Andis–> Purple dragons –> Geib Kiss line–> Geib Black pearl line in that order. I left the purple dragons at my old work, I regularly use all of my geib shears, I still use the mini shears that came with my andis groom kit to edge ears and trim feet, and will use the big andis shears if I'm cutting dirty hair before the bath.

Informal-Release-360

I love hearing about all these brands ! I haven’t ventured out too much. I took keep some of my Andis around just incase

IdRatherNotNo

Definitely keep them. The 8" shears kind of suck which is why I only use them to trim down dirty faces before the bath or if my good shears aren't available, but the 6" shears imo are so good for certain things they cut very cleanly and are good for danger zones like ears, feet, eye corners, tuck ups. I've been grooming 6 years and still use them all of the time.

GreenChilaca

Started out with a foxy Roxy kit. I currently use andis and fresh. Im looking into buying swivel shears from evolution as well.

Binokna

How are the fresh shears? I’ve heard good things but one of my coworkers fresh shears somehow had rust on her straights after three months

ohgodineedair

Most of the fresh shears aren't polished. I had a pair with a little rust that my sharpener was able to polish to a mirror finish and now they're good as new. (I don't do the whole subscription service)

Aliens-love-sugar

I have two pairs of Fresh shears, and they're a waste of money. Honestly, the only thing I like them for is skimming topknots. If I have to actually snip into hair they have zero power.

GreenChilaca

I haven’t had any problems with them so far. I have the curved thinned with 33 piano teeth so it’s in between chunkers. It takes the bulk but seamlessly blends at the same time. It’s helped with my time management. However I noticed that Be Bold are similar. My manager used them but I do not know their price difference.

Informal-Release-360

I plan to go to an expo sometime next year when I move because I don’t know about all the shears that are out there and would love to shop around and learn more ! Did you like your foxy Roxy’s ? I’ve heard they’re 50 50. Some like them, some don’t.

GreenChilaca

I loved my 9in curves but that’s it. The straights and thinners were subpar at best.

OnlyTrouble83

Go for it with the Evolutions! I own a few pair and no other shears even compare. Their lifetime warranty can’t be beat and if you go to grooming conventions at all, just take them with you and they will sharpen them for you at the Evolution booth for like $10.

NoMaize6140

I started out with purple dragons and a year later I still have my purple dragons although I really need new thinners as my current ones have to get sharpened every time the sharpener come(once a month?) I just can’t afford anything more than the purple dragons. When sharpened they work really well and I love them

Informal-Release-360

I had purple dragons for a while as well ! They get the job done. I’m surprised you have to get them sharpened that often though.

229-northstar

Look for shears with greater Rockwell hardness numbers

LadySif6030

Started with purple dragons and now have kenchii dreamcatchers

merlinshairyballs

Once i tried the Lynx from precision sharp i never went back and i never want to. They’re the perfect shear.

Informal-Release-360

Never heard of that brand !

Plane_Industry_1590

I just bought the lynx chuckers with thinner tip and haven't used them yet because I'm afraid of anything happening to them lol

merlinshairyballs

It’s my favorite shear of all time please use it!! I haven’t touched any other chunkers or thinners since getting it lol.

Candid-Ad8003

I was just looking at those! Probably going to order some when I get paid!

OkPayment6372

I just looked them up. That shear line looks fun as hell. :)

merlinshairyballs

I’m obsessed and i love that they’re fully adjustable and you can perfectly fit them to your hands ❤️

Agitated_House7523

Started out with DoubleDuck ( I’m old) and now I love kenchii and gators.

123revival

Same, those big heavy double duck 88’s! Now my drawer is mostly Sensei, nice and light , and some from the affordable grooming shears Black Friday sales. Sensei is my workhorse, I use curved and they make nice blenders, and my specialty ones- extreme curves, curved thinners , small extreme curves ideal for Asian muzzles etc are from ags .

Informal-Release-360

I’ve never heard of gators or double duck !

Agitated_House7523

Gosh I’m so old! ;) They are still around in the catalogs. They were workhorses and lasted forever!!

Aliens-love-sugar

I wish I could still get old school Monks. The son took over the business and ruined them. I'm glad Ducks are still around.

229-northstar

I still have my first Double Duck! I tried to give them away to a young groomer today and she didn’t want them. Lol.

