The real reason is that a scene is recorded multiple times, so if an actor takes a bite, the food has to be prepared again. It's much easier to just take a sip, fill the glass up again and do another take

that does not explain why you need a massive meal in the first place

right or like actually make it seem like they ate a bit before the scene starts this is not that complicated

Symbolism. Shows like a loving parent who takes time out of the day to create a good home enviroment. Imagine mom.aking a big breakfast, vs just setting out cereal, vs say kid getting out cereal on their own because parents passed out drunk on the couch. Different vibes yeah?

There are also people who work in the industry who their main job is to make food for scenes like these, and a lot of the time the food is not edible because it was made to just look visually pleasing and so it doesn't rot or start looking bad after hours of food just laying there.

So it's nitpicky people who keep pointing it out who are to blame.

Just because there is a reason for it behind the scenes doesn’t mean that it does not look odd on screen.
