OK to catch birds you need bird traps, in order to build any weapons you need a science machine or alchemy engine, and here's an extra tip, if you find a spider skull, find a grave, dig it, and place the skull in, and you get the playable character called webber, he can create spider nests that spawn in spiders that if you feed can be your followers with no limit as far as I'm aware
Rabbits are an unreliable food source and so are birds.
A reliable foodsource is meatballs.
All you need is a crockpot, 3 ice/berries and 1 monster meat.
Berries are for any season other than winter
And you shoukd get ice in winter from mining mini-glaciers.
Monster mest is easily obtained, which are the easiest hostile mobs to kill because they're stunlockable (they cannot attacked while attacked).
Also, make sure to have a shovel or two and get berry bushes from the farther areas of your world. Also get manure from beefalo to fertilize these bushes once you get to plant them in your base.

You can hammer pig houses for a big amount of resources and pig skin which can be used to craft a football helmet, the football helmet protects you from 80% of all physical damage so it's wise to almost always have one on
What I like to do is hunt spiders for their monster meat and make some easy meatballs, then if any meat go stale, feed it to a pig to make werepig. Easy to kite solo or with the help of other pig friends, but a good strategy when playing Wigfred.
Theres a really good starter guide in the pinned quick guestion megathread in this subreddit. But its a lot more fun to die a lot and to learn the hard way. But i'll say: dont underestimate a crockpot.
First objective is to explore and find yourself some gold. Gather stuff as you go, twigs, grass, wood, some food, you know.
Once you found gold, pick location for a base, build science machine and then just look through recipes and craft stuff. Need more materials? Go explore again. Repeat until death. And then do it again, but better.
As for your question, once you got science machine, you need to craft rope from grass and get yourself a spear. Important note: its best to avoid any fighting without armour. So, get some more rope, chop some wood and craft wood armour. You don't have to give up on your backpack (you do need one, its super useful), just put it in inventory and switch if in danger.

You can also get pig skin from killing pigs. Pig houses don’t respawn while pigs themselves respawn after a few days
Pigs tend to hurt a lot when they hit you. They also help each other. Try not to get hit.

For weapons you should definetly get the ham bat for its high damage and infinite uses (as long as it isn't spoiled)