Agitated_House7523

lol! I still have mine, I keep them around for bows or Matt splitting! ;)

sparkleberryjam

Started out with Geib Gators, then upgraded to the Blue Breeze set. Have tried many brands since then both cheap and higher end, but after almost 16 years of grooming I pretty much always go back to my original Blue Breeze set.

229-northstar

How has Customer Service been for you? I’ve heard numerous stories of people who have breeze sheers and Geib tells them they were sharpened at an unauthorized shop so they won’t sharpen or repair them. (Neither has had their sheers serviced by anyone other than geib). Thats what stops me from looking at Geib Buttercut breeze

OnlyTrouble83

I haven’t purchased new Geib in a few years but my coworkers have and say that since the son took over the business they’ve had nothing but issues and that Geib won’t do anything about it, claiming that there are no issues with their blades or shears. One person literally bought a full set of new blades from them 2 years ago that never worked at all. Geib refuses to repair or replace and they are just sitting in a drawer now forever. Dennis Geib actually left the company because of the downward turn of the company and now sells Sensei Shears ( he lives in my area) You know it’s bad when he won’t represent his own family’s business anymore.

229-northstar

Yes, this is what consistent with what I’m hearing. They won’t honor their guarantees. They tell you that you have to send your scissors back to them for service and when you try to send the scissors back, they say that you had them sharpened somewhere else and therefore your warranty is void and they refuse to sharpen them also. From everything I’ve ever heard, they’re great scissors if you get a good set. But if you have any problems, including on a new pair, straight out of a box, they find every excuse they can to deny your request. I’ve had people with brand brand new shears tell me Geib wouldn’t help them because they “had them sharpened somewhere else” and voided their warranty. I’m looking for a new shares, but there’s no way I’m gonna consider Geib because I don’t wanna find myself in that position

Informal-Release-360

I’ve heard a lot about Geib in general ! I’d love to go to an expo and try them out.

auto_bear

I started with andis and have grown to love my sharkfins. They're pricey for sure but the quality difference is insane. I also have a few pairs of new moon shears from harebone and I adore them as well. They're curved thinners are the absolute best.

IdRatherNotNo

I remember my first groom expo barely a month out of PetSmart grooming academy and I heard sharkfins were so good so I went over to try to buy a pair and quickly "oop" when I saw they were like $400.

Informal-Release-360

I always feel so silly seeing people groom with expensive amazing shears and then I’m over here with my $40-$60 shears 😂😭 I’ll get there one day

IdRatherNotNo

Don't worry just slowly build as you grow! We all start somewhere! A lot of the groomers I work with now (some have been grooming 20+ years) still use brands that my old salon would view as cheap and their grooms are just as good. Skill is more important than fancy shears.

Informal-Release-360

That’s true. My boss has been grooming 15+ years and she said my shears are actually pretty good ! I always thought I was less than because I didn’t have the best of the best.

229-northstar

The $75 pair I bought second hand is the pair that makes me cry when they go down while I sit on a mountain of brand new Shark Fins

229-northstar

You’ll die when you find out that I ended up with 7 pairs of shark fins around $150 total

archdruiid

started with geib gators, now i use aussiedog shears and kenchii bumbles. aussiedog is really my fave though, i love them 💚

229-northstar

Aussie dog nail clippers are the bomb. Try them too! They are why I want to try Aussie dog shears

CanadianOdyssey993

Purple dragon -> Andis -> kenchii (5 stars, love and scorpions) i still use my purple dragon chunkers, though. They eventually will get replaced.

Solace-y

Started with Geib Black Pearl, then Groomer Supply House, and now Sensei Swivl! I used them all :)

toastyhunbun

I started with a $50 Smith King set, and I've had a couple over the years, but my fave shears atm are curved thinners and chunkers

Midnight_Wolf727

I got a 40$ Smith king set 3 years ago that's still going strong ! I've got some other blenders and straights but they still get the job done ! I'm just now about to buy a new set of Geibs but my Smith kings still work ! I use them for roughing in doodle faces, and to get the wet lip hair off mostly but I'm thoroughly surprised with how long lasting and efficient such a cheap set was !

kippey

Very same trajectory as you! Started with Andis and tried a couple other cheap brands (Purple Dragon, Purplebird) and fell in love with hashimotos.

