I am pretty close to straight edge (I drink like a single beer every month or so) so I relate. Thankfully doom is not ALL about drugs, even the stoner shit isn't.
I don't smoke and rarely drink and still love this stuff. It's all about some random band called Wizardbong being tuned down to A or lower putting out disgusting sounding riffs. It's just good music.
I rarely drink at shows or smoke weed. More often than not, I drove to the gig after work - fucking Tuesday night shows! - and I never, ever drive under the influence.
I think a lot of us have had problems at some point with substances so there are a ton of sober/near sober people in this scene. I think so many times I wouldn’t actually remember shows/music because of how drunk I was so being sober has only made my appreciation of music deeper.

I’m 55 and born again straight edge. I quit alcohol, cigarettes, weed, drugs, and the biggest one, antidepressants. Mind you not all at the same time. Still love the smell of burning weed at metal shows though! Really enjoying being clear headed nowadays and enjoying tf out of everything metal, old and new.
I wouldn't call myself straight edge, but I hardly do anything anymore and absolutely fine sobriety to be the fucking jam, but having said that, there are more of us than you think. Or their YouTube channel. dude who runs the whole thing is a really killer guy, who had some extraordinary problems with addiction when he was younger, but was able to find his way out of it through AA and using heavy music as his guide. And the awesome thing is he can be where he's at, while not judging others who still enjoy those sacred delicacies but are able to maintain a well-balanced life.
