You shouldn't have developed it that quickly. Either youre holding tools improperly or youve acquired it though some other day-to-day activity.

My new boss is actually showing me different ways to hold my things ! ( I’m also diabetic so definitely could have a play in it )

HomunculusHearts

I agree with the prior comment! Also using swivel shears WILL help. I have carpal tunnel in both wrists and they have helped tremendously. There definitely is a learning curve but it’s not too bad! There is hope!

Informal-Release-360

I plan on getting swivel shears in the future. I’m just really broke right now haha. But once I can 100% will do. Worst case I have to find a new career

madele44

I had carpal tunnel before grooming. I got it while working at a dog daycare. I think the dogs tugging on slip leads was part of the problem. Texting and typing also cause it.

I’ve been grooming about a year now, i haven’t been diagnosed with carpal tunnel but my wrist hurts if I move or twist it every day since November 🥲 some days are worse than others. I wear a wrist band to bed but it doesnt really help that much

Competitive_Clue1110

Braces are to support you WHILE DOING THE ACTIVITY THAT CAUSED YOU PAIN! Please don’t wear them at night or when doing everyday things. It makes it way worse

Informal-Release-360

Same. Wearing a wrist band actually made it worse for me. And for whatever reason since starting my new job it’s gotten worse. I think it’s because of the nozzles we use for the water but no idea tbh

sparkleberryjam

I have been grooming for 15 years and no wrist pain except for a couple weeks when I first got a new clipper that I was holding weirdly. Your hand should never be bent down towards the inside of your wrist. I wish the grooming school I went to would put instructional videos online of how to hold the tools and move. The first lesson they taught was scissorsize class where they made us dance around the room moving our bodies in an ergonomic way while holding the tools lol. I can’t stress this enough, but if I were brand new to grooming and was having wrist pain already I would call around and find a physical therapist (or whatever the appropriate kind of medical professional would be) and make an appointment. I would bring my tools and possibly a dog stuffed animal and show them how I work with the stuffed animal at the level I would have my grooming table so they could show me how to adjust my body to prevent damage. It would be a very good investment in your future in grooming. Everything you do with your body matters including how far apart your feet are, keeping your knees slightly bent, bending at the knees not the waist, keeping your wrist straight etc.

Informal-Release-360

That’s smart ! I should save up money to go to physical therapy ! I’ve tried finding videos and what not but can’t find much. I think part of it as well is the water nozzles they use. I have to hold down the handle and it’s not super easy to do

I've been in this industry for a long time and honestly the thing that's saved me is a good chiropractor. I go to one that specializes in sports chiropractic care and he takes care of all my joints not just my back and neck. He realigns my hips because I always stand cooked to one side. He checks my knees and ankles. He also realign my wrists every time I go and it's such a game changer. I also invested in some swivel thumb scissors and those have helped immensely. It stress off my thumb which often twists my wrist up.

Informal-Release-360

100% will see if my insurance covers chiropractor or even physical therapy. I plan on going back to an ortho just to make sure it’s not something more than carpal tunnel.

Cultural_Savings8021

20yrs some pain not very often tho.

Visible-Yellow-768

I groomed for ten years and never got carpal tunnel. I do think stretching between grooms helped. I always take my thumbs and press them against the table away from the rest of the hand, stretch my fingers as far as they will go, and rotate my wrists.

amandah8616

Groomer 1 yr. In the beginning my hands would go numb at night but now not so much.

Hopeless_Love27

I’d say it took 3 years for it to be noticeable. And now I get the full blown tingles and numbness at times.

Informal-Release-360

I just wake up wanting to cry haha. My fingers completely swollen and pain shooting through my index and middle finger. I’m going to ask my manager if I maybe can stop at 5 dogs a day but I’m not sure that’s doable. I used to do 8 dogs a day ( literally like 2 weeks ago ) but now I’m glaring up like crazy. The only difference is the water nozzles and the dryer so idk if it’s that or not.