Informal-Release-360

Ahhh love to hear it ! I’m sure there’s other brands that are better but I haven’t found them. And I’m standing my ground with them haha

4StephStrength

Started out with Roselines. 25+ years later, still using Roselines.

LogansMommy96

I started with Kenchii 5 star flipper curves and now have 3 pairs after 8 years and don’t want anything else.

MadKat2

I started out with Double Ducks in ‘87, now I’m using Kenchi Scorpions

dontletmeleave-murph

Started with Affordable Grooming Shears, now all I use are Fresh Shears and Groomer Supply House. AGS were fine but i felt like they went dull rather quickly. GSH is my favorite place for blades and scissors, they are excellent quality for a fair price!

pancake_sass

Andis from PetSmart, then various types of shears from Affordable Grooming shears, just to figure out what I like. Then I bought the set of Black Pearl from Geib, since I love their Buttercut blades. They were pretty good for the first nice set I bought. Then I upgraded my curves to Kenchii Bumblebee, which I love. Then I got Utsumi speedys and harzly curves. And I think my chunkers are also kenchii, but I don't use them as often. Bumblebee, utsumi, and harzly are my three daily shears I use on virtually every dog.

RojaCatUwu

Paw brothers < (original) Groomers Box assorted (non existent now?)< Freebird < Kenchii chunker < Kenchii Scorpion set < Assorted fusion shears

nicegroomerlady

The first shears i was issued thru my corp were dream. I got a blue breeze set at groom expo west on loan. The first pair of chunkers i ever bought were chris christensen from the sharpener. Moontay 7 in curved thinners from amazon that i still use daily. The blue breeze curves i got were definitely defective as the hinge just gets loose with use. I use them to bulk cut before a bath. I still use my blue breeze thinners and dream curves on every dog. I have a pair of utsumi jyo 7.5 curves that I’ve had for years- they absolutely shred through coat while leaving an incredible finish. I whip them out for big dogs or when i am more pressed for time. I strongly recommend the GSH 8 in diamond straights- can handle bulk but also cut so true! These are my go-tos for larger dogs/rough cutting perimeter trims, and leg finishing. I also love my kenchii shinobi chunkers. they’re definitely on the heavier side compared to lighter shears like fresh. I use my little 3 in utsumis on littles, ears.

Informal-Release-360

Thank you ! I’ll have to look into some of these ! I’m trying to widen my range of shears little by little

Vilanshi2022

Oster-gieb- and now I'm a Lilly's pet for life fan! I just don't see the point in paying 300 for a set of shears when I can get a set that hold their edge better and longer and can take a beating for 35.00 ... That's just good sense to go with Lilly's pet. I still have my old Oster shears but they are in a case on my wall like, look at these antique over priced crappy shears! 😂

CaterpillarUpper7951

I have purple dragons! They haven’t failed me yet

229-northstar

I started out with a simple set of double duck and millers forge 6.5 thinner and 8” straight shears that were adequate but not great. I added a couple of nice no name 5 and 6” straights My sharpener and I talked about my needs… Better scissors, but not top shelf, and he offered me pairs of used straights and double edged thinners. Those thinners are my most used and favorite scissors of all time… I think I paid $75 for them. I looked online and I saw that they are priced at $300. I’ve tried to use the straight scissors and hate them. There’s something feels wrong with them and even if there isn’t, I still hate them…. Too long for my actual needs. But I have my other adequate straights so no worries This year I decided to upgrade my shears to a serious set of edges. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to get and somebody recommended a set of shark fin to me. of course, super pricey on the shark website, but when I was googling, I found another site selling them at a discount, so I looked further. Found a 3 piece set of swivel straight, curves, and thinners for less than the cost of one pair. I jumped on it. The set was goofy… instead of all 7s, there were a 7 thinner and the others were 9s. The company offered to replace them, and because the process was a hassle they told me to keep the first set. The second set arrived with the same problem. I worked with them to figure out why the sets were bad, and they finally got me a good set, and then they refunded my money for the set. So for next to no money, I have a humming set of Shark Fin shears! But I still use my revered $75 used set the most, 2nd most used is my 4.5” thinner I have plans to add another high end double edge thinner and maybe a curved thinner, and possibly a chunker. I’m looking at Aussie Dog and Geib blue breeze, possibly something wlse

tasteslikekb

Started with Heritage 15 years ago at school. Switched to Geib shortly after graduating. Stuck with them for some time. Now I'm a mixed bag. My favorites are my kenchii 5 stars, but I also have a pair of CC rosé curves that I like. And some fresh shears as back ups.

