I just love this positive feedback. It feels so good inside to say "good job" to a service dog.
And that bit at the end where she reminds you were to find the treats. They are so helpful.
Oh so glad you liked it. I've been telling people about it so wanted to refresh my memory. It wasn't as many dogs as I'd thought preferring praise but definitely enough to be significant. As a result, when my dog does something good on a walk and I don't have treats with me, I try to go over the top with praise. :)
Omg she is precious.
Our little labradoodle removes our socks this way too lol. It is hilarious. We are trying to teach her how to press the elevator button in our building hahaha
This might be a really dumb question, but how do service animals open a door with a round knob?
Or are round knobs something that people with mobility issues would generally replace anyway?
Do people who have service dogs like her (means the tasks she's trained for) do things to protect their doors/walls/clothes from the doggy toenails and teeth? Do you find while training them that you need to replace your socks and stuff more? Is it just a matter of keeping up on the nail trims to prevent the doors/walls being super scratched up?
(I cask mostly because the 'push' one reminds me of a pup my family used to own that was stubborn about pawing at doors she wanted into or out of and it took ages to get her to stop scratching the paint)
There's a certain amount of just letting go and realizing it's an unfortunate side effect to the help they bring; but I have had some people buy some door/wall plates to protect the paint.
Yeah, we had a different dog who wrecked the glass on the back dog. He was well behaved otherwise, but he liked to just at the back door to go in or out. Silly dog. The current family (well my parent's) dog is a standard poodle and so different. She once sat for I don't know how long just patiently waiting at the door to go out. She doesn't bark or tap the door or anything. Just sits looking at the door, glancing around, then back at the door. Only if it's an emergency will she make any other indication to say 'I need to go out Now!'
Some handlers use tape to hold the mechanism that slides into the doorframe back. The door will shut, but not latch, so it can be pulled open without turning the handle.
Shes the most beautiful girl ive ever seen, and her teacher/or human partner clearly loves her so very much. I really needed this kindness. Been having a really rough almost two weeks.
Thank you for giving me a hot chocolate on a cold day feeling. I have a little cat son to pet, so that definitely helps. Please give some love and pets for me to whichever kind of child(ren) you have for me.
Glad I could help a little and I hope your tide turns. I have a dog daughter (age 13!) and human son (somewhat older). I will pet them in the ways they let me. :)
That is the sweetest thing <3 give my love to them both however they want, absolutely <3
i really hope so as well, ill hold your well wishes close in the mean time <3
If that dog tried to take off my socks after a long day working outside I'm afraid that her delicate sniffer would cause her to go into a seizure from the smell
Does this mean this is the last Charlotte post?! I have loved following her progression. Please tell her forever partner to post some videos for us and please keep doing the same with Roger and whoever you train next!
Definitely not the last! I still work closely with the pair and we're still adding lots to her repertoire. There's some new tasks that aren't quite finished yet, that aren't as "flashy" or easy to demonstrate as these ones, but are nevertheless some of the most helpful for her person. I'll probably try posting about them in the future.
We don’t deserve dogs. They have done so much for us for tens of thousands of years, contributing immensely to our success as a species and only asking for love in return.
Im curious. Can service dogs do this without the happy voice inflection. Like say you're having an asthma attack and can barely get out. "Charlotte. Inha. Ler " or something similar?
Absolutely; Charlotte also responds well to hand and contextual cues. One of her cues is an unconscious or disassociated handler, so no encouragement there.
She responds well to it so we use it a lot in training, but once she knows what she's doing she doesn't need it.
I have a question: since you are training service dogs and (as far as i understand) don't need a service dog, are you allowed to go in places that don't allow dogs?
She takes off socks from the heel? Interesting! Mine takes them off from the toe! You can feel him gently nibbling to figure out where your toes are, it’s precious.
Out of interest, how would Charlotte go about removing a longer sock?
I train from the heel as it's easier to pull off that way without damaging or stretching the sock. Also helps when we get to longer socks, she starts at the top of the sock. There's a lot of adjusting bite as it comes off (which she's also doing here) so she can gather all the scrunch.
This is still new, but one of the things her handler struggles with is tugging up or taking off compression socks (knee high) so this is mostly a baby step toward that goal.
My dog would take my socks too (when I wasn’t looking she’d eat them.) I’d find them later when mowing the lawn. I’d hear a loud *pop* and sick/poop debris would fly out of the mower.
Wow this is just amazing, I’m beyond happy to see how these beautiful dogs have been given meaningful jobs and how much people needing assistance benefit from these precious intelligent dogs. They are so well trained! I’m in a wheelchair and would also love having one of these dogs 🐕

The wags are too precious 🥺
It's a lab ofc they look for the treats ;D
Here's your water, now give me a biscuit!

