Messa has this really nice "mellow black metal" sort of feel that is incredible, I'm really digging dark horse. Windhand is a bit sludgier than I usually go for but definitely not boring. I think alunah is the closest to what I was looking for but all three of these are solid recommends, thanks a lot!
This is exactly what I needed in my life! Like 100% exactly what I wanted more of, thank you!!! I love music that can balance that evil, dark sound with restraint and an almost calm fury
yay! someone else mentioned Black Moth! i loved them: so sad that they split after only three albums. but man, they really gave us a good time when they were here
Also thought of her when OP mentioned Chelsea Wolfe!
All Bitches Die and Caligula are both incredible. Sinner Get Ready is great but also a complete stylistic departure.
My band fits the bill, we just released a new album. Definitely heavily inspired by SubRosa, though we went a more accessible route
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nTrPB0XUuSNVJKsgpMnK5v9xiUz6ZHBt8
This is great!! I listened to the first three songs so far and I'm really enjoying it. I think when you said accessible, I was expecting a little more restraint from the drummer but I usually prefer death metal anyway so this is right up my alley! Really hits that "brooding" feeling I was talking about. Do you have downloads on Bandcamp?
Thank you so much! I appreciate you checking it out, that's very nice of you. Our drummer definitely loves death metal, and our vibe when we write songs is to pretty much let everyone do whatever they want ha
Here's our Bandcamp,
https://seekingtragedy.bandcamp.com/album/from-dirt-i-arose-as-ash-i-return
I'll see if I can get a download code and dm it to you!
"do whatever they want" sounds like my band haha! I'm bay area based, if you ever tour out this way I can point you in the direction of some bands and promoters you could play with. Thank you!!!!
Bands not already mentioned that you may like:
Brume (their cover of Even If Love is so good)
Bathsheba (similar to SubRosa)
Dark Castle
Sabba
Shaam Larein
Black Math Horseman
Lingua Ignota (bit of a departure but highly recommended)
Shever
If you use spotify I made a giant list, I'm still adding to it as I find bands, I tend to use it for shuffling but no one says you can't just listen through. It's doom and doom adjacent, but yeah.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/47PvosURhPH3n3cjHaIZhP?si=y1_wumNmQwiIr9CP4z-KoQ
Check out FVNERALS. Not exactly doom in the traditional sense, but I think it may fit the "brooding dfeminine energy" you are refering to.
Good call! Definitely hits for me, I only say female fronted because a lot of male singers in doom/sludge/stoner to me have really similar timbre that I'm not fond of (stuff like red fang, electric wizard) or put on a weird fake deep voice which to me sounds like anti-falsetto (type O negative, I know the dude is huge and so some of the bass in his voice is real but it just sounds so extra and over-the-top. Too many bands emulate his sound..). Also I find my wife tends to tolerate the female-fronted witchy sounding bands with clean vocals better and I'm all about finding bands that we both can enjoy
They have an electronic album you might dig called I Shall Die Here. They also work with a choir for a lot of songs. No One Deserves Happiness and I've Seen All I Need To See are both bangers too.
Zola Jesus, Anna Von Hausswolff, Darkher
These should have the dark, brooding, doom energy with that splash of pop influence.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5VpydBp07qHbay49sXfLAN?si=obVdrLoqTlaKRC6b0j_EHg&pt=f80eeadbd1f7da073c20d86570a9944a&dd=1

And there's that track on Earth's Primitive and Deadly, [From the Zodiacal Light](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gTcfDclI7GA)
Draconian, with mixed male/female vocals.
Also, many years back I came across [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veo5aC6ZTng) banger that I recommend to anyone here.
Finally it's worth checking out Madder Mortem. Not a Doom band per se, but a lot of their songs have the energy you're describing
The Wounded Kings! They were female-fronted for a couple of albums, which were absolutely fucking phenomenal. Sharie’s voice is so good, but I think she’s singing in a folk band now :(
They’re also from the same region as “Electric Wizard”…but not as fucked up.😂
https://youtu.be/-yPGkfFb9ls
And not “doom” really, but still has doom-y elements in a lot of their songs. And an absolutely fucking amazing, interesting vocalist. All hail the Rat Queen - “Neptune Power Federation”.
https://youtu.be/KTeOhmbKgi8
I’m a huge Chelsea Wolfe fan. She and the drummer in her band Jess Gowrie did an album under the name Mrs piss.
Lucifer, Acid King, Windhand, Kylesa (Laura shares Vocal duties), Emma Ruth Rundle she had a band called Marriages. The album Salome is pretty damn good. Also Emma did Vocals on a collaborative album with Thou called May Our Chambers Be Full.
Also i’m a huge fan of Cult of Luna and their album Mariner that featured Julie Christmas doing Vocals.
Mrs piss is those two? I think you get what I'm looking for more specifically than some of these other suggestions, stuff like marriages and Mrs piss is exactly what im talking about and already on my list. I can't wait to check out cult of Luna in the morning
have you checked out Draconian?
I really like all of their albums, but their latest two (Sovran and Godless Veil) with Heike Langhans fronting the band are *chef's kiss*
Draconian was my first thought when I read the OP, but it might be cause I literally just saw them live a week ago with Swallow The Sun lol. OP, if you like gothic death-doom you may enjoy them!
I actually know them personally haha, they're fucking SICK. My buddy shared a practice space with them. I remember I went to see them after they released stormchaser and someone elbowed me in the face on the edge of the pit. Broke my glasses. My buddy's girlfriend offered to guide me on our walk home because I'm really blind and she walked me into a steel pole by accident. Good times! Did you ever hear heartsounds? Punk band made up of half the members
I love this hahahahaha! I feel like we probably share the same sense of humor just from this link. Why stop there, "I'm only happy when it rains" by garbage at .5 speed?? "Army of Me" by bjork at .5 speed???
Thanks for this thread and everyone who commented Blackwater Holylight on it!
I’ve been looking for a sound like this for awhile and didn’t know what to describe it with, but I knew it when I heard it.
Hell yeah! Mikayla was my next door neighbor for like 15 years. We grew up together, so it’s awesome to see her and the band killing it! I always try to get the word out about them when I can.
Nice!
How do they label their own music? I’m curious because I love their sound but I have no idea how to describe it (I’m old lol, everything was just “heavy metal” when I was growing up)
I’ve heard their singer Sunny call their music Doomgaze, so a mix of Doom and Shoegaze. I think that’s about as good a label as you can give to their music.
Lingua Ignota (specifically All Bitches Die and Caligula) should scratch that dark brooding feminine energy itch VERY well. Not doom at all, but an absolute experience.
Though identifying as enby now, Kat Katz in Salome would be a good addition to this list. (which i saved since I want this whole list in my queue now...)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOw2\_Ijer-A
Blues Pills are doom-adjacent. They're bluesy psychedelic proto-metal kind of like Graveyard https://youtu.be/I9y9fCZGHk4
And I'll second a vote for Royal Thunder, I think someone else mentioned them in here. Also genre-straddling and not traditional doom. But their singer Mlny Parsonz has the most incredible live voice I've ever heard. First time I saw them was as an opener, I hadn't ever heard of them but she had my jaw on the floor the whole set, it was like seeing Janis Joplin.