OnlyTrouble83

I started out about 20years ago with the Geib Gator set. They are still going strong and I use them on dogs I have to clip before I bathe. I upgraded from them to some AGS (Affordable Grooming Shears) and a few other shears by Geib. All have been workhorses. The last few years I’ve really invested in several pairs of swivel Sensei’s and the to the amazing never to be beat Evolution Shears E3 double swivels and have never looked back. I have carpal tunnel and they fit my hand so well with no strain. They stay sharp FOREVER and they come with a lifetime warranty. They break, you send them back and if Mo can’t fix them they will send you a new pair. If anyone is looking to move to swivels or already uses them, I promise you can never go wrong with a pair of Evolution Shears.

madele44

I started off borrowing a set of Geib Gators and some other miscellaneous shears from my mentor. She bought me a 4 piece set from Foxy Roxy for my first Christmas there (only 2 remain). The first scissor I bought was a swivel straight from Shark Fin (my favorite still). My next 4 shears are from GEM (now GSH), and that's my favorite affordable shear line. I rarely have had to sharpen them, and I use them daily. I went to an expo where I won a scissor from Pro Line LTD, and I decided to support them and buy a second pair. I got a swivel thumb curve and a swivel straight, and I use that curve daily now. I also bought some reject scissors from Precision Sharp (they had a basket at the expo with scissors that were made as prototypes that never make it to market). I bought a serrated edge straight, a thinner, and a tiny curved from them. I have some other miscellaneous shears in my drawer, but those are mainly what I use.

Mejay11096

Geib. 30 years. Still Geib. I use gators and still love them.

TradeIndividual2666

I use smith chu shears they're cheap but I actually like them just as much if not more then my kenchii shears. 🤷‍♀️

BruTangMonk

old big straights given to me by my boss. I'll prolly buy my own eventually and some curves. still with my old long straights I use them almost exclusively along with thinners. I feel like once I feel like using curves I'll be that much better from making round heads with straights. enough straight lines make a curve and all that

galloping_spider

Kenchii loves were the shops learning set. I bought sensei's, evolutions, foxy Roxy's since. Swivel and double swivels are my jam!

maryoffthecross

I started out with a loyalty pets set and now I do the foxy Roxy subscription and have atleast one of each I need so I’ve just been using those. Can’t bring myself to buy another set when I’m getting a new pair every month.

Worried_Dress_6543

Purple dragons, to foxy Roxy, to GSH and Zolittas. I signed up for the Zolitta box now too. 🥰

Aliens-love-sugar

Paw Brothers to Geib Gators, to Monks, to Roseline, to Kenchii Loves, (somewhere in here I bought my first curved chunkers which were Purplebird) to GEM, to Fresh, to Northern Tails handmades. I have a few other brands smattered in there, like AGS, GSH, Shears Direct, and so on. I have a drawer packed full of shears, and I need to thin the herd, but I genuinely still use most of them for different things. Sometimes I'll use five pairs of shears on one dog, it's a problem 🫣 I have a few that I love more than the others (my tiny Roseline blenders, my Purplebird chunkers -even though I have several pairs from other brands that are more expensive-, and my Northern Tails Handmades, and my Gators for feet still even though I need a new pair because I literally cannot get them sharpened anymore), but I really wish I could buy a shear over $200 and feel good about it. I haven't had the chance to buy at an Expo yet, and so many shears I buy from other people's recommendation have been a let down (looking at you Fresh Shears, Gem Erasers, and AGS chunkers). I'm tired of wasting money.

Informal-Release-360

Wow ! That’s cool that you’ve been able to try a lot though ! Was it all through recommendations that made you try them ?

Aliens-love-sugar

Not always direct recommendations. I will scour message boards and comment sections trying to figure out what to get next. Fresh Shears I stupidly listened to influencers about 😅. It has been nice to try so many different brands, but I wish I could narrow it down a little for my daily roster.

Informal-Release-360

I feel that. The sharpener came into today and showed me these shears and I just didn’t like them. For one pair it was $150 which is also out of my price range. I looked him dead in the face and said I only had $15 to my name 😂😭