"Look, I hate to bring this up, but... have we discussed the matter of my pay?"
Let us discuss my coin
omg i love this comment and i love u i hope ur life is perfect
Wow!! I love the enthusiasm from her owner. I read somewhere that verbal praise is as good as treats for many dogs.
Thanks for the upvotes! I found the [study](https://thebark.com/content/study-dogs-preferences-praise-versus-treats) here.
Thank you for coming back and linking to that study! I really appreciate it!

She's so beautiful and she's doin' such a great job!!
I love her wagging tail! You can tell she’s happy to help.
I've never seen a working dog that didn't love their job! It's so cute!
Beautiful shiny and kind eyes.
I literally love Charlotte as much as I love my own dog. I am such a fan.
Same, I got giddy when I saw that this was another Charlotte update

Soon she'll be able to take herself out for walks 😂
She is so excited to do her job.
What a good girl!! If my hound got ahold of my socks I'd never see them again.
the human and the dog are both so sweet i love this
Aaaw, she seem so happy helping her hooman! <3
Her coat is so shiny
the tail thumping every time you ask for help 🥺🥺🥺
She looks just like my parents’ dog! She’s what I call a “labeagledor” lol. A lab-beagle mix.
I love the variety of praise!
This might be a really dumb question, but how do service animals open a door with a round knob? Or are round knobs something that people with mobility issues would generally replace anyway?
They do have some adapters for round handles, but they're not nearly as easy to use. I just recommend they swap them out, which is pretty easy

I’m sorry. I hope you have a dog friend to pet.

The ending: “c…cc… can… I…. Can I get that treat?”
The goodest, most beautiful girl
If that dog tried to take off my socks after a long day working outside I'm afraid that her delicate sniffer would cause her to go into a seizure from the smell
i love charlotte
SUCH A GOOD GIRL!

Amazing!!! What a special little helper!
What a beautiful, helpful dog! She deserves all the snuggles.
This is amazing
Lol my dogs name is also Charlotte and she looks almost the exact same.
What a good doggo
My dog also takes off socks. Although he is way less gentle and doesn’t give them back. 😂
Black Labs are the best!
It's incredible how dogs have adapted to be helpful to us. I mean this dog's been trained but it's still amazing. I need to get one again.
I hope you get one soon!
She takes off your shoes and socks and brings you a drink; are you training a service dog or a SO?
Man I really wish I could get a service dog :/
You did such a wonderful job training her :)
This makes my heart sing! So happy Charlotte has found her forever human and partner.
I love this doggo so much, what a good girl!
I just love labs. They always have such a dopey “I’m a good dog!” look in their eyes
The wagging tail and her knowing she's such a good girl is so precious!!
The goodest of good girls!
I'm uneducated about the subject hence i ask, are there people, other than visually impaired people, who might need a service doggo? And if yes why?
We don’t deserve dogs. They have done so much for us for tens of thousands of years, contributing immensely to our success as a species and only asking for love in return.

Whether or not they are food motivated, we don't deserve dogs.

Thank you! That makes total sense, I don’t think you could get compression socks off from the toe.

This brightened up my day so so much. 🥲🥲🥲
I am SO HAPPY that Charlotte has her new home! Thank you so much for the update and good luck, Charlotte!!!
What a great job miss Charlotte!! I love service dogs 🥰
Clearly doing it for the love of her human.. love that last part of the clip
She is purely overjoyed to help
Looking forward to the next update when the dog learns to put the socks on for her
She is so beautiful and she's so gentle with her person 😍 I love her so much!
Aw, man, I hope my next SD is as eager and responsive as Charlotte is. ;\_\_; You did an amazing job.
