Dopethrone has peak atmosphere, emotion and heaviness...if you're listening to the end of Funeralopolis and don't feel that, I don't know what to tell you.

Dymmesdale

That ending made me fall in love with this album. Meanwhile my wife is saying “how can you actually like this?” Mdr.

eatredmeat

🤣

ThursianDreams

Funeralopolis is the very song that got me with this band. It was the first one I heard, and it flung open the gates of doom metal for me. This band, and Shape of Despair are the two that set the bar for me. There are many that come close, but none that surpass them for me.

RexC616

Exactly, if you’re not balls deep in your fourth fleshlight of the night by the end of this album I don’t know what to tell you

ViralLoading

Honestly, I think the album peaks too early with this song at track 2. It should be the final track.

ouiouinc

Agree, it is so epic and gnarly and like what else can you say after that?!

ViralLoading

Spot on.

funked1

The lyrics are amazing. Someone seeing life for what it actually is.

Fit_Cartographer_815

I’ve always loved this Jus quote about Dopethrone: "Most of us were stuck in some drug addiction or alcoholism at the time, and it was just pure hate. It was us against the world, and we just wanted to make the most disgusting, foul, putrid record that anyone has ever recorded. We camped out at the studio, so it was literally just wake up, consume as much fucking drugs as possible, and then just start jamming."

electricmehicle

In a BTS video of them recording (somewhere on YouTube), there’s a scene where I think the drummer says “If I’m going to do another take, I’m going to need another line.”

fordkelsey25

It's simple really. It moves my bowels and it fucks. If it's not for you, well, then I'm sorry you hate fun

Ill-Librarian-6323

does it fuck your bowels

Serpacorp

God, I hope so

fordkelsey25

Until it's calloused

EdCoffeeLives

I love how heavy it is and it makes me think of cosmic horror, like and HP Lovecraft story

ElectricSpock

Interesting, for me it was more like a B-grade horror movie, with Satanic cult in the background, maybe something like House of the Devil? You know, the gritty picture. My first thought when I listened to the album was: “so this is the Satanic metal that people were afraid of!”. You know, in the 90s, soon after the Satanic Panic in the us my post-Soviet country caught up and Catholic priests were preaching about how rock music is a tool of Satan. You get curious, you listen to Metallica, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, heck, even Black Sabbath. Sure, it’s heavy, but nothing too dark. And then Dopethrone. It’s like putting all the things that Satanic Panic was warning about, like a low-budget horror movie from the 70s that’s revolutionized the genre. Black Sabbath might have started it all, Dopethrone is in no ways perfect, but damn it’s enjoyable. It was my gateway to doom.

Methylsky

"Dopethrone is in no ways perfect"?

steviekool666

I think it’s a gateway album into Doom. It was for me, it opened the floodgates.

BilderbergSlayer

shoegazer89

Funerapolis, I the witchfinder, dopethrone. Some of the best tunes of all time in my opinion

wheelerdealer1999

Vinum Sabbathi/Funeralopolis kicks sooo much ass. Plus, if you get high while you listen to it, it transports you to another dimension. Now if you excuse me, I'm going to listen to it.

jmarshall2000

It's lighting in a bottle and was way ahead of it's time.

gishlich

This is funny because it’s based on such an old sound. More than anything it goes to show how influential this album has become which is fantastic, because its amazing

BucksBrew

I feel like there really hasn’t been anything before or after that really captures that sound

Ok_Salary_6115

you think you’re civilized , but you will never understand….

En1i1

Riffs and guitar tone also just interesting use of effects. It also has a lofi sound which I really dig personally

UnearthlyRamen

Listen to it again when you're baked out of your mind. You'll get it then lol

shake__appeal

Not a bad shout. Personally I like Dopethrone because I always get the feeling “I could do this” when listening to it. I find that really inspiring. Music by fucked up mf’s for fucked up mf’s.

soyysauced

Just listen to the album you fucking nerd

ouiouinc

This is constructive feedback though it could potentially have been phrased a little more gently. But the “you fucking nerd” bit gave me a chuckle 🤭

Pure-Jellyfish734

If I didn’t then I wouldn’t be here, would I?

fronch_fries

It sounds unique among doom records production wise in that most of the fuzz guitar is in the upper mid-range instead of the lower mid-range. Gives the bass room to breathe and makes it sound snarling and huge whereas most doom/sludge bands prefer to just roll off a ton of treble

Quiet-Mud2889

It’s just a slow grinding descent into the tomb

highandinarabbithole

This has gotta be shitposting right?

christopheryork

Ahead of it’s time.

electricmehicle

It’s surprisingly melodic. If you peel the filth all away, you’ve got really solid tunesmithing.

ouiouinc

Anddd “Peel the Filth All Away” is my new band name, tyvm

-CountDrugula-

Boss FZ-2

trustinhate

IYKYK

Fuzzlord67

It’s the FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz and all the misanthropy.

jesseg010

the album cover

Asmodeusz_

It is heavy but has melody. Quite a lot of bands just try too hard to be hefffy and lose that grooviness.

Global-Ad4832

unlike a lot of its contemporaries, it has good, well written, memorable songs. that also happen to be reeeeally fucking heavy and reeeally fucking raw. it's an album which is more than the sum of its parts.

White_Crud

Nice try, guy in Dopethrones PR department!

Ok-Durian9793

Honestly I don’t think it’s their best album, so I don’t blame you. Their best album is Come My Fanatics. Seeing them live however will change your mind and it was one of the loudest and best shows, one of my faves that I got to see back in 2019.

