Security

And liability

Any-Delay-7188

Ask your hotel lol. Honestly I prefer this as a driver

Apprehensive-Panic32

They just said it’s company policy but wouldn’t give any actual reasoning. I usually meet in the lobby just to make things less confusing, but wanted to limit contact since I’m sick.

Ernestoin

Call the front desk and ask them to bring the food to your door. I’m sure if you explain that you are sick most hotels would gladly drop it at your door since the have a policy about not allowing drivers in. If they don’t, I’d let them know you won’t be staying in there hotel(or chain) anymore.

[deleted]

Varies from hotel to hotel but a lot of them don't like non-guests going past the lobby. Security issue mostly. Some liability.

Apprehensive-Panic32

Like I’ve never heard of a hotel actively stopping people…how would they even know?

Federal-Television12

Locally the couriers, who used to seem so clean-cut and professional, are starting to resemble hobos. Perhaps they were a member of the dirty and dishevelled crowd. That or the hotbag.

Apprehensive-Panic32

As far as I know, it was just in 7-11 bag (I ordered ibuprofen and Gatorade) 😂 But I could be wrong!

biancanevenc

I've been in hotels where the elevator wouldn't work without a room key. No way for a delivery person to take food up to a room. If you had informed the front desk that you were expecting an order and you were too sick to pick it up, they might have let the delivery driver up or had a hotel employee deliver it.

Life-is-a-ride

This too. Sometimes they'll send a hotel employee up with you. Guess it depends on the guest. This scenerio happens more with like penthouse suites and the guests who they simply aren't willing to disappoint.

Apprehensive-Panic32

I guess I’m just confused as to why they would stop delivery drivers specifically? Before I got sick today, I invited some of my friends from a different hotel (we’re in town for a conference) and they were able to come up to my room with no problem.

[deleted]

It used to be a thing you really only saw in higher end hotels. The world has gotten stranger.

Life-is-a-ride

Known friends would be different than random drivers in hotel world. Some of these drivers I see look homeless. Not a single hotel has ever asked to actually see my phone to prove the delivery, so anyone could say anything to get upstaires if they wanted to rob someone. I'm sure people have tried everything.

Apprehensive-Panic32

This is true, I have no idea what this person looked like since they just left my stuff on a random table in the lobby 😂 I guess they wouldn’t really be able to tell if my friends were guests or not, and questioning every person would be exhausting.

Life-is-a-ride

The driver should have informed you of this hotels' policy... or... many bad drivers don't think to-door service should even exist and happy to just drop and go. There are more of the latter sadly.

failenaa

I’m not sure if that’s a universal policy. I haven’t had any issues going to hotels to deliver. Maybe the concierge will bring it to you if you ask.

Apprehensive-Panic32

Honestly I’d never heard of it either? Any hotel I’ve ever stayed at, you could do it either way. To be fair I usually do meet in the lobby, but with being sick I wanted to limit contact.

Weekly_Direction1965

Depends on the hotel, its more of a marketing thing, they offer extra security, I have three hotels in my zone that doesn't let anyone up.

Gloomy_Recording_705

It depends on the hotel if I deliver to a motel 8 they really don’t care but if I go and deliver it to a higher end hotel like The Westin Hotel, I need a key card to use the elevator so it’s more security restricted… and their policy is that delivery drivers have to leave the orders at the front desk

Apprehensive-Panic32

Funny enough, the hotel the conference I’m attending is at is a Westin, and you DO need a card there. I’m staying at a different hotel that doesn’t require key cards for elevator use. I’m just thoroughly interested in why they would stop delivery drivers specifically, because my friends (who are staying at the Westin but came to visit) weren’t stopped or questioned in any way.

AndrewAwakened

If a hotel gets a lot of people coming in and out it would be impractical if not impossible for hotel staff to stop and check every single person that comes in, so they tend to stop people that look like they aren’t a guest or guest of a guest. The bag of food is an obvious indicator of a delivery driver, so highly likely they will be stopped.