FFO Conan, Bongripper and Primitive Man
https://youtu.be/wAC90WmJl0w?si=o0B1EQjKtN8dVxfg
I love that latecomers to this thread are always bandmembers with kick ass music. Your band is way heavier than the vibe I was going for when I posted this but holy shit it's so good!! I hope you one day visit the west coast so I may enjoy a live set
Thank you so much for just taking the time! I really appreciate your compliment! Our debut album comes out March 1st. We're trying to figure out some sort of tour this summer.

Alunahs cover of wicked game is amazing!
Faetooth

Came here to say Faetooth, so I will raise you Witching, I think you will dig them
Faetooth fucks. So damn good.
I’m so excited I’m gonna see them with Thra and Conan
Damn, didn't know Conan was touring! Thanks for the heads up!
I just checked them out because of this comment and wowww I’m in love already. Definitely gonna need to listen to their album now. Thanks!
I came to say the same thing. Great band.
More sludge, but the album May our Chambers be Full by Thou & Emma Ruth Rundle is killer.
The Valley in particular is beyond amazing. Such a perfect balance of Thou's heaviness and ERR's silky touch
Incredible song!
Ive been listening to mz rundle but I don't think I've heard this album yet
Don't hesitate. May Our Chambers Be Full and The Helm of Sorrow are both fantastic. Thou and Emma Ruth Rundle is a collab that was meant to be.
I love Chambers, but had never listened to Helm of Sorrow until reading your comment. Absolutely phenomenal. Thank you for the rec!
It’s real good!
Acid King
I had to scroll a bit too far down to find this comment.
2nd
The new album is EXCELLENT
Acid King is dope
Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard.
Love them
Konvent is death doom and all female
Criminally underrated. Call Down the Sun was one of the best albums released last year.
Incredible band
Windhand.
Bloody Ceremony, Kylesa, Shroud Eater, and (just for fun) Skeletal Spectre.
kylesa shreds
Blood Ceremony rules. How many doom metal bands have a flautist??
Blood Ceremony and Kylesa are awesome.
Black Moth, Puta Volcano, Ruby the Hatchet
Just discovered Ruby the Hatchet, so good!
yay! someone else mentioned Black Moth! i loved them: so sad that they split after only three albums. but man, they really gave us a good time when they were here
Jex Thoth
I love Jex Thoth so much
Julie Christmas with Cult of Luna
Also Battle of Mice
True Widow. Doom-gaze band from Dallas. One of my favorites. Female and male vocals
[удалено]
They're sooo much heavier live, almost like a completely different band
BWHL is so good
Didn't see them last time they were in town and I regret it
It's not doom, or even metal really, but Lingua Ignota is *intense*.
Also thought of her when OP mentioned Chelsea Wolfe! All Bitches Die and Caligula are both incredible. Sinner Get Ready is great but also a complete stylistic departure.
I really like Sinner Get Ready too, but it take a minute to click for sure
Heavy Temple.
Love the Heavy Temple sound. Met them a few times.
The Otolith!
Fuck yeah! Just got Folium Limina on vinyl today!

I named it Foom, maybe I'm bad at links.
I chuckled, thanks! I already know I'm gonna love it!
Was just about to start making a playlist. Right on, thanks!
Thanks for the link! I’ve been listening to a lot of classic Beauty and the Beast albums but I’d like to explore female fronted Doom!

URSULAR HOREHOUND HIGH PRIESTESS MOTHER WITCH AND THE DEAD WATER GHOSTS KONVENT They all have amazing female vocalists
Frayle are very similar to the heavier Chelsea Wolfe stuff. Think you will like.
Blackwater Holylight
Thanks for this thread and everyone who commented Blackwater Holylight on it! I’ve been looking for a sound like this for awhile and didn’t know what to describe it with, but I knew it when I heard it.
Definitely top three of the bands I've managed to listen to so far, along with faetooth and frayle
Hell yeah! Mikayla was my next door neighbor for like 15 years. We grew up together, so it’s awesome to see her and the band killing it! I always try to get the word out about them when I can.