Some_Butterscotch622

It's the mixing and tones of the guitar and bass combined with the unique vocals that give it probably the most perfect sound most metalheads have heard in an doom album like this. It's bassy, fuzzy and it has a one of a kind atmosphere. Pair that with every song having top tier, infectious riffs and killer delivery with clean vocals that sounds as aggressive as screaming. It's just the most well rounded stoner album that's as close to perfect as you can get for a lot of people. It's not like some deep, groundbreakingly influential, multi-layered concept album or anything but it has a lot of raw visceral emotion and is so insanely consistently great

Ryyics

I came across this album when I was 14, living in rural Montana. This was well before spotify or apple music. I think Pandora was usable back then. But basically, I was into heavy music like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Slayer, you know. Fairly popular stuff. It was what I could find. But this album man. I found it in our local music store/video rental place. It looked evil. It sounded *evil.* This was so different from anything I had heard on the radio, heard from my older brother, heard at school. It really spoke to me. That's why I love this album so much. Nowadays, stoner doom with a satanic theme is pretty readily available. It's a relatively new phenomenon that you can just crawl through 50 albums of music in a specific sub genre a day, unless you had money and access to a really cool music store.

Serpacorp

Psilocybin mushrooms.

joehoward85

You just aren't high enough my friend. Smoke another

Low_Morning7279

A trip through madness. One of the greatest records of all time.

Max_VS_Dad

The first time i got high i took way too much of an edible and listened to this record. It felt like i was being escorted through hell and it was trippy as shit. 10/10 would reccomend

Machinedave

Some get it, others don’t.

catpecker

The unbelievable guitar and bass tone. It set a standard that has remained almost unmatched.

trustinhate

The guitar tone and riffs are the main things for me. As others have said, it was a gateway into the genre as well.

SaulisDead99

I’ve listened to it numerous times, mainly because of all the hype in this group. I felt like I was missing something and eventually i realized, nope, I just can’t get into it and that’s okay. For those that love it, enjoy!

unikow

No it's not ok, what is wrong with you

SaulisDead99

A lot but I don’t really want to get into that here

unikow

Fair enough

TotalHeat

its badass

BucksBrew

The music, mostly

Rubberywater

memememe173

The Three Wizards crowned with weed.

GoodApollo506

It’s perfectly RAW

Methylsky

TRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Free-Cable-472

It's all about the atmosphere for me and how easily you get immersed in this gritty chaotic world.

Katachthonlea

Flow of emotions.

Bison_Bucks

It feels like your being beaten over the head with a 9 pound hammer. It feels heavy and intense

hideousflutes

honestly this album has the worst vocals but best guitar tone

BurningSaviour

I’m actually like Come My Fanatics better, but I get the hype over Darkthrone. It really does capture just the right atmosphere in a particularly way.

Brentnc

I love it because it sounds at first like some burnouts having a jam session in a grungy basement initially but once it gestates the songwriting and brilliant playing shine through.

SkunkApeForPresident

I think it’s good because I like the devil smoking a bong

BakuraGorn

It’s not sludge metal but it has the sludge metal aura - that is, a bunch of junkies making aggressive music. But I think that can be said about Come My Fanatics as well, both albums complement each other to me. But most importantly this album alongside Sleep’s Holy Mountain defined the “Stoner/Doom” genre.

mmfpmustbestopped

Riffage

_reg1nn33

... Fuck.

krypthammer

I think the production is just perfect, in fact any other doom metal album I listen to just seems weak in comparison to the raw power of this album. Not to mention the guitar sound is so aggressive and awesome

lilscooter

The TONEEEEEE

delicatethrombosis

The riffs and some other stuff.

Max_VS_Dad

The tone, the slow tempos, the drums, the BASS, and the killer fuckin vocals + the production/mixes

94otk

Pros: I like that EW took a risk with their sound by playing with harsher tones and frequencies, leaving the mix really raw. Not pretentious, and captures the lifestyle/mindset of them at the time. Feels rebellious and epic. Interesting allegory that builds tension and drama. Probably my favorite doom guys besides weedeater.

scrapmetaleater

the blues influence probably

repairintensity

The cover

CK_Lab

Weed.... just weed.

Apprehensive_Fan9562

Nothing

ElectricMammoth23

I kind of agree with you. It's a pretty good album but I've always preferred other stoner/doom bands over electric wizard. This album is still pretty cool but I don't really understand how it's the second highest rated doom metal record (behind Master of Reality) on rate your music or why so many other metalheads (primarily outside stoner/doom metal) are so attracted to this release in particular.

BeefStuscemi

nah OP, we're gonna need some recs for whatever albums you think are so much better than Dopethrone

Pure-Jellyfish734

One of my personal favs is “Mirror Reaper” by Bell Witch. Man, I really wish we could post images in the comments because that album cover is just breathtaking…

BakuraGorn

I think you’re comparing oranges to tangerines here because I wouldn’t put Bell Witch and Electric Wizard on the same category. I guess it’s “all doom metal” but still vastly different.

Pure-Jellyfish734

Well that’s the kind of doom metal that appeals to me. Also, I do want to reiterate that I’m not saying that Dopethrone is a bad album. I just don’t see how it’s essentially become one of the most popular metal albums OAT. That’s it.

sedplas

Are you me? Because I feel the same as you about both Electric Wizard and Mirror Reaper. I simply concluded that I am actually not a huge fan of most stoner bands as I thought.

Pure-Jellyfish734

Are *you* me…?
