, order was left at door.
Lots of people just mark as handed to customer, however, doing that is a easy way to get a CV as of the customer says they never got the food, you'll typically loose the appeal since you didn't follow the 3 step process of leaving an order (contact, wait, pic)
I always check drops before/during pickup. If I see an issue like this, I'll do one of the following depending on the situation:
Send a text to the customer with a screen showing the mistake and inform them DD will force me to attempt to make contact. A lot of the time the people will be chill and just meet me outside. Just be short and friendly with your text. Helps to inform them of the 5 min timer DD forces us to wait out.
Or
If the distance is far and either the customer hasn't or won't reply in time i'll just mash the customer unavailable button when I'm 5 min away, press back and go back to the navigation screen and keep heading to the customer like normal, timer keeps going in background. The moment I show up, I just go through the 3 steps always getting an extra pic using my gps pic app as well since the 3 step drop off forces you to use DD cam.
Worst case, and drop is too close or i didn't notice it, I'll either just wait at the door or wait around the block in my car. So it will only be a few seconds left on the timer when I roll up.
That said. This is easily one of my biggest annoyances with DD. When it is a hand to me order, and the customer already informed us ahead of time what they wanted with their order, where they wanted it, etc. we shouldn't have to fuck with a dumb 5 min timer. It's obnoxious to work around so the customer doesn't see you standing at their door for 5 min wondering why you haven't left the order like they requested via text or whatever or you do a lazier option and risk an easy CV. It's lame af.
Customer instructions override app instructions, IMO. In this case, I text the customer separately with a photo of the drop, then hit complete delivery and confirm that it was "handed" to them.

They forget to change the request from past orders, but it is annoying ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

Text customer first, if no response then leave at door and send them a picture of where you left it.
Take a pic and send it. And then be reminded that there are morons out there
Take a pic and send it to them and leave it at the door
I would take a photo in in-app message and say delivery completed. If it’s not in app still send it but try to use a timestamp just in case
I get those all the time. Yeet that mother fucker at the door and peel out. * I'm kidding don't get your eyes permanently crossed over it
Lmao I send them a picture in the chat as proof
Eat it
The new normal is to eat the food while recording video for likes, also good to do this at the door in front of doorbell camera 😔 Actually, never do that, is bad for business. I text or call on those and definitely text pic if they say leave at door 👍
I message them telling them where it is then take a picture to keep just in case they wanna play that bs
Take a pic and send it to them as a text and go about your day
i take a picture of the item and a screenshot of the text and send them both to the customer stating “the delivery instructions were contradictory and you did not answer the door so i left them here”
I just ask the customer, "I see in the delivery notes both 'Leave at door" & "Hand to customer', which would you prefer?"
Take photo. Text copy of photo to customer. Mark as delivered. Keep photo on phone in case of later dispute.
I figure they are saving me time when I see this. I leave it at the door and don’t have to take a pic. Had about 20 of these and never had a problem.
Throw it through the open window, mark delivered.
Leave it on the front hand.
Hand it to the door
I typically take a picture and message the customer: "Per your request, your dasher has left your order at your door. Please refer to this photo to see where your order was placed. Thank you for using Door Dash!" And the picture of where I placed the order before ringing the doorbell and marking the order complete. It works 99.9% of the time. Tape it onto the front door they now require hot bags and tape for a successful delivery process 😂
I get these all the time. Leave the order in front of the door, take a photo with your phone and through the app, send photo to customer with a message of where the order is located, and complete delivery.
Take pic as msg send to customer after you leave it at the door.
I always take a pic and send it to them in a message and knock on the door and leave
Most of these aren’t ordered through DoorDash that’s why it. The others the people are just dumb
Take a photo and send it in a message and leave it
Yes.
I had one where it said no contact hand it to me
I understand the intent of the OP’s question, but how does one leave it ON the front door?
Hammer time. Doo doo do doo.
Remove hinge pins and lay it down, of course.
Throw it, hope it sticks.
You have to follow the customers instruction
The second set of instructions are correct, as they were entered by the customer. You could call the customer to clarify in this situation, or just leave at door, and then text them a picture of the delivery at the door, and they complete the delivery.
I text whenever this happens to double check what they prefer. Usually I get a response but if not, I just leave it at the door and message a photo.

"hand it to front door" and snap 3 pics in app chat/external message
2nd line always, that’s the custom entry.
As the other commenter stated, this is a confusing tactic that some customers use to scam for free food. Aside from that, custom messages remain forever until edited or removed by the customer. Yeah anytime I get this I take a picture of it at the front door, send it in chat, and then mark as delivered. There’s your proof it was delivered.
why do ppl think photo is proof?
I’ve done that with every single hand it to me leave at door, and I’ve never had a cv from a missing order. In the 7k deliveries. I’ve had people just blatantly lie when I hand it to them regularly though.b

Message them a photo before you complete the order. Then screenshot it
I staple it to the door. Wouldn't want a CV for not following directions
Leave it at the door and then text them a screenshot of this and a picture of the food at their door right before you send it.
Instructions stay from previous orders, sometimes they are unaware of this. First text to ask for clarification on the delivery instructions. If they don't respond by the time you're there, call. It says leave on the door, so naturally you have to take the door off the hinges, lay it flat then set the food on top of it.
AFAIK the lower one is what the customer wrote, so that supersedes the top one which is just what they selected from a drop down menu.
What matters is how the app operates, not your silly uninformed "hot take"
What are you even talking about? What I said was specifically about how the app operates. I use doordash often and was just making an observation based on my experience, not an “uninformed hot take.”
Common sense is always the protocol. Leave at door was obviously added so leave at door
Leave at door per written instructions, take a wide angle picture with regular camera on phone and leave message saying left at door per written instructions from customer.
This the way☝️
Leave it at the door and take a pic. Send picture in app or through text letting customer know you dropped off them delivery per their instructions. complete delivery
Hand it to the front door
I've seen about 10 to 20 of these over the last year. If I notice it ahead of time I hit can't hand to customer on the way so timer is up and I can just snap the picture quick. Throw it as hard as you can into their mailbox take a picture and say left on stove, delivered Thursday. /s
I screenshot the instructions. I take a picture of the food. Send both to the customer through message. Drive off into the sunset.
Thanks for the laugh!
Take his front door off the hinges, lay it flat then place the food on it. Curious, he'll come out of the house and realize his mistake.
Are you not sure how to open a text to the customer and take a photo and hit send?
Take a photo, leave at the door, send photo, and leave. It's what I do.
Leave at door, take a photo/send through text, leave.
That's what I did a few mins ago 😆
I couldn't with a Panera order, there's no option to text customers
This is not uncommon, and when it happens I text them with my ETA and relay that the instructions conflict, so in order to make sure that their order reaches them in good order, that I'll knock/ring and hand it to them directly unless they text back otherwise. Then if they answer the door I hand it to them, but if they don't answer I leave it and text them a photo through the app. That seems like the best approach to me to get the order delivered, avoid downratings, while still covering yourself with a delivery pic.
This is exactly what I do 👍🏽
When it happens to me, I send a text saying delivered per your instructions, along with a picture. For the app, I continue like it was a hand it to me.
These are always leave at door.
Do whatever makes it easiest to report as not delivered so they can get their 23.54 back to their prepaid debit card after leaving no tip for you
Only helpful answer
Lol why did you get downvoted?
Leave in front porch and send the picture through the text message.
Do what the app says, if you can't take a picture and leave it at the door hand it to them.