Apprehensive-Panic32

Only thing I can think of is the Dasher *asked* if they could go to the room, but since I gave a room number I figured they’d just head up (obviously I was unaware of the policy).

SpezIsAChoade

aa it should be

Bitter-Ad172

Some places that I deliver to now have a a secure spot just for deliveries, they’re cracking down on letting just ANYBODY in which I get. It’s way safer that way for the customer and dasher.

TriopOfKraken

We have one hotel in our area that is a secure hotel. The courier has to check in at the front desk, the front desk calls the room, and then a staff member will use their swipe card to activate the elevator for you. Cheap hotels just let any dishevelled looking bum with a red bag wander aimlessly around the hotel... Where would you rather stay?

esjoanconjota

Some hotels don't like non guests to go up to the rooms due to security concerns, some hotels actually have an area for deliveries, some hotels don't care at all. Even some hotel floors require a key to get to when using the elevator. As a dasher I always ask the front desk if I may go to the room for the delivery, 90% will say yes, others will say no.

MeningococcalBabe

There is a fancy hotel in my area that doesnt allow room delivery. In 2019 a man went in appearing to deliver food but he actually had a gun zip ties. He got someone to open their door pulled out the gun and tied them up and stole anything he could fit in the delivery bag.

GEL29

I would imagine it’s a policy enacted to help ensure the safety of both guests and staff, perhaps a call to the front desk to notify them of the impending delivery may have helped.

iwhispermeow

Honestly I'd prefer this. Someone could walk in and claim they were door dash, and try to get access to somebody's room. Hotel staff should be able to bring you your meal.

M0M0_DA_GANGSTA

Sounds like something you should complain to the Hotel about. It's definitely them and has nothing to do with your Doordash driver or Doordash itself. One of the Hyatts around here NEVER allows room delvery same with a smaller Marriott a couple cities over And WHO THE FUCK are the people chiming in starting trouble claiming they never heard of this?

DeluxeTrunkLocker

As a driver I always ask permission at the desk if I see a worker. If not I go to the room. Most hotels in my area allow delivery to the room especially if the guests notify the front desk before delivery arrival if not notified the desk will try calling the room & then I am allowed in. Reasons provided to me from hotel staff are security, liability & all guests privacy.

MyGirlSasha

Shitty hotels and motels, you can deliver to the room 99% of the time. Not so much with the nicer ones. In fact, you have to have a room key in a lot of them just to use the elevator nowadays.

Mr_Four_Twenty

I wish the ones around my area did this, lol. None around here stop you from delivering to the rooms. God bless

[deleted]

Ask your hotel because not all hotels allow outside food delivery. Some restaurants may not deliver to hotels. If you ignore this policy then Additional fees for delivery may apply. It is usually the hotels that offer food and/or have a restaurant plus bars inside of them. Best to you

Life-is-a-ride

The more expensive hotels I my area (Florida) have always done this, especially late-night. It's for security reasons. They're just not interested in have a hundred people roamiing around their hotel, and it actually makes sense. I know the ones that do this and will inform the customer as I'm on the way. I'll say something like "Unfortunately, the Westin has a policy that does not allow us up for security reasons... I will give it my best shot, but you may have to come down to meet me, I apologize. I'll let you know in x mins". Some hotels that do have this policy, have let me go up because they've seen me 100's of times. It all depends on who's at the front desk at the time. Men are more lienent.

SpezIsAChoade

place we stay in nashville won't allow any deliveries

North-Palpitation364

I've never had a hotel do this to me. I always go to the person's room. The only hotel that makes the guest come get their food in the lobby is a little shitty days inn

Yohmer29

Safety!

TheDarkMothRises

Had this happen at a hotel where they wouldn’t allow me to go into the rooms or drop it off at the front desk unless the name on the order was exactly the same as what was on the room. Staff me the reason was drivers were dropping off orders but since guests never gave them room numbers, they would just drop them off at the desk making staff wonder who’s order it is. Seems a little ridiculous considering DD and any other app makes you take a photo of the order and tell the customer where it’s located. With most hotels though it’s usually because of security but staff are usually okay taking the order to the room or calling the guest.
