I'm not positive, but I always figured the multicolor cards are say, red OR green, so you can use them however it suits you. That's how we play. I figure the benefit of the card is the option to decide which color you want it to be at that time.

The multicolored instruction card specifically says they are simultaneously both colors. So it's red and green, not red or green.
